Had Mama Kim's on my radar for awhile thanks to all my fellow Yelp buddies posting about this place . I ordered their 1 choice spicy poke w/Sushi rice and my wife had their Salmon Sashimi over sushi rice . Their fish is fresh but the sushi rice you hardly can taste the sushi vinegar it was ok . Parking is a challenge I'm not sure if I could park in the municipal parking behind the building of Mama Kim's so I just parked in the metered stalls. Their poke bowl comes with 3 free sides which was a great extra touch . I ordered crab salad , Kim Chee and Tamago . Had the spicy mayo salmon poke and Hawaiian ahi poke which was delicious. Paired it with some yummy crab meat and edamame with cucumber. The service was quick and pleasant. The store itself is small and unassuming, but everyone greeted us with a big smile. Would definitely return. read more

I don't know who Mama Kim is, but if she were my mama, I certainly wouldn't be mad about it! This lady (I'm assuming she's the owner) and her daughter have the poke bowl game dialed in! Not only do they offer fresh poke bowls and sushi hand rolls, but they also serve Specialty Bowls such as Salmon Ikura, Chirashi and even Kimchee Natto Poke! You can also create your own bowl with their variety of proteins and toppings. I initially heard about them by stumbling upon their IG page. They say that you "eat with your eyes first" and their fresh-looking fish and poke bowls had me drooling all over my iPhone! They're located on S. King St. in the Kaheka Professional Center next to Longs Drugs. It's a small hole-in-the-wall with parking available in the back or metered street parking, so bring your coins! This is primarily a take-out place, but they do have a few tables outside. I had called in my order and it was ready upon arrival. I ordered the Salmon Skin hand roll for $5 and the Seared Salmon bowl for $13. They were very generous with the salmon skin and I wish I had ordered two rolls! The seared salmon bowl was amazingly fresh and delicious. The salmon was mixed with Garlic Aioli torched on top with Garlic onion sauce, Green Onion and Unagi sauce. So flavorful! If you are looking for a japanese style poké bowl place this is a great spot. Mama Kim's has a great selection of poké bowls with efficient and excellent service. It has a small interior, but does provide some inside counter seating with addition outdoor tables. During my latest visit, I ordered the Spicy Ahi + Hamachi Sashimi bowl. Ridiculous poke bowls, though a good 30m walk from Waikiki. We had the Red Dragon and Mauna Kea bowls, definitely in the pantheon of bowls we've had. Everything very fresh and perfectly seasoned and sauced. Even this miso soup was quality. While there are four bar-like seats inside, they also have several outdoor tables. Service is super friendly, and bowls came out fast. Lots of locals coming by to get their weekly+ fix! read more

We ordered the #1 Mama Kim's Sashimi Salad. It is basically a hoedeopbap, a Korean raw fish bibimbap. It also comes with a sesame salad dressing. The fish portions felt small, like it was only one piece each of yellowtail, salmon and tuna chopped up. I had high expectations for this place because of all the great reviews, but maybe we should've gotten poke instead. read more

I'm a fan! The food is delicious, service is quick and friendly. There's no parking so you have to hope for an open spot on the street, pay the meter and run in. The menu has a wide choice of selections from torched bowls to fresh poke and handrolls. Their specials change weekly and sometimes include uni, hotate, ikura. I stick to the torched bowls. The salmon one is my favorite. I had a salmon/ scallop combo but didn't really enjoy the tiny scallops (I prefer them big and sashimi grade). You really have to eat this the same day, my leftovers were a bit fishy. They have $3 small sides of kim chee in their fridge and they sell fancy Japanese potato chips! I tried the ube latte and it was just milk with ube syrup so I'd skip this next time. For some reason I thought it was a coffee drink. First stop when we landed on the island. The pokebowls here are good portion and flavors of poke was to die for. It also comes with a small miso soup that was a good starter. My friend really wanted to do Mama Kim's which was a short drive from her work at the University of Hawai'i! So I agreed to meet up having already eaten. Upon meeting up and entering we noticed how small the place was. Small, yet efficient in having several cafe tables just outside and three stools and a counter. Menu easy to read and efficient employees. It was a drizzly day and we lucked out with the counter being empty. Most orders are for takeout so that's a big reason. Small yet cozy it was a nice spot for casual chat. My friends ordered Seared Scallops and Salmon Okura bowls. I told them I just ate but they insisted I eat again lol, so I agreed to get something small since they were treating me. I decided on a Cali Hand Roll and Yuzu Iced Tea. My friends both ordered Plantation Iced Teas. In the end, I recommend Mama Kim's for those who love Poke and seafood. A small local business that just does it right! Mama checks all the boxes! In particular, she was searching for chirashi bowls, and we discovered Mama Kim's via Yelp. Let's just say it was love at first bite. This place is KILLER!!! We've picked up lunch from MK's just about every week since, and I don't see us slowing down. The quality is *chef's kiss*. My wife has consistently ordered the deluxe and regular chirashi bowls, which she loves, and I've tried several of the other specialty bowls, which have all been soooooo good. SO GOOD. The cooked/seared bowls are also hits. If my wife and I are feeling extra hungry, we like to split a seared salmon bowl, which is topped with a garlic sauce that perfectly matches the seared flavor. I really hate giving such a poor review but our experience was terrible and this place is seriously overhyped. - The sushi rice is mushy and not seasoned right - The quality of the fish was just ok - The poke is seriously lackluster and flavorless - The hamachi jalapeno was way too overly saucy - The cucumber salad (side that comes with bowl) was just sliced cucumber and had zero yuzu flavor as advertized - The spicy hamachi handroll was also drowning in sauce The kicker was that I paid an extra $5.50 to add ikura to the chirashi bowl, and they forgot to add it. I had to go back to ask for it and the guy put such a tiny dollop on the bowl that I gasped. There are much better options. read more

A pretty solid spot for some fresh fish. Stopped by and ordered the shoyu ahi and shoyu salmon poke bowl and chirashi. The fish was very fresh and the sauce on the poke was delicious. The tuna was slightly less smooth/more oily and the salmon less of the melt in your mouth texture than what I've had in the past, but they were still quite good. Ohhhh yes! Let me first start by saying that my appreciation for poke and sashimi has really grown in the last year due to a special someone in my life that has influenced me. This is my third time here and I love it. I'm constantly on their IG page drooling over the food porn. I love that they post their daily specials there and offer online ordering that makes it super convenient. Do order early as they can get busy towards lunch time. You can order from their menu of bowls or customize your own. I've had their Red Dragon bowl which had shrimp tempura, spicy ahi poke, crab salad, and unagi over sushi rice. That was absolutely delicious! The other times I selected a bowl then added side order selections to it. Street parking or park in the back lot where there is a 15 minute grace period. Sorry Mama Kim's! In my first review, I raved about having the BEST cucumber Kimchee l ever tasted, I got from my niece & went back soon after finishing off the first container within 3 sittings. To my disappointment went back that week & cucumber was out & cabbage kimchee was available. It was good but, my taste buds we're hooked on your style cucumber kimchee. Sat Feb 17, 2024 called to verify if cucumber was available. It was! Drove from Kaneohe & picked up the last two containers from the display refrigerator. Soonie K (owner) to my surprise, the cucumbers we're over ripe & mushy. Your chili sauce is thick, red & flavorful & my first container the cucumbers were cut perfectly into small appetizing cubes.Please check your quality control, cucumbers were spoiled to begin with & while the sauce was a litttle off, the cucumbers we're cut in larger cubes ( like the kind you get in the supermarket). Horrible customer service. I went in to pick up my online order, employees up front were surrounded by one employee looking on that persons cellphone. They did not greet when I entered the establishment. Attached is my online order. I ordered the Firecracker BOWL and noted ADD GREENS - NO RICE. Firecracker Bowl Description - Two Shrimp Tempura over a Spicy Ahi and on a bed of rice. Picked up my order and reviewed it. I noticed the GREENS salad was missing. I notified them and they said "WE MADE THE FIRECRACKER ROLL BECAUSE YOU SAID NO RICE AND ITS IN THE TO GO TRAY." After explaining what I ordered which was a Firecracker BOWL, substituting the rice for green salad, the young man transferred the phone to another person. The young lady said "WE PUT EXTRA GREEN ONIONS. WE DON'T QUESTION CUSTOMERS. WHEN WE SEE GREENS WE CONSIDER THAT GREEN ONIONS." The website allows you to add on, which Green Onions was under the Firecracker Bowl and I would've added that if that's what I wanted right? I'm sorry, you assume the customer orders? Instead of simply calling the customer to verify? Also, remember the young man said "WE MADE THE FIRECRACKER ROLL BECAUSE YOU SAID NO RICE", well that BOWL is $14.00 compared to $6.00 for a roll. They shorted me on the spicy ahi since they ASSUMED it was a ROLL and not BOWL. I would considered this place to others, but I will no longer patronize this establishment. Shhhh, I HATE poke bowls. The only thing that goes with poke is beer. Don't even get me started on mixing mayo with raw fish, YUCK! So why Mama Kim's? Chirashi. Inari bombs. The "Orange Dream Bowl" (sushi rice topped with thick slices of salmon sashimi, snow crab, uni, ikura and a raw quail egg) takes you back to the alley restaurants of Tokyo's Tsukiji outer markets. Simple chirashi heaven. Customized variations subbing in whatever is arriving fresh always an option. Sometimes hamachi, others, Hokkaido scallops or chutoro. Maybe splurge and ask for half and half uni and ikura. The Hokkaido uni and ikura inara bomb is, well bomb. Simplicity at it's best with the age's sweet seasoning making the creamy uni and salty ikura sing. A less expensive non-Japanese uni option is available that is nearly as good. Poke bowls and some hot cooked items served over rice also available. None sampled. Tip: follow on IG for specials and arrival dates for ingredients. Simplicity taste great. Nuff said. read more

Mama Kim's is an absolute underrated gem. I'm almost hesitant to write this review because I want to keep them all to myself but alas, I must share the good news with the world. This restaurant is completely unassuming, but holds the freshest donburis ever. The food here isn't strictly Japanese, as there are Korean and local Hawaiian touches to their dishes, which makes it all the more unique! You can find poke bowls with natto, kimchi, okra, yamaimo and more here. They have a constantly changing specials menu, which is very exciting as well! My bf and I have gone here twice already since we discovered them recently. I ordered the Chirashi bowl twice and asked for an onsen egg on top (LOL). It was legit the best combination ever! I was delighted with how fresh and how THICK! the sashimi pieces are!!! They are sooo generous with their sashimi that I didn't even have to worry about my rice to fish ratio!! Seriously, the quality and freshness was unparalleled, especially for how regular this place looks on the outside! My boyfriend ordered from the specials menu once, and got the Red Dragon bowl. He enjoyed both as well. Our favorite thing is getting takeout from Mama Kim's, then driving 6 min to Ala Moana Beach Park to enjoy on the beach while watching the sunset. I finally got to try this place one day since I was in the area. They aren't open till late so it's a little hard to get it for dinner. I decided to go down and place my order instead of calling ahead. There was so many choices but I finally decided on their salmon ikura bowl and I also got their yuzu ice tea. I wanted to get some of their side dishes but they were all sold out. The wait was kinda long so next time I'd definitely call ahead. There was a ton of phone orders they were trying to make when I was there. Also, parking may be a little hard to find. I luckily found a parking on the street around the corner of the place. The salmon ikura bowl was a lot bigger than it seemed. It had a good amount of fish and more than enough rice. I thought that the fish tasted pretty fresh. Mama Kim's is a great establishment for higher end poke. Our experience was via Uber Eats and it was the perfect cuisine to get delivered. Prices are on the high side, but seemed fair. Their portions are generous. I ordered the Crunch Bowl and a few hand rolls. The Crunch Bowl was delicious: spicy ahi, crab salad, and shrimp tempura over rice with unagi sauce, wasabi and ginger. Basically a spruced-up poke bowl. Their spicy ahi is ground, which I actually really liked. It was just spicy enough. I found their portions of both the crab salad and spicy ahi to be great. My only complaint about the bowl is that the shrimp tempura does get a bit soggy sitting on the rest of the meal. For the hand-rolls, I ordered the spicy scallop, which was fantastic. I would probably order their spicy scallop mixture as a part of a bowl on my next visit. In addition, the california hand roll was added for free as a part of the Uber Eats promotion. The poke was fresh, firm, and not overpowered by their respective sauces. The tamago was eggy and bright, the seaweed salad wasn't overly salty, and the cripies added crunch. The crab salad was a refresher from the other flavors with just the right amount of mayo. They have a few places to eat inside and outside. No bathroom but they take American Express.
