There is nothing I can say that everyone else hasn't. The oldest Japanese restaurant in Seattle. So many quirks and charm to this place. The owner was even there when we were leaving saying bye to everyone. Service is great. The staff is so nice and it was still so busy while they were closing up. My friends and I order a few plates to share before roaming the streets haha. We got a sashimi salad, black cod, calamari cooked in butter and the sassy roll? Everything was sooo good. We were pretty full by the end of dinner which was surprising since we all thought under estimate the serving size haha.

I walked in and sat at the bar, this place is pretty small so make a reservation since there's only a few walk in bar seats. I got a Variety ozen, it came with miso soup, nigiri plate, chicken & rice, cucumber salad, sesame salad & tempura assortment for $33. Everything was delicious, I like how I got to try a bunch of different dishes in one order.

My throat was feeling a little sore so I ordered a little bit on the blender side. Overall, a good comfort Japanese meal. Everything was decent. Ordered the tofu agedashi, beef sukiyaki set (they let me sample the broth before given my throat, so nice) and the beef was thin and tender, miso black cod (good but not outstanding), and the roasted rice ball (takes 20 mins to make so came at end of meal).

Torn between rounding a 3.5 for this historic Seattle restaurant, but ultimately leaning towards down because of service. Food was excellent, price is slightly on the steeper side but food quality is also high. We arrived at 6 sharp as a walk-in and were told they could seat us if we finish by 7:30 for a reservation. That's a good amount of time, no worry there. The entire time we dined we were reminded about the time and how we had to hurry up. As soon as we sat, we were introduced to the menu which was great, but then told to put in certain orders now because of "that 7:30 reservation." Throughout the dining experience when we were checked on or given food, they'd allude to the time. We finished up around 6:50 and were asked about dessert and decided we should just leave and get some sweets elsewhere because of the rush. Miso Dengaku Eggplant - these are a favorite around here for good reason. Soft and delicate eggplant paired with a flavorful sauce. Slightly sweet, savory, and salty mixed with the perfect umami. Eggplants are great at absorbing flavor and really made use of the sauce. Spicy Cod Karaage - cod was rich in flavor, soft in texture. Not too spicy, but just enough to enhance the buttery fish meat and fried outer layer with another flavor. Overall great to share. Black Cod Collar Miso - one of their famous dishes for good reason. Extremely soft cod that falls off the bone and is easy to tear apart. Miso glaze that is all three parts savory, salty, and umami. Worth ordering over and over. Beef Yakiudon - one of the more basic dishes built for filling up the group. Beef was tender, yakisoba udon noodles and vegetables were standard. Sauce was a bit on the sweeter side, but this had a good amount of carbs to pair with the delicate seafood and fill us up. Kama Meshi Unagi - I'll start by saying this is tasty, but man is it pricey. Supposedly feeds two which we collectively thought was laughable. Unagi was super soft and tender, using the word delicate again would be accurate. Rice was well sweetened and marinated with unagi juices. Worth trying but definitely don't expect this to be filling. Spicy Tuna and Sassy Salmon Rolls - while seemingly basic, these rolls were on the tangy, sour side. Primarily the fish, which tasted like it was doused in vinegar. Would honestly skip these rolls in favor of actual fish dishes here.

Make a text reservation. No frills, authentic Japanese restaurant. Wide selection. I'm still thinking about the salmon belly and blackened cod. Prices are reasonable. Gyoza are a strong starter choice. The veggie tempura plate is massive.

Very old and traditional restaurant in Japantown! It was very easy and quick to get a reservation via text with the number on their website! If you reserve, you can get a tatami room where you have to take your shoes off and step in. The food was wonderful and they have specials daily! Their bar was down at the time that we went in, so no cocktails or liquor.

Great place to get homey Japanese food! They have a humongous menu with quality service! The place is pretty spacious, very authentic and traditional feel. The food was amazing, everything we tried was delicious. Overall, I highly recommend and I would come back.

My local friends recommended we come here for some authentic Japanese food while we were visiting. We texted ahead to reserve a table for 5 since it is a popular place. They don't take phone calls or reservations online - very old school. Which I think makes it more desirable. We ended up getting a special room with a "chabudai" style table! I was super excited because I've never experienced it before. What I did find pleasant was that although it was a lower table, there was an opening beneath the table that allowed your legs to hang rather than having to sit Indian style. Tyson was an amazing server. Was attentive, accommodated our allergies and was thoughtful with us having a young child. He was so pleasant and polite! We enjoyed the following: Baked miso glazed eggplant - YUM and melts in your mouth. Black Miso Cod Collar - this was pleasantly surprising and so delicious. Eat bite was tender and flavorful. Simple yet so appetizing. Sushi rolls were both fresh and well prepared. The nigiri was also great and fresh- not fishy. We additionally ordered takoyaki - which I normally don't love but this one was very tasty and I enjoyed the texture. Lastly karage chicken which came with a creamy slaw. Overall it was such a pleasant experience and we look forward to coming back!

For my birthday dinner, my sister referred this restaurant for me as I had a taste for Japanese food in Seattle! This was the first time that I had try this restaurant so I did not know what to expect. I was informed that this is the oldest Japanese restaurant in Seattle. According to my husband you must make a reservation in advance- this restaurant is very small. Making a reservation is a bit old school- you send a text and they respond if they can accommodate you or not. We made a reservation a couple of weeks in advance. We were there on a Sunday night at 6:30, and it was full. The restaurant is maybe not the place to go if you want a lively or romantic night. The walls are painted a pale yellow and the lighting is not the best. Tables are super close together as well. The ambiance could be better- with that said, if you coming for the food, rather than the ambiance you are in the right place. Definitely an old school vibe/ If you seek more privacy as you are with a group of people- they do have tatami rooms for four or more people. This could be a fun adventure. When we sat down, we were informed some time later (15 minutes later), than if you seek food now, you should order cold food, as the kitchen is behind so it could take at least 30 minutes to get food-- This almost seemed like a ploy to order sushi. As we were told, that the California rolls had real crab, we decided to get them, otherwise I would of skipped this sushi choice. Beyond the sushi, we order octopus balls, dumplings and a meat and noodle dish. All were good, but nothing blew my mind....We have eaten at a lot of Japanese restaurants. Service was ok, but not excellent.

    Chirashi Don and Otoro Sushi
    Patrick P.

Maneki is the oldest Japanese restaurant in Seattle and they serve many traditions dishes and different kind of sushi and sashimi. They also have daily specials. I had their Chirashi Don and Otoro Sushi. They were very fresh and tasty. The price is affordable compare to other famous Japanese restaurants. All the staff were very nice from the moment they greeted me. They have a regular dining tables and also have traditional tatami rooms. The interior is neat and has a traditional vibe. I would highly recommend to visit Maneki if you are in Seattle.

    Spicy tuna roll, Smoked Salmon
    Huong N.

I cannot say enough how wonderful the staff is here at Maneki! Make sure you call to make a reservation because it is definitely difficult to get a walk in seat. My partner and I were super lucky last weekend when we walked in and were able to be seated because there was a spot that they were able to squeeze us in! There are daily specials on the wall, so make sure you take a photo before you sit down. The menu is pretty extensive and we loved everything we tried. The prices were all really reasonable and after tip, our bill came out to be roughly $120 which isn't bad at all for six dishes! The sushi tasted super fresh and the karaage was fried to perfection. It came with a cabbage slaw and a really nutty/savory dressing that was absolutely delicious. Really looking forward to coming again next time I'm in Seattle (with a reservation in advance)!

    black cod, popular sashimi set
    Ariella N.

We ordered the popular sashimi set, the black cod dish, and the unagi bowl. More than enough food for two! The black cod dish surprised us the most. Very buttery and flavorful, I would definitely come back for this dish alone. One of the best fried fish we've ever tasted, and it was only $17! We loved every piece of the popular sashimi set. the main difference from the basic set is that the popular set comes with fatty tuna. It is quite pricey, and alot of food, we would be happy just getting the basic set next time. The unagi set was typical. Flavor was mild, the dish is mostly rice.

Came here on a Saturday night with a reservation for 6. We were seated in one of the private rooms with floor mat seating which made the experience feel cozy and unique. The service was amazing. Chloe was so attentive and detailed with her recommendations, sharing both the bestsellers and her personal favorites. Before talking about the food, I have to mention the tea. It was so good and warm. The staff refilled it multiple times for our party of six. I ordered the salmon namban which was pretty tasty. The sassy salmon was also delicious, though I personally prefer spicy salmon with sriracha mayo instead of chili sauce. The friends all enjoyed their food and we were all happy and full folks by the end of dinner. I highly recommend checking this place out, but make sure to place a reservation!

    Maneki Reviews in Other Languages

    Ask the Community - Maneki

Hi, online states that Maneki is temp. Closed? Is it closed?

    Not anymore!

Will you get a confirmation about your reservation after you texting them?

    Yes you should

Anyone know if the tatami rooms are open/reservable?

    Yes reservable via phone

I saw dine reservation is open on the website, anyone knows how to contact them? I tried 3 different numbers, none of them worked.

Try calling the 2nd number during restaurant business hours. Someone will answer and take your reservation. I was able to get one.

    Are they taking dine in?

    No, reservation only.

    Do they do omakase?

From the various reviews it appears they do.

    Is the bar open seating?

    Yes!

    Where do you park?

They do not have designated parking, you have to find street parking. Generally in the evening, it is not hard to find parking north of Jackson up the hill on Main Street or you may have to go up one more block to Washington. This is a common…

Do you have to call to make a reservation for a small party (2 people), or can you just walk in?

They told me there are no walk-ins. You can make a reservation for a table by texting the number on their website. But, if you're willing to stand in line before they open, the sushi bar seating (probably seats about 10 ppl total) is available first…

Do they have normal seating too? Not just on the floor?

Yes, they have tables, a small bar, as well as the tatami rooms.

What dish are they best known for? Excited to visit and go next Thursday! Have my RSVP!

    Miso black cod

    Do they have [vegan] natto?

Daren. We didn't have vegan natto, but we did try squid natto. Very tasty. I had even better natto in Pittsburgh.

They do check up on you every so often, especially for water refills. The space is quite big and they can seat lots of people, they even had a big party of 10 when we dined in but without enough space to walk around and still seat many in booth or chair seating. Food didn't take too long to arrive which was nice as we were starving. The food portions are pretty big! The breading on the katsus were crunchy and flavorful. The udon was perfect: gooey hard boiled eggs, huge ebi katsu, chewy noodles and the same comforting curry. The chicken katsu was good but the chicken was on the dry side for me. My boyfriend was very pleased with the curry and katsu saying that we had to come back and try the other dishes. The iced green tea was refreshing, the salad's dressing for the side salad was pleasant and the miso soup had tofu, seaweed and green onion so it was excellent! Definitely recommend this spot to those who enjoy Japanese cuisine.

When we were seated, there were only about three other occupied tables, all with couples. Two of those tables were already being served their food. We placed our order, but our food didn't arrive for about an hour despite the restaurant appearing to be fully staffed. To make matters worse, multiple tables that were seated after us received their food before we did. The long wait might have been easier to overlook if the food had been worth it, but it wasn't. I ordered the seven-piece sushi assortment with a baked crab roll, and more than four pieces of the fish were still partially frozen. The fish did not taste fresh, which was especially disappointing after such a long wait. An hour to assemble seven pieces of sushi seemed excessive. Seeing that more than half of the fish was still partially frozen made the hour-long wait make a lot more sense. Maybe they were waiting for it to defrost before serving it. My sister ordered a baked crab roll and two pieces of seared snow crab. The seared snow crab was completely forgotten until I had already finished my meal. We had to remind the staff before they rushed to prepare it. The baked crab roll itself was decent, but the combination of the extremely slow service, disorganized order handling, partially frozen fish, and forgetting an entire dish until we asked about it means we won't be returning.

It was cool to get to try the different types of Toro, and I enjoyed tasting them side-by-side to see the differences. The toppings were one of their house, sauces, fried garlic, and chives. I enjoyed the house sauce the best. I was also looking forward to the Crispy Rice which came with crispy rice w/ salmon roe, wasabi aioli, & aonori with spicy tuna. You could choose what type of fish went on it, but obviously we got tuna. This was a yummy bite. Came out piping hot. Beautiful presentation. The tuna was perfectly prepared. The salmon roll was an interesting touch but actually worked well. I think it's sacrilegious to go out for sushi and not get miso soup, so We also added a miso soup to our order. Solid miso soup. No critiques. Came out piping hot. Because I felt like we needed a vegetable, we had the House Spring Mix which came with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes & cucumber w/ spicy garlic ponzu. I enjoy the salad dressings at Japanese restaurants because I feel like they're very distinct. I don't think this one was as distinct, but it was still good. The cherry tomatoes weren't mushy at all, which I appreciated. I do enjoy a spring mix, but Romain or arugula will always have my heart. Moving onto rolls. We started with the Capitol Hill Roll which came with snow crab mix, avocado & cucumber topped w/ seared salmon, scallions, tobiko, sweet aioli, sweet chili & soy glaze. This was my favorite roll of the night, but I would love to go back and try some of their other rolls. They have a huge menu. I love a sushi that has seared salmon, but IDK if that still makes it sushi. My dad loves asparagus, so we got the El Diablo shrimp tempura, shibazuke & asparagus topped w/ seared snow crab legs, pico de gallo & chipotle. It wasn't the most traditional roll, but I did enjoy it. I probably wouldn't order it again when there's so many other good things to try on their menu, but Im glad that I got to try two rolls. Because we're celebrating my mom's birthday, they brought ice cream. It was a solid ice cream, even though we just got vanilla. It had good flavoring, even for vanilla.

We got there with an hour left on HH on a Wednesday night with no reservation and got seated pretty quickly. 1/5 Edamame came out cold and needed more salt - although complementary it should really come out hot 3/5 Bad boy 3/5 Crunch Seattle 3/5 Crunch cali 3/5 Seaweed salad Not a huge fan of the fried rolls. It was probably our fault, as we ordered three instead of getting a variety. The seaweed salad was topped on some greens which I would've just preferred the seaweed without it. Just a chill nice place. Cute garden in the middle and there's plenty of seating in the back.

The menu isn't too expansive, instead offering a few dishes at high quality. I ordered the Gyo Gyo En Bento Box (I had to, the dish had the restaurant's name in it!). It included large chunks of salmon poke, tuna salad, pickled cabbage, curry, imitation crab salad and seaweed - what a deal! Portions were generous and taste was delicious. Our party also ordered a shoyu ramen and salmon poke bowl and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Service was excellent as well. I'm tempted to come back here the follow day just to try something different!

It's definitely cozy, though "cozy" is doing some work here. I tried the Creamy Wagyu Ramen and the Premium Bara-Chirashi Bento. The ramen was good, with the creamy broth doing most of the heavy lifting. Rich, flavorful, and enjoyable all the way through. It never got overly heavy or tiring; although, given the portion size, it may simply not have been given enough time to wear out its welcome. The noodles were pleasantly soft, held onto the broth nicely, and kept their texture until the end. Nothing particularly memorable about the noodles themselves, they understood their assignment: transport broth to mouth. The Wagyu was tender and cooked well. My only complaint? There wasn't enough of it. A recurring theme, as it turns out. The chirashi was also good. The salmon was the standout; fresh and easily my favorite part of the bento. The octopus was noticeably firmer and chewier than I'm used to, bordering on too tough, though not enough to ruin it. I was also a little disappointed to see packaged wasabi. With a premium chirashi, I was hoping for something better. And again: the portion was small. The prices are a little high, but being next to Amazon means I came prepared for that. What I wasn't prepared for was the portion apparently being optimized for cloud storage! Good food, minimal footprint.

Our server was also incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and gluten allergies, which made ordering so easy. They were very accommodating and helped us feel confident about what I could safely eat. Would definitely come back next time I'm in Seattle! Plus they are open later than many restaurants, which accommodated our 9pm arrival in Seattle.

You should prepare your entire party ahead of time to stretch their vocal cords before your night out, otherwise you will not be able to hear each other. I'm not sure what is going on with the acoustics inside of Umi, but it is insanely loud (it might not be that way for everyone though, I do have a hearing problem). Umi is the Japanese word for ocean, which is very fitting since you can order any fish possible here. And somehow, my homie that I was with decided to order a steak. I can't fault him, he was ravenous at the time. Admittedly, the steak looked fantastic as well. My other homie is a vegetarian. And even though this is not the most vegetarian-friendly establishment, he was still able to have a nice meal. He explained to me that he is a tofu connoisseur, so we ordered the Agedashi tofu. I've never had tofu prepared this way, and it was some of the best I've ever had. It was bathing in a dashi broth, which was the perfect level of saltiness, almost like a miso soup. The tofu was fried, and when you let it sit in the broth for a bit, it creates a fantastic consistency to each bite. In order to test the true caliber of a sushi spot, you have to try a specialty roll. I was feeling a little spicy that day, so I elected for the Knockout. It didn't exactly knock me out, but I was impressed. First of all, this roll was a looooooong boy special. I always prefer sushi to be made this way, because if a roll is only 6 pieces, the experience is over far too quickly. The roll itself was very enjoyable, and I even convinced Mr Steak to have a bite (he seemed to like it too). A little bit of truffle oil took this thing to the next level, they're definitely innovating in the world of sushi over here. I'd love to come back and try more rolls from the extensive menu here. Maybe something like the Hottie Roll, which was my nickname in high school.
