I can't figure out what's going on with coffee in Hawaii, which I always associated with good coffee. I had a lot of weak cups that were not nice, at all. So I went to Hilo Coffee Mill to just get it from the source. I ordered an americano, and it was terrible. It was really weak. It was just too much water to not enough espresso. I poured it out in the flowers. It was a bummer, because their Christmas decorations were great. But when you're repping your own product why wouldn't you nail it? read more

The Hilo Coffee Mill was one of my best experiences in Hawaii, I highly recommend the tour which runs daily at multiple times. During the tour I learned so much about coffee, learned about how it's grown and harvested and the history of the business. The staff is very friendly, and I felt that I had such a personal experience. The coffee is exceptional. The don't just grow coffee, they process beans from about 70 other growers on the island. I have such an appreciation for what goes into making a great tasting coffee. If you come to Hawaii and you are staying on the Big Island, you should definitely plan to come here! read more

It's a place at the roadside. If you're new here, you may miss it. My husband loves coffee, we find it on the navigation app and come by. The coffee here is very pure and tastes very good, even with the milk. The owner is very friendly, sharing nuts for us. Also you can have a simple cup of coffee. Recently had to move back to Oregon for health reasons. During my years living right up the road at Fern Acres, I stopped at the mill fairly regular. Having lunch and cold drinks out on the front lanai is how life should be during retirement. The employees know the true meaning of aloha. If I could go back and just sit there again, with my lady friend, it would be as simple and enjoyable as life can be. This place is easy to find, always very clean and you will leave happy. Worst customer service I have experienced in years!! I came the in to drop off a "freebie" from Freecycle..... the staff didn't thank me, grunt, or offer me a cup of coffee as a thank you. I called the owner after the drop off and told her what I experienced and all she wanted to do was prove me wrong!!!! So she checked her security video tapes..... THAT backfired!! Then she changed gears, and said her employees thought I was a delivery person. So you treat delivery people with less respect??? Spend your hard earned $$ elsewhere. I learned that Hilo Coffee Mill uses all biodegradable cups, lids, straws, ect. - which is actually really important to me in lessening the environmental impact! And although I knew they supported local farming, I didn't realize how closely this company works with their farmers. Additionally, they are apparently very involved with helping people through a variety of state programs, get back on their feet (also extremely important to me). So... with that new knowledge - I am more than happy to give an extra dollar for a cup of coffee, than I normally would! Great stop if you're heading to see the Volcanos from Hilo. They're right on Volcano road, and you won't regret stopping here. Their coffee is extremely fresh because it's roasted right next to their shop. The staff is friendly, and they offer free coffee tastings of their coffees of the day. Hilo Coffee Mill also has a little breakfast menu as well as a short lunch menu. Wireless is free, though you have to pay $5 an hour for electricity if you'd like to plug in your laptop. Hilo Cofffee Mill is surrounded by an immaculate garden that looks like a mini Japanese garden. There are free roaming chickens lingering, so watch where you walk! I recommend ordering a coffee of the day (supposedly the Pineapple flavored coffee is delicious, or try the Puna), grab a breakfast sandwich, and sit outside and enjoy your morning! read more

We also had 3 candy samples and macadamia butter. We did buy the candy it was delicious but we were incredibly disappointed in the fact that the coffee was not made fresh or their own. read more

Turns out it's the one closest to the parking. We go inside, and it's a coffee bar, quick-bite, gift shop all-in-one. We stopped into the coffee mill for some lunch on our ride back from Hilo to the Volcano Village. We first received a private tour of the roasting process from James and that was very insightful. We then went next door and tried the medium and bold brews with some pulled pork, rice, and pasta salad. Stopped for a cup of Joe and had the macadamia nut syrup in my latte. Bought a bag of the dark roast Hamakua Estate 100% Hawaiian Coffee.

Coffee is delicious. Also, the pork sliders are tender and the homemade barbeque sauce is delish. GET THE PURPLE POTATO SALAD! It's so good! They have chickens out in the front and they get fresh eggs from them. There is also a green house in the back that they get fresh lettuce and veggies from for salads. On your way out you might see the banana trees and you should grab a couple even if they are totally green. They will ripen and homegrown Hawaiian bananas are different and delicious. read more

Oh man ... the best coffee on the island. We went all over, visited kona coffee farms and beyond, and this place had the most amazing coffee, the most lovely owners, and so many baby chickens! I know that shouldn't be a selling point, but it was pretty fun. The pineapple coffee, Maui, and Oahu were wonderful! Also learned some fun facts - the lighter the bean, the more caffeine (with a fun little rhyme to remember it), and that french roasts are actually the worst coffees, inferior beans roasted into oblivion to hide imperfections. Who knew? Not me. Anyway, this was our favorite coffee farm on the island, and once we blow through our supply we'll be ordering more! read more

Hilo Coffee Mill us a great place to sample coffee, you get to taste up to 3 swigs and if you like you can buy a cup $3 small or a bag ranging from $18 (half) to $36 (full). They do grow and grind coffee beans here and if you want the tour it is $80 and you must book 24 hours in advance, open from 8-4.30 and closed in Sunday's. I did not opt for the tour.., Staff is friendly, Of the samples I tried medium roast, dark roast and toasted coconut the latter was aromatic and flavorful read more

What a totally cool place, we visited HCM on the way to the Volcano National Park and it was an awesome pit stop, we had a fabulous lunch of soup and sandwiches. A very cool place and the owner herself took us on a private tour of the roasting area and educated us on what Kona Coffee is all about. This is a most stop place. Hilo Coffee Mill is a good place to stop for coffee on the way to the volcano park if you are traveling from Hilo side of the island. The coffee is very good. The eats are not that great. They had some muffins that were suspiciously identical to the Costco muffins... not that Costco muffins are not that bad, but they aren't so good when they are a day old or so. The grounds outside the shop have some nice trees with orchids growing in them - and come coffee trees complete with coffee berries. Two busloads of school kids that came for a tour and then to small purchases. They swarmed into the shop followed by their teachers. "If you aren't going to buy something, get out!", shouted the male teacher. No one left. "Okay, show me your money and you can stay!", he said. Some of the kids left, other kids raised their hands with a 5 or a 10 dollar bill, while a remnant stayed as if they had not heard the rules. "Show me your money!" he said to one of the kids with no money. They had dejected looks. "Okay, get out." They turned and did the slow walk of shame to the door. It was very entertaining. I wondered about the rich kids and the poor kids. When I was in grammar school on bank day when we all got our bank deposit books. My mother always gave me a dime or a quarter to put in my bank account. I believe Bank Day was once a month. Not that many kids participated in "bank day". I remember asking my friend Alton why he didn't participate in Bank Day. "I don't have any money.", he said. I was never very quick at figuring things out. I never had any money either until my mother gave it to me on Bank Day. I thought, "What's the use of this money? I can't spend it. I just take it to school and it goes into a bag and all I get back is a bank book with another entry." I didn't even do the math to see if they added my 25 cents correctly. It was helpful for me to learn to save I suppose. Now I can afford to stop at Hilo Coffee Mill, drink their good coffee and eat all the day old Costco muffins I want. I'm sure there is a life lesson in all of this for the school kids. My wager is on the kids that didn't leave until the teacher forced them out because of their inability to proffer any bills. There's some kid out there who was totally pissed off and thought, "I'll show that son-of-a-bitch! I'm going to go out and make a ton of money when I grow up!" Years later the kid will write his biography. "The turning point in my life was when I had to leave the room because I couldn't show the teacher any bills." Voila! We received a recommendation from our hotel to visit Hilo Coffee Mill on our way to the national park. James gave us a great overview of the whole coffee harvest process during a tour of the mill. Cute stop on the way to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! We popped in for coffee -- it fully looks like you're pulling into someone's private driveway so don't be put off! They were super friendly -- I wanted to get *the best* of their coffee options so when I asked for some recommendations and I GOT them. It was so rad! The nice nam gave me a rundown of all the coffee they sell and came around with come samples of a snack mix, macadamia nut butter, and espresso syrup -- YUM. Plus, they do coffee tastings so I could zero in on the house blend that I wanted! Apparently you can also do farm tours with like 24 hours notice. We didn't have that in the plans but it's cool to know it's on offer! A fun experience. This was my first Hawaii coffee shop experience so I don't have local context, but it does seem a little much to pay $4.20 for just a drip coffee? I guess I'll find out through the rest of our stay here! read more

Pass this up- when we arrived the person behind the counter greeted us with rolling her eyes and the experience got even worse- when I inquired about different coffees to buy was given no help - no recommendation- decided if she didn't like any of the coffee that they offered probably not the place to buy-this was at about 2:00 in the afternoon with no one else in the place- ordered a small coffee to go and couldn't get out of there quick enough-go into Hilo and visit Hilo Shark - you will be happy you did! read more

**** 1/2 Ok, THIS PLACE Deserves attention! Some Yelpers were whining and complaining about Starbucks and going to Tin Shack in Pahoa for coffee that was amazing. WTF? You want Homegrown real Coffee?? Hilo Coffee Mill is only 10 minutes away!!! AND WAAAAY BETTER. Its a small and super laid back store, farm and roaster. I was so impressed with the staff there. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We went to the Roasting room and got a short tour of the Roasting Process. I got to exchange knowledge with the worker about coffees around the world and the Big Island. I loved the fact he was a coffee junkie. We talked about coffee as if it were wine. Loved it! Also found out why coffees like Folgers tastes like crap. They don't wait for the fruit to ripen. Next we went to the store and got to try some of their coffees. Most of their coffees are actually from Maui but they have their own reserves too. Their flavored coffees are amazing! The worker bragged that their flavored coffee doesn't lose the favor of their coffee bean. She was absolutely right. I bought a cup right after. They even helped us with info about hikes and places to eat. The sad part was that their own reserves are in tiny bags. I wish I could have bought a bigger bag but I think they are just starting with their trees. I think I will definitely go back when I visit the Big Island. read more

We were headed to Volcanoes National Park and decided to have breakfast at Hilo Coffee Mill on our way there. I had already decided on a waffle, so I was not too pleased when told that the waffle machine was broken. That left few choices. I ordered an egg & ham breakfast sandwich with no mayo. That led to much conversation between the person at the cash register and the person making the sandwiches about the location of the ham. Honestly, I was fully expecting to hear that there was no ham. I happened to be looking at some items on a shelf and saw the sandwich preparer slathering my bagel with mayo. I called out to her. She was not happy about having to toast another bagel. It took over 20 minutes of waiting to get a couple of bagel sandwiches. The pineapple coffee that so many Yelpers raved about? None in sight. The private tours of the coffee operation? None offered. The chickens and friendly cats? Yup, they were there. I really wanted to like this place. Instead, I spent most of my day hungry. read more

After hearing so much about Kona coffee, I wasn't sure what to expect from a place on the other side of the island, but we randomly stopped by after seeing a sign on the side of the road because... well, I wanted a cup of coffee. Their hospitality was amazing! Carol met us when we walked in and immediately offered samples of their medium and dark roasts (I liked medium). She told us all sorts interesting things about coffee and took us one door over to the roasting room, where they have samples of green, hulled and roasted beans. It was neat to see the operation at that level. We bought some of the estate roast, meaning it all came from coffee tree on the land behind the shop - that's pretty cool. We also bought 'coffee cherry tea' which is the dried fruit of the coffee cherries - it's good and is nothing like brewed coffee. Finally, I ordered a latte, and of course it was good. I appreciated their high level of knowledge and customer service. If I am back in the area I'll definitely stop by and maybe get some food. read more

This place is AWESOME! Not only is it a superior coffee shop, but their coffee is the best I have had in Hawaii. The location is somewhat odd, but it definitely worth stopping. This was a favorite spot to go while visiting my boyfriend on the Big Island. He also used to bring me coffee from there when visiting me in California. He no longer lives in Hawaii, so I am not able to get my coffee from there anymore. They should start shipping- the coffee is so good that I would definitely order it! Aside from coffee, they also sell smoothies, pastries, local treats and other miscellaneous things.
