Malka is a refreshing take on familiar Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes, the flavors are hearty and healthy using quality ingredients and premium olive oil. The environment is lively and service is attentive keeping water glasses filled. The leek pizza, smashed baked potato and maitake mushrooms were particularly memorable with freshly puréed vegetables garnishing each atop or as an encompassing sauce. The meze platter was beautifully presented with fresh cut vegetables drenched with olive oil and flaky sea salt, but could've included more falafel as there was just one patty. The menu is very accommodating toward all dietary restrictions, however, one warning I will mention is that this place is pricey--for a party of 9 vegetarians ordering two items per person plus a drink, which was just the right amount of food, our bill came out to $850. Cute kosher spot right off the 72nd station! Highlight is def the unique descriptions on the menu, give it a read you won't be disappointed! Came for a quick dinner and drinks before the ballet and it was satisfactory. The garganelle was good, beef tartare was alright, and the radicchio salad was refreshing. Nothing was really memorable like the descriptions on the menu, but bonus points for having such a fun vibe! Drinks were both okay too. I think everything is also a tad overpriced, but that might be due to the kosher certification of the restaurant. Based on the crowd size, I guess my review will be somewhat out of the ordinary. And I should've done my homework before I came with a friend. disappointed, weird, not yum pushy waiter, When I ordered hummus, he told me he must tell me that there's no bread that comes with it so I said how come ? And he answered me the hummus is so delicious. You can just eat it straight with a spoon and then when I said I'd like bread, I was charged eight dollars for a 3 x 4" of something bread like. We had nothing that we liked at all. The two pasta dishes were tasteless. The hummus was OK and we had a mystery dish that was like a very thin crêpe on a piece of parchment. We called waiter over to ask the method of eating. at that point he took a spoon to show us how to eat it. Put the spoon in the enter of this flat tasteless concoction and spoon it out toward the rim. doesn't make sense does it? A little tasteless food on spoon. All extremely weird. The table we ate at was extraordinarily long. 2 of us, way too far to comfortably talk. Obviously people crowd to this establishment. Been wanting to try this place for awhile and finally went recently. We sat outside on the terrace which was a nice quiet vibe and what we were looking for but I would definitely go back and sit in the main dining area another night. We got the artichokes, focaccia, bruschetta, roasted broccolini tree, potato carpet, roasted branzino and of course the schnitzel. Everything was delicious! The focaccia doesn't look like much in photos so I almost didn't get it but i'm so glad I did because it was delicious! The potato carpet was my favorite thing of the night. It had a beet horseradish, horseradish aioli, schug, and coarse mustard seed and the flavors melded together so well. We went on a Saturday night and it was CRAZY loud. Most of the restaurant was taken up by a large party of young men who were singing along, whooping it up, and dancing in the aisles. We were initially seated just under one of the large audio speakers which was untenable so they gave us a table at the front. Even so my husband had to put in earplugs. The vibe was fun but conversation completely impossible. We were told the atmosphere was typical for a Saturday night. They don't have a vestibule or anything to keep the cold from blowing in each time the door opened so there was that as well. Food was all delicious but went cold quickly. I agree with others here that the hummus is good but not outstanding (although my daughter thinks it the best) and really should come with bread. The bread of the moment is challah, and we had to pay for two slices which came with a tahini dip but which were not enough to scoop up the hummus and various sauces under our other dishes. Our cocktail was served in a glass filled to the brim with crushed ice which made it watery and nearly tasteless -- and certainly not what I wanted on a chilly winter's night. Hard to understand how an expensive restaurant that prides itself on serving the best doesn't know enough to use a single oversized cube -- unless it is to hide the fact that they are hardly pouring anything. Service was fast and we were out the door quickly. Between the volume and the cold there was no reason to stay for dessert and we were glad to leave. Again, l agree with others here who note the place provides poor value -- except perhaps if you keep kosher and have limited options. read more

My party of 4 was disappointed with Malka, particularly given the high prices (our light dinner with no alcohol was over $200). The family style approach was poorly executed. Many of the dishes were difficult to share. For example, a large rectangle of focaccia came in one giant piece so we had to tear at it to get a manageable portion, leaving the remaining focaccia a mangled mess. It was also nearly raw in the center. We also ordered a "potato carpet" which was served as a blob of textures on greasy parchment paper. We had to awkwardly slide portions of the slop on our plates, making a mess of our hands and the table. We also requested that our salad be served without raw onions but that was not adhered to and they had to remake it. The server went through the menu in too much detail and didn't pick up on our non-verbal clues that we were overwhelmed and getting bored. After at least a 5 minute monologue we had to cut her off. On the more positive side, the 2nd version of the winter salad we ordered was delicious and unusual. And the potato carpet was tasty, despite how hard it was to eat. I wouldn't go back, which stinks because I love creative Israeli food. read more

I was looking forward to my meal @ Malka for a special celebration but I was disappointed. The mezze platter was basically raw and slightly marinated vegetables with a single falafel ball for $31. It was not worth buying. We ordered a couple of hummus bowls. OK, the hummus was good but overpriced. Furthermore, the bowls did not come with pita bread. The only bread available for dipping was a small focaccia bread which had to be ordered separately for $8. I've never before been to an Israeli restaurant that did not include bread with a hummus order and the $8 for this side of bread was absurd. I ordered the chicken schnitzel plate. The schnitzel was good but also overpriced @ $51. Furthermore, the plate had a big scoop of mayonnaise included. I thought this was tehini and I slathered it on the schnitzel. I was disgusted when I realized it was mayo. I've been to Israel many times and I've never seen anyone eat mayo. This was really weird and off putting to include on an Israeli style schnitzel plate. My wife ordered a hamachi fish dish as her main entree. She said it was good but it was so small it could barely be considered an appetizer, let alone a main dish. Our friend also ordered a different hamachi fish dish that was the size of a thimble. For dessert we ordered a couple of slices of pie that were also overpriced @ $15 a slice. I understand there's a premium on kosher food and Malka is owned by a famous chef. Still, I found the food wildly overpriced, the food average and the portions very small. I left feeling that I spent a lot of money on a meal that wasn't worth the price. There are better kosher and Israeli dining options. I won't be returning to Malka. read more

Snagged a reservation during hanukah which was honestly amazing. The service was good and while I really wasn't a huge fan of the menu the wife loved every minute of it. I found the dishes to be imaginative, albeit extremely expensive. All the flavors were fantastic and had a decent amount of seasoning. The dj kept the music going and the crowd happy. People were dancing at the end of the night they came around with shots of Eyat and we all toasted. Would recommend to my Israeli friends and those who enjoy kosher Israeli food. read more

As an Israeli, I was genuinely looking forward to dining at this much-hyped Eyal Shani restaurant. Sadly, it had very little to do with the Israeli hospitality I know. In Israel, especially during the holidays, guests are warmly welcomed and fed promptly. Here, instead, we were seated near the entrance and essentially ignored, while the manager ' launched into a long and performative monologue -- not addressed to the diners, but delivered passionately to the staff about the meaning of "Rosh Hashanah" (which he even mispronounced). The whole moment felt oddly theatrical and self-congratulatory. Even more ironic -- it happened just before Yom Kippur, a holiday not meant for pompous speeches, but for sincere reflection and humility. As for the food, it was not representative of traditional Israeli cuisine. * The "meze" was not a selection of varied salads, but rather a beautifully arranged board of raw vegetables with a single small spoon of hummus and baba ghanoush. * The humus was Ok, not extraordinarily at all. Very expensive and without any bread to dip it in. Strange. * The schnitzel with potatoes was very good -- no complaints there. *. The drinks were not cold, mediocre, and expensive. All in all, for the 160$ spent, I cannot recommend this place. I will not return. Pretentious. Inauthentic. Disconnected from both Israeli spirit and Jewish meaning. Just wrong. read more

Dinner at Malka was a fantastic experience. We had planned for a wonderful family evening and turned into an incredible experience. Chef David, Staff at the Bar and management made our evening one for our memories! The Hummus with Lamb ragu is a must and the Hriame fish and Fish Shawarma are delicious. We had high expectations for Malka, and in the end, the evening did not really meet my expectations. Almost all of the tables were grouped to hold big groups, we were first sat upstairs by the service & stair/bathroom area but luckily there was one other 2 top at the front of this balcony over looking the entrance & it was a fabulous seat. I may not have even stayed if seated at the first table. On a rainy Tuesday evening at the end of 2/24, the space was filled by 5:30pm..and bustling. The staff is young ! and busy. While everyone was polite, and our particular server spent time with our wine choice & general questions, we did not feel any attachment or love for the ambiance. Eager to have an Israeli wine, we were disappointed to see the 2 bottles that I would consider affordable on the small wine list were a Savion Blanc from New Marlborough & a 375ml red from Spain, were both 55$. We went with the 2021 Jezreel Valley red for 99$ although if you look on the website even today it is listed at 79$. The wine was fabulous, and I am thrilled that I can find it for under 30$ at home. (you can see the wine list from 2/27/24 in the photo's and see that now, a week later it is a totally different on line) The menu is unusual as you may have read. A very Israeli Hummus is offered, but it was explained to us that because this was a bit more upscale than street food, it did not come with pita to dip, but there were 2 choices on our evening : Golden Focaccia or A Bread Bag which was challah. We passed on the bread and thankfully decided on the delicious Nostalgia of an Old City Mezze that included raw red onion, assorted veggies, a falafel "burger" (so much for avoiding street food). The most fabulous Malka schnitzel filled with mashed potato marrow could have been a chicken cutlet done at any decent restaurant, not what I would expect to pay 41$ for in my wildest dreams. 18$ would be fair (you can see in my photo that the tiny dollop of sides can vary, there was nothing red or beet like on our board and the slaw/cubed items were tiny in comparison to earlier photos. The Green Garlic Pasta was a wide delicious ribbon that appeared undressed but had a delightful & delicate flavor, ok to hare as a small side. We passed on dessert. Slipped out barely noticed in the commotion of the evening. While I am very happy to have finally dined at Malka, a mere handful of blocks from work, I would not return unless I was perhaps someone's guest. read more

Malka is a great new kosher restaurant on the upper west side! It's the first kosher restaurant I've been to that also has a great dj and nightlife aspect! The waiters were so friendly and made sure to check on us often and explain any dishes we had questions on. The food was delicious and there was great variety on the menu! We ordered the white and green everything salad, broccolini, hummus with lamb, rib eye steak, and the chraime. Highly recommend this spot for a fun night out. They also have bar seating. read more

Maybe 3* - but some parts were 5* Another eccentric Eyal Shani restaurant. The food is mostly very good - many dishes would rate 5*. I especially like the hummus with lamb ragu. And the schnitzel is great, and unlike most other dishes, a fair sized portion. Most of our table liked the regular hummus. I did NOT. It was heavy on Tehina, and the chickpeas on top lacked flavor - could have been from a can. And the portion was small. The okra and salad greens were also great. The steak was tasty, very well prepared, but somewhat fatty. It was also a good size portion, even adjusting for having to trim away. a lot of the fat. And there was nothing to dip the hummus in - the only bread, a small piece of foccacia, came out 30 minutes after the hummus. Shani should have something to dip the hummus in - a few vegetables? Anything?? Desserts were good - a crumble and some sort of pistachio cake, but portions were again small. Prices were high - but not all that high for a good Kosher restaurant. Service was obnoxious. It is also a very noisy place - but I think the noise is driven by the clientele. And quality, like Hasalon, another eccentric Shani restaurant, was uneven. The food is classic Eyal Shani - simple and fresh ingredients cooked perfectly. As Richard Vines, (restaurant reviewer for Bloomberg) says, "simple but epic." I'm always a fan of a good schnitzel but Malka's was on an entirely different level with juicy chicken and stuffed with mashed potato marrow inside the most perfect schnitzel crust. Forget what you think about your savta's schnitzel - this will blow your mind. The drinks were also simple with 3-4 ingredients but perfectly crafted and uniquely delicious. But I think one of the intangibles about eating there was feeling like you were being treated by family. The staff seamlessly blends into the restaurant - all wearing their own clothes - and every person that interacted with our table felt like they were taking care of their own family. This was an interesting dining experience. Loved the energy inside, it was a casual vibe yet the food was trying to be sophisticated. The menu was printed in computer paper, which at first I thought was tacky but then I realized it's because I think they change the menu daily depending on the produce. They have a lot of vegan options. The salad was excellent, fresh, and light. The fig dish was stunning and simple, apparently the figs were fresh from the farmer's market that day. The focaccia was tasty but really small. They served it with tahini, which they mentioned was in a bowl underneath the platter it was served on, but we forgot to lift the platter off and didn't realize until they were taking away our food. So we never got to try the accompanying tahini. They claim on the menu the hummus is really special. It was, but we could not place the additional flavor- maybe a spice, or fava beans? To be honest I did not enjoy this, and it was served with spicy sauce which is too much for me. It also did not come with any bread or vegetables to eat it with. We had to eat it with the focaccia which was definitely not enough. The pistachio cake was fantastic, great texture and flavor, but it was served with no garnish and cost $14, which feels like a lot for a plain slice with no icing. Im a firm believer in everything Eyal Shani related. Loved the schnitzel so unique and made perfectly. The steak was in of the best kosher steak I've had. The beets are always my go to and the hummus is to die for. Yellow tail was so fresh and paired really well with that sauce. Turned my brother into a fan! The short rib tasted amazing but was tough. (Server acknowledged it was a "tough cut" but did not mention in advance.) Entrees do not come with ANY side dish, just meat on a plate, so factor that in to your order and the price. Wine and cocktails were great. Dessert was very good. Note: mousse does not come with whipped cream, they do not have any, but was very good and shareable. Totally packed on a Monday, which is great for vibe, but is a reminder to reserve. read more

This was one of the worst food experiences I've ever had. I hate admitting this to an Eyal shani restaurant. They bring you out hummus and expect you to eat with a fork, no pita. They don't warn you to order, what they call "Focaccia" ( this is not foccacia it's a hard crispy piece of flat bread). The schnitzel is ok, chicken is dry. Table next to us complained that their chicken was raw. The worst part of the meal was the dessert. We ordered the brownie that was hard as a rock. A group of women next to us came for a birthday, birthday girl spit out brownie out of her mouth the second she had a piece and then proceeded to playing drums with their brownie. Having been to the former Miznon and enjoyed it, this was our first time at this iteration of basically the same restaurant but now Kosher. The menu is in the same precious format and warrants too many questions for a server to have to answer. We ordered our wine, noting that it was much cheaper to drink by the glass than order a bottle which is not usually the case. As a double date, the four of us took the pens they provided and marked up the menu with what we thought we might want. It was difficult to judge just how much to order as some dishes, later described by our server, are enough to share and some are a couple of bites. We figured it out with the help of our solicitous server. We ordered the focaccia, eggplant, green beans, broccolini, schnitzel, and humus with lamb ragu to share. First came the bread and then one after another the rest of the food. The pacing was much too fast and we felt rushed as the table ran out of space. Next time I would order a couple dishes at a time to slow things down. The humus was the last thing to come out and sure enough there was no pita. Other diners have pointed this out. Seems odd. We asked for bread and they brought us challah wrapped in foil packets that were chilled as if coming straight from the cooler. We decided to follow the dessert recommendation of our server which was the pistachio cake. The cake was a bundt with candied orange and very moist. We had a lovely evening together with delicious food despite some details being off. This is definitely a hot spot in the neighborhood so reservations are sparse. Wonderful dinner overall!! We had the focaccia with tahini, hummus, yellowtail sashimi, lamb kabob, and pasta with red sauce/fish (can't remember the fish). All delicious! The hummus was light and fresh, and the lamb kabob was so good!! The ambiance was really nice and service was great! Our waiter was really nice and helpful in answering questions. I think they have a few kinks to smooth out since they just opened which I'm sure they will in time. Definitely recommend trying out! Bonus tip - if you have the Amex Platinum add it to Resy. You have a better chance of getting a reservation with Global Dining Access, and Priority Notify which gives you priority notifications when a reservation pops up. Amazing Israeli food! Yes, the restaurant is crowded and can be noisy, BUT the food is simply amazing. A very helpful server comes to sit at your table to assist with the ordering process- to go over the menu, item by item, and to help your party figure out what to order so that everyone leaves sated. The food is served family style and comes out dish by dish as the dishes come out of the kitchen. We had the broccolini (the horseradish sauce is to die for), the hummus (someone in our group didn't want lamb so we skipped the lamb hummus - will have to try it the next time), the mushroom pasta (delectable), the fish schwarma (delicious- but probably the weak link in the evening) and - the piece de resistance- the short rib, a melt in your mouth dish that was nothing short of perfection! Worth every yummy bite!! Desserts are tasty but nothing special - it is a kosher, pareve restaurant after all, but finish with a glass of fresh mint tea and you'll leave feeling very happy and well fed! read more

We have really enjoyed Malka in the past--the inventive food, the whimsy, the community aspect. We have taken guests there and made it a regular on our eating calendar. But we made a reservation recently for the "kitchen counter" (which we have so enjoyed before) on a Sunday night. We were seated at our res time, sat there with menus in front of us for a full 20 minutes without any acknowledgement of our presence. Not an offer of a glass of water, not a "would you like to order a drink?" People walked by us, people looked into our eyes but nothing. I tried frequently to hail a server as they rushed past. Nothing. Finally, we stood to leave, which attracted a bartender, who just shrugged when I explained why we were leaving. The hostess apologized and asked to seat us and take care of us herself, but we said, "too little, too late." The worst part was that she said multiple times, in explanation, that they were JUST SO BUSY TONIGHT. This is not a valid excuse for a restaurant to use. If your restaurant is too busy to provide normal service and hospitality, then you are understaffed, unprepared, and should not be taking reservations. There is a commonly-used expression in business which says, "your failure to plan is not my emergency." Since that evening, there has been no outreach from management since we abandoned our reservation, which I hoped there would be. I'm afraid that, for us, this is a dealbreaker in a town with plenty of welcoming places to eat. read more
