I used to come here every year on my visits to my mother-in-law, sweet people, cute cat, lots of coffee options... its been 2 years since I've visited, and from what I've gleaned in my latest visit, the shop has changed hands. It's been downsized, bland interactions with the staff, no helpful recommendations, the cat is no longer there, and the lady had no idea what I was talking about when I asked about it. Despite being the only customers in the store throughout the entire interaction we felt awkward, unwanted, and burdensome. This place earned two stars because the drink is drinkable, not memorable, not that tasty either... I really regret that I can't recommend this place to anyone traveling to the big island anymore. read more

Nice hole in the wall locals coffee shop off the side of the road towards a short back road. The business looks like a house with a big porch. Besides the typical coffees and their Hawaiian brews they sell what appears to be home made cookies, which are very tasty. The best place about this place is the quiet nature of this place. We stopped in for a cup of coffee and to chill on their front patio/lanai area. We got to taste before choosing and also bought a bag of their 100% beans. Having a bathroom there was also super convenient. The lady at the counter was very nice and friendly. No other customers were there at the time so we talked story a little bit before we left. It was pouring rain when we arrived - the front lot was a small lake but we parked about 200 feet in another area. read more

They dont seece real hawaiin coffee...its mixed with LION brand and 10% of random local .....So if you want to listen to Bobby Brown BLASTING at 10 AM and deal with the RUDEST staff, then visit Hilo Coffee Mill....they clearly are not caring about the impression they make on customers since they are hiring the lowest caliber staff available. Just skip this dump. Staff swearing so loud that my clients do not want to come meet me here. This place was super sketchy. No one has been here recently (at least reviewed on Yelp). The coffee was average and the older ladies behind the bar couldn't be more unfriendly. There were cats lying around and a very dirty patio where I wasn't interested in enjoying my coffee. Totally skip this place unless you're interested in supporting an obviously local time. read more

Very unprofessional place.. Upon entering there's a woman roasting coffee and yelling on the phone using vulgar language. The elder lady working on the bar tried to tell her to go outside and there was customers present. She stepped outside and we could still hear her yelling! She proceeded to enter the room again... still yelling. We felt very bad for the the lady at the bar as she apologized to us. Left a $20 tip for just two drinks. The coffee was inexplicably terrible. We paid more for the Ka'u dark coffee done in a pour over style and it tasted like hot water with a very slight coffee flavor. It was the weakest cup of coffee I've had in my life. I thought they would feature local coffee, but most of the offerings were flavored coffees like pecan pie and pineapple flavor, which just sounded gross. read more

Approach with caution, and if you choose to book one of their fairly expensive tours online, be SURE of your dates before you proceed. I booked a tour and almost instantly realized I'd inadvertently picked a date when I had a conflict. I immediately called -- within 15 minutes of clicking the confirmation button -- to see about rescheduling for a different day. I spoke to a pleasant young woman who said her boss would need to handle it, and she'd have him call me. Nothing. So I called again the next day, got voicemail and left a message. Again, no response. The next day -- Friday, with the tour I couldn't make booked for the following Tuesday -- I sent an email through their website, hoping that would elicit a response. I restated what I'd said on the phone, offering a couple possible alternate dates but adding I could be flexible and find a mutually workable time in January if needed. Crickets. So that Monday I finally contacted my bank to dispute the credit card charge, which of course had been processed immediately. I am still awaiting final resolution, but I assume the dispute will succeed. What a waste. If I'd liked their products they could have had a steady customer after the tour -- I'm very fond of really good coffee -- but now they'll never get a dime from me. read more

I was visiting the Big Island from Oahu and staying in Kona. Though it was a far drive... visiting the Hilo Coffee Mill has been one of my to do's for quite some time. Walking up the path way and ramp there was a large amount of chicken feces up the ramp and on the porch. As I enter the coffee shop I acquire a scent of cat urine. I am highly allergic to cats. I continue to look at coffee on the shelves and notice in the back of the counter there's a kennel for the cat, there's cat hair all over the counters. I proceed to tell the worker (who was very nice and informative) that I am allergic to cats. As I'm looking around The cat is continuously screeching and the worker tells me she's crying for treats and that she's very old. I do my best to avoid the cat and the hair lying around, however, my eyes start getting watery and I start to get super stuffy. Unfortunately my allergies were to severe I had to leave. If you are allergic to cats I do not recommend coming here. The shop has shelves and counters covered in cat hair and it wreaks of cat urine. 2 stars considering how nice the worker was. read more

My friends and I took a trip to Hawaii and visited the Hilo Coffee Mill. Jeanette and her team were wonderful!! Everyone was very friendly and kind! We even had the pleasure of meeting their assistant tour guide, Lei Lei the cat. If you are a coffee connoisseur and a nature lover, you definitely need to visit! During our tour, we tried some delicious coffee samples and visited the roasting room. (The roasting room smells amazing!) In the roasting room, we reviewed the process Jeanette and her team follow from growing the coffee plant to selling the finished product. Everything they do is natural and without added chemicals or pesticides. The experience was very educational and it is obvious Jeanette knows coffee! After seeing the roasting room, Jeanette took us on a tour of the property. We got to see coffee plants, ti plants, and many other plants grown in their garden and around the property. We even got to see one of their drying houses where they let the coffee beans dry before roasting! Overall, my friends and I had a wonderful time at the Hilo Coffee Mill! After our tour, we tried their house made coffee syrup. The syrup is delicious! We all purchased coffee and used the syrup as our sweetener. Our tour of the Hilo Coffee Mill started our trip off on a very high note! Jeanette and her team truly embody the Aloha spirit. I definitely recommend a visit here! (Some key tips on your trip, please remember COVID was hard on local businesses. Hilo Coffee Mill is a local, "senior-run" coffee mill. Hawaii is also the only producer of US coffee. If a price seems expensive, remember the people who put the work into making your coffee are not from a corporation or franchise. They are a local team doing everything they can to support their business and provide you a quality product. Everything they do is done with care and focus on quality. They advertise that they're open until 4. Got there at 2:30. Walked up and the lady said they were closed. I said they advertise that they're open until 4 and she said for us to come back tomorrow. I told her we fly out tomorrow and we couldnt. She only apologized. Apparently, this business is doing so well that they don't need customers and close an hour and a half early. Maybe they found a new business model of closing early and turning away customers well before closing. read more

The reason we stumbled upon this coffee farm/shop was because we really liked the coffee over at The Rim restaurant near Volcano National Park and the waitress informed us that the coffee came from here. We walked in after our morning hike and ended up buying over $100 of coffee and shipping it back to the mainland. Rachel also served us her favorite drink which was flavored coffee with a shot of espresso and half and half, which was delightful. She was helpful in explaining all the different coffees and making us feel at home. I will direct any foot/car traffic here for their coffee especially after a long morning in the park. read more

Hilo coffee mill is located on the road leading up to volcanoes national park. It is a bit of a drive, but we'll worth it. The coffee roasting facility is small, and very quaint. They roast all types of coffee from around the world as well as there own locally grown coffee. You can sample the different types of coffee and they have all for sale. They have families of roosters living on the farm, and if you are lucky you will spot new borns. There grounds are also beautiful , with beautiful flowers everywhere. Be prepared though, hilo gets slot of rain , so just plan ahead. The coffee was delicious. If you have time, a must do. read more

Hilo Coffee Mill provided us a glimpse into a small-batch coffee operation. It hits many of the high points of a great tour, even without some of the bells of whistles of a larger, more tourist-geared experience. We came to Hilo Coffee Mill via Nui Pohaku Adventure Tours, who managed our Big Island excursion from our cruise ship. Upon arriving, we found a few small buildings. We were ushered into what we soon found out was the roasting room. And Jeanette, one of the owners, greeted us. And even better yet, she gave a great talk about the science behind coffee -- much to the delight of my chemist husband. She went into great detail about vacuum sealing, the roasting process and decaffeination, without making it boring. Jeanette was very, very patient with the numerous questions our tour group as well as the group that joined us, asked. In some cases, people were not listening and asking the same questions over and over -- she didn't bat an eye at this. We also got to sample a few brews, and Jeanette instructed us the flavors to taste for. Another fun fact: Hilo Coffee Mill doesn't grow the coffee it roasts; they don't have enough land for that. While they grow some, most of the coffee comes from other Hawaiian farms. So you are able to taste and learn about beans from other areas. After our mini tour of the roastery, we ventured over to the store and ended up buying several bags of coffee to bring home with us as gifts. It was nice to see a working, authentic coffee mill during our time in Hawaii and to bring some new knowledge home with us, as well as souvenirs. read more

She will teach you all about growing and processing coffee. On Saturdays there's a delightful Farmers Market with various food and produce vendors along with artisans of various styles. PILAU and overrated overall. They were out of about everything they advertised on their menu and terrible service. Lady had the nerve to belittle my Dad after they were lacking most of their menu. He asked her, "What's in the fall delight?" Lady gets annoyed and starts shuffling through a drawer and turns and goes, " I don't know." She gets increasingly agitated when he is still deciding and asking what she still has. Yet she gave no recommendations or help. Another lady offered to help my Dad. The worker gets agitated and tells her- " The menus right there. I have what I have." Why be offended that another person stepped up to do your job? The audacity of this worker to believe these customers are somehow the problem. At that moment I refused to buy anything because why should anyone give patronage when the business doesn't even appreciate it. Glad my Dad is nice enough to give them a chance, but he wasted $6 on coffee that he dumped. read more

Jeanette is very helpful on taking me through the process of selecting a Kona coffee and roast for my preference of taste. My morning preparation is to grind the beans fresh before brewing. I even have a specialized sealed container by removing the majority of air to maintain the freshness of the beans. All of this online and via texted conversations. Helps to have family in the business to help out in selections. Never been to the Mill, but my sisters have and enjoyed the experience. During this COVID season, ZOOM has been the connect to our family reunion ... having it cancelled last month, we all reconnected. This place is adorable. Stopped here multiple times on our trip, the barista who is regularly working is adorable and is happy to give recommendations to good places. About halfway from the beaches at Hilo and the crater on Kilauea lies the Hilo Coffee Mill. I was fortunate that, for me, they were right down the street from where I was staying. The coffee is roasted (and in most cases grown) right on their property. It's organic, and more impressively, it's delicious. Most of the places I visited during my time on the Big Island, good or bad, were one time visits, but I stopped into the Hilo Coffee Mill 3 or 4 times for a cup. (And this is considering that my hosts also grew and roasted their own coffee and cocoa nibs and brewed them together!) Seriously, this coffee is damned good. I had a warm regular dark roast (twice), a regular iced coffee, and a pineapple iced coffee. All sooo sooo good. I even shipped a pound of Peaberry (grown on another island but roasted here - because he specifically asked for Peaberry) to a friend back home! I also had the pleasure of visiting their market, which happens on weekends and had a delightful breakfast of sweet bread french toast and Portuguese sausage while chickens stood idly by, waiting for scraps like polite puppies. I would have preferred the egg to have been more soaked through on my french toast, and it's Hawaii, so some Lilikoi syrup would have been great, but it was delicious all the same, and fun to eat outside in the market place. The real highlight here (well, okay it's the coffee, but after the coffee) is the staff. They are friendly and knowledgeable and happy to talk to you about what goes into making the coffee as well and random things about Hilo/Volcano. If you're staying in Hilo, it's on your way to Volcano National Park, so there's no reason not to stop! read more

This is an operating coffee processing mill and roster (and they offer tours!), but it's also a working coffee and tropical fruit farm, a restaurant and a gift shop. Felt like we just stepped into an eerie thriller movie... let me paint the picture for you. Imagine pulling up to a nearly empty parking lot and walking up to what appears to be an empty building. You're wondering, "Where the heck is everyone?" All the while the constant rain adds a sense of gloom to the whole situation. You ascend a few steps to the front porch of two identical buildings. You go for the right door and step into a room filled with bags of coffee beans, a roasting machine, and a gentleman hunched over the table. There's only so much to keep your mind pre-occupied but, fortunately, the gentleman finally decides to say a little hello. He doesn't say much after and you're forced to try to keep the conversation going by coming up with question after question- only to be reciprocated with short answers that don't lend themselves to much of a two-way conversation. However what keeps you going is the agonizing thought of the "awkward silence." You finally find a window of opportunity to exit the room and enter the left door. Inside are shelves lined with bags of coffee beans ready for purchase. Not much in terms of description nor story. You have to assume it's quality looking at the minimum price tag of $20+ for the smallest bag of locally grown coffee. A man behind a desk calls out and says, "Can I help you with anything?" A bit taken aback by the lack of cordiality, you say "No" to cut things short. Couldn't he have said hello, good morning, how are you, how is your day, can I help you with anything, here is a history of our farm.... etc etc etc. Common courtesy would've been nice to have, especially for a company selling a premium product. Looking around further, you see some bags of tea. Curious, you ask the lady at the counter about the tea leaves that are grown at the farm. "Sorry, I don't know anything about the tea," she says. Turning to another gentleman that had just walked in, she asks, "Do you know anything about the tea?" "No idea, I think we planted it a few years back," says this other guy. At this point you're absolutely bewildered that they're charging premium price on tea that nobody appears to have any clue where it even came from. Something seems off.... you can't quite pinpoint it but the experiences all add up to red flags in your mind. To get out in one piece, you decide to purchase a latte as a simple gesture of thanks then you book it to your car and take off! What a relief to be done with this strange experience altogether. read more

The thin, average-height woman working inside the indoor shop on the left (who I assume was the owner or manager) was very rude and yelled at me for "looking around too suspiciously" (like what does this even MEAN?) and told me to leave. The outside workers were friendly enough though who wants an experience like this while on vacation when there are so many other coffee farms one can tour on the Big Island that are friendly, welcoming, have better prices, let you sample numerous coffees for free and, frankly, have nicer and more aesthetic coffee farms--some even with free tours!!? read more

Me and my wife stopped here before going to black sands beach and the coffee was delicious! The owner Jeanette introduced herself and made us feel very welcome to Hawaii. There was a small farmers market that was neat to check out after we ordered our coffee. Very friendly barista, definitely coming back when I can for coffee! read more
