Love this place! Home cooked food is so hard to come by these days and this food tastes just like your mama has made it. My favorite is Chicken Shawarma cooked on the grill, with basmati rice and choice grilled veggies. They serve yellow lentil soup that is very tasty and Kebab dishes have nice cuts of meat and veggies. Generous potions, clean food and restaurant, friendly people. Phenomenal!!! I got the #1 (chicken kebab plate) and my boyfriend got the combo platter (chicken, steak, and kafka kebabs). The combos came with a generous amount of rice, pita bread, grilled vegetables, and hummus. My chicken was DELICIOUS! And the bell peppers had a spicy taste that was so good! We also ordered a side of the jaljak sauce (similar to tzatziki). It has chunks of cucumber in it and we couldn't stop eating it. I think I may have high expectations, but what I'm looking for in Mediterranean cuisine is hard to find! But based on pictures, I knew the Chicken Shawarma was going to be exactly what I like! It includes hummus, pita, rice (I think you have an option to change that to salad if you like), chicken, grilled veggies, and garlic sauce! Perfection! The chicken is delicious! I love Mediterranean food!! I have to admit I'm a little iffy when I go to places that claim to be Mediterranean deliciousness and instead make my stomach turn. This place lived up to the authentic, Mom and Pop, Home style deliciousness I look for in Mediterranean food. One thing though is on the Beef Kabab, its like a carne asada meat rather than the various other places I go use the nice cubed pieces of marinated steak. This can be improved. I also wish they served Basmati Rice... Their rice is good... But Basmati is what I'm accustomed to. The Hummus is very good! I think a tad bit more olive oil on top maybe to make it a little less dry would do the trick, but as for flavor, its very nice. The Chicken Kabab is Delicious... Well cooked, Juicy and very flavorful. The Kafta Kabab also SOOOOOOOOO DELICIOUS!!! I just didnt care for the Beef Kabab due to the meat they use for that one. My biggest complaint would be they serve one piece of Pita Bread per meal!!??? How does one eat a Mediterranean meal with ONE piece of Pita Bread??? If we go to Zankou Chicken we get a pack !!! Anyway, I think for the price they charge a couple pieces would be good. Also on the Garlic sauce, they serve only one side per plate.. Again, 2 would seem more adequate. The Garlic sauce , by the way, Absolutely Delicious!!! I was thrown off by the dill pickles included in the container.... Its usually pickeled Turnips and lil yellow hot peppers.... But nevertheless, the juice it produced was delish. The Shrimp Kabab plate would have been delicious had the shrimp not been too burnt... it was slightly overdone in the CHARRED arena, but had they not over charred it, it would have been delicious, the red sauce they serve with it , is absolutely delicious, my 8 year old even loved it. Lastly the Baklava, One of very delicious ones I've tasted... Very flaky , buttery and not overly sweet, just right!!! Mine however, did NOT come for free as the many before me posted, though we spent over $30 on a take out order.... But hey , its a small business, they definitely need to earn a profit, so no biggie. I will say , its going to be a regular "go to spot" but I still have to share it with Zankou chicken as well!!! the Beef Shawerma and Kabab at Zankous are still my favorite as is their hummus. Kerostena in Garden Grove has some pretty Delicious Hummus as well. But nevertheless, this is Authentic, Great Mediterranean food and we need to patronize this business to keep them around for a long long time!!! Walked in not knowing what to get. I was greeted by Mr & Mrs the owners. Lovely couple who do all the work them selves. She suggested the combo plate and chicken shawarma. As I waited for my order you could see the high flames she was cooking over. This is not fast food but worth the wait. You also can call in your order if you are in a hurry. I was not disappointed in the least. My hubby loved it too. My FAV was the awesomely tender marinated beef kabab. It is was medium sized chunks on the combo platter that when I took a bite I was in heaven. The mixture of spices and very tender meat made me crave more I took home Baklava which is made there. It is flaky, tender and awesome. This is not the cheap drenched in honey Baklava, every bite is crunchy. Next time I am going to try other dishes but Baklava will ALWAYS be ordered. With the high ratings on Yelp, I had high expectations. Went in around 5:30 on a Saturday night, so it was pretty empty. There was only one person who ordered before me, but the food still took awhile. Anyway, I almost decided to leave because as I was ordering, one of the workers was eating (with his hands).. And he was still eating (with his hands) while he was cooking.. Aren't there sanitation rules around that or something? That's why I took off two stars. Kinda gross. The food is good, not the best Mediterranean hole in the wall I've had. But I guess it's the only one in this area. Pita bread & hummus were noteworthy. I met Moma! It was slow and she came out and I got to chat with her. She explained that she cooks to order, so the meat stays fresh, I told her that her beef kabob was the best! I usually don't order beef kabobs because I'm always disappointed, hers were actually better than the chicken. She slyly asked "are you on yelp", ha! She knows her customers! I was so busy today I couldn't escape for lunch until 3:30. Sitting in the parking lot of jack in the box, I looked into my soul and realized I shouldn't go into the jack in the box. The blasting a/c and ice cold soda called to me, but I opened my phone and pulled out yelp and sorted by distance. Moma's? Next to Daiso?!?! Over 100 reviews. Wow, how did i miss that? The place was empty. Literally. He had just gotten back from the market so he couldn't come out right away, I gave him the don't worry I'm looking at the menu wave. Undecided. Combo plate! I get a soda and look around...where to sit? There's a huge fan above the register pointed at the middle table. Perfection! I think he actually turned it up, which was very nice as I was the only customer. I was given a bowl of humus. A BOWL! It was a nice looking bowl too. He asks do you know humus? Yes, I love humus! Is it made here? Yes! That's a lot of humus. Humus in the store usually come in two sizes, the small flat container and the large one. There is enough humus to fill the small container, maybe a tiny bit more. I briefly wonder if Armenian culture dictates which hand to use for food, I break out my phone and quickly realize I am too culturally sensitive. The food takes a while. Like 10 minutes. But I'm alone, no one is around, are they secretly busy? No, as Mama said, it's cooked fresh. There is no faster way, except to call ahead, which I'll add as a tip. The food comes. I eat. And eat. And eat. When I come up for breath to get a soda I offer to pay then, but he waves me off, after you eat! Please, finish your meal first. Before I get too far, he brings a plate of heaven. A little plate of Baklava. He no doubt brings it early, a special warning, don't get too full, you have this waiting. I say wow, in an awed voice. It is delicious. I've made a cheater version of it myself, I can never get the honey right. This is heavenly. How can something be crisp and moist!?!? I hate myself for thinking about coming back and just ordering baclava for lunch. I'm sure there's a corner of hell waiting for me if I do that. But, something dark inside me whispers, it might be worth it. I was the only customer for that hour, it was like my private restaurant. Moma came out and we chatted. I don't know if ill go back. Oh, I'll go to daiso. When I open the door I'll look over at mama's and remember that perfect beef kabob and the meltingly good baklava. That most excellent moment frozen in memory. dare I risk it? I can't bear it if the next kabob isn't as good. I have faith in Mama, but the risk is too great. I shall look, and smile, and remember, and keep going. Chicken shwarma was just ok with chicken being dry, under seasoned with limey flavor. This may have been because I was expecting sliced chicken out of the rotating pit but it is chicken breast; certainly healthy. Falafel was ok and did the job. Pleasant surprise was cheese borak: it is like an empanada with meat and cheese filling. Hummus was also good. I have recently moved from the Glendale area to Orange County. The only worry I had - food wise - was not being able to find really good Mediterranean food near by. Upon an acquaintance's recommendation, I decided to check out Mama's Kabab. My worry has since been calmed. They have, without a doubt, the best hummus I've ever had in my life. Of all the places in the Glendale/NoHo area that I've had hummus, none can hold a candle to Mama's Kabab. I would come to this place just for the hummus. I do not usually review stores but when I do I make sure it's a good one. I ordered kafta kebab and the thing I hate about Mediterranean food is that they put too much sour in the salad which spills over the food and even ruins the the authentic taste of kebab of itself. Not this one. This one was legit. The rice was perfect. The kebab perfect. I loved it. There was a soothing, very soft Armenian music video unlike most restaurants where the music dominates the whole setting, or as I like to call, "ambiance" to "make you feel good" which is really annoying. The food was good. Kebab authentic and excellent. Hosts very friendly and they didn't come up with a fake "is everything okay" for a some stupid tip. Loved it. One thing.. It's not even funny how awesome this place is addicted so far twice in same week it may even be three by this weekend anyway I used the yelp eat 24 app to place my order and it could not be any easier this place rocks and the couple who runs it are adorable everything is good can't say it enough just everything. I've never had a bad experience and transactions using the app to place order in advance has always been a joy. The few times I have dined in has also been pleasant they give you pita chips and hummus to dip in and also free baklava. I probably go here like every other week minimum but sometimes once a week. You guys need to try the lamb kabobs I don't think I have gone back to the regular beef or chicken kabobs. I believe Mama was the cook at Golden Knights in Buena Park. So, We stopped by on a Sunday to check out Mama and her new digs. I rarely get up that way anymore. Mama's is a Classic Mom & Pop operation, very friendly. We had the Beef Shawarma sandwich, and the Beef Kabob plate, the beef melted in our mouths, and the outside had just a tinge of charring, perfection!, and we finished off with an order of Baklava.
