Dined at La Puerta Roja in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, NYC, tonight. We were a party of 8 and they were able to seat us right away. They've got indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating is very interesting and eclectic with great Latin American music. Note: between the music & people speaking, it is difficult to converse with others in the restaurant on a Friday night. So, I was impressed they could seat a large table like us with no notice right away on a Friday night. The service was fantastic coming by frequently and being very patient as the large party decided on what they want. Impressively, all the food was brought out within 2 minutes to everyone at the table at the correct temperature. EVERYONE was raving about their food! I had the steak sandwich (peppers, vegetables, spicy mayo, etc.) with some of the best french fries I've had in ages! I think they were hand cut. The sandwich had a smoky and kicked up flavor. Reminded me of a Chilean chacarero sandwich with the flavor palette. My water was never empty (they refilled often when I was not looking). Portion sizes were huge! Most of us ended up taking our entries home (no one ordered apps). The majority of the table ordered tacos and the fish ones seemed to be the favorite. Everything is priced quite well especially for this part of Brooklyn. My sandwich was only $19! Note: large parties pay an automatic 20% gratuity. Super close to bus lines and only a few blocks from the subway with decent street parking (metered or free). Of course, I biked here and had bike racks right there. I can NOT wait to come again!!!!! This is a neighborhood staple. Solo, date night, with the girl or family it just works. Mid week I stopped in with mi familia. Im currently doing no meat January and they have some really good options. I ordered tostones and the black beans which were extremely good. My brother ordered the lemon thyme chicken . He said it was tasty very lemon heavy and the portions were good. His 2 sides were the garlic spinach and the black beans . Shout out to the really nice girl sitting at the front that gave me and my mom such a warm and lovely greeting on our way out. Now to the food. We had the All-American brunch which consisted of two eggs your way, bacon, fries and toast, and I opted for the fried pork chops, trying to feast on what the place is famous for. It came with yellow rice, one or two maduras and a really flavorfully dressed salad. I came here for dinner with 3 of my friends. It's in a busy area with a lot of people walking by from the train. We decided to share a bunch of food. I ordered a passion fruit mojito mocktail which hit the spot. We started with the guacamole then split the empanadas, flautas, steak sandwich and monfonguitos. Everything was delicious! My bestie recently moved back to the neighborhood and we decided to grab a bite and some drinks. It was packed on a Friday night. We opted to sit outside. It was very cluttered and festively decorated. Loud music, a huge flat screen showing a soccer game. We were seated and given menus right away. But it took about 20 mins for the waiter to come back and take our order. I wanted tacos but they didn't have carne asada or carnitas. My friend who had been before said the empanadas were a hit or miss. So I opted for calamari. She got the nachos with chorizo. We ordered 2 mezcal margaritas with tamarind. Most of calamari was fried to perfection and tender. But smelled fishy and was flavorless. Even after squeezing on lemon. It was bad. Not even salt. Some of the pieces were extremely soggy as well. The more I ate the more I felt disgusted. So I stopped eating. I even asked for jalapeños on the side. They were excellent and helped the calamari a little. 75% of my friend's nachos were soggy. She left over half the food on her plate. The flavor was okay. But they must have poured the oil from the chorizo on top because there was no real reason why they were so soggy. The only thing good about the mezcal margaritas was the tajin rim. There was no smokiness and the tamarind didn't taste authentic. Wasn't a well made drink to me. I asked the waiter about a better mezcal. He said those were made with house mezcal. $15 for a house drink. So we opted for the top shelf mezcal they had. Got another mezcal margarita. I preferred the second one. It had more of a woodsy tree bark profile than smoke. But it was definitely more interesting than the first. Priced at $17 each. The service was okay. Our waiter was kind enough. But he didn't check on us. After taking orders we didn't see him again until the food was dropped off. Then to order the second drink I had to call out to him when he was leaving another table. I think he was bartending too. When he brought out the second drinks I asked for the check. So we wouldn't have to wait. $104.52 before tip felt like a rip off. Since we didn't enjoy anything and left half our food on the plates. I don't see myself returning. Fonda has me spoiled. I came here with a group of friends for brunch after church. It was a nice neighborhood spot, serving Latin cuisine. I got a mixed platter, containing steak, sausage, pork belly, egg, rice and beans, avocado, as well as maduros, which I replaced with tostones. The steak was thick cut, with grill marks, and delightfully tender, juicy, well seasoned. The sausage was also tasty and succulent. The pork belly was extremely crispy, with quite a bit of meat. I also really enjoyed the tostones, which were crunchy and flavorful. The egg was also tasty, especially paired with the meat. The rice was a little bland, and since I'm not a fan of black beans, I didn't try them. Service was decent. Our waitress was very nice and worked hard to make sure we were all taken care of. The prices are very reasonable, even on the dinner menu. I'm not usually in this area of Brooklyn, so I'm not sure when I'll be back, but I would be open to trying dinner here. The food was really flavorful, I enjoyed the chicken enchiladas suizas for the order it gives you the option to select 2 sides. I came here with my mother, she had the churrasco which she happily enjoyed. The entrees are more than enough to fill you up without appetizers, but if you have to get appetizers they have a selection to choose from. The ambience is always lovely and welcoming, inside the restaurant is decently spacious but could feel cramped during busy hours. We sat outside and still had a lovely time, we ordered drinks (of course, what mother daughter day doesn't include that) my mother stood with the coconut mojito which was lovely, subtle taste of coconut with the refreshing taste of a mojito. However, I had a various amount of different drinks all had vodka as the base, I had the Paloma which was a decent drink, lovely pink hue color it contained mezcal and was decent but acidic I changed the drink to try the la flor roja (contains hibiscus) it was another lovely color but it was too acidic for me as a personal taste. The last drink I went with was the lychee martini, if you're up for a challenge, a little bitter but could be sure to the various drinks I had prior I advise to drink it and try it for yourself. Returned last weekend to celebrate my grandma's birthday but had to dock a star because of a couple of things... 1) one of the busboys spilled sauce/oil on my mom's jacket as he was clearing the table. We didn't notice until we were leaving, and mom tried to wash it off as soon as she got home that night. Unfortunately it couldn't come off. 2) I just learned that this is common at some restaurants, but I honestly didn't know that some places charge you for bringing your own cake... it costs $10 here to do that, just FYI! All that aside, we really liked the "outdoor dining" setup, the private enclosed booths. It was a lovely Spring evening so we enjoyed dining in the natural light, whereas inside the restaurant felt like a dark club with the music blasting. There's an inside and outdoor dining space but it still seemed a little cramped inside. The menu offered a variety of things including quesadillas, tacos, empanadas, soups and more. I wasn't overly hungry so I decided to stick with a tortilla soup with a side of tostones. I did decide to have the coconut drink. Overall the food was pretty good. I was surprised that the soup cost $17. It was a huge bowl of soup but it would be nice to have an option to have soup as an appetizer with a smaller portion and more reasonable price. Tostones were good. The drink was great but very strong. People seem to really be enjoying the food and everything seemed freshly made. My issue was service. It took so many tries to get the attention of the server. However I understand that he was doing double duty as bartender and server. It took a minute for the lime that I requested to come. There was no attempt to check in to see how things were with me. Although I did over hear him ask another table if todos estan bien.... This was a nice place we found a few mins away from our apt. We initially wanted to try a place down the block but didn't know they were closed at 3pm. So we went to La Puerta Roja and we made the right choice. We order the guac with chips, the fish tacos and lastly the enchiladas. Everything was tasty and seasoned nicely. The fish tacos were served fried and were crispy. I enjoyed the tacos very much. The fried cod fillets were served with some salsa and a drizzle of spicy crema, I added a spoonful of guac squeezed my lemon on top and devoured all 3 tacos. The enchiladas my wife ordered were also really good. The guac is served with chips and warm corn tortillas. Remember to rip a piece of tortilla off and eat it together with your guac and chips. Well, it was supposed to have eggplant and potatoes, but it was missing the eggplant. I was recommended to this location by a friend of mines, I was not impressed as the rice with peas (arroz con gandules) had no taste, spices or sofrito, my wife ordered a plate of roast pork with white rice and black beans, the food was mediocre and as it was served luke warm and not fresh Grade A, in addition no water was served by the waiter and had to request for water. It's really surprising to see so many new places to eat in Brooklyn these days. I have been visiting a nearby medical facility often over past few months and I usually walk by this restaurant. Menu looks good so one day I set out to try it for dinner. They are capable to serve a group, just call ahead so they can set the tables together. I ordered 2 apps for my meal. The Empanadas Trio (Shrimp, Beef and Chicken) - I am btwn the Shrimp and chicken as my favorite. Skirt steak tacos- I enjoyed but it could have been elevated if the sauce that came with it had more flavor. It was pretty bland sauce as it the to damped the heat from the tacos. But the tacos had no heat... I did not try their alcoholic drinks. Despite my 3star review, I would like to come back and try their entree or /and bar drinks. Sometimes it's the local gems that have your mouth watering Stopped by la puerta roja this weekend where they have both indoor and outdoor seating and Latin music that can be heard throughout. They offer a 90 minute unlimited mimosas/sangria/margarita/champagne/blood Mary option for brunch, while allowing you to also order off their dinner menu. The food here is sooooo good. I got the enchiladas suizas and as an enchilada lover, these were probably one of the best I've ever had. The drinks are super strong, which is good for the price, but I could barely finish my moscow mule! The service was also great, super helpful and nice. I love coming here! I come here with my boyfriend he showed me this place or with his family we love the food and the drinks and the music! There service is amazing always checking on us and making sure everything is correct and they're extremely fast and friendly. They do not hold back on the liquor in your drinks so you will feel the liquor in just one drink itself but overall it's really good. My favorite things on the menu to get here is their calamari ! The calamari is a good portion while you wait for your main dish and it's super yummy with their chipotle sauce on the side it comes with. I recommend to try their trio empanadas very filling and delicious i was surprised to see a shrimp empanada but it was delicious! As for food my go to is the steak sandwich! Very delicious and comes with a side of fries it's super juicy and fills you up well! Their nachos are also good ! I've tried the steak nachos great portion to share.For the drinks their pina coladas are my favorite very delicious looks good for pictures and the liquor really gets to you after just one!
