Menu and first glass of wine flight

We finished hiking VNP around noon which is also when this winery opened so it was perfect timing. I would say the wines here are not your normal wine but more fruit forward with a local influence. They let us share a flight between the 2 of us which was perfect. We enjoyed the first 4 wines and even bought a bottle of the Volcano Red which tastes like a sangria to take home. The Muscat dry was our second favorite. The Macadamia Nut Honey is more of a mead which was my least favorite and the Infusion tea tasted very bitter. Staff are super nice.

A quick search of nearby places while in volcano bay park landed us here. There was plenty of parking out front but they were definitely busy. We opted to share a flight which was a nice option. The wines are definitely on the sweeter side but are unique. With each pour, they explained the flavor profile and gave a quick history of the making behind them. We were a little too full or we would have ordered the charcuterie board as well. There is both indoor and outdoor seating available. The staff were very friendly and accommodating.

We spent the morning at the volcano and couldn't resist stopping by for a tasting of wine and tea. First, the white tea was refreshing, light and cool. Since it's not very processed the light floral notes really came through. Then the black tea was warm and comforting. We really enjoyed both, I was so delighted they also had this available. The wine was equally as good, they explained each wine as they poured it and we enjoyed it with a nice charcuterie board. They also had salts, cookies, fruit butters and other lovely things to explore. Such a treat to have found such a great place near the volcano!

I wanted to surprise my wife for her birthday and get a few gifts from the Volcano Winery! I was having internet problems so I called them direct. Nikki helped me find everything I wanted and went above and beyond for me! She arranged the shipping and gave excellent suggestions to really make this a special birthday gift. If you are on the big island and want that special flavor you can't find anywhere else, the Volcano Winery is a must stop! If you are elsewhere you can have a little Aloha shipped to you! Mahalo Nui Loa Nikki and the Volcano Winery!

This place was a worthwhile stop during our traverse to Volcanoes National Park. Located not far from the Park, it was easy to incorporate into our itinerary. Their tasting room was simple but featured a nicely arranged and nicely kept area with standing high tables. There were some outside pavilions with tables available as well. Tastings were on a walk-in basis only. We came in toward the end of the day and, hence, it was not too busy. There were a few set tasting regimens available. My wife and I split a tasting and were favorably impressed. Our friendly server added to the pleasant experience. They also had some customizable small charcuterie boards available that allowed us to have a snack with our wine. Overall, this was a nice stop to complement our activities on the Big Island and it satisfied that occasional wine craving that we get.

Such a great little find! Volcano Winery has a laid-back, local charm that makes you instantly feel relaxed. The staff were super friendly and really knew their stuff -- we learned a lot while tasting. They have some really good wines (a few with local fruit blends that are fun to try), and the outdoor seating area is the perfect spot to kick back and enjoy the view. We shared a charcuterie board that went perfectly with the wines. Definitely worth a stop if you're exploring Volcanoes National Park.

Fun little stop! I got the wine flight and tried unique wines to Hawaii. Loved learning about them & they were tasty. Would recommend to anyone into wine. They have a parking lot & had no issues. Place itself is quaint & cute. Service was fast, knowledgeable, & friendly. Great price for the wine flight too!

Same comments here. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff, wine is utter garbage. Got the classic tasting and ended up having one sip and throwing the rest out.

I'm a sweet tooth but there's always a charcuterie that I've tried before that's also delicious!!

I've been here several times before and every visit has been 5 stars! The staff is always friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. Have brought different friends and family over the years and they are always thankful that I brought them here. Very casual and informal, and just good vibes. Choice of snack platters go well with the wine flights. Wine tasting is well worth the $20 price. 6 wines that are very different from fruit blends to tea infused, even macadamia nut honey. This place does not disappoint and I love supporting local! I always walk away with ordering a couple of bottles to ship home. This time I purchased knitted beanie hats and my daughter bought sone of their cigars. Love it!!! Can't wait to go back next time I'm on the Big Island!!!

This was a fun place to stop by to say we've been to the most southern winery in the US. It was also a great break from the heat in the middle of our Volcano day. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The winery itself has a small indoor area with some standing tables but then a lot of out door seating which is perfect given the lovely Hawaiian weather. The wine itself was unfortunately not that great. It is VERY sweet, so if you love sweet wines, then this is the place for you! The only flight tasting they offer is to try all 7 wines, 1oz pour, which normally I would love but given we had to drive back to Hilo and also had more hiking to do, I wish they would offer a smaller flight. Was a unique experience and glad we tried it.

Had the most amazing wine.... macadamia nut honey wine. If I could make a wine that I would enjoy, this would be it!! We got here 20 minutes before closing time after spending the day at Volcanoes National Park. This place has boutique wines and cookies and fruit butters and tea made from camellia plants. They even have a black tea infused honeybee that I also really enjoyed. My husband and I shared a 375 ml bottle of the honey wine and ended our day on a happy note! The local red headed pheasants and nene were cavorting amongst the vines out front when we departed for our hotel in Hilo. Great stop for after your day at the volcano' Simple and lovely and plenty of places inside and outside to enjoy your wine

Wine tasting! $20/person for the whole taste testing experience

Loved this place... especially the cool workers. Haha they were welcoming from the start and even gave us a few laughs during our tasting. My friends and I got the "Classic Wine Tasting" which was $20/person. Not too bad for getting to try 6-7 wines! Our favorite hands down was the Infusion Tea Wine. I was shocked how much this tasted JUST like tea. I think as someone who is a novice wine drinker, this surprised me. Other than this, I really liked the Volcano Blush. I would definitely purchase both, but I can see why the Tea Wine was $42 for half the normal size bottle. I recommend checking this place out! Good experience

Definitely a place you want to stop, if you like trying really interesting wines. Sadly, I was hoping with their location and name, that it meant I'd get to try a wine with a uniquely Hawaiian terroir, but as of when we visited last month, all the wines in their tasting were still made from imported grapes from California (as a Californian, that's much less interesting). But, while that would have been fun, the real highlight is that one of their wines also uses local guava, and two include local jaboticaba berries, a fruit I'd never heard of, but which clearly makes great wine as well. Their "blush" was a particular standout in my opinion (it's actually a mixture of 70% Symphony, one of my favorite white wine grapes, and 30% jaboticaba, which gives it the color of a blush - I had to buy a bottle), but the red blend (cab, carignan, alicante and 15% jaboticaba berry) was also solid. The tasting also included 2 meads made with local honey - not, as I had originally understood, macadamia nut *flavored* mead, rather, mead made from honey that came from macadamia nut trees. One unflavored, the other flavored with their own black tea, both also excellent. We bought a bottle of their semi-sweet mead, as well - though I will note, I might not have if I'd known we were going to discover another meadery just outside Hilo a few hours later (Big Island Meadery) selling 750ml bottles of their roughly equally good semi-sweet mead, also made with local honey, for about the same price as Volcano's 375ml bottles. Still - great mead. The tasting is a bit pricey at $20, and sadly, they do *not* have any sort of tasting comp for buying bottles, but then, we still bought two bottles, so I guess they know what they're doing! Finally, to answer one question I couldn't find a solid answer to in advance, in case anyone else has it: you can't bring outside food into the tasting room itself, but you can absolutely eat it outside, where they have a large tented area set up for guests' use - and it is even properly tented against rain, I can vouch from personal experience. You just have to go back in to get each taster, a very small inconvenience.

When I came into the shop, the owner was helping the only other customer there. I walked around and found some bottles of what I was looking for in the back, where a woman was wrapping baskets. She made no eye contact with me, and didn't offer a greeting. I remained in the back for over five minutes, repeatedly looking at her and trying to get her attention, but she refused to engage. I returned to the front, where the owner had finished cashing out that one customer and was chatting with him. He made no acknowledgement of my existence for at least another five minutes. The other customer then left and the owner finally asked what he could do for me. I said that I just wanted some help. He told me that it was a very busy time of year (note: at this point I was the only customer in the shop, previously there were two, including myself), and that I need to have patience. This felt like a highly passive aggressive thing to say. But I desperately wanted a certain liqueur for my husband, so I ignored the comment and checked out the bottles. He left me in the back to help another customer. By the time I returned to the cash register with my bottle of choice, he had just started to cash her out. A "she's been waiting, would it be okay if I assist her" might have been nice and what I would have done but I let that slide too. The customer left and he started cashing me out. Being one who's both honest and upfront, I told him that I understand both being busy and patient, I'm an elementary school teacher with Hawai'i DOE; the customer service was deeply lacking, and that I had thought the woman in the back didn't even work there, but rather was a volunteer. He repeated his line about it being a busy time of year (at this point I think there were three customers, including myself, but not including the distributor near the register). I said something to the effect of, "too busy wrapping baskets to even greet a customer," and reminded him of my very busy job. The owner then asked me to leave. As I was walking out I heard him tell the distributor that this had never happened before, but if you look through previous reviews, there are complaints about this woman. Ultimately the owner did me a huge favor. The bottle I was going to buy retails for $45-$52, he was selling it for $79. Another bottle that he was listing for $87, a competitor had for $64. Extremely greedy in addition to rude? All of DOE will hear about this experience!
