I always forget that this place isn't great and end up coming here out of convenience, and I'm disappointed every time. The rice isn't soft. The prices are a bit too high. I got a mini bento today which is a mix of assorted sushi. it took all of a minute for it to be ready which tells me that it's probably not fresh. I do like their hand rolls though. Those are generally better than anything else I've eaten here since I know they come out fresh, but they are pricey. Overall, the quality isn't really worth the price you pay here. always been a fave of mine for years since i've worked in manoa marketplace. the decor inside is simple, yet comforting. a good amount of indoor seating if you wish, but also the marketplace has some seating outdoors. i would advise to call in your order if you're in a rush. the crunch don is bomb af & the shrimp tempura maki is so good- both are my go to when i need a seafood fix. i've also met one of the owners and she's such a sweet woman! definitely love supporting this business whenever i'm in the area during lunch hours. ps. they are closed on sundays read more

Just moved to manoa from another area in town, but never explored the places in manoa marketplace yet. This place is really good. But you need to know what to order and what not to. Haha. Once you figure it out, its really good. Lots of places like that in Hawaii. Also, 15$minimum for using cc. So bring cash! Or get atms around too. I have to say some of their items are EXPENSIVE., I mean sushi is always pricey but the ikura chirashi I ordered seemed more pricey than usual. The proportion was pretty unique... It had ikura, tamago, ahi, octopus, cucumber, and daikon, layered over rice. While it was delicious I had to question the amount I paid for those items when it wasn't necessarily good quality fish or seafood items, especially with the cucumber and daikon in the bowl. While the bowl itself was quite tasty they do only accept cash and the employees or owners (couldn't tell which they were) didn't seem very friendly or helpful. You can sit down and eat but the ambience of the location isn't very inviting nor does it seem like the employees/owners want you to sit down, which is probably why I took my food to go. read more

Went to Manoa Sushi the other day to grab a quick bite. The price of each item was overpriced. Can get same amount and better quality at other places. There was no taste in the food. Plus they cheated me out of my money. They charged me for an item I did not order. When I mentioned the mistake asked them to get reimbursed they did not want to reimburse me for it and they said was a typo. Then they started to speak in korean acting like they didn't know what was going on. However, they should of reimbursed me for the typo. My review is only for their boba/bubble drink. I havent tried their sushi yet so dont base that on this review. I ordered their melon boba and there are 2 things wrong with it: 1) It looks blended but its not (which doesnt really bother me) 2) THERE ISNT ANY BOBA!!! Im more than half way through my drink and I havent had a single one suck up my straw. Seriously disappointing. I can see that there are boba floating around and Ive tried aiming my straw at them but Im about ready to give up... and its no fun using a spoon. I was going to only give them 1 star but as I was leaving I noticed that they had homemade recycling bins (one for plastic and one for cans) so I had to add another star. ---- UPDATE ----- 2 seconds after I posted my review, 3 boba jumped up in my draw. Had three things here the other day--the Gyoza (6 gyoza for $4.09), the Spicy Ahi Ebiko Nigiri (3 pieces for $3.69), and the California with Unagi Roll ($3.49). Gyoza were small but came out hot. The skin was a little weird though--there was spots that seemed uncooked so I didn't eat those parts. Spicy Ahi Ebiko Nigiri was pretty good--definitely lived up to the "spicy" in its name! The ahi wasn't exactly fresh but this isn't a five-star sushi bar so yeah... California with Unagi Roll was strange. It came uncut but was too bulky to be eaten daintily like a hand roll so I was not exactly pleased. Rice in it isn't the rice that sushi is typically made with so texture was off. You know how Japanese food usually gives you the feeling that the chef made it with care and love? Yeah, well, that feeling was sorely lacking with this roll. Did they have an inexperienced intern make this?! Overall, this place is alright. It's not at the top of my list but I wouldn't mind coming back to try some of their other items. read more

Today I ordered and when the food came with no water I asked for it and was told "we don't do water anymore". Since I've been spending a lot of time studying at UH Manoa this semester I've been frequenting Manoa marketplace a lot. Tonight I stopped by Manoa sushi. When I walked in, I was pleasantly greeted by the girl behind the counter. She was nice and seemed happy to work there. That was a good sign. There were also a couple of kids who ordered before me that she knew the names to. So far so good... til I got to UH Manoa and sat down to eat my food. I got a spicy tuny hand roll and a california roll. I wasnt that hungry but I wanted variety. The spicy tuna roll was good. It wasnt dry and had a lot of flavor. The california roll tho.. I was surprised to see the crab meat still intact. Usually they chop it up and mix it with mayo and other stuff but not this one. Though the portions are big, a lot of it is due to the rice. Lots of rice and unfortunately this one was dry :( It come with 8 pieces and after the 2nd one I had lost my appetite. I didnt want to waste it so I deconstructed it and just ate the insides. My wife went in yesterday to order lunch for her working place gang, we have spent literally hundredths of dollars supporting this company (with our referrals, its thousands), however, yesterday will definitely be our last time ever!!! Read on, so you, "Hawaii people, especially Manoa people", can take your business to somewhere that you will be appreciated as a valuable & true customer!!! My wife arrived yesterday when there were no customers & ordered 9 bento take-outs, didn't think this would be a problem, more an appreciation from the owner, remember, no line, no customers, the owner/chef was upset that this order of 9, wasn't called in. He relayed this message, not personally but cowardly via his employee (who was very apologetic & not even her company). What? No customers & you are willing to turn away customers because its not a single order & not called in? My wife told that to the employee loud enough so the owner would hear, did he come out to relay this himself or explain that maybe next time, please call your order in, "NO". What business turns away customers? Answer, a business who don't want customers, or working at their convenience. Is there a sign posted outside that says this is a call in order sushi shop only? No! Maybe there should be a sign, because if you walk in and the owner doesn't feel like preparing and serving more than your group of two or more (why are there tables & chairs inside the store?), guess what, you will not feel welcomed, "absolutely no Aloha". Food prepared by grumpy, unappreciated chef's will taste exactly tasteless!! Manoa Sushi has the freshest tasting sushi for a take out place that I've tried. I really like the fact that their sushi rice isn't strong like other places since I'm not a huge fan of rice vinegar. Their bento with shrimp tempura and their spicy ahi are very tasty. Whenever I go in, I feel so welcome, like I'm family there. The young lady who helped me with my order was very friendly and greeted me warmly with a smile. I would recommend this establishment if you want a homey feel served with great sushi. I was looking for a place to grab lunch to bring to my Aunty's house. I walked through Manoa Marketplace and it was pretty crowded. There were a bunch of us so I figured sushi would be the easiest since I could get a variety of things. I thought to myself... it must be my lucky day because there was no line and I didn't have to wait. There was a reason this was the only place with no customers... their sushi (if that's what you call it) was hands down, the worst we've ever had. su·shi sooSHē/ noun a Japanese dish consisting of small balls or rolls of vinegar-flavored cold cooked rice served with a garnish of raw fish, vegetables, or egg. First off, these rolls were so small I would categorize them as tekka maki. Not to mention, they were rolled so loosely that when picked up, all the filing fell out. Second, they used plain rice... not a drop of vinegar seasoning! We had to use all the shoyu packets, and then some. Third, their spicy tuna was bits of ahi drenched with sriracha sauce. It was pretty painful to eat! And lastly, they aren't cheap. Sad to say, you can get much better sushi at 7-11 for a price you won't kick yourself for later. read more

At first glance, the fake sushi in the front window and the pics inside do not do the food justice. I had the Spicy Ahi roll - it's spicy! But it is gooooood. I also had the roll with Eel (unagi) and avocado (can't remember the exact name). It also was good. The portions for the rolls are BIG - not those little bite-size pieces. I could only eat half of each roll (saved the rest for next day's lunch). The place lacks any ambiance - just white walls and ceiling, save for the pics on one wall. And I don't like that it's cash only. If I'm dropping $20+ on food, I want my airline miles too. All in all, I'll go here again, and often. RUDE! I would rate ZERO STARS if i could just because of the service. My friends always tell me to come here to get the Crunch Don so I came here to try it. When I entered and looked at the menu, I felt intimidated like she was trying to rush me to order. I got the Crunch Don and it was good, but the service here is rude. So I usually get "to go" instead of dine-in because I don't always finish my food and I like to bring it home. But I was really hungry and wanted to eat outside, but it was really cold yesterday. So I sat down inside and started to eat. Right after a few bites, the woman who took my order came over and took my plastic bag and soy sauce! Without even saying anything. I was so taken aback I just looked at her and I guess she caught it so she offered water. It wasn't even a full cup. I was so stunned I almost just left but I was really hungry so I ate a little and then asked for the plastic bag back and left. Just because I was eating in, I wasted their money of a packet of soy sauce and plastic bag? I just paid TEN DOLLARS for a sushi bowl. Right after she took it she went to the back and the man she worked with started talking really loud but I couldn't understand. Ate here for the first time, not impressed. The sushi was "a-ok." it wasn't junk but nothing special either and their refrigerator where they keep their drinks either wasn't working to good or they just put the drinks in cause my iced tea was too iced. They make up for the lack of "wow factor" by having wide variety of choices. if you aren't in the mood for sushi they have bentos, tempura (shrimp, veggies and I think both). Also a chicken katsu, like most of the places in the Manoa Shopping Center, Manoa sushi is family run and because of that and the fact that they sell other stuff besides sushi, I'm willing to give them a second and if need me a third chance to redeem. Manoa Sushi is okay. Empty when I arrived at 12 noon, but that doesn't make a restaurant bad. Some rubbish on floor (nothing major or disgusting), 1 staff in front behind desk. Was greeted, no complaints there. Ordered the Ikura Chirashi, and it was a littttle pricey, but it's a variety bowl with a lot of fish, so I expected so. Order came out promptly, and I dined it. Now for the food part. The bowl comes with a variety of fish, served over rice with furikake and some cucumber and takuan diced on the side of the fish in the bowl. Here's the slice by slice: Ahi tasted old, not very fresh. Tamago was cold, but sweet like it should be, not too bad. Tako was good. Unagi was very teriyaki, but not very "unagi" as I would have liked it; kinda tasted like generic Teri anything). Salmon was very fresh, 10/10 slice of fish. Shrimp was not as fresh, it was eh. Takuan and Cucumber tasted good but could have as more. And the furikake was kind of clumped instead of sprinkled. Overall, it was okay. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but I may consider coming here again if I really crave sushi and am in the area. read more

I've eaten at other cheap sushi places like Sumo, Kozo, and Aloha, so I feel like my expectations are appropriate, but this is one of the worst sushi places I've ever eaten at. They avoid 1 star because at least the raw fish hasn't made me sick. I love sushi and work nearby, so every couple of months, the craving will be strong enough for me to try them again and every time I am disappointed. Their fish generally tastes very watery and bland. When I know the fish quality is terrible, I go for things like spicy tuna where the taste of the fish can usually be drowned out by the sauce.
