I stopped in with a friend for the first time at the tail end of happy hour on a Thursday evening. They let us take our time to order, and still applied the happy hour prices. I'm usually skeptical of dollar oysters, but my friend convinced me to order some anyway. They were perfectly fresh and delicious. We ordered a couple of tapas - the chorizo and the asparagus, both very, very good; and we ordered a salad with shrimp for a larger plate. It was also great. Looking forward to trying more of the menu. Bonus points- The olive oil they served with their bread was a beautiful color with a rich flavor. I am super judge-y about the quality of the olive oil a restaurants served. They scored high! read more

The waitress was the better part of the experience. Not in service, but in overall demeanor. From the moment we sat down, we received water, which was never refilled, ordered items , one of which was currently unavailable. I ended up ordering the salmon which was overcooked and had the texture of chicken and served in a broth that though tasty, didn't make up for the horrible taste. My partner ordered the fish tacos which was the equivalent of a frozen fish stick in a tortilla and some market greens. No flavor, no sauce, no nothing. To add insult to injury, in the middle of our meal we were joined by a huge cockroach that was scurrying across the floor and flustered guests so much that one woman ran out...good luck on that bill. I wouldn't recommend that anyone spend their time, money or energy here. We also took the time to share our concerns prior to leaving and the response was incredibly nonchalant and dismissive. I've passed this cute spot many times but was skeptical to order because of the prices. I finally caved and I'm so glad I did! I ordered the meat & cheese combo, kale salad, & patatas braves. I would never have expected to find good croquetas within walking distance of my house, but Manchego proved me wrong. They are almost as good as the "best" authentic croquetas in the city and I've been working for Spaniards in food & bev for 8 years --- so I feel equipped to judge a croqueta. Lamb sliders also very tasty and a decent wine selection. Work your way through the menu, and find the stars, there are a few. This is more that enough to make it one of the better spots in the area. I've always said that it's fantastic when, in the journey of life, you're actually proven wrong about something. In this case, there have been adjustments which render my initial review off-base. If you are not coming here, then you're missing out on what is probably the most personable and friendly staff on the Cortelyou Road strip. Too, the addition of live music is just awesome. Lastly, I think only the friendliest people in the surrounding area frequent this spot; always great for striking up really interesting conversations. That being said, the service was good - waitress was polite and attentive - and the space has a nice vibe to it, but the tapas are really hit or miss. Went in on Friday night and was super empty. Actually it was almost always kind of empty whenever we walked pass it and I wondered how they stay in business. And after our meal, I know why----very pricey for their food. 1. Super slow service. Although the servers took our order very promptly (considering when we went in, there was only 3 other sets of customer...this should be normal). The food came in SUPER SLOWLY. Huge gaps in between dishes....like 20mins gaps...not 5 mins......this place is serving tapas right? So you really don't take 20mins to finish your 3 tiny balls of croquette....more like 2 mins. 2. Expensive I know we are eating tapas. I know tapas are tiny little dishes....but charging $16 for a tiny plate of octopus is expensive for this neighborhood. We were there during happy hour time and had 3 dishes from the happy hour menu that was $6 each and on top of that we had the octopus and slider. That in total was over $70 for 2 people.....if we come 30 mins later during not happy hour time then it would be over $90! Isn't it kind of crazy? If we eat at the farm..it would be half that price 3. Food tasted ok Some of the dishes tasted good, some were meh. The octopus tasted good, although pretty oily. The fries with the slider tasted pretty good, the slider itself is pretty dry and very lamby.. Overall I don't think I will be there again. I'm sorry to say, but I wouldn't recommend eating here. I may go back for a $5 glass of wine, some $5 fried potatoes and asparagus at happy hour, but that's about it. I wanted to love this place given its in my neighborhood and has a great looking interior, but the food disappoints. The service is very nice and friendly, but they don't know anything about food and wine and they are visibly inexperienced and understaffed. Here are the details: Was going to order pan con tomato, but saw another table actually say "we can't eat this" and sent it back. It looked very sickly with a couple of poor tomatoes on top of raw bread. Pan con tomato is supposed to be nicely toasted bread rubbed with a great tomato leaving the pulp all over the bread, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with salt...... What happened to this version....I don't know. It's like having spaghetti in Cambodia....ketchup on noodles. My 2 year old daughter and I ended up trying a variety of things off of the happy hour menu to determine if the food would be good, but we should have known at the pan con tomato observation. (Mind you she is a very discerning eater gobbling down any food that tastes good and she tried everything, but wouldn't eat much more.) Potatoes bravos, nicely fried and salted. Sauce left much to be desired. It tasted like miracle whip and a cheap ketchup. I love potatoes so I'd be happy to eat them fried and salted by itself. Cheese Croquettes - gross - tasted like bechamel and that was it. I get that they use that as the base, but it had no flavoring of cheese and they drizzled the miracle whip on top of it. Disappointing at best. Fried calamari - not terrible, but not good. The calamari was actually tender, but the disappointing part was that is was breaded the same as the cheese croquette and the miracle whip was on the side for dipping. Pretty boring. Honestly if you get something fried it doesn't really matter what's inside because it all tastes the same with the breading and the miracle whip. Asparagus - this was probably the best thing we ate. Cooked well, fresh and romesco sauce was nice. Jamon serano - this is probably the worst ham I've eaten ever. It says aged 18 million months but tasted worse than deli ham (not that I ever eat that). It was wet, moist and chewy. My daughter spit it out. I tried to eat it but just left it for them to take back. Honestly I'm not expecting the tapas that I've had in San Sebastian, Madrid or Barcelona, but I am at least expecting food that's appetizing and makes me want to come back. I'm guessing this menu was thrown together quickly, there is no chef and the cook was trained over a few days. What a disappointment. We waited over an hour and 15 minutes for some of our food (the cod). When it arrived, it was basically inedible and (as the joke goes) an incredibly small portion for 14 bucks. They comped the cod but even if we hadn't ordered that, it took about an hour to get pan con tomate (2 teeny pieces, cold), asparagus and a pretty dismal tortilla topped with squirts of mayo. I hope they do some readjusting. We left hungry and hot (there's no ac). Maybe it was an off night, but if you're going, go knowing you might end up getting dinner somewhere else afterwards. read more

She was attentive and kind and she makes thee best white sangria with passionfruit that tastes oh so heavenly! Check her out! No. No. No. All wrong. I'm so sorry! But, no. I understand they are new, and if things change, I will totally rewrite this. I live a block away so would love to have a great tapas spot nearby. But, seriously, everything about this place feels slightly off right now. If you have has tapas in in Spain, or tapas prepared by people who are from Spain (or have spent a lot of time there), you will notice the gi-normous gulf between that experience and this one. Which I wouldn't mind as much if the prices were not so astronomical. For small plates! Two specific food examples: The meats and cheeses, normally the center of the tapas experience, did not seem freshly cut/prepared and the manchego was very bland. The grapes were shriveled. The seafood - shrimp and octopus in this case - were waaay overcooked and so they were rubbery and tasteless. But just the general vibe was all wrong. Rather than a convivial, chatty scene, with people sharing tons of small plates since each one is cheap and fresh, the waiters were awkward and clearly had only the most basic grasp of how to pronounce the names of the food. They do a great job with the Ramen place that is connected to the restaurant. But they don't get this food at all. We asked if we could just get one of the cheeses but were told we had to buy the whole pricey platter. What is small about that? A meal for two with the platter followed by three "small plates" and two glasses of wine was over 90 dollars before the tip. Just freaky. Like the whole experience. read more

I don't find myself in this are much, but while visiting my best friend last week he suggested we grab a bite at this new place called Manchego. Manchego, being my favorite of the Spanish cheeses, how could I say no. We started with a pitcher of delicious sangria and after, we wanted a bottle of wine. The bartender, Nina, was amazing and suggested the best red for the food we were ordering along with some menu suggestions. The pulpo was amazing, and the croquetas probably the best I've ever had. The charcuterie plate with cheeses and cured meats was delicious. Definitely coming back here. Sit at the bar if you go and let the experienced bartenders help you out. read more

Atmosphere is cool, loved the guitarist. We've stopped by for wine a couple of times and enjoyed it. They have an amazing location, right off the train. Easy spot to pop into. That being said, we went for dinner last night and I think we're done here. For two of us, we spent over $100 (partially because we were overcharged and the server refused to fix it) and the absolute truth is that the food was pretty bad. We eat out 3-4 times a week, I'm not someone that usually gives reviews one way or the other. I've managed restaurants for 15 years, I get it when you just go in on an off night. All four tapas dishes we tried were similar; over sauced, oiled or cheesed. No finesse, no respect for the product, it was just poor quality, poorly executed. i've had an overwhelming feeling of being ripped off since I left. Came here with my friend the other night. For a Friday night, it was surprisingly empty. But I liked that, because I did not have to yell over anyone, or feel too crowded. ...as much as I liked it, though, it did not bode well for the business that it wasn't even half full, or 3/4 full. They had designed inlets into the exposed brick walls where they put large white candles and as the candles melt, wax dripped down the walls. I thought this added a very nice decoration. The menu was full of tapas, and that was lovely. We ordered a bunch of things - we were really hungry too! A cheese plate, potatoes, a flatbread, croquettes, dates and bacon, and sangria. First, the cheese plate: I thought the cheeses were very good. It was strange to me, though, that they did not serve them on a more cracker-like bread; instead, they were served with the house bread, a hard type bread. It did not accompany the cheese plate well. Next, the dates and bacon were loved by my friend. The croquettes were good, gooey with cheese on the inside, nice texture outside. The flatbread, though, tasty felt like a glorified pizza. Worse: the potatoes. The sauce for it was just some mayo and ketchup, and they were not appealing at all. The sangria was good, but not super amazing. It satisfied thirst. Overall, this place is very cute, and vibe is very nice. But the food was a bit disappointing. The best plate: the cheese. The worst plate: potatas bravas. Had a great tapas meal here with a super (and reasonably priced) bottle of wine. All the tapas was above par. From the jamón serrano to the croquettes, cheese and octopus-- all of it was fantastic.
