**review is for Hanh's Banh Mi pop up only, never tried the pasta here** I was so pleasantly surprised to see a new banh mi (and pho) menu pop up in this neighborhood, but a bit skeptical as it's located inside an Italian/pasta restaurant. Turns out the #1 classic banh mi is actually pretty damn good and decently priced at $9.75 (cash only). Could maybe use a little more veggies but hey, I'm not complaining. The bread was fresh and crisp and *didn't* scratch the roof of my mouth. If you're in the area definitely worth stopping in for and I hope it sticks around. Our host and server did say it was gonna be around "for the foreseeable future" which sounds promising! Personally the #2 (roast pork) was just ok, not really worth the extra $1.25 compared to the #1. Pho can also be skipped - lacked flavor and portion is quite small. It's what you'd expect for the area. They even have Viet iced coffee ($5) but it's not as strong and concentrated as it's supposed to be. When Purple Yam shut down, I was curious to see what would take its place. And apparently it is an Italian place. The general set up of the restaurant is the same with the bar in the front and tables at the back. People were generally nice when I came to the counter to order. The prices are semi decent. It is 18 dollars for a rigatoni alla gricia and they use actually guanciale instead of bacon or prosciutto. The flavor was decent. For the price, I am not expecting Eataly level quality but something that could satiate me. And it did the job. Maybe in the future I would try the other pastas or do sit down. read more

A new Italian spot on cortleyou has opened and we have been needing one for a while. Ordered the arancini and the fusilli pasta in the creamy tomato sauce with sausage. I really wanted to like this place. It has nice ambiance, just like purple yam, the predecessor in the space. The food was just average. We had the beet salad. It tasted fine, nicely dressed, but it would better be described as a mixed veg salad with beets. There were very few beets. The branzino in parchment was ok. Fish itself was fine, with a few bland veggies. My tagliatelle with mushrooms was good. Very rich. A bit gimmicky as it's tossed in a big parmesean wheel. Looks cool. It's a very rich Alfredo sauce. Ordered from here on Grubhub however it seems I am unable to write a review. Prices/serving size/quality does not at all match. This is $61 worth of food before the service fee and tip. The cheesecake in the picture is $11.70. The gnocchi with pesto was swimming in oil, topped with old basil, and was too salty even after draining the oil ($22) I really like supporting local restaurants in my neighborhood and am really disappointed. This was our second time here since they opened. When we came when they first opened it was packed and service was a bit slow since they were overwhelmed. I got the rigatoni gricia which was great and my husband the chicken parm. Tonight was our second visit a few months later and it was empty. Maybe it was the time of day, Wednesday 7:30. However, the food was fantastic. I had spaghetti and clams and my husband the steak. My pasta was fresh, generous amount of clams. My husbands steak was delicious as well. It had a nice rosemary crust and the potatoes he loved. We then shared a cheesecake for dessert. The manager or owner checked on us a few times and was very nice. Either improve the quality of the food, or lower the prices. My Tuscan shrimp dish was not worth $28, as it had very small shrimp hidden under a lot of spinach. Perhaps pasta dishes are better? I love Ditmas Park and I am always hunting for new places to eat in this delightful hamlet. My beloved and I ate at the bar of Garlic and Olive. The charming bartendress didn't disappoint with the robust Nebbiolo and the wonderful orange wine. It went downhill from there. The sadness of some pre prepared garlic bread. The most certainly heat and eat arancini. The caesar salad was ok. The pasta vongole...boring overcooked spaghetti and chewy clams. Shrimp scampi, same pedestrian overcooked spaghetti and overcooked shrimp. Also, we didn't get our entrees at the same time...I would say they really need to research what good Italian food is, and probably some better kitchen timing, if they don't, this place will not last. read more

Not that this is so terrible, but, the entire menu was clearly AI generated as if they couldn't just take pictures and write a menu themselves.
