Every single time I visit Manoa Sushi, I ALWAYS get the Dynamite Maki. And every time I eat it, I always have an ethereal out of body experience. The Dynamite Maki is basically a tempura roll with cucumbers and topped with spicy ahi. It may sound simple but the shrimp tempura IS ALWAYS FRESH. So when you're eating it, you are met with the most satisfying crunch and burst of tempura and spicy ahi flavor. It's such a refreshing roll and my monthly guilty pleasure. If there was one food in the world I'd marry it's this roll right here. What you're looking at is perfection and beauty. The service is also always impeccable as well. Food is of a decent quality. The crunch don is what usually go for and for $15, it's quite small, but at least it's fresh. Service is ok. Friendly faces overall. But they do let you know in a passive way that they aren't happy with it if you choose not to tip (as it's a takeout place). Aka- face drops when you hit no tip, lol. Tipping is customary and dependent on service. I don't tip if there's no sit down service period. If you make me a coffee or go above and beyond, absolutely. But don't expect that as a must. Cubed ahi bowls are an acquired taste, but I have no complaints about the quality of the seafood. I do think their bowls are a better deal than the hand rolls in terms of quantity, but everything is well made and their menu is sizable. They are fast and easy to dine in or take out. read more

It seems like they had some renovations because the interior is really nice and there are quite a few tables to sit at, but it smells kinda funny inside. If it's a nice day, it might be nice to sit outside. I ordered the crunch don, which I guess is kinda what they're known for. My first bite was great. The veggie tempura is cut into bite sized pieces. It was very crunchy and there was a delicious sauce drizzled on it. There was quite a lot of spicy ahi on top, but the texture was kinda weird, like I was questioning if it really was ahi. It was probably frozen, but I've had previously frozen ahi that doesn't taste quite like what I had at Manoa sushi. The service was pleasant and they made my order quickly. They have a credit card minimum like a lot of mom and pop places. I think I'd come back to get something other than poke. I wonder if they do a crunch don without the poke..... prices for bowls and rolls seem normal compared to other places. Everything is expensive nowadays. As someone that loves sushi, I don't recommend. We ordered 2 spicy ahi handrolls (along with other handrolls) and the ahi was not only pre-frozen, but the texture was TOUGH and color was not appealing. We took 1 bite and didn't even continue eating it, including the 2nd ahi hand roll. What a waste:( Tho it's my fault as I should've asked beforehand if it was fresh or pre-frozen. I've been told that their Crunch Bowls are SUPER good, but it's not what I expected. ***What I ordered **Crunch Don ~ (5/10) The spicy ahi sits on top of a vegetable pancake. The pancake was a little soggy and the fish quality wasn't the best. Although, this isn't bad for a quick on the go food! Honestly, I'm glad that the rice wasn't dry either! My husband ordered sushi from here forgetting that I told him it's expensive and not worth what you get. I had to throw away a bunch of sushi that he ordered yesterday because the rice was old and hard and the fish was not worth eating. We've passed by Manoa Sushi numerous times on our many visits to Manoa Marketplace. We're usually there fairly early - to go shopping at the Farmer's Market or to pick up some breakfasty things at Brug or Fendu, and Manoa Sushi isn't typically open at that time. So, the other day, as lunch time approached and our daughters were craving sushi, we figured we'd head there to give them a try (instead of going to one of our standard sushi stops). We ordered: tamago, inari, crunch don, and veg tempura curry. Tamago and inari are pretty basic, so it's hard to mess those up in my opinion. Although, having said that, our girls are tamago snobs and have the criticized the taste of the tamago from some other places. Happy to say that Manoa Sushi's tamago satisfied their discerning palates. The other items were so-so. The veg tempura in the crunch don and veg tempura curry were a little bland. So was the poke on the crunch don. The flavor on the curry was ok. Not the best we've had, but also not the worst. Shop was very clean. Service was very pleasant, especially since communicating through masks and broken English (them, not me) can be challenging. Food was ready quickly. Since we were getting take out, they put the curry in a separate container - instead of pouring it on the tempura and having it get soggy. Wasn't expecting that. Very thoughtful. Oddly, there's a $ minimum to pay with a credit card. Really? COVID protocols - Masks for customers and staff. No indoor seating/dining. Take-out only. Support local businesses! read more

Stopped by to pick up sushi for lunch. Ordered the rainbow maki, a California hand roll and a spicy vegetable hand roll. The rainbow maki was definitely a mouthful. The rice was bland. No sushi rice flavor that I like. The hand rolls were better, and I enjoyed the spicy vegetable roll overall. Service was good and there are seats and tables for indoor eating. . Love love love this place especially for their crunch don. If you can't handle heat, stay away from their spicy ahi because it packs a punch (keep a glass of water nearby). Their prices are pretty high but you get what you pay for and it satisfies all your sushi cravings. It's hit or miss here. The prices are rather high, and to pay by credit card, the total has to be at least $10 or $15. Quality of the sushi rolls is not bad, though. I haven't been able to find a decent spicy veggie roll, and I don't mind too much paying $3.29 (or so) for one. Except the one time I went on Sunday and they ran out of avocado. Went back on Monday evening and bought one to go, because they were very clearly put out that I came in at 6:40pm, supposed to close at 6:50pm). There was a sign on all the tables- not allowed to dine in after 6:30pm. Hmmm. My handroll was done in record time, like 2 minutes, if even, and as soon as I stepped out at 6:45pm, they closed shop. It's strange because during the daytime, the cashiers are always friendly and helpful. Anyway I got home and saw that my handroll sort of shrunk. The ikura chiraishi bowl is not as good as it looks. The ika tasted fishy. The slices were so thin. The tamago slice was so thin that it fell apart. The rice was not flavorful enough. Came here on a whim when I was in the Manoa area with my friend. I always come to Manoa Marketplace, but have never thought to try out Manoa Sushi! Bottom line: the spicy ahi bowl I had wasn't anything that blew me away, but it is still a great option if you're in the area! Food: I got a classic spicy ahi bowl which I think is always a great judge of a poke place. The spicy ahi was chopped into pretty small cubes (I normally like larger pieces of fish) and coated with a classic spicy ahi sauce. The poke was served on a bed of sushi rice and cucumbers and takuan on the side - added a fresh crunch! Service/Ambiance/Price: It is a takeout stop, super casual. No indoor seating due to COVID. I would recommend ordering on the phone if you're in a rush because there were at least 3 others waiting for their order when we got there. Price is pretty on par with other poke bowl spots. My boyfriend and I heard of this place from his friends. We were in the area getting crepes and decided to grab a crunch don from Manoa Sushi since we were extra hungry. There was no dine-in option due to COVID so the restaurant itself was very empty. Just a couple of fridges and the front cashier area with the kitchen hidden in the back. Very clean. We ordered a crunch don and I was disappointed that they didn't take Discover. They also have a $10 minimum fee for credit and debit cards, which was a bit high considering all the other places with a minimum charge that I've been to has the minimum at $5. I had to walk back to my car to get a different card but thankfully, they completed the order in the meantime. I appreciated that they trusted my pending payment and had the food ready to go before I got there. The food came in a bowl with tight plastic wrapping. The vegetable tempura included in the crunch don was crispy and pretty good. However, the spicy ahi wasn't my favorite. While it was spicy for sure, I feel like it lacked flavor. It didn't feel like I was eating spicy ahi. I couldn't taste the actual ahi or the seasoning. All I tasted was spicy. It wasn't overly spicy either, it was quite comparable to any other spicy ahi in terms of spice level. This crunch bowl costed $11.01 after tax, which I thought was on the pricier end but that could be because it included vegetable tempura. Unfortunately this place will not be my go-to. read more

This place is such a hidden gem! The food came out quickly and the staff was friendly. We ordered the salmon nigiri, spicy ahi don, and crunch don. The salmon nigiri comes with 3 pieces. The salmon itself was good but I didn't like the rice to salmon ratio. That was the only issue I had for this place, everything else was great. It was a lot of rice for the slice of salmon that was on top of it. The spicy ahi bowl is always a go to and if you like spicy you'll love this bowl! The spice level is just right. It comes with cucumbers and takuan (yellow radish). I ordered the crunch don. This was ALWAYS my favorite. It's vegetable tempura and spicy ahi on top of rice. You need to try this! Coming in on a Wednesday afternoon, I was ready to eat some good poke. My friend recommended me this poke spot and told me to not look at their yelp rating since he knows I love to check yelp before going to a place! Well I got their crunch don and my first thought was eh it doesn't look too appealing. However, the tempura they put inside is a great addition to the bowl. I really wish they put more fish inside it seems like a small scoop which isn't enough! The taste of the bowl is really good and I truly believe this place deserves more stars than it has. ended up at manoa marketplace while trying to figure out what to eat for lunch. wanted something "fresher", so decided on sushi. ended up getting the katsu spicy combo since it looked good on the menu. came out to just over $10 for the little bento. it was cute. but on the smaller side. barely over 100g of katsu, which reminded me of a mochiko breading instead of a more traditional crispy flaky crunchy panko style. chicken meat looked really tiny and slim on the inside, but at least it had good flavor. the side of spicy ahi had a good spice to it, though also very small. barely over 1oz of poke. came on a big bed of rice with furikake and 2 takuan. overall a very cute bento, and very reminiscent of more traditional japanese style as far as presentation and portions go. read more

Tried this spot on a recommendation to try their crunch don to compare against Sushi Man Hawaii Kai which I love. Called ahead and was aware of the $15 cc minimum which is ridiculous in this day and age. Walking in on a Saturday at 1230 expected at least a line but no one was there and the cashier looked bored. Upon getting home 20 minutes later opened the container to a much smaller crunch don then I'm used to. Spicy ahi on top lacked flavor and wasn't even remotely spicy. Vegetable tempura was decent but tasted greasy. Rice was okay, nothing special. Overall it wasn't terrible but I wouldn't go back nor would I recommend it. There's better sushi elsewhere. read more
