THE LIGHTER THE BEAN, THE MORE CAFFEINE! Just one of the interesting things I learned while here. Being an avid dark roast coffee drinker I always assumed the darker the roast the more caffeine, but not so! The coffee here was great and I really enjoyed the smooth taste of the coffee, which I also found out is due to the low acidity in the bean from the rainfall in the region (240 inches a year). Juanette, who gave the brief tour, was great. She is such a kind spirit and gave us lots of tips about the island, different hikes, etc. Will definitely be returning here before our trip is over. read more

Stopped by Hilo Coffee Mill for a tour and lunch before heading to Volcanoes National Park and we were not disappointed! The owner, Juanette, personally gave us a tour of their estate and discussed the coffee making process. We learned so much and had a great coffee tasting afterwards and delicious lunch wraps. The staff was wonderful and provided us with an incredible experience despite the fact they were getting ready for a big festival the next day! Everything far exceeded our expectations. Hilo Coffee Mill seems to really care about their farmers, products, and visitors. I was only disappointed I didn't get to try their renowned portuguese bean soup that others raved about due to the upcoming event. read more

I appreciate agrotourism, but was not impressed here. The coffee shop itself is a tourist trap. Wasn't allowed to look at the farm and couldn't see much from the shop. I ordered a latte and it was heartlessly made, which makes me sad as my first thought was 'Starbucks is better'. That's not a normal thought for me. Haha. I guess I had no idea what this place was. I thought it was a little tourist spot about growing coffee in Hawaii. Turned out it was nothing more than a coffee shop with a little gift shop and small bites. They didn't even have they coffee that they grew. We ordered our coffee and quickly left. Seemed like just another coffee shop to me... without the drive-thru. As a coffee bar... I was pretty excited love these little businesses but the people in the store - was like I stepped OUT of Hawaii. The best part of Hilo are the people, love the small town vibe. Just stopped by because we were curious. So glad we did. The staff was so friendly. We sampled the mac nut butter and ordered a variety of drinks. The smoothies were made with fresh ingredients and our boys loved their mango and berry smoothies. Our daughter got the vanilla bean milkshake. Worth the trip to the Big Island! We fell in love with the mill while staying at KMC. Food was great and really felt at home. We still order online to keep the feeling alive. My new husband and I stopped for a cup of coffee on our way to Akaka Falls. We got a delicious cup of coffee and enjoyed the wealth of knowledge shared with us. While there we were encouraged to sample many different Hawaiian brews acquiring an appreciation for the low acidity of an east Hawaiian brew. This female owned and operated mill is on the most beautiful grounds and operates with dignity and pride for the art of processing Hawaiian grown coffee. read more

Outside of the chocolate covered macadamia nuts (which are amazing and very addictive) our service was below average. Samples were extremely small and the tour seemed more like a sales pitch rather than an informative coffee session. We had a coffee tour in Kona which topped this visit by far! read more

Read the reviews and was recommended by a friend - glad we stopped, the coffee was so delicious! We had a cup of the pineapple coffee and it needed nothing added. So good. We weren't offered a tour (bummer) and the coffee was really pricey (that delicious coffee was something like $25 for a half pound??) but it was good and they gave us the background on the price (all local coffee, all biodegradable cups, etc). If you are traveling close by, you should stop for a cup of coffee. I don't know if I would drive out there just for a cup....well, now that I think about that pineapple coffee while home in Seattle.....yea, I wish I could get in the car and drive 20 minutes or so for a cup. Other than that, the workers weren't very helpful, and the only samples were Maui coffee, no Kona. But they sell Kona? The guy in the roasting room seemed annoyed we were there. Yummy food. I only wish there were more things on the menu. I really like that they specialize in East Hawaii and Kau coffee. I think it's superior to Kona or other coffees and if you're not sure they have tastings. I like that you can sit outside. There are so few places around town that let you sit out and enjoy the fresh air. Also, I use their Internet, which is pretty zippy compared to the connection I have at home. Paradise in your cup! The Hilo Coffee Mill was one of the highlights of the Gourmet Volcano shore excursion offered through the Pride of America. You start your day at the coffee mill and frankly i could have spent half the day there sampling coffees, talking with the owner and workers, and selecting my coffee and other goods to send back to the mainland. If you like being given a coffee sample in a thimble size hospital pill cup then this is your place. By the way, you'll only get to sample the one flavor they are serving that particular day. They are very fond of their coffees according to their prices. $20.00 for a half pound. I was a UH student and was at The Mill on the last weekend of March 2015 on my spring break for the tour and lunch combo. Both were fantastic! Jeanette led the tour and I got a taste of a coffee berry! At the end of the tour, Jeanette made me a cup of vanilla latte with lunch. That vanilla latte hooked me....FOREVER! The atmosphere of The Mill combined with the fantastic coffee and staff really made the overall experience unforgettable. I left that day with three lbs of full city roast Maui estate and a lb of Monsoon Macaroon. I keep thinking back on that amazing day. Now that I'm out of beans, it's time to order more! read more

Stopped at Hilo coffee mill and was greeted with snacks, coffee from Hilo and a small tour of the coffee farm! It is amazing

So I wanted some coffee, and we spotted this place and pulled in. We went to put our order in for coffee, and the lady behind the counter told us that we should check out the Farmers Market outside. She recommended the kalua pork sliders and the burracos. We grabbed our very delicious Maui Dark Roast coffee and headed out to the market. It was small as far as a farmers market goes, and it's only on Saturday's that they have the market. There was a tent setup where we ordered the slider and burracos. The kalua pork slider is marinated in caramelized coffee/ BBQ sauce... AMAZING!!!! It came with a side of homemade cole slaw. The burracos is essentially a breakfast burrito filled with potatoes, red bell peppers, Portuguese sausage, cheese, green onion, and fried egg, very delicious. I also have to say that all the stuff on the menu is all natural, no preservatives. We will be returning here on a Saturday morning again next time are visiting. Prices were right, location easy, delicious food and coffee. read more
