Did you think about going & didn't? Well, that would be a big mistake if you missed enjoying Two Ladies Kitchen! Standing in line is part of the experience, even in the Hilo rain! I bought 8 pieces, (2) strawberry mochi, azuki bean, lilikoi mochi, sweet potato, coconut, and a peanut butter, and it was just plain delicious! Call in early to save your favorites! Can also go early to KTA.... It's Da Best!!
Our coffee farm tour recommended Two Ladies as a stop in Hilo and boy oh boy am I glad they did! Their fresh mochi is truly soooo soft and delicious!!! I got both fresh fruit and a mix sampler pack.
Delicious and generous business! Food 5/5 We ordered lilikoi, strawberry x2, tangerine, red bean, apple, and pear. They gave us two extra strawberry mochis, which were our favorites! My least favorite was the tangerine. The tangerine tasted good on its own but it tasted like an odd combination with the mochi. Service 5/5 Super nice and friendly folks. Ambiance 5/5 Small inside with a waiting bench. There are two lines outside for walk-ins and phone orders. I've had mochi from many different places in San Francisco, Little Tokyo in LA, and Japan and this lives up to the hype.
We made an unscheduled day trip to Hilo. That meant a trip to buy strawberry mochi. Unlike my previous visit I didn't order in advance. That resulted in standing in the walk up line versus the phone order line that takes precedence. It's somewhat haphazard. We were there around 2pm on a Saturday. Just as you think you're getting closer to the entrance, folks with phone orders who just arrived will enter the store ahead of you. Then more waiting. Finally I get into the store and ordered six strawberry mochi. I paid for it not thinking about the price. Gave my name. Then waited outside as they've got to box my order. When my name is called I go back in and I'm handed the box. So heavy I'm thinking. It wasn't until we got back to our resort in Waikoloa and open the box. I got 12 strawberry mochi. No wonder the box was heavy and it was $23.56. The lesson here - place a phone order.
Call in you order at least a day in advance or you will be waiting in line like you are waiting for a Disneyland ride. There's a separate pickup line for phone orders. I love their fresh strawberry mochi and if you are going to get it, please order either a 6 or 12 pack. This way the mochi menehunes in the back will fill your box completely up. I ordered a 6 pack but got a total of 10 strawberry mochis at no extra charge. I also love the seasonal choices and this time I tried the pumpkin pie filled mochi. I don't know how they do it but they wrapped mochi around a slab of pumpkin pie that included the crust. I have been never disappointed by the other fresh fruit items. Two Ladies Kitchen is a grab and go place with only street parking. The staff is kind and they sounded really sorry when they ran out of an item that was in my phone order. Leaving my phone number, they were able to call me before I got there and I requested others items to replace the ones they didn't have anymore. When in Hilo, this is a guarantee stop. #bigboyproblems
Always good! They're having a hard time keeping with demand and it's fresh so expect a wait but it's worth it. I'm putting this part out here so others aren't surprised. We got there at opening-10 a.m. it's hard to see the specials list because it's inside and people are usually standing in front of it. They have containers of ready made assortments on the counter to choose from you can grab and go. Or, you place your order and wait we opted to come back 2 hours later. Tried calling in to add to our order but they were no longer taking phone orders for the day. The line was long like 45 minutes but they moved pretty fast once you get in. By the way, the picture of the little assorted mochi ball I have, it's a perfect snack for the car ride and beyond.
We heard about this place from a YouTuber and decided to give it a try. Be prepared for a long line, as it seems to be a very popular spot. The mochi was soft, fresh, and came in some unique flavors that we enjoyed. It's definitely worth trying at least once for the experience and novelty. That said, after waiting in line, we're not sure it completely lived up to the hype. Overall, the mochi was good and we enjoyed it, but whether it's worth the wait may depend on how much time you have. If you're curious and it's your first visit, it's a fun stop, but expect a line.
We tried coming around noon on a weekday but the line was long and we thought maybe we wouldn't be able to get the flavors we wanted so decided to call to place an order to pick up the following day. We came at 10:30am which was the pickup time we asked for and waited about 20 minutes in the phone order line before being called into the store and waited a few more minutes and left with our order around 11. They did give samples in line though, so that was nice. I did wish I knew about the additional daily fresh fruit flavors beforehand though so that I could order those when I called! I didn't see it until I came to pick up. The place is small and only enough room for a few people at a time. The strawberry mochi is amazing! Other flavors are good too, so soft and fresh. I think it's worth going if you like mochi and have the time!
Has an assortment of mochi--oreo, tsumami, daifuku and strawberry. After opening them, I found they were kind enough to throw in another strawberry on the house! Mahalo! The mochi were super soft and squishy. The strawberry was a standout as you could taste the juiciness of the fruit coupled with the sweetness of the red bean. The Oreo was also a fave! Can't go wrong with milk's favorite cookie. Didn't have to wait too long either despite the fruit mochi being made to order. Would come back 10/10!
We came to Two Ladies Kitchen based on the high reviews, but this ended up being one of the worst experiences we had on the Big Island. We arrived 15 minutes before opening and were first in the walk-in line. Right before opening, an employee came out and split the lines into "walk-in" and "phone order." Totally fine--except once they opened, they let all phone orders go first... and then continued calling more phone orders again while the walk-in line just stood there. Despite being first in the walk-in line, we waited over 45 minutes before they even started letting walk-ins inside. Meanwhile, we watched people leave the walk-in line, place phone orders, and get served ahead of us. The system is extremely frustrating and poorly managed. A better system would be alternating one customer from each line ! So ridiculous they can't figure this out . Once inside, it took another 20 minutes to get our order. To make matters worse, the order was incorrect and nothing was labeled, so we had no idea what we were eating. The mochi itself was also disappointing. The texture was unusually thick and had a strange, almost metallic taste. The strawberry was very sour, and the strawberry cake mochi was overly large, soggy, and honestly inedible. Overall, we wasted over an hour and a half here for a very underwhelming experience. The staff also weren't particularly welcoming or helpful. The two stars are for Hawaii's aloha spirit....otherwise, this would be a zero!
Such a cute little shop producing the most delicious mochi desserts! We got a couple of mixed boxes and the strawberry and strawberry cheesecake fresh mochi. While we were waiting for our order one of the staff came out with apple lihing and grape mochi to try so now we have to come back for those! Service is quick and friendly always. One of our favorite stops on Hilo!
We came on a Saturday afternoon and there was a huge line at the door. However, we made a phone order a day before and that line had no wait. I wasn't really impressed with the mochi considering all the hype it's received online. I thought some of the mochis were way too big (ex: strawberry and strawberry shortcake) and the oreo and brownie just didn't taste right as a mochi flavor. In addition, I felt like all the mochis' skin was too thick/dense. The Lilikoi and Chichi were the only ones I found decent tasting. Personally, I've had better mochi elsewhere. Definitely place a phone order (it'll probably save you over an hour wait outside).
A must go if you find yourself in Hilo. I came here 5 years ago and have been dreaming about it since. I'm so glad I got to go this time around. I called a day ahead for my order of 24 strawberry mochi and 6 strawberry shortcake mochi. All which only was $120! I flew the mochis back to Honolulu and was surprised to see extra mochis in my boxes! For a total of 40 strawberry mochis! Their strawberry mochis are so soft and pair beautifully with the azuki bean and fresh strawberry. The strawberry shortcake mochi is HUGE and is the perfect sweetness. We decided to try some of their other fresh fruits. We got the green grape, pear, and li hing apple. The grape was good with azuki beans and had a nice crunch to it. The pear was a no go me, it was hard and not sweet. Li hing apple had a slice of apple and the mochi was dusted with li hing powder. It was good but the first bite was super sour! In my opinion their best product is the fresh strawberry mochi and strawberry shortcake. The workers here are so nice and even give our samples while you wait. I will be back! Also for those of you ordering to bring back to other islands, make sure you pick up your order on the day you leave to make sure they are as fresh as possible
Finally got to try Two Ladies Kitchen and they didn't disappoint... there's definitely a reason people line up to buy! I knew there might be a line so I planned ahead and placed a phone order. There's a separate line of phone orders too which was really nice. But if you wait in line they do come out with samples - just saying. Also they have pre-packaged mochi packs - which make great gifts. I bought a bunch of mochi to take home to mainland (I froze it after buying) and took it to my parents house where we cut 10 pieces into 3 pieces to do a mochi tasting. Honestly all of them were great, but top 3 were: - shiso - I didn't know what to expect, but the flavors works so well together. Such a unique combo, with subtle shiso flavor! Highly recommend. - kamato - I didn't know if I'd like it so only got one piece.. after trying I wish I had more. - peach - this is my perfect mochi. The white filling just works and it's not too sweet. I know the strawberry is their #1 seller so I tried it and it's really good, it was maybe my 5th favorite of the mochis tried. All in all a great mochi shop that's I'll definitely visit again! read more
Never have I ever tried mochi with a fresh fruit filled center so if you haven't either, then Two Ladies Kitchen is a must stop if you're visiting Hilo. The mochi is made fresh daily, and it's highly encouraged to place an advance phone order prior to pickup so the shop can manage the high demand. The space at the front counter is very limited, so expect a wait outside to order and/or pickup. Their fruits menu changes seasonally, so we just had to try 1 of each item: - Strawberry - Mandarin Orange - D'anjou Pear - Bing Cherry - Green Grape - Cotton Candy Grape - Nectarine - Strawberry Short Cake We also had to order their Peach and Lilikoi flavors. FOOD - Strawberry mochi: 5/5 - Chichi: 4/5 - Lillikoi: 4/5 - Butter mochi: 5/5 - Brownie: 4/5 - Peanut Butter: 4/5 SERVICE: The line can be long here but I lucked out. There was person waiting for their order and another person in front of me. Considering everything is already made (or at least I assume so) and just needs to be boxed up, it took awhile to get my order together. I waited 15 minutes or so. FINAL THOUGHTS: I would come back. Picked up the 8-piece assorted mochi pack and baby mochi from Two Ladies Kitchen in Hilo. The assorted flavors were beautifully arranged--bottom row (left to right): lilikoi, butterfly, kamato, tsumami; top row: plum flower, marshmallow, peach, butter. Each mochi was soft with generous filling, and the baby mochi were bite-sized pieces filled with chocolate--simple but satisfying. I've been coming here for years, and while the quality is still solid, I've noticed some inconsistency lately. Sometimes the mochi isn't quite as soft as it used to be. Also, the strawberry mochi has changed--strawberries have gotten noticeably smaller, and unlike before, they no longer substitute two small ones for one big one. The last couple of times, the smaller mochi still counted as a single piece, which felt like a downgrade. For now, I've been sticking to the regular assorted mochi, which still delivers on flavor and texture most of the time. Maybe next visit to Hilo, I'll give the strawberry mochi another try and see if it's improved. I can't recommend this place enough. If you're in Hilo, you have to make a stop. You can order à la carte, with each piece made fresh to order (resulting in a bit of a wait), or grab a pre-made assorted box if you're short on time. The shop is small so you wait outside. Don't let the line outside discourage you because it's totally worth it. You can also order ahead. As for the mochi is incredibly fresh, soft, and perfectly bouncy. The fillings are all great, especially the fresh fruit options--definitely get the strawberry mochi. The staff was super friendly and clearly passionate about their craft. read more
My friends and I based our itinerary around the Two Ladies schedule and it was definitely worth getting to Hilo before 4pm to get our hands on their mochi. I really wish they were open more days of the week, especially on Sundays. We called in our order earlier that week, which saved us a lot of time. The regular line was soooo long, and while there was still a line in the phone order line, it was significantly shorter. I got the Oreo, brownie, li hing apple, strawberry daifuku, and grape. The brownie and strawberry daifuku are my go-to's. The li hing apple was probably my favorite, but I think it's a limited time flavor, which is such a bummer. I would have never thought to put li hing on my mochi, but the salty sweet combo was perfection! Definitely recommend trying whatever fresh fruit mochi they are offering at the time. All of their mochis have such a good texture. read more
The mochi is top notch. Soft fluffy with a soft chew. Their whole fresh strawberry mochi with a little sweet bean, is my favorite. I tried the Li Hing Mui fresh Green Apple. Mochi was on point, but too much Li Hing Mui for my taste. I heard the Poha Berry is good, but they did not have any that day. I have tried their variation on non-fruit mochi & they were all good, but I really liked their Okinawain Sweet Potato. Note: You cannot take fresh mochi on plane in your carr ʻ-on or in your luggage. The store also has a sign stating this. The airport will confiscate it if found. Check their store hours because they sometimes change. The store front is small, they make their mochi fresh thoughtout the day and there is always a line waiting to order & waiting for their orders to be ready. Call in your order ahead of time is the best so you do not have to wait. The best time to stop by w/o pre-ordering is right when they open or 30 mins before they close at 4:00 PM. There is only street parking and it is located in a very busy area and hard to find parking. There is a small shopping area across the street with parking lot. read more

Love coming here when I visit Hilo!!! I will preface with- you should place a phone order or go early if there is something specific that you want, they are very busy and can sell out quickly. The mochi is freshly made & super soft/chewy, all the fillings and options are amazing. The strawberry mochi is my favorite, the strawberry is fresh & quite large. I also like the assorted candied mochi- its small with chocolate candies inside & great so share with others. read more

We've read about this place in many Big Island guides, so it was a must stop when visiting the Hilo side of the island. I must say, these are probably the best mochi balls I've had in my life. Every flavor came to life with every bite. It's very tight inside without any place to sit so be prepared to queue outside if the line is long. You can call in ahead to avoid the crowds. This is definitely one of the must visit spots on the Big Island. Even if you're on the Kailua Kona side. read more
Don't let the long line outside discourage you. Most people wait because they customize their orders. We just grabbed their prepackaged combo packs and left within 10 minutes. It was best mochi we ever had so it's worth the wait. So fresh and so delicious without being overly sweet. On a side note, KTA grocery stores carry their mochi combo packs (6 in each pack) for $10, so if you want to try some, just grab some there. Highly recommend!! read more

We came 30 minutes before closing and waited in line for about 15 minutes. The staff were super friendly, helpful and patient with us as we decided what to order. The inside of this place is small and only has a bench to sit on while you wait for your order. While we waited they gave us free samples. Definitely a must try if you are in Hilo! Haven't mochi like this back in the Bay Area- so the mochi is definitely worth the try! My favorites were the butter mochi, chichi, strawberry cheesecake, and butterfly. read more

12 hours in Hilo: Stop #5 Two Ladies Kitchen. My family had to get some of the world-famous strawberry mochi from this old-time Hilo institution. Located in a small shop on Kilauea Ave across from the Ben Franklin Craft store, one of my cousins pre-ordered before we got there. Glad we did. When we got there at the scheduled time, there were two lines that snaked out of the shop. One was for walk up orders, the other for phone orders. That one was a lot shorter and went a lot faster. Soon everyone was back in the car and on our way. Later on looking at the famous strawberry mochi, it's evident that they no longer use the giant strawberries. Shrink-flation, I guess. Still bigger than normal strawberries, and the taste was still there. Need to try their other mochis, fruit-flavored or otherwise. Glad to see an old-time mochi shop still continuing on! #supportlocal! Repeat and recommend! read more

Made it before they closed at 4pm and still was able to get 8 strawberry mochi that typically in the past you have to order ahead to get them. Not to be missed when in Hilo and worth the drive there. I just can't find fresh mochi and manju like this back home in Seattle. If you get the fresh fruit mochi, remember they need to be refrigerated and are not allowed back to the mainland. So order what you will be able to eat there. They take credit cards now too! read more

I was in Hilo this past week celebrating my sister's bachelorette. I found Two Ladies Kitchen while I was doing some research on TikTok on places you must visit when you're in Hilo. I'm so glad I added this store as one of our stops for the trip. We were spending the morning at the farmers market and this store isn't too far away so we decided to walk over once we were done shopping. We got lucky and the line wasn't extremely long. It is a small shop which explains the long lines. They have a separate line for mobile orders. The kind workers also offer free samples which I love because I honestly didn't know what to order since everything sounded delicious. I definitely recommend getting the mochis with fresh fruit! Just as advertised the long waits for mochi everything. I decide to take a chance on it knowing the line maybe long and it was especially for the fruit filled mochi. Parking is only along the street. Even if you preorder you most likely will still be waiting for a bit depending on the line. It is a small shop with a line to get in as the shop can only hold about 4 or 5 people at a time and even that is a tight squeeze. If you're a tourist remember you can't bring home fresh fruit so just enjoy it! Prices are per item so you can customize your order to whatever you prefer. There are so many options for their mochi. It is recommended to call ahead and pick a pick up time. The mochi was delicious, fresh, and filled with many different possibilities. My family and I loved the mochi that was filled with real strawberry, the peanut butter mochi, in the tsunami. You could also walk up and order, but be prepared to wait. You could also walk up and pay for their pre-package mochi already. Be also aware that if you lineup for the walk up line, you could walk inside and pay then wait outside. It is a small shop with just a small bench inside, no seating so must order it Togo. Walked in and ordered 6 mochi and they gave me an extra. I waited in a short line to order then had to wait a while for them to get the order ready. I ordered plum, Okinawan sweet potato, butterfly, peach mama, strawberry, lilikoi. They were really big and soft. The best one was strawberry which had a fresh strawberry inside. I think if you want to skip the line and wait you can call and pre-order. read more

I believe you can preorder for pickup. When I was there, I saw some packaged mochi probably for pickup.

You can call in and place your order to pick up. However, you can't order and have them ship to you.
Going back to Honolulu on a Monday. They're closed on Sunday and Monday. If I pick up on Saturday (including strawberry ones) would it keep until Monday in the fridge?
Their Mochi stays nicely in fridge but 3 days is probably the limit. It will also not be optimal taste and texture. Caution if fruit might go moldy. The chichi dango will be hard. I suppose those you can nuke for a couple seconds to refresh?

They are closed on Sunday and Monday. Open 10AM - 4PM Tuesday to Saturday. You can order online and pick up in store.

The rice flour is gluten free, but some of the fillings have dairy and/or egg. As far as I know, the fruit filled ones are gluten free, dairy free and egg free.
Can I bring strawberry mochi back to Oahu via carry on with Southwest (looks like I have to clear agriculture)?
Not on southwest! I just came back home to O'ahu via SWA and had to put my strawberry mochi in my checked bag because SWA lands on the international side. Hawaiian Airlines can without a problem though!
