Plus... the Cafe which is run by the sweetest Aunties and they make the best vegetarian food! Fabulous ambiance, all are welcome at Volcano Garden Arts Cafe Ono for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays. The burrito special was a complete meal with soup, salad, blue tortilla chips, burrito, fresh salsa, sour cream, 3 seed garlic bread and a super chocolate brownie cupcake. I ate half for lunch and took the rest home for dinner. Everything is so fresh and made with love in the kitchen by Rosie and Adelfa. Tried this place on a whim after a morning of hiking at the Volcano Park. My friend and I were a bit skeptical at first because the menu is vegetarian but gave it a go because the owner was the sweetest person ever. Let me tell you I was glad we did because our meal was one of the best we had on the big island. I had the artichoke pesto panini sandwich with vegetable soup and side salad with balsamic vinaigrette it was to die for! My friend had a large mushroom soup and half of my sandwich which he raved about. Their coffee was so good and the coconut and chocolate drizzle dessert was perfect. Besides amazing food and friendly staff Cafe Ono has beautiful gardens look for the secret garden and a beautiful gallery. I was pleasantly surprised by this cute little cafe. It's pretty small inside but I think they have outdoor seating as well. The menu is unique and I definitely think caters to certain palates, but this wasn't an issue for us. I was at surprised by the prices at first for a lunch place, most entrees around $16, but practically everything comes with soup AND salad AND bread. Very reasonable price structure for the amount of food you receive. I got the quiche and the split pea vegetable soup and was very happy with my meal. Their house balsamic is awesome. My husband got the lasagna and seaweed mushroom soup, also so yummy. We finished our meal with the vanilla ice cream, delightful. We arrived around 2:15 and they were quite busy and just one server meant it was a little bit of slow going, but the waitress was so kind and funny. Not at all stressed by the busyness, and she was efficient at juggling all the tables. The only thing stopping me from giving this place 5 stars is the fact that I'm pretty sure everything warm was just microwaved before being served, as I could hear the beeping and the microwave door over and over again. My soup was lukewarm when I got it. That being said, the food was all still very delicious, and I know we arrived pretty late in the afternoon. Would recommend and would definitely return. read more

After visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we were starving & stumbled upon this adorable cafe! The owner was SO friendly and even offered us complimentary California wine. The food was delicious & healthy. My egg sandwich came with soup and a salad. Everything was clearly homemade! 10/10 recommend! Well this place was an amazing find. The grounds are a beautiful rainforest sanctuary with umbrella covered tables. We were greeted by Ira Ono himself - artist, tropical landscaper, and of course restaurant owner. The restaurant is open Thursday through Sunday for brunch or lunch. The food is delicious, fresh vegetarian cuisine. Our group had the lasagna and the quiche, each served a cup of soup, a salad and homemade garlic bread. The servers were friendly and prompt with taking our order and getting our food out. We were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny afternoon so we could sit at one of the garden tables. (There some tables inside and covered tables as well for rainy days.) After lunch, we wondered into the gallery filled with local and regional art and did not come away empty-handed! My wife who is also an artist (and a Pisces) got along famously with Mr. Ono of similar calling and sign. Thanks for a memorable afternoon. read more

We almost went to the Thai food truck on the side of the road because we were hungry after a hike but we are SO happy we decided to checkout Cafe Ono! Healthy food, large portions, super friendly owner and staff AND beautiful zen outdoor garden to eat and roam around in! Their ice tea and brownie were such a treat to enjoy at the end of my meal. I had the special of the day which was a burrito, salad, soup, and brownie! And my son got the artichoke sandwich and I tried a bite- it was delicious! Pricing, ambiance, food, all get 5 stars. They also had 2 rescued bunnies and a grassy area with soccer balls that my kiddo was thrilled with. Their little gallery shop inside also has many incredible pieces and fun items to take home. It definitely is not a fine dining place, and they're not trying to be, so I wouldn't expect it to be. Bring your aloha spirit, kick back, and enjoy! I didn't capture any photos of my food unfortunately but the plate was full and super yummy looking :) drive slowly as you start to approach the destination because it can be easy to miss the sign to turn into the driveway! They served water with big piece of mold in it. We didn't realize till after drinking half of the water in the cup. The food tasted ok but honestly I'm so traumatized. Never been to a place that had mold in a water cup. It makes me question how they wash their cups and other cooking equipments. Hopefully we don't get sick. Recently visited the Big Island to do some hiking in Volcano National Park. We got up super early to hit the trails so by lunch time we were famished! My traveling companions are both vegan so it was awesome to discover Cafe Ono! This has to be one of the most charming locations for a restaurant I've ever been to. There's an art gallery and apparently they give tours here and the artist/owner encourages you to touch the art work! There's a beautiful garden with some sculptures and various garden art and the cutest little Japanese inspired tea garden with all these little teapots! And there's even a bunny! The menu is small but there's a food selection of vegetarians vegan options. I had the pesto panini served with greens and soup. Everything was super fresh and I begged the staff to let me buy some of their Green Goddess dressing. Sadly, it's not for sale. Portions are great for the price and definitely satiated our appetities and fueled us up for afternoon hikes. They don't sell alcohol but it is complimentary with a gallery tour. I REALLY wanted a refreshing glass of white wine to accompany lunch and after asking politely was given a glass! The staff are gracious and kind. A friend and I recently enjoyed a delicious and lovely lunch in the garden this last week. The staff could not have provided better, kinder or more professional service with charm and thoughtfulness. After leaving, I realized I'd misplace my bracelet. I called to inquire if it had been found. Not only was my call managed thoughtfully, but the girls went into the garden and looked for it. This restaurant is really difficult to find and they need more signage from the street; however, once you find it you'll never want to leave. The cafe was only open a few days a week when we visited in Dec 2021. Their outdoor seating space was plentiful - covered or uncovered, private tents, all spaced out very comfortably. They also had a few tables inside. I received a huge amount of food with my order. I enjoyed the 4 cheese spinach crustless quiche, which was to die for. It came with a sizable salad full of fresh vegetable and chickpeas and a house made mustard dressing. It also came with a cup of split pea soup, which was so different and more flavorful than any split pea soup I've ever tasted. Then they threw in a couple of garlic toasts and multigrain chips. Ira Ono, the owner/artist was on hand to tell us all about the place and the art, all of which is for sale. The cafe menu is vegetarian with many vegan and gluten free options, which I appreciated. I had the crustless quiche which came with a salad and soup and garlic bread (which I gave to my hubby). The soup was mushroom and seaweed with a miso base, which was a little bland. The quiche was very good. DH had lasagna, with salad, soup and garlic bread. His soup was potato corn chowder and it had no flavor. He didn't eat it. The lasagna was okay, but also a bit bland. It could be spiced up a bit and it would be really good. We also shared the homemade vanilla ice cream which was delicious! Cafe Ono is a cute little vegetarian cafe in Volcano which is attached to Volcano Garden Arts. We aren't vegetarians, but we found this place on yelp and it sounded like the best food in Volcano. (-; We shared a pot of pineapple tea for $5 which was plenty of tea for 2 people with free hot water refills. I enjoyed the 4-cheese spinach quiche, which came with both soup and salad. I chose the Moroccan lentil & garbanzo bean soup and the salad with goddess dressing. Friendly place with impressive food! There was a delicious hint of nutmeg in the quiche. The garlic bread was homemade on an unusual bread. I highly recommend Cafe Ono in Volcano! Have no fear. The food is awesome, and it does not taste like what non-vegetarians envision vegetarian fare to taste like. I have been to this place twice. The first time I went with family in December 2011. My family and I really enjoyed the food, so I decided to bring my friends there when I was in Volcano last month. Everything was excellent! My boyfriend had the vegetarian pasta, and he loved it. I enjoyed a glass of their iced tea. I had a bowl of their soup, a slice of quiche, macaroons (which really taste just like samoa girl scout cookies), and this raspberry bar, which I forgot the exact name of but was delicious. My friends really were intrigued by the pet goat, and we enjoyed perusing the gift shop. We also went back to see this meditation area that is surrounded by tall pines. The owner suggested we go back there. When we all got to Kona, we were still thinking of Cafe Ono. And now that I'm back home, I am still thinking about it. Visit this place. Cafe Ono, named after the owner, is a delightful little eatery located in a pleasant garden gallery setting. I ordered the miso mushroom soup, which came with the traditional broth and two different kinds of seaweed. That was delightful. My entrée, which was a hearty homestyle baked lasagna for $15 also came with a salad of fresh organic greens (which I dressed with a homemade basalmic vinaigrette) and yummy garlic bread. The meal was full of flavor - I should note that this is a vegetarian café. To drink, we shared a pot of pineapple black tea. Very apropos! Dessert was an organic vegan homemade carrot cake slice. I'm not a big fan of vegan dishes, because most of them taste a lot like cardboard. However, I wonder if they cheated, because the buttercream frosting was so delightful. In my opinion, this is one of the better places to eat in Volcano near the National Park. Try it for yourself! read more

This place is off the beaten path and so quaint!!! The cafe is in the middle of beautiful grounds and a wonderful sectioned gallery. The food first. We were touring the volcanoes national park which is close by and were looking for a good place to eat. This was perfect. We got the spinach and cheese quiche, which comes with chips, a side salad and a soup. We got the vegetable soup was was delicious with the successful garlic bread that came with it! The chips were like whole grain tortillas/nachos and so good! The salad had lettuce, cucumber, carrot, green pepper, a stray kalamata and we got the balsamic vinaigrette. The balsamic was the best one I've ever had!! It was creamy and delicious! I actually dipped the chips in it!! Yummy! The quiche was delicious and had a good amount of cheese. read more
