I had high hopes for manchego. A good wine and tapas bar near the workplace can be a Godsend. However, manchego didn't really impress. Their signature sangria was sickeningly sweet. Their Spanish focused wine list had some good choices. They don't offer flights. I know there's a lot of wine bars that don't, but not having wine flights available at a wine bar is a point of contention for me personally. In my opinion, the purpose of a wine bar, especially one that focuses on a specific region, is to taste and try a bunch of different wines. That's hard to do if you have to have a full glass of each. A flight gives you the opportunity to try and compare a few which is nice. We had to flag down the waiter both for our original order and to order new drinks. Nobody ever came to check if we liked the food etc and we had to ask a couple times for water. So from a service standpoint that could've been better. The Papas bravas we're just ok. They were cooked well but there wasn't much seasoning. The sauces on top were just mayo and ketchup which we weren't expecting. A chipotle mayo or something more on theme of the restaurant would've been better and easy to do. The bread was the kind that may have been good once but, it was stale. The cheese was good. We did not like the calamari. The aioli for it was good but the calamari itself was over breaded and very over cooked. We did like the asparagus with Calabrian chili (not pictured). read more

Went to dinner and drinks at Manchego with my fiancé. Food was decent but nothing to rave about. We got lamb sliders and cocktails from The manchego part and some gyoza from Koko Ramen. The gyoza were great and the rest was decent. The weird thing was we left and 5 minutes later my fiancé realized that he accidentally left his new mask on the table. We hurried back to get it and my fiancé walked in alone asking for his mask. The guys inside Manchego said they threw the mask out. My fiancé exits and I walk in and ask the same question. I ask them to take the mask out of the garbage and show me because it was expensive and it had only been a few minutes so I figured it wouldn't be that bad...long story short the guy comes out with the mask-in perfect condition. Nothing was on the mask to indicate it was in the trash and so it makes me ask...why didn't they give the mask back in the first place--When my fiancé asked for it? This was shady and not cool. We had such a lovely surprise meal here yesterday -- we thought they'd only have pickup so we ordered takeout. When we arrived, we realized there was a big, beautiful, open patio with lights and plants and lots of space, so we asked if we could sit to eat. They said yes, and the staff surprised us by making it a meal to remember -- they brought out our food in courses to make it feel like a normal tapas meal (the octopus and shrimp are SO good), poured our wine and brought out an ice bucket on a chair... I realize I sound like I've never been to a restaurant, but it's been a long time at home in our apartment, and the staff really went above and beyond to make this a special night out... for absolutely no reason other than that they're lovely human beings who seem to truly love the work they do. Very cozy, laid back tapas bar. Feel free to sit anywhere, don't wait for the host or waiter like I did. The service was very friendly and attentive. I thought their menu was pretty elaborate even though some items were way too overpriced. We order the pitcher of red sangria and it tasted very diluted. The tapas we tried were the fried wedges, ham and cheese on toasted bread and Brussels sprouts with bacon. The Brussels sprouts were my favorite. The ham and cheese on toast was literally two bites each and cost about $9, not worth it. Came here on Saturday afternoon around 3ish and I believe they were getting ready to change menus because of the ending brunch hour (4 I think) - so check the hours before you go. But, overall I was very pleased with the food and I love the quaint environment. The Calamari Tapas were great, it was the perfect consistency; I found the grilled flatbread and tomatoes a bit underwhelming though. Loved the lamb sliders and grilled meat with french fries. The flavor was amazing!! I enjoyed the Sangria and a Spanish beer. I would definitely come back to see what else they have to offer. This restaurant is my biggest sadness in my neighborhood. I was so excited when I saw we were getting a tapas bar. I love Spanish tapas and was in Barcelona last year. I had high hopes. I refuse to give up The ramen place is great and they are one owner. I don't understand why the food is so bland and has no remnants of real tapas flavor or intention. The sangria was awful. Worst I've ever had. And all ice. I complained and then Our caring server had the bartender take some ice out of the pitcher He wasn't happy but at least understood the need to make the customer happy. I wish the chef( that's a generous term) would want the customer to be happy. I am waiting to return in hopes they will start to make decent food. I tried Manchego for the first time this past Thursday. What a wonderful night out! The live Flamenco dancing and music was beautiful. The ambience is very nice. Great wine selection. I ordered the mussels and the flatbread. Some of the best mussels I've ever had - perfectly cooked in a hearty soup like sauce. The flatbread was crispy and loaded with bubbly delicious manchego cheese. Will definitely be back. I thought I was just going for dinner but it turned out to be a fabulous night out right in the neighborhood! I did see some people wrote pretty bad reviews. They are a relatively new restaurant so maybe they had some kinks to iron out at the beginning. At this point, my experience with the food and the service was excellent. read more

Came on Thursday. Wanted to try Happy Hour and tapas menu. Ordered Sangria it was very good. Nice amount of sweetness and alcohol. Next tapas had Ham croquet it was very delicious wish they would have given one extra piece . The Chorizo had nice flavor . I guess when COVID started they were good because they needed customers . But after getting customer there service when downhill. Since COVID started and restaurants had outside dinning I visited this place numerous times. My last experience was horrible . I had to wait 15 minutes for wine. What really was the icing on the cake ..we ordered 1 ramen bowl before this family of 4 was seated and they got their 4 ramen bowls with drinks before us. When I bought it to that server attention , she bought the bowl put right away. Which did not taste good . So I then asked the waiter to replace it with fries. Fast- forward to when the bill came I see they charged my for food I didn't like or eat. because I tasted it , they said I ate and charged me for it. I am not happy with my service . Worst dining experience ever on Cortelyou. Waited 15 mins for the waitress after being seated. Ordered 3 salads and waited over an hour for them to arrive. When they came none resembled the menu. Beet, almond and manchego salad came without beets almonds or manchego. Serrano ham and poached egg salads on frisee came without frisee. While waiting for the salads I asked for an IPA from the menu. Waitress said she didn't have it and suggested something else that "tasted just like it". It was a light pilsner. I had an amazing experience at Manchego. Though not particularly close to my apartment, I heard some good things and decided to check it out. I had such a great time that I will definitely be returning, even though its farther from me than many of my neighborhood favs! Firstly, the drinks are great. The bartender (Phoebe, I believe her name was?) was super friendly and very knowledgable about all the the wines, she made some great recommendations to me and the friend that I had come with, and we both loved the dry white we ended up with per her suggestion. After wine we decided to switch to cocktails. We both got the seasonal "El Jardin" comprised of gin, tonic, lime, and fresh fruit-- a perfect summer drink. The food was similarly excellent, perfect little bites to accompany our drinks. Overall I loved this spot, it is such a hidden gem. Everything is well priced and everyone who works there seems like they are genuinely having a good time. Great vibes all around! read more

Big Fan of Spanish Tapas and have tried throughout the city so I figured another spot in Brooklyn-Sure Ill try it. First thing that I noticed upon entering was a very heavy unpleasant smell not food or spices as I would have expected but some unknown foul smell. Anyway we got used to the smell and quickly ordered some happy hour tapas since it was 5 min before 7. Patatas bravas-- Sad hard fried potato chunks with ketchup and Mayo drizzled over --I could have made up better ones at McDonald's with an order of fries and some condiment packets....Calamari-maybe 6 rubbery pieces not good at all and even at happy hour prices terrible value. Croquettes were decent maybe a 6 out of 10 for flavor and consistency. Main Tapas we ordered was Tortilla, Chorizo and Garlic Shrimp.(tried to hit all the basics) Only one not messed up was the shrimp which was decent. Oh the margaritas (classic straight up) tasted like triple sec and lime -terrible let down... In addition the bartender would not stop picking his teeth with his fingernail while taking orders with patrons unlucky enough to be sitting at the bar. read more

Ok I gave it two tries, but there is work that needs to be done. Stop slathering everything with mayo and ketchup. Just stop. Its so gross and unnecessary. If you aren't confident enough in the dish you're serving that you feel lik eyou need to pile on these condiments then work on the dish. The croquettes are good but they cover it up in mayo. The calamari, served with mayo. The patata bravas, scorching hot, but a little hard and covered with ketchup. What I will say was amazing: the grilled baguatte with mushrooms and cheese and the spanish sliders. They need to invest in better ingredients, better cooking and have pride in what their serving DOn't cover it up with store bought sauces. We ordered a chocolate lave cake for dessert even that was drenched in hersheys syrup, whip cream and sprinkles (who put sprinkles and syrup on this?!) The cake itself actually did taste good but the syrup ruined the whole thing. Make a fudge sauce to drip over and use vanilla ice cream or authentic cream. And don't let the aioli written on the menu fool you, they straight up serve you mayo and ketchup. Maybe they mix in some stuff with it but it tastes like heinz or hellmans out of the bottle for real. NOT COOL! Its not a fast food joint, its a restaurant, do better! This was one of the worst experiences I have had dining anywhere. Instead of making customers feel welcome, they did everything to make us feel as upset as possible. On a boiling hot night, the air conditioning was barely on. It took ten minutes for someone to come to seat us. It took another ten minutes for someone to bring us menus. Then, the bartender took one of our menus with a "you don't need this, ok?" Then a waiter arrived and took out order. During the order, I emphasized that it was a hot day and I was very thirsty and needed water. The bartender brought my friend's drink and still no water. Approximately thirty minutes after we had entered, I still didn't have water and the waiter was very rude. So, we told him to cancel our order and we went to eat at The Farm. Cool ac there, considerate service and delicious food. You couldn't pay me to go back and manchego is two blocks from my house. Also, ridiculously overpriced. :( read more

The cheese and meat platter is phenomenal, the octopus is one of the best I've had and the skirt steak is just right. It's okay. The food is good but not spectacular. Nothing wakes up your taste buds. I ordered the calamari and it was the frozen one. Italians hate frozen calamari. My boyfriend and I went to Manchego tonight for happy hour tapas to have an early dinner--love that they do the special on weekends too! We ended up getting 6 different tapas to share and a glass of sangria each, and the bill came out to about $53 after tax; super reasonable for NYC, and it was delicious! The portions were all very generous, and we easily felt full after splitting these plates. The restaurant is smallish, and the decor is incredibly warm and cozy. The walls are wood paneled, the ceilings have vines with some twinkle lights, and there are edison bulbs throughout. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I didn't take my phone out while we were eating (I was enjoying everything too much!), and currently hate that I didn't take photos of anything (especially the menu). We ordered: 1) Red sangria: if you prefer your sangria to be a bit less on the sweeter side, you'll enjoy this. 2) Fried calamari: my boyfriend ordered this, and I ended up trying it and really enjoying it--I'd never had calamari! The batter was really crisp and it was served with a garlic aioli. 3) Patatas bravas: these tastes absolutely delicious, and I love that the sauce wasn't overpowering or drenching the potatoes. 4) Tortilla española: it was a variation that I can't remember the name of that also included caramelized onions. It was one wedge of tortilla with a small salad, and it was light and delicious like it should be. It's not part of the happy hour menu, but I believe it was only $7. 5) Ham croquettes: three croquettes came with the order, and I honestly have nothing to say aside from "damn, those were good!" 6) Toasted baguette with sautéed mushrooms and manchego: the bread was toasted just right, and there were plenty of mushrooms. The manchego covering this was creamy and delicious. I am going to be dreaming about this until the next time I am there, and this was definitely my favorite. The order came with 2 pieces. 7) Toasted baguette with garlic and tomatoes: this was probably my least favorite but I still enjoyed it. I'm just really picky about tomatoes! The toast was covered with plenty of finely diced tomatoes and the garlic added a pleasant kick. This also came with 2 pieces. I can't speak for authenticity and that seems to be the biggest Yelp complaint, but we couldn't stop raving about what we were eating. The description here is "Spanish-style," and to me that reads as "inspired by," so perhaps they've modified a few things. Whatever they're doing, I think they should keep doing it because it was fantastic and we will definitely be coming back!
