East side and west side - which don't talk to each other (2 of 2) I happened to be in this area on the east side (far, far east) and found this Italian restaurant - Mama Roberto's - that was open for lunch. I saw that the reviews were mostly good, but something on the menu was staring at me in the face: AGLIO Y OLIO I'll get to that part later. Between checking the menu prior to arriving and walking in to be seated, I got a feel for the lay of the land and how this might play out. They brought out a basket of bread, which was a larger knotted roll of garlic bread. You wouldn't see this in Italy. The bread would be far more understated. The salad was very good and substantial, with tomatoes and cheese as well as your choice of a few dressings. I then looked over the main dishes they had for lunch. A few seemed okay and they had the veal and chicken parmigiana and marsala. I was tempted to get the latter, but, with only one chicken breast, I ordered the lasagna, which was only found on the dinner menu. I should not have done so. As soon as it arrived, I noticed its presentation. It was a big slab of lasagna sitting in a sea of tomato sauce. This sort of presentation is Italian-American. It's not the more delicate presentation with less obtrusive pasta sheets that you'd see in Italy or in more upscale Italian restaurants on this side of the pond. I finished it off and it sort of bogs you down, such that you can skip dinner. The service was excellent. There is a "can do" spirit in the service. Since they aren't featuring Coke Zero, which I like because it tastes more like original Coke, they mixed up some regular and diet Coke for me. Let me talk about its decidedly Italian-American leanings. The word "mama" is something I noticed. New York had a long running Italian restaurant near the theaters named Mama Leone's, except that the literature and memorabilia also shows it as Mamma Leone's. Mamma is the bona fide Italian spelling. However, I'm sure that Italian-Americans might say, "I hope your mama is doing better" or "Your mama is a good cook." (Note that it is definitely not "yo mama.") America seems to have defaulted to this Jersey Shore Italian-American spelling. Now, let me get to "AGLIO Y OLIO." Do you put together a menu and not check your spelling with "real deal" Italian people? The "y" means "and" in Spanish! The correct Italian spelling would be "AGLIO E OLIO," which means "garlic and oil." What's also happening that many Hispanic cooks have cut their teeth at Italian restaurants that lean Italian-American and, if that's the case, then the food reflects that. Summing it up, Mama Roberto's gives you a lot of food, the prices are very fair, the service is customer focused, and the restaurant is pleasant and clean. On the other hand, the food runs on the heavy side, it is way more Italian-American, and they have the credit card use upcharge which is becoming more common as businesses shift this normal cost of doing business to their customers. It could have been that one of their meat, chicken, or veal dishes would have been a more manageable portion and been more to my liking. Perhaps one of the white sauce pasta dishes might have also been more up my alley. However, they should revisit their lasagna recipe and use another benchmark for both its looks and taste. I hated writing this review because Mama Roberto's is a mix of positives and negatives. If you are fine with Italian-American food, and lots of it, this might work for you. For me, Mama Roberto's is but a 3-star restaurant. read more

Take out only, which is a shame. When you could eat in, the food was so much better. I used to love the stuffed shells from here but lately, they are not great. You know what it is? The sauce. It's basically tomato paste and crushed tomatoes mixed, zero seasoning. Cannoli wasn't great, too much whipped cream and not enough ricotta. This place has traditional Italian American cuisine that boasts huge portions. We ordered takeout for dinner and everything was delicious. We tried the fried mozzarella (don't mind the missing sticks in the box) which had 4 pieces with marinara sauce for dipping. The fried mozzarella were absolutely massive and very stringy with an excellent cheese pull. I would get these again they were that good. For the entrees we tried the famous chicken Parmesan which was huge and could easily have leftovers. The chicken was fried to perfection and had the perfect cheese to sauce ratio. That entree came with a side of penne Alfredo which was a small uncharged but was totally worth it. My partner tried the shrimp Alfredo which they really enjoyed. One key tip is that they give complimentary salads with Italian dressing so don't order a side salad. They also provide fresh bread and their garlic knots so don't order and extra one. Let's just say I learned these lessons from this past visit. You do get a lot of food for the money and it is great to see a thriving family run restaurant serving up delicious food with huge quantities. You won't be disappointed coming here. read more

The food tasted reheated and all noodles were overcooked. The salads lettuce had begin to turn and the soup was ice cold in spots like it had been frozen and not reheated all the way. The entire staff has long hair that is not in a hairnet. Sure enough, while eating my salad, after working two jobs all week and excited to relax, I find a super long hair wrapped around my salad. Always great fresh food and excellent service. The only pizza in Northeast Ohio that has a crust that you can make a meal of - crusty and sweet but not too sweet. This is a cute mom and pop restaurant. The staff was great, super friendly and personable with their customers. But they have flavorless food. The tomato sauce tastes watered down like it came from a can. The Chicken Marsala is missing the Marsala flavor. I'm pretty sure they use beef gravy instead. And the bread that is served with your meal has so much potential. It would be good if the chef used garlic and seasonings. It's almost as if they only cook for folks in a nursing home. read more

Patty was very rude on the phone. I placed an order and I was very kind. I assumed based on the tone of the person on the other end was a female, thus using "ma'am" for good etiquette. Mid-way through ordering I was corrected with "first off I'm a man". To which I responded, "how am I supposed to know that over the phone." I finished the order and promptly asked who the employee was, then I had got my answer. This was not a nice way to treat a paying customer over the phone. I heard Mama Roberto's use to be really really good back in the day, but now it's more mediocre-ish. The inside looked like your average joe pizza joint with checkeredd table cloths and random stuff all over the walls. My food came out pretty greasy, a little too greasy actually. I'm not too much of a complainer so i sucked it up and ate it anyway. Don't be too concerned about the prices because the portions are HUGEEE. Their sauce here? no jaw dropper really. The pizza on the other hand though is actually pretty damn good lol. All in all .. Mediocre service, mediocre food, and great pizza. Nothing's really super fresh, made from scratch type of ordeal. OMG......I don't know the last time I had fresh linguine with white clam sauce. I usually get the canned stuff, which isn't horrible, but........ The sauce has a nice, light flavor. TONS of clams. Not overly garlic or salty. The pasta is just tender, which is the way I like it. I got a salad and garlic knots with butter with the pasta. Those are for later. LOL. Mama Roberto's is my absolute favorite restaurant! The chicken marsala is fantastic, big mushrooms with marsala gravy. The chicken parmesan is really good! I love the three cheese tortelloni with pesto sauce. My son loves the fish sandwich. A great salad, garlic knots and bread with butter come with the dinners. The servings are huge and priced right. We have done catering for special occasions and individual meals, usually twice a week. The pizza is great! The calzones are awesome! The family is so nice every time I come in. This place used to be better about 10-15 years ago. I've worked in Italian restaurants growing up, I know how calzones are supposed to be made. The calzones here are too much on the doughy side. More bread than the filling. It should be baked thin and crispy like a pizza pocket sandwich if you will. I tried the spinach ravioli here and it tasted like it was microwaved and it made me feel queasy the next day. They still have their $3 plate sharing charge. The lasagna they make is enough for 2 people so they got you there. My brother wanted to try the lasagna and he took the rest home and couldn't finish half of it. He had to keep asking for extra sauce because they hardly put any sauce on top of it and it kept soaking in and dried the whole thing out. The waitress rolled her eyes every time he asked too. I have never tried their pizza here but if it's as doughy as the calzones, I may not try it. The cleanliness of the place is good, I'll give them that. The Olive Garden is industrial and cookie cutter but I would say some of their dishes are actually better than some here. TJ's is a better choice for a good Italian meal but even they have jumped on the bandwagon of raising prices but keeping the portions and menu the same. Did I mention there are good amount of dishes that don't come with a salad and they charge $5 for a side salad? I don't get how this place has made Fox 8 a few times over the years. Didn't they get hosed on social media and Facebook for how they treated this one lady's experience there who had cancer and came in with an oxygen tank? This is coming from (2) Southern European people a Sicilian and a Greek. Nothing in town beats this restaurant. If you haven't tried it you are missing out big time. I'd trade a huge portion for higher quality food any day. I was dragged against my will to Mama Roberto's for Sunday dinner with my family. If you're looking for good Italian food in Mentor, you'd be better off going to the Olive Garden, honestly. And that ain't saying much. Yes, my side salad was good. Yes, the greasy garlic balls that are complimentary were good. But my entree? It was huge...but it was almost inedible. I got pasta with spinach, the biggest mushrooms I've ever seen, a red sauce, covered with a half pound of cheese. Individually, any one of those ingredients might have been ok. But together? Not good. I feel like at most restaurants, if something is bland, if you throw cheese on top of it, it'll taste ok. Not here! I don't know what kind of cheese they used, but it couldn't save the dish. I didn't want to insult the person in my family who "loves" going there, so I pushed around the food on my plate and picked out the mushrooms and ate them. If it hadn't been for the salad and bread I would have been pretty hungry, though. I don't venture out east all that often, but I'm sure you can find better pasta just about anywhere else.
