I think I'm used to the thicker, sweeter syrups some places use, which makes the flavors more vibrant. This felt more like a lighter, juice-style shaved ice. That's not a bad thing at all--it just wasn't what I was craving, and it didn't quite hit the spot for either of us. That said, this review isn't meant to knock the business at all. I definitely recommend trying it for yourself and ordering what you like. I may have ordered the wrong flavors and probably should've gone with one of their specials (the lava flow sounds like the move). Mr. Ed himself helped my husband and I decide on many pastries to try and none of them disappointed! I only snapped a photo of one, as the others we'd eaten before I even thought to take photos. They were too good to wait! While getting our pastries, Mr. Ed was also kind enough to share some of his story and it was wonderful to hear directly from the shop owner why he is there and his love for the island and the town. The shop is cozy and feels family ran so it was just a lovely stop on the big island for not only delicious baked treats, but wonderful company as well.

Not many options in the area but all you need is one good one and this is definitely a good one. Pi'ilani Kitchen shares a building with a retail/souvenir shop and you order from inside the building and food comes out from a literal hole in the wall. We got the roast beef special, which was packed with tender roast beef (think circa 2017 before shrinkflation went nuts), American cheese, caramelized onions in a hoagie roll. It was also sort of a French dip as the bread absorbed a sizable amount of tasty cooking liquid. This however, made the sandwich a bit of a soggy mess at the end. A tasty, cheesy, soggy mess. Once you start, you can't stop to put the sandwich down. They give you a fork for a reason. We went with chips over ulu (breadfruit) macaroni salad. There's a handful of unmarked stalls in the front with a few tables of seating. Bathroom stall exists but it's more like a shed they built around a toilet and sink with unfinished walls. It is clean though and stocked with toilet paper.
