Horrible!!! Mediterranean food is one of my favorites and I decided to try this place out since it was close to my house. I usually go to Aleppo's Kitchen but didn't want to drive 15 min so I settled for Mama's Kabab which was only 3 min away . I usually order the chicken shawarma (chicken, rice, salad, hummus & pita bread) whenever I eat Mediterranean. However, the chicken tasted OLD, like they recooked it after a few days of sitting in the fridge, it was super hard and chewy. Second, the hummus and the white sour cream sauce was both too sour that they both tasted like it was expired. Ugh. I asked for a side salad since they don't include it in their combo which other places usually do, the guy ended up giving me a full salad ENTREE. Like come on man, you know this is all I'm eating why would I need a full salad with it? I think he was just trying to make money off me. Anyways , never coming back. I love this place. But the consistency of the food is sometimes an issue. I usually get the chicken kebab. The plate is perfect with rice and hummus. BUT. The chicken is sometimes a little dry. Which is a shame because when it's cooked right, it's the best chicken kebab I've had in my life. The rice also is incredible. On the good days it's fluffy and perfectly seasoned. On bad days it's gummy and overcooked. The lamb shank is soft and tender but you will know that it is lamb. If you don't like gamey, don't get it. You can't get anything better than this, in this area. Stanton is a city, most don't recognize or have knowledge of its existence. So, to have a place like Mama's Kabab, is wonderful. I came here for a staff lunch at 12pm. We had a party of 12 and didn't put in a reservation. Still, we were treated respectfully. Due to the lunch rush, we managed to combine some tables together and voila, a table for 12 on their lunch break. There was a line, but moved quickly and the restaurant was completely full. Good indication that this place is truly special. I ordered the chicken shawarma wrap sandwich while my coworkers ordered lamb kabobs, beef shawarma, shrimp kabob, and some others. We started off with complimentary hummus and pita. 3/5. Then our plates began to come, it came quick and it took not longer than 3 minutes from the first plate, for all of us to get our orders. The portions are generous. Especially my sandwich. Everyone was amazed at the size. Everything was tasty, I also got a side of Tabbuleh, that was awesome. The chicken shawarma did not have that kick that I'm used to, so it wasn't the best nor something I would constantly come back for. While I think the portions are great, I still consider one spot in Brea to be the best. Anyway, I would still come back to grab this wrap again because at $5, it was worth it. I probably wouldn't spend on a plate. Everyone enjoyed their meal and it was a great staff lunch. We were then given baklava at the end. Soooo good. Perfect way to end the meal. Let me start by saying I'm not an expert on what is good or not in regards to Mediterranean / Armenian food. I have only eaten at a handful of restaurants like this so take my opinions with a grain of salt. In terms of restaurants close by I have tried this place and the Vertical Grill. I definitely like the chicken shawarma and tabbouleh here better. I've also had the combo platter and the portion is pretty large. I actually shared it with my wife and both of us were satisfied (but not super full). The nice thing about this restaurant is its a mom n pop shop and they seem to get pretty busy with to go orders. I would recommend you call ahead of time or place your order online. I tried delivery once but the food got to my house lukewarm. Seriously? This place is shockingly very good. I came here on the strength of the Yelp reviews and it's right down the street from my work. I didn't know what to expect as that shopping center has a defunct Shoe City and the Asian restaurants in that center are not that great. The decor is hole in the wall. But they have a good number of sit down tables and fine for lunch. The folks who run it appear to be a husband and wife pair, who are so nice and want to give you a great experience. You can see the kitchen area behind the counter and what impressed upon me is that the chopped vegetables looked really fresh. It looked like I was looking into someone's kitchen. I got my food to go, and usually something gets compromised within the styrofoam container. This food was delicous. First the pita was fluffy and not dried out. The hummus was super smooth. The chicken kabob I ordered was truly excellent and came with a garlic spread, a la Zankou chicken. Surprisingly super moist and succulent. The vegetables were fresh and the rice was very flavorful and fluffy without being greasy. They also gave a small piece of baklava for dessert. I love this baklava. It tasted homemade, not too syrupy sweet at all and I could have had a whole plate of it. One thing I like about Cypress is the amount of mom and pop hole in the walls and I am here to support them. I am thrilled to have a great ethnic place open up so close to home. Kerostena is good, but it just didn't have me jonesing to go back. I chose them one week after a very long spell and then Mama's the next. After trying Mama's, I was already thinking of how much I couldn't wait to have it again, which ended up being the following week. Each bite was so tasty. All the different kabobs were really tender and the rice flavorful. They are still hooking you up with the baklava gratis as of a few weeks ago, and the owners were quite friendly. It's definitely in an unassuming location, but that's the beauty of hole in the walls. While I still enjoy trekking down to Second St in Belmont Shore for Open Sesame, Mama's will definitely be stealing my business when I'm craving mediterranean stat. OH YESSS! The food here is ridiculously good!!! The falafel sandwich is worth every.single.penny!! Fries were PERFECT! Loved the fact that we were given free hummus and pitas with our order. We actually ate the hummus and pitas first because it would be easy to take our sandwiches home if we didn't finish them - - - but, we didn't want to waste any of the glorious food!!! There are a surprising number of tables in this little restaurant / cafe. It's order and pay style, you have to get your own drinks, but then someone brings your food to you. I only gave it four stars because while the food is cooked to order (thank you!!!), it takes a long time to get to the table. And that down time in the restaurant is compounded by the fact that the man at the counter (while being nice and friendly and sweet and smiley) is slower than you are used to at a place like this... I ordered "fries" and he said "rice?" (that happened two times before I said "french fries" and we got that settled). The line gets long.... we got there earlier than lunch time and that was best. If we had walked in on a line that went nearly to the door, we wouldn't have gone in. Also, tables pretty much disappear at noon. So much I could say about this place. All of it is good. I'm largely just reiterating all of the other yelpers. Thing is, it's all true. The food is amazing. Exceptionally tasty and surprisingly healthy. Reasonably priced at that. The owners are so warm and fun. Totally makes the experience that much better. It's a true mom and pop joint. If you like Mediterranean food (or even just good food), warm people with a comfortable relaxed atmosphere, you're going to enjoy this place. It's so nice to find places like this. I told the owner "you know you have a 4.5 star rating out of 122 reviews on yelp? That's hard to do!" He smiled and thanked me, but I know he had no idea what it meant. I see new businesses asking for people to review them on yelp. Then you find this place where the owners don't even know what yelp is and yet they have a highly impressive rating (well deserved at that). It's nice to find hard working, salt of the earth people rewarded for their due diligence. In a world of cancer/diabetes inducing fast food, served by cold and thoughtless people, Mama's Kabob stands out as a very welcome alternative. These nice folks really put a lot of care into their food and how they treat their customers. We've been coming here pretty often for several years now and I'm embarrassed that I've never written a review because it totally deserves it. They have a very simple menu and the food is very good. Every single time we've come, the service has been awesome and the food has been amazing. We were just saying how this is the kind of place you go to and you're never disappointed. I usually get the chicken Kabab plate. My husband has tried almost everything on the menu. Everything is great. The hummus and pita - we always take home a large order and if I'm particularly hungry, we go home with baklava for dessert. If you don't want to wait, call and place your order 15 mins before you get there. I ordered the combo platter, which is a skewer of ground beef, three pieces of shish kabab (premium kabab, I guess), and chicken kabab (tawooq). The chicken was seasoned well but was not super moist. Not dry, but not juicy. Still good flavors. The ground beef kabab (which some places call kofta or kafta) was pretty dry and was seasoned with Iranian saffron which I really don't enjoy. I wouldn't get this item again. The shish kabab was delicious and juicy. The sides were absolutely delicious. The garlic sauce (tohm, or tohmeya) was citrusy and delicious. The hummus was very creamy and flavorful. And the rice was so flavorful that I could eat it plain. It also came with pickled cucumbers and pickled beets. I don't like Arabic pickles (torshi), so I didn't touch it. Owner threw in a free cinnamon baklawa and it was surprisingly very good! I have to say...absolutely the best mediterranean food I've ever had AND overall one of the best food I've ever had. Top 25 lifetime for me. It is literally a "mom and pop" restaurant. They bus, cashier, and COOK like crazy! I ordered the lamb shank, wife ordered the beef kabob and my son ordered one of the other beef combos (forget the name) and there wasn't anything left on any of our plates! Seriously well seasoned food that was tender, juicy, delicious, and filling! We had hummus as an appetizer and I normally don't like hummus...yet, found myself eating half the appetizer scooping up the yumminess with warm pita bread. OMG...YUMMM! Get it...you won't be disappointed. It came with a side dish of pickled turnip and dill pickle slices. Must be a cultural thing cuz I didn't like either especially since they interfered with that perfect hummus! This joint will be added to my regular list of GO TO joints for dinner! Since it is only the husband and wife cooking you may experience a slight wait for your food , but, totally worth the wait IMHO. P.S. Came by to try the food here since my coworker told me it was really good. The fiancé and I ordered the chicken kebab (#1) and the chicken shawarma plate (#7) and the food did not disappoint! The owners are really nice and gave us free hummus and baklava for our meal. When my fiancé went to pay, he gave them extra for tip and the owner tried to give it back saying it was too much. I ordered small combo platter to taste a little bit of everything and lamb plate; both with salad and hummus. The meat was VERY dry, burnt and over cooked, not juicy as it should be. We came in around 7:30-ish on a Saturday night, never having been here before. Except for a large party of about eight and another party of two, the place was empty. Two people were behind the counter but neither glanced our way or acknowledged us. Unsure of the protocol, we seated ourselves and waited. And waited. And waited...watching to pick up clues about how things were done here. Papa was delivering wonderful looking platters of food to the two tables of diners, so we *know* we were seen - and we were absolutely astonished to be summarily ignored. Finally, one of us approached the counter and borrowed a menu from a rack, bringing it back to the table. We finally decided to do take-out, since we were still apparently invisible. Waited at the counter some more before 'Papa' - a man of few words - came over and took the order. About 15 minutes later I saw Papa waving in our direction; I supposed it to be an indication of a problem with our order or a signal that it was ready. In speaking briefly with 'Papa', it was learned that they work 7 days a week, 10am to 9pm except when they close at 5pm on Sundays.* When we got home, we were more than pleased with the order, the care with which it was packed and pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of THE BEST, HAND'S DOWN baklava I have **EVER** had. *Now, a bit of what I hope will be *helpful* critique for a clean restaurant with outstanding food: * A sign just inside the door reading "PLEASE SEAT YOURSELF; MENUS AVAILABLE AT COUNTER" would be helpful for the uninitiated. * An overhead sign above the counter at the cash register reading "ORDER HERE" would be mega-helpful for the uninitiated. * A bell on the counter to alert those waiting for take-out orders is respectfully suggested. And finally, I'm well-acquainted with the hospitality/restaurant industry and I know that a family run business is an all-consuming endeavor. One cannot necessarily take time off and remain fiscally solvent. This may help explain the 7-days-a-week schedule at Mama's Kabab and perhaps why Papa looked so bloomin' tired. (Neither Mama nor Papa are spring chickens and it made my heart ache to note no days of closure on their days of operation.) Bottom Line: we look forward to returning to MK now that we know the drill...and we'll be sure to express our appreciation to Mama and Papa for their outstanding food and amazing perseverance. read more
