This is solid diner food served with a bit of sass. It's right in Old Forney and is very busy at lunch. However, it's massive, so even if the parking lot is full, there are probably seats available so it's worth going in. They have a classic menu of breakfast and lunch options available at lunch. In our group, one person got breakfast, one got sandwich and soup, and one got an egg sandwich and hash browns, so kind of in between breakfast and lunch (but definitely not brunch). Plenty of vegetarian options. Food was tasty and filling, and free refills on Dr Pepper is always a good thing in my mind. Reasonable prices and fairly quick service even when they're busy means this place is A-OK with me! I would definitely go back for another visit and would recommend stopping in. read more

I love a good chicken-fried steak, and MDM has a great one! It doesn't look any different from the CFSteak at any good café, but it tasted fantastic! My fried okra wasn't necessarily the prettiest I have ever seen, but it was the tastiest I have had cooked by a non-family member. Same for all the sides. Nothing flamboyant or exotic here; just great renditions of all the dishes we grew up on in the south! Save room for dessert; the Peach Cobbler a la Mode is worth the drive to Forney!! Way overrated. Be sure to expect a long wait for food. $2.35 for a side of hash browns that were dinky. Biscuits taste like hot rolls and not a traditional biscuit. Basic white fluffy gravy (with bits of sausage) tasted packaged. Not the home made taste we were hoping for. They did remove the hash browns without us even complaining probably because our faces showed how disappointed we were and due to he incredibly long wait for our order. Complete fiasco Dumpster Fire. Ordered for delivery around 8:05AM and FINALLY got it OVER 2 FREAKING HOUSRS LATER!?!? The food was barely warmer than it was outside (it was about 18 degrees this morning). The wife's breakfast tacos were vile. The bacon was burned so bad it was almost charcoal. My Chicken Fried Steak was barely cooked through, the 'crust' was light tan, not golden brown and literally 'gummy'. The gravy was bitter sweet and odd flavored, Biscuits were so salty I swear they poured a pound of it in. I've had better from school cafeteria's and that crap is barely food! Grits were glue but at least the wife's oatmeal was just this side of wall paste; so guess that is good. Best taking thing was the packaged whipped butter. We tossed it all in the trash; wasn't even fit for our dogs to eat. Filed a complaint with the delivery service regarding the food quality. Based on previous experience, I doubt the establishment would even care, they are making money, that's all that matters. I made the mistake of taking my GF, whom is now my wife; to the one in Dallas some 5 to 6 years ago, was a dumpster fire then as well. I sent everything back to the kitchen after one bite and they had the audacity to make me pay for it then. My daughter and I were extremely happy to find this place. I wanted a chicken fried steak and finally found one that serves real mashed potatoes (sorry Babes) and also the okra and squash as well as the other sides were great! My daughter got the catfish and it was also very good. We ordered the pecan pie- good, the chocolate pie- okay but kind of a lot of gelatin, the strawberry banana pie, - okay I think it is better there due to it sliding off the crust by the time we got home but also I didn't taste much of the coconut filling, and the apricot fried pies- that was the best!! Went here my one and only time. Food was bland and cold. I asked for my vegetables to be very hot because I don't like eating them right out of a can but when they arrived either the server didn't pay attention to my request or it sat on a counter somewhere during the 30 minute wait from the time we placed our order until the time it arrived. No tea refills during this time either. My wife's meal included a salad that you usually get before the main meal but our server forgot and brought it after they delivered our meal AND had to go back and get it. I read the reviews which the majority were very good so I decided to try it out for breakfast. I give it 3 stars on because of the large portions served. I got a special. 2 eggs over easy, biscuits & gravy, sausage patties & grits. Food came out fairly quickly and waitress was efficient. Eggs were not cooked enough. I could see the runny white of one. Grits were Luke warm. Sausage was mediocre. Biscuits were excellent. Gravy tasted floury. Everything except the biscuits were under seasoned. If you are on a bland diet, this is the place for you. The only way I could get the gravy to acceptable was adding my sausage patty with grease to it and plenty of black pepper. Another reviewer had suggested nothing was fresh which is possible but I believe the cook is just awful. read more

I've had a jones for a real CFS breakfast lately. Too bad this wasn't it. The restaurant is cute and clean. It was busy. I thought, surely the breakfasts had to be stellar...I ordered the #1 with chicken fried steak and honey ordered the spinach and cheese omelette. I asked for my hashbrowns to be crispy (I'm thinking, slight crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside... No. They were so well done, the potatoes had fused into hard, inedible, impenetrable clumps-- at least some of them were. The rest lay pitifully on the plate looking like last year's leftover grass clippings. I tried to make the best of it by mixing my over medium eggs into the hashbrowns, but when I took a mouthful, all I could taste was old grease and cold eggs--two things I purposely avoid putting into my mouth at all times. I set that plate to the side, waiting for the server to return, and focused on the CFS. it was nothing special, thin breading and gristle being the predominate take away. Meanwhile, Honey was having issues of his own. His Taco Bell $1 burrito sized omlette was so completely immersed in rubber cheese, he couldn't eat it. Not a good breakfast day for us. I do have to give kudos to both the biscuits--fluffy and full of buttermilk goodness, and our server, who removed the offending hashbrowns and eggs from the ticket. I'm sad because in a world full of Waffle Houses and Denny's, I just wanted to find a place with solid, southern style breakfasts, without having to drive into Dallas. The décor is just as nostalgic as their prices, and daily specials. No worries of breaking the bank here. There are many dishes to choose from, and my choice of the day, was the Fried Catfish Plate. This dish includes an entrée, 3 sides, and bread. Dining in is the most popular, however, carry out is an option, and the option I selected. (while waiting at the bar for my take-out, with my mouth watering over the dessert display behind the counter, they offered me a free cold drink, and I accepted) Catfish Filet - 1 large filet, lightly seasoned, and fried to a golden brown crisp in corn meal is quite tasty. It pairs nicely with the provided tartar sauce. Mac -N- Cheese - medium serving, smothered in cheese, savory, and very tasty. Green Beans - large serving, requires quite a bit of resuscitation, unless you prefer beans straight from the can onto your plate. After adding a few dashes of this and several sprinkles of that, they were ok. Candid Yams - extra large serving, pops with cinnamon flavor, and it ends there. I'm sure there was an APB posted to the outside of the container for the missing sugar. After adding a few table spoons of sugar, these yams were A-OK. Breads - 1 corn bread muffin, baked to a golden brown, had to be jiffy with a little extra sugar, I know jiffy anywhere. LOL. 1 yeast roll, baked to a golden brown and buttered to a glistening shine. I am a repeat customer of Mama's. I moved away and visited them after a year. The place felt homey. The staff was warm, friendly and wonderful. Food was served fast and was very good. Coffee was excellent and staff was always available to provide refills. Prior reviews, I feel, are from when they were getting the establishment up and running. Until my doctor mandated a change in my diet, I was a regular at this restaurant. The service is good, local, friendly, and makes me feel like a citizen of Forney. The food is very good. It's cheap, fills the belly, and tastes a lot better than the low prices would lead me to expect. I feel like I'm paying for Waffle House and getting two stars better. Absolutely fabulous. Came here with a friend when we were just looking around for somewhere to eat. Staff is amazingly sweet and constantly checking to make sure you are well-fed, and have enough of anything you could ever need. Exceptionally clean, staff is fast and even on a busy day when you may come in, they are always going out of their way to make sure you're not waiting too long to find a seat. While it may get very crowded some days, it is always an amazing idea to stick around. The food is amazing, and as it serves breakfast, the waffles are a high recommendation. To finish up your meal, make sure you grab a piece of pie on the way out. All pies are fresh AND homemade, and you can taste that quality in the first bite.
