Lovely little garden lunch spot! It was a bit tricky for us to find, but there was a nice neighbor who showed us the way :) . Pretty sure the menu is all vegetarian and they have gf options too! We were riding our bikes down Old Volcano Road and came across this place while bike riding. As we nosed around, we found a gallery and cafe surrounded by a lovely, well-tended garden, whimsical collections of art displays all around in outdoor rooms, carefully tucked in among the plants and trees, and sculptures throughout the garden. Noble, the sweetest, biggest rabbit I have ever seen, sat beneath a small grove of trees in a protective enclosure, nibbling on a plate of fruit and veggies. It had rained overnight and was off and on that morning, so the grounds were pretty wet, our shoes squishing as we walked across the grass and into the cafe. A woman greeted us and said they would be open shortly and that we might want to look through the adjacent gallery until then. There is a lot of art here - paintings, photography, handmade jewelry, wood carvings, textiles - is just some of their inventory. We were seated right away when the cafe was ready. Their vegetarian menu includes vegan and gluten-free options. They had two soups - a mushroom miso and a vegetable curry. I had the curry soup, my hubby had the chili, a regular feature on the menu. Our meals came out and were beautifully plated. I reached for my phone to take photos and - arrrrgh - no phone. My husband handed me his phone annnnnd - dead battery! We figured it was the universe's way of saying "just be in the moment and enjoy", so we did. Our meals were hearty, delicious, and well prepared. We ate quietly and enjoyed the flavours of our meal. After we finished, we said goodbye and crossed the grounds to our bikes. We gave Noble a scratch behind the ears and pedaled up the road, heading back to the hale before it started raining again. read more

One of the most picturesque Cafes we have ever been too. Lot of beautiful sculptures and a wonderfully maintained garden. No better place to sip coffee and munch on a sandwich. We intended to get some takeout food on the way to volcano national Park, but turned out to be an hour long stop. Kids loved exploring the garden. Great place to take family portraits as well. What a treasure to compliment a sweet getaway to the jungles of Volcano! The owner was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. I loved that before we were seated, we were introduced by name to the woman preparing our food. We stumbled upon this place while looking for a Thai food truck and I'm so glad we ended up eating here instead. This place is an absolute hidden gem. The food is delicious and the portions are very generous, perfect for fueling up before or post hike at the Volcano National Park. The people working there are friendly souls and helped answered all our questions about the park. The grounds are so peaceful and zen that we lost track of time. What a gem Cafe Ono turned out to be! Not only is this a cafe, but it's also an art gallery, shop, and garden! We looked for a vegan lunch spot and Cafe Ono popped up as an option. My fiance and I both had different bowls of soup that came with the most delicious bread and a side salad. Lucky for us, they also make a homemade vegan carrot cake that will knock your socks off! The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating and shared the history of the Cafe and Gallery with us. I loved that you could sit inside, outside in the garden, or even in a covered tent full of artwork. You won't be disappointed with your visit to Cafe Ono! read more

One of the most wonderful places to eat on the big island. The food was just amazing (fresh, flavorful and delicious). The service was so lovely. The best part was the location. I ate outside in a beautiful garden surrounded by gorgeous plants, chirping birds and lovely statues. There is a really nice arts store within the restaurant where I was able to pick up great gifts. Oh what a find! Hubby and I were staying at KMC for two nights. We chose to come to Café Ono for the vegetarian lunch and art gallery. After eating our artichoke, hummus, and cheese open face sandwich with miso mushroom soup we wandered through the gallery and gallery. It was a delight to be greeted by Ira Ono, restaurant and gallery owner during our visit. He gave us some personal background on the local artists whose artwork were displayed among his own. I took home a resin owl piece which can be displayed in my own garden. read more

Only open on weekends, Cafe Ono is a worthy stop on your way, during, or out of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It is located on a garden estate, so you can choose to eat in the same building as their art shop where they have individual tables or outside in their tents where their art is also displayed. In the tents is one large table, so you can talk to other customers if you want! Upon entering, it's a little confusing at first, but you choose to sit where ever you want. If you decide to eat in one of the tents, make sure to let them know so they know to bring you menus. The food was a little expensive but the setting, service, and food quality make it worth it. They have daily specials as well as daily soups. I got the grilled pesto artichoke sandwich with their daily special soup (mushroom seaweed) and my partner got the daily special - a slice of pizza, a brownie, and split pea soup. I believe all dishes come with soup, garlic bread, and salad. The garlic bread is homemade and full of grains! It was super tasty. Although the food looked a little light (not volume wise but the actual type of food), I actually had trouble finishing my dish and had to get a to go box. That being said I have a small stomach... anyways, service wise they are fantastic. I believe the owners - one was taking orders and she was very patient and happy to explain and answer any questions. The other came out to the tent to ask how everyone was doing and tell us about the estate and art as well. The art they make is super cute! Unfortunately again the prices were a little high for me to justify buying it but I was very tempted. They also allow people to actually stay at the estate. Plus... the Cafe which is run by the sweetest Aunties and they make the best vegetarian food! Tried this place on a whim after a morning of hiking at the Volcano Park. My friend and I were a bit skeptical at first because the menu is vegetarian but gave it a go because the owner was the sweetest person ever. Let me tell you I was glad we did because our meal was one of the best we had on the big island. I had the artichoke pesto panini sandwich with vegetable soup and side salad with balsamic vinaigrette it was to die for! My friend had a large mushroom soup and half of my sandwich which he raved about. Their coffee was so good and the coconut and chocolate drizzle dessert was perfect. Besides amazing food and friendly staff Cafe Ono has beautiful gardens look for the secret garden and a beautiful gallery.
