We spent the day driving from our home on the Kona side to see some of the beautiful waterfalls on the north east side of the island. A day in the car made us ready for sitting down to a nice meal. Luckily for us, we ended up at Don's Grill. The menu had an unbelievably large number of items to select from. Our waitress Elizabeth was pleasant, helpful and attentive. The food came out very quickly and was delicious. The price was very fair and the desserts were the perfect ending to a nice meal. The only mistake that we made was going too late in the day because the mud pie in this picture was already gone to earlier customers for the day. It would be worth it to drive to Hilo just to eat at Don's Grill again and I will, only next time I'll get there early so I can get that mud pie. read more

This is a low key, local dining experience. Good basic menu items like a classic club sandwich and fries, to rotisserie chicken, ribs, or steak entrees and a wide variety of daily specials that change regularly. For the first daily special, I was lucky enough to get the Katsu Chicken with the curry sauce on the side which was fabulous - thin and crispy just as katsu should be! Hubby had steak and shrimp which was gone in 2 minutes, and he said was very good, nicely cooked and freshly made. I also ordered the mud pie and was the best on the island in my opinion. Don't let the location deter you. Seating is super clean and comfy but certainly basic. During our visit we ate here for 2 lunches and 1 dinner. The service was awesome. Greeted as soon as we came in, water refills, check ins. The place is on the small side and what I would call a "pop pop" diner. After traveling sometimes you need something solid and reliable. That is what I would categorize this. Large portions and "safe" if you have a long car ride or flight ahead of you. Don's grill seems to be one of the best kept secrets in Hilo. It's got that quaint, little diner feel, tucked away in a neighborhood near Big Island Candies. Their daily specials and desserts are prominently displayed on tv monitors. I had the liver and onions which was perfectly prepared. The entrees come with ample sides and a roll. My friend purchased the sautéed ahi. The dinner rolls are slightly sweet and tasty. The servers are friendly and efficient. The food orders came out quickly and the food was hot and freshly prepared. The bussing staff are quick to clear away the dirty dishes. And the desserts...aaaaamazing!! They have seating for couples and can accommodate large groups. Went there for the first time on a Friday and really loved it. Obviously a local favorite the place was pretty full at 4 in the afternoon, a good sign. We were waited on like we were the only customer in spite of a full house, they were wonderful and the food was great. Most places have 1 or 2 things on the menu I'd enjoy but I can't wait to go back because almost everything on the menu I want to try. Corn chowder was regretful. Total waste of time, energy and money. The NY Steak was not seasoned and cooked to a perfect medium well. Which would have been awesome if I hadn't asked for medium. Granted, it was a very thin 6 oz steak at a sub mediocre "grill". So, I should probably cut the chef some slack. The steamed vegetables (brocolli, carrots and cauliflower) were just like my Mom used to make- straight from the bag. The fried shrimp were actually very good. Seriously. The server was super nice, so the single star is purely based on the food. She was easily deserving of a 20% tip. We had a $15 voucher received as a gift. Still paid too much.
