Looking for a place to have coffee in Hilo? Checkout Big Island Coffee Roasters. They roast their coffee on sight and there's a window where you can watch the coffee being roasted. Service was friendly and quick. Great place to hang out and drink your coffee. Free and convenient parking.

Great coffee! Bonus for having gluten free banana bread (which was phenomenal)! Cute place, limited parking. Quick service!

Big Island Coffee Roasters was my favorite cafe on the Big Island! The staff were incredibly friendly and took the time to explain the different coffee beans they offer. We tried the Bright & Sweet Coffee Flight and the pandan latte, and everything was wonderful. The only thing I didn't like was the banana bread. The inside is cute & can get very busy. Parking was easy and convenient.

Ever since we got to the Big Island on the 2nd of January, we can't seem to get enough of Kona Coffee. And there are 2.5 days left in our itinerary before we head back to our home state of Colorado, we had yet another occasion to experience the world-class Kona Coffee; this time at this Big Island Coffee Roaster. My daughter wanted a little afternoon pick-me-up so we came here around 3:30pm. And what she got was Pandan Latte (iced). And we fell in love! This iced latte is simply earthy with all sorts of deliciousness. With their house-made pandan syrup, they hint the beverage with cinnamon and turmeric power dust to create this delightful drink and the final product is "oh my heavens" concoction. As ambient as a good coffee shop can have, the store merchandise to the interior design to the cleanliness of it, everything seems to check out at Big Island Coffee Roasters. Not to mention, service is/was friendly as well. Conveniently located from the oceanfront street (close from the airport as well), this is an easy access for anyone who is in a hurry for their busiest day. By the way, I got one of the branded travel towels ($29) as a souvenir and it's absolutely adorable to say the least.

Got up early, caught a flight to Hilo, when we landed, we needed COFFEE. This was just outside of the airport grounds and took us less than 10 mins to get here as I pulled into the wrong parking lot. Super cool to see the kids jumping into the water from the bridge as it was a humid day. My sisters ordered coffee and some snacks while my other sister and I grabbed a table right at the table. It was cool to watch the gal working and roasting the coffee. Sister 1 got a hot americano that she enjoyed at first but she got the grinds at the end and said it was bitter. Sister IV got an affogato with chocolate ice cream. Her first affogato and she hated it. She's not a coffee drinker. It was funny. I liked my affogato with vanilla ice cream. But it was strong. And sister 3 got an iced chai latte but switched with sister IV since she didn't like her affogato. It's a nice little coffee shop. A Person quietly reading in the corner, another couple chatting away. People sitting at the window chatting and watching the cars go by while others dropped in to pickup their choice of caffeine drinks. Price is super reasonable and a great start to our short trip.

Amazing! Vacationed in Hilo, HI. Fan of trying local/small business coffee shops. Yelped this gem and it was amazing. The inside has plenty of seating and has a homey vibe. Parking's kinda small. The ladies behind the counter were sweet and our coffees came out quick. I got a hot Pandan Latte and my husband got the Nitro cold brew. Both our drinks were smooth with mine having the tiniest bit of nutty sweetness. We liked it so much, we came back again on our last day before our flight home.

Best coffee spot in Hilo and possibly any where in the country. The coffee is perfection. I ordered an extra hot hakuna mocha and it was just the right temperature and sweetness. The service was amazing and the vibes were upbeat but zen. I walked in and was always able to just take a deep breath and then a big sip. I'm sad to be leaving Hilo for many reasons and this spit is definitely one of them.

I chose Big Island Coffee specifically because the website claims beans are roasted to order. Freshness is my reason to pay a premium, so this matters. Before ordering, I even contacted them to confirm this was true. They assured me it was. My first order arrived quickly and the coffee tasted good, but the roast date was already three days old before I had even placed the order. That directly contradicts the "roasted to order" claim. I reached out to explain the issue, and I was told they would look into what happened. I decided to give them another chance and placed a larger order on February 1. It didn't ship until February 8, and when it arrived on February 12, the roast date on the bags was February 1. The beans sat at least a week before shipping, which again doesn't match the expectation created by their marketing. The coffee itself is decent, but accuracy and transparency matter. Marketing something as roasted to order sets a clear expectation, and repeatedly missing that expectation erodes trust. This company and Chyll is not to be trusted. She just responds with scripted customer service talking points.

Came here and tried the pandan latte- I will now always be sad to not have that in my regular treat rotation. They make their own syrup, top it with a sprinkling of cinnamon and turmeric. Not too sweet, but just delicious!

Cozy and welcoming cafe with friendly service and delicious coffee! I tried the iced pandan latte and it was awesome. They don't use the artificial neon green pandan flavoring, so the taste is a bit more subtle. Nice floral, vanilla, and sweet notes. Very enjoyable on a sunny day! Will definitely be back to try more of their specialty coffee drinks.

We tried the #1 rated coffee shop in Hilo and I can see why it's rank so high. Pretty good coffee and treats as well. Very busy inside, and the parking lot is small and tight. Cute decor, kind of spendy for merch, decently priced food and drink though. I got their caramel latte, the cake batter foam cold brew, lemon cranberry scone and a macadamia nut/lilikoi butter (pb&j) sandwich. The sandwich was a huge hit for my husband (way good) and went finding ingredients to enjoy back in Portland. Kind of cool that they have their roasters on the back side to watch them roast their coffee.

AMAZING. AWESOME... Period. I'VE NEVER BEEN TO A CAFE BETTER THAN THIS! We tried the flight and latte iced, both of Both were amazing. My dad is really picky and a professional in coffee, and he even gave it a solid 5! Many seats, and the baristas are amazing... would like to visit again in my lifetime :)

Got a drip coffee. Very reasonable prices -only two dollars for a small drip coffee. Coffee is pretty strong, cute seating area inside and easy parking. Will stop by again next time I'm in Hilo.

Hilo's best kept secret tho I can't keep it a secret any longer!…read more FIrst stumbled upon Baumkuchen Farms 16 months ago when I visited the Big Island from Oahu... scouting where I would like to bring my college reunion group. They were gathering from places like Taiwan , Canada, the continental USA so betcha I wanted to show them only the best! Finding anything outside of downtown Hilo can be a challenge as WIFI gets a little sketch. Baumkuchen Farms is easy to find as they are marked on most Hilo (paper) maps. From the phone calls I made to the first welcome from Danielle who was on site to greet us on our scouting trip we felt welcomed. Danielle met us in the parking lot and guided us to the meeting place of the tour. She gave us a brief overview and showed us the bakery, the bathroom, the gift shop, before escorting us to "the hale" the meeting place under shade. Marcus, proprietor of the Farm with wife Maria, further told us about the rich history of the Baumkuchen estate as well as the products they baked and sold. Loved the tour of the farm where we saw vanilla beans growing in greenhouse, jurassic looking fruit trees and beautiful royal palms. A year later returned with my college friends who were absolutely impressed with the operation. We purchased baumkuchen cake, flavored cooking rock salts, other treats and of course ICE COLD drinks (in fact grabbed a few of these before the tour and after). And we enjoyed the tasty samples. In fact, have since seen these delectable morsels of Baumkuchen at Neiman Marcus in Honolulu at much higher price..! Still, nice to know where I can get more when I run out. Or, will have to take another trip to Hilo and Baumkuchen Farms! Thank you Maria, Marcus, Danielle for your hospitality. As a disclaimer, I'm not the biggest fan of shaved ice because of how sweet the dessert tends to be, and because more often than not, there are a bunch of artificial colors used in the fruit juices. When we looked at the menu, I was impressed and excited to see the emphasis on quality of their ingredients: no artificial flavors or colors, no aspartame, no high fructose corn syrup, and no preservatives. I was sold. Although we were tempted to create our own shaved ice, we ultimately went with "The Local", a soursop and liliko'i combo topped with haupia cream. Between the two flavors, I enjoyed the sour sop side a bit more since it was the one that was less sweet. The cream on top was absolutely delicious, and reminded me of the light and airy frothed milk cream you find on many boba drinks these days. There's a generous amount ladled on top, ensuring you can have some in every bite without having to carefully ration out the cream. Overall, I'm a fan of Kula Shave Ice. Definitely a great dessert to enjoy on a hot day. Worth checking out if you're ever in Hilo.

Instead, Keaukaha General Store (within easy walking distance of the Port of Hilo) provided a great selection of sundries, some souvenirs of Hilo, and a small menu of Hawaiian favorite dishes at prices that were the lowest I've seen in Hawaii. My wife and I came here twice: first while walking into town, when we picked up souvenirs and an unexpected loco moco plate. It was a lot less crowded then, with us being the only ones there...allowing us to have a completely different experience. When we came back as we headed back towards the ship, other cruisers from the ship had discovered this place, and were stocking up on various things. It's a large modern space inside, with things organized displayed very neatly. There was no sense I needed to check for expiration dates. There was a portable ATM machine right by the door. A decent selection of alcohol at good prices were displayed (e.g. $8.81 for a bottle of Barefoot Cab or $18.99 for a 12 pack of Budweiser). I took the opportunity to get something I've not seen elsewhere: a bag of dried clams (aka Asari) for $4.19. Ended up finishing it that night...was really good. It has an all day menu, and was able to order a Loco Moco for breakfast. The all beef patty was very thick and dense, definitely from a frozen patty...good for Salisbury steak or Loco Moco, but wouldn't be great for a burger. The brown gravy was served hot and hadn't congealed, and the 1 egg had been cooked over easy, just as requested. It was obviously freshly made. It was packed to-go, with condiments and utensils available near the registers. There wasn't much space to eat inside, but because it wasn't too busy, found a space to sit in the back. I scarfed it down (probably too fast) while my wife finished her shopping. Also in the back, there are gourmet coffee machines and a chest freeze full of hand scoopable ice cream. There is a Pepsi self serve soda machine, along with various sizes of chips. My wife initially bought a couple of t-shirts as requested souvenirs for our travel mates ($25 a piece), and bought another one as we were heading back. On the 1st trip, she also liked a perfume body mist...the tester was the last one so the attendant sold it for half price ($14). For us, she bought a Hilo waterproof sticker for $2.75. And her favorite part of the store was the small portable Pokémon card machine, that dispensed random Japanese Pokémon cards for a quarter. She kept changing out dollars for quarters and ended up getting $5.75 of them...and a couple of them were hollos that we like. They do charge a 3.25% credit card fee, so cash is preferred when possible.

The space is airy, and on our visit, decorated for Easter. We were immediately greeted by Paul. The restaurant is staffed by him, and one other employee. The menu is short, and all the better for it. Paul explained the menu and gave us recommendations. I was already interested in the Pasta de Marco, which appears to be a part of a regular menu. Both were perfect, incredibly fresh, all ingredients balanced, beautifully presented. Paul had us end with the Belgium waffle. I've had waffles in Belgium, and these were the best I've had. Crispy, soft, with berries, whip cream, and powdered sugar, it didn't even need the (warm!) syrup. This experience felt like being a guest in the chef's home. Paul treated all customers as a friend, he was funny, relaxed, and personable. I also personally appreciated it is the safest restaurant for me to eat at as he hates bell peppers as much as I do!
