I was excited to visit here based on the reviews. The tour was 1.5 hours which included speaking with the owner, viewing a single coffee tee, and speaking briefly with the roaster. While the coffee is definitely handled with care, the tour lacked structure and professionalism. Really felt all over the place. A majority of the tour was listening to the owner discuss her personal background (how she got here, how she came up with the name, etc), and very little about the coffee itself. During the tour, I felt singled out by the owner after I made a casual comment about wanting to live in Hawaii one day. Her responses were passive aggressive and judgmental ("how will you ever survive without your Amazon 2-day shipping?"). She continued to sling these types of comments at me in front of the group for the entire duration of the tour, which made it incredibly uncomfortable and unpleasant. The roaster is really nice and provided good insight on the coffee. That was the only good part of the tour. The coffee is good but I wouldn't not recommend the tour at all due to it being so unbalanced and unprofessional. read more

We went to Hula Daddy Kona Coffee as a little side trip as we traveled north. We were a bit confused on which driveway to use, but the clock tower the sure sign of where to turn in. A bit off the beaten path, it turned out to be a very peaceful place to rest a bit. As you can see from my pics, they have a great open view of their farm and beyond. The hostess was engaging and welcoming. They had a few different coffees to choose from and we enjoyed all of them. Following a brief visit and an informative short tour to another coffee place on the mountain, I was determined to find better Kona coffee and a better vibe at another coffee grower spot. You will hate every cup of coffee you've ever had before, after sampling the Hula Daddy Linda's Reserve coffee. The craziest thing is that they have even better coffee available... I can't imagine how coffee could be better than this! Linda's Reaerve is only a 96/100. There are 98s available. I was happy with this find and I grabbed some to take home. Linda's Reserve is an award winning coffee well deserving of any and every accolade available to coffee roasters. Folks, if you can't visit the place and spend some time talking with the proprietor- Karen, find them online and order some of this coffee. I kid you not, it will change your idea of what coffee should be like forever. It is not a cheap cup of coffee but it is worth every penny you spend on it. If I could go lower than "1" I would. In my 13 years as a loyal customer, where I've spent approximately $10,000 on coffee purchases, there have been very infrequent occasions (2) when an order was mixed up and, whenever I called, Karen responded promptly, professionally and (most importantly) she was NICE. I attempted to join the coffee club and placed my initial order, but, after 2 weeks, the coffee never arrived. I called but their phone doesn't allow for leaving messages. Then I get a survey asking me to rate one of the coffees I ordered. BEFORE I responded to the survey, I tried once again to call Hula Daddy (same result). I NEVER wrote anything negative about the coffee. I said "I can't rate the coffee because I haven't received the coffee ". Next thing I know Lee has written me an email telling me to find a new coffee supplier. The following is the last email from Lee: "18 years as a customer and you don't call or email us, instead you stab us in the back with a 2 star review. If you had called or emailed we would have told you it was delivered." No Lee, it's been 13 (not 18) years...my order was not delivered and I did call twice; thus, the reason for my review. However, your rudeness has been delivered...has been received...and I have taken your advice and found another coffee supplier. Here's some unsolicited advice...let Karen be the one to interface with the customer because she's much nicer...Aloha! read more

I love coffee, and while I'm largely ignorant of the process that brings it to my cup every day, I especially love Kona coffee. It was a dream come true to visit the region and learn from Karen and Laura about the prices of growing one of the highest rated coffee brands (not just Kona) in the world. We did the tour, which is worth every penny, and learned about Karen's very intentional approach to growing the perfect Kona cherry. She and her team automate nothing. It's all laboriously driven by hand. That is amazing. It was also helpful to learn how this applies to the coffee growers and the means they use to create coffee en masse. Really... intentional might be the wrong word. Obsessive is probably more accurate. After the tour, Laura, one of a handful of Coffee Q graders, allowed me to try the Red Bourbon variety and helped me better understand what flavors might better appeal to me in coffee. This is boutique coffee on a whole next level, so if you aren't interested in learning about the process or prepared to spend some serious money on beans, it's probably not for you. But my daughter, who isn't much of a true brewed coffee drinker, loved it and said it was really informative. read more

It was a bit overwhelming to figure out what coffee farms to visit on the island, but thanks to the Reddit community we settled on visiting / buying from Hula Daddy Kona Coffee! We stopped by early in the morning to try some of their coffee and check out the beans. We didn't do a tour (we're pretty well versed in coffee farming/roasting), but we were able to enjoy a gorgeous view of the farm and the ocean in the background. For tastings, we were able to try their Medium Roast Karen J Red Bourbon and their Dark Roast Karen J Red Bourbon Natural Process. It was our first time having a natural process coffee and despite being a dark roast... it was actually pretty fruit forward for a coffee. The medium roast was also good, not too harsh/burnt and well rounded for a coffee. You can enjoy the tastings on their front deck (they have rocking chairs) but we were allowed to enjoy them inside on the couch with the view. The fiance is a huge coffee fanatic and this was the only place we ended up buying beans from. Kona coffe is quite expensive, but we felt like this was worth it. My husband is a huge coffee fanatic. He already told me ahead of time that we were coming here during our trip. We actually tried to come here our first day on the Big Island. We arrived shortly they opened on a Tuesday. We were greeted promptly to try their samples. My husband and I ventured in and Laura started chatting with my husband. We enjoyed our impromptu tour here as the entire staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable but also realize this won't be for everyone. The main reason is the tour costs $15 per person and the coffee is expensive ($60+ per pound). All of this to say I understand it, and we even bought some coffee - BUT, you can get a free tour at most coffee farms and learn the same, if not more, information on the growing process. Looked up coffee plantations during our first trip to the Big Island, and Hula Daddy was among the top options. Being located close to the airport, we decided to make this our 2nd detour stop on the way to our hotel. The place is high up on the slope of Mauna Loa, so a fairly steep drive up. There is an interesting looking (and also poisonous) tree out front to help it stand out. It's pretty bare bones inside but they have a nice deck. The tour itself was informative. I'd never been on a coffee tour before, so it was maybe more valuable to me than others. At the end of the tour, everyone got chocolate covered coffee beans to try. Bought a bag of those to take home. Wanted to buy other coffee, however they were out of almost everything and seemingly weren't willing to sell some things; liked what they had in the store well enough but found that weird. Would probably expand my horizons to other coffee plantations first, however this was definitely fun. read more

We visited the Hula Daddy Coffee visitors center and farm yesterday. Very impressive, expansive views, lovely plantation visitors center and a warm welcome from everyone there. The tour was informative and very interesting. We met the owners and the award wining "Q Grader" ( coffee sommelier), they were more than happy to answer questions and offer information. Now on to the coffee, leaps and bounds above any other coffee we'd ever tasted, even on other tours. What we learned was that they are a premium, small batch grower and roaster. They grow all the beans on their property and hand process them. We purchased a couple different coffees, one being their recent award winner, the smoothest coffee we'd ever tasted. There were different coffees to sample and enjoy while rocking on the front porch. Anyway, if you like superior coffee from the Kona region then I highly recommend visiting Hula Daddy. Why? They have great coffee - it's the best Kona coffee I have tasted.  I tried about 10. Several coffee makers have consistently recommended their coffees. Unsolicited. Also, they have won numerous awards. What an amazing experience! We came here as a time gap between lunch and our luau one afternoon and we were pleasantly surprised with how awesome this coffee tour was! From the sampling of the the different types of coffee to bring walked through the history of their farm and the coffee stages on a farm if was fantastic! Found this spot on Yelp and I was not disappointed! One of the owners, Karen, gave us our tour so it felt super personalized to us. We got to try coffee before and after the tour which was really a treat! I usually don't drink black coffee, but I enjoyed the unique flavors of the Hula Daddy coffee. Awesome Awesome coffee plantation. They give you free coffee tastings, a free tour, and then free tea tastings at the end. The process that they use here is so cool and so unique. On top of everything their coffee is delicious. The most interesting thing that I tasted was their tea. They take the outer shell or husk that comes off the coffee bean and make it into a tea. You can take the leaves and put them into a french press. The tea ends up having a tea flavor and is quite delicious. The tea even had twice the amount of caffeine as the coffee. We opted to buy a bag of the red bourbon coffee and the dark tea. They also offer shipping services if you want to mail it home. We are really happy we stopped by. I liked hearing the story of how they moved to the Big Island and started their company. In addition, while you're there, you're on camera. They weren't kidding. We toured 3 coffee farms on our 2-week vacation in the early month of May 2017 and each one had something different to see and offer. Yes, we love our coffees! This is a small farm at 10 acres and also our favorite! The care and time put into their coffees is evident. The farm is easy to find and has a decent parking area. The building is adorable with a cute patio and white rocking chairs. Upon entering, there are a couple of coffees to taste test. They actually have cute small ceramic coffee cups with tiny handles as opposed to paper cups at the other farms. I have this weird aversion to drinking out of paper cups. The gift shop area is nicely put together and the sitting area overlooks their farm. Talexi was our tour guide. She was a whole host of information and if she didn't know the answer to your questions, she would make sure to get the answer for you. My Sweetie stumped her a couple of times but we were able to meet Laura who is their only roastmaster and she was able to answer my Sweetie's questions. Talexi pulled a couple red ripe coffee beans out of the coffee tree and peeled it to let us taste the skin and to show us how the coffee berry looked inside. We were also able to eat the coffee bean raw. I love the personalized experience of the tour. All their beans are handpicked with care. After each batch of roasting, Laura would taste the coffee from the batch to make sure it is up to par for the farm's standards. Wow! Talk about being meticulous! I love that! Laura explained and showed us the whole cupping process from start to finish. We didn't get this opportunity at the other farms. Most other farms tours are very generalized. I also was able to taste the coffee berry tea, which is made from the skin of the coffee. It is so good.. sweet yet tart. This would make good cold tea mixed with some black tea, which we have some organic black tea leaves at home that I'm excited to try out with the coffee berry tea. Almost to the end of the tour, we end up back at the house with Talexi brewing varying coffees for us to try. Surprisingly enough, we really enjoyed the lighter roasts. We ended up buying quite a few bags of coffee. It's easy to do with all that deliciousness! I also love the handmade cloth drawstring coffee bags made by the owner herself. They are so cute! I love the varying colors and designs. You get a free cloth drawstring bag of your choice with each bag of coffee you purchase. Thank you! The little touches are appreciated! We also ended up pre-ordering a light roast coffee that is not available until September. We fell in love with it during the taste test. My Sweetie ended up ordering a pound of the stuff. We were told we will be contacted once the batch is available and ready to be shipped. We really enjoyed ourselves and learned so much about coffees. As a coffee addict and a first timer to the islands, I was excited to try the infamous Kona coffee. My honey and I got there a lil early and we were immediately greeted by Moni (hope I spelled it right). Moni and Laura made us feel right at home while sippin on the delicious coffee. Very relaxing to drink good coffee while catching an amazing ocean view. Moni took us on a tour and she gave us a great overview of the Kona coffee growing process and the Hula Daddy way!
