My wife and I came here with a couple of close friends I've known since middle school - almost 40 years. My buddy's wife found the place. Great call! We let the chef decide what we were having, which was a bit more adventurous than I usually am. We were not disappointed. The food was really, really amazing. I'm not sure I've ever had a pork dish that I enjoyed as much as the one we had. The pasta was great. The salad contents were a little weird, but whatever. When your only complaint was the salad, you're doing OK. The restaurant was beautiful, and the staff was great. Everyone was very nice, but our waitress was particularly pleasant and seemed intent on helping us have a fun experience. Mama herself came to our table and quickly realized that we were amused by her wisecracks, so she kept coming back. She was cranky in a very fun way, if you can imagine. Dinner was a lot more expensive than I expected, but I am definitely glad we tried the place with our friends. We will be talking about that dinner for a long time. Each bite was literally better than the last. We started with the prosciutto bread and eggplant agrodolce. I'm not a fan of eggplant so I passed, but the bread - amazing. I can very confidently say that Mama Catena's is not only the best Italian restaurant in Cleveland by a very wide margin, and one of the best restaurants in the city full stop. Typically, I do their "PIATTO ORBO" experience, which allows one to try a fantastic variety of dishes. It has become my go-to reservation whenever I have friends coming from out of town. When I don't do the full blind plate order, however, I rotate between lasagna or Sunday sauce, always with a pepperoni bread appetizer. Beyond the food, the atmosphere of the restaurant feels like you are in grandma's kitchen, not only due to the warm decorating and family photographs along the walls, but also because if you are lucky, mama herself will come meet you in the dining room for a lively conversation. This is the rare restaurant that sometimes I almost want to gatekeep, afraid I won't be able to get reservations there if I share it too much. Everything was just "ok." Service was great, but the food itself we all felt was just "ok." The starter bread was very good, but then it took awhile for our order but it was very busy. The place is small and it was very loud inside. I got the clams and red sauce with fettuccine, the kids got fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and my wife got meatballs and the red Alfredo sauce. Server came us asked us if we wanted wine said no took the wine glasses we asked for diet. We never even realized a great little place like this existed. How could that be? Pastas came with a very nice salad. Everything fresh and tasty. I enjoyed the Pepe e' Cacio entree, properly peppery and cheesy, but light. Big chunks of pancetta made this a treat. My wife really enjoyed the huge bowl of Sunday Sauce over rigatoni. What a gem! I absolutely love this quaint little place. You'd never expect the food or service based on the location which is in an unremarkable little strip mall next to a convenience store. The staff was very warm and friendly. Everyone is knowledgeable about the dishes and everyone cooking them are family! The food is cooked to perfection and with love. There's a nice wine selection but no alcohol otherwise. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner and hearing heartwarming stories about her and her late husband with whom she founded the restaurant. This is the best food that we have had at a restaurant in a very long time! Why did I not know about this place before??!! It is located in an unassuming plaza in Euclid Ohio. When you walk in it is Shocking when you see the elegance of the dining room. it is not something you would think you would find in Euclid. This place has been on my places to visit, ever since I read in CLE magazine that Chef Michael Schoan said it was one of his favorite places to eat Italian food. So 4 of us stopped by for lunch. We each got something different - to taste and share. And we all raved about our food! My husband got the lasagna and our friends got the Rigatoni with sausage and Rosella sauce and Involtini which is like a pinwheel filled with cheesy goodness! I got spaghetti but I did not want a marinara sauce so I asked if they had other sauces so the server told me about the other four sauces they offer. I opted for the Sicilian oil and garlic. Simple and delicious! The owner, Mama was there and visited our table twice to check on us and tell us about herself and her restaurant. We will definitely be back! The garlic bread and bruschetta with red wine was a great start to the evening where we chatted about the venue and brides maid dresses. I ordered the eggplant and the server was very nice to explain. My daughter highly recommend this restaurant and it lived up to the hype! We were in town celebrating her graduation. We ordered the "Blind Plate" which basically means the cooks creation. Three course option which consisted of a charcuterie plate with meats, cheeses, nuts, olives, (see pictures). Main course was steak, grilled pepper, pan seared pork & gnocchi. Dessert was a chocolate covered Ice cream ball cut 4 ways with strawberries drizzled with chocolate. The staff who are almost all family were warm and welcoming made us feel right at home. I used to eat here a couple times a month when I worked in the area I was going to meet a friend for lunch, so I was excited to go back. The heavenly focaccia basket was delicious. I asked the waitress about the menu as it looked nothing like what I saw online. I ordered some chicken soup and a meatball stuffed sandwich. The soup was ok, it wasn't overly hot and at $7, I thought it fair. The meatball Sammy came out. I was hoping it would have been like the focaccia, but it wasn't. The meatballs had 0 texture. My husband and I had gone their right after it opened up and I can give a list of things that were wrong with this place. Initially my husband had message and called a few times asked me about reservations and they had said that they had absolutely no openings until I went in myself to ask them if I can make a reservation for later that evening and they said that they have plenty of space available and that they would be able to put me in. The waiters and waitresses there looked like young children and it showed in the way they were serving. Let's begin with why an Italian restaurant didn't have black pepper. I mean there is a convenience store right next door that they could have walked over to to grab some black pepper and my husband and I were looking for some for the extremely bland food that we were eating. The waitress stated there weren't any at all and we couldn't believe it. My husband assumed that the waitress didn't know what he was talking about so he went on to explain that it should come in a shaker and there are Italian restaurants that actually give you black pepper freshly ground. She went to the kitchen and came back and stated we don't have any at all. Neither one of us enjoyed our food. My husband also ordered a bottle of wine there and the wine ended up being corked wine. We had told the bartender about this and instead of bringing us a bottle that was equivalent in price or less he decided it would make more sense to bring us something that was much more expensive. 3 of us went out for lunch on Saturday at 2 PM. I had two appetizers and a Caprese salad. All three were delicious.
