This spot is fantastic! Talk about large portions, full of flavor, and a menu with so many options it was hard to decide. As a first time patron with more visits to come, every dish brought to our table was beautifully presented (various sushi rolls), huge bowls (poke & chicken and mango salad), bento boxes and more. We were a small group and everyone ordered something different and yet everyone raved about the quality and how delicious their dish was. The service was wonderful too. For a smaller restaurant will full service and takeout, the staff checked in for refills and to make sure we had everything, but was otherwise doing other tasks. They were easily available to flag down for anything we needed. With large portions came take home boxes. Finishing our food the next day was still very fresh and kept well. Meko Ramen is a smaller spot located in the corner area of the shopping area. The restaurant is fused with a sushi restaurant as well, so you have the option to order both ramen, sushi, sashimi, and Japanese plates a la carte. The restaurant is smaller for a fast casual dine-in establishment and during the summer with no AC this place can get hot (Especially if you're eating ramen)! . I ordered a Beef Brisket Ramen, and if you're an avid ramen lover, I would definitely avoid. The broth came out thin and watery - not rich of flavor. The broth was almost so watery that it had a tap water taste. Extremely strange. The noodles are good along with the portion size, but it's hard to get through a dish that's dependent on the broth for flavor. The brisket itself wasn't brisket I was expecting. It was more along the lines of shredded beef and the protein portion wasn't large for my protein lovers out there. Newer Ramen restaurant in the Target Shopping Center. It's an order at the counter but looks like dine in the food is brought to your table and on real plates. I ordered to go but definitely plan to return for dine in. I ordered one Ramen bowl and one sushi combination to share with my husband. It was more than enough food and we some Ramen left over for lunch the following day; reheated very well. The food was packed very well. The Ramen broth was separated from the contents. The sushi combo included Spicy Tuna, California Roll, and Crunchy (shrimp). Very fresh and made while I waited. I ordered the Beef Ramen. Beef was very tender. The menu stated it had red Chile so we were expecting some spice or kick to it, but it waa on the bland side. Also, the egg (whole egg, nice) was hard boiled not soft boiled. This place is a pretty much a total miss now. The staff looks completely different from what I remember last year, so maybe that has something to do with it. They did expand the menu to include sushi offerings; I believe that part of the issue is that they went totally overboard and now there's so many things on the menu and most of them don't taste good or have weird combinations of things thrown together. My Chirashi sushi bowl was literally served in a plastic takeout bowl. There was nothing in it but fish and rice, some toppings wouldn't have hurt. The next visit, I got the poke bowl, and they plated it better, but there was no sauce in the poke, or any of the basic toppings people have come to expect. In fact, it was more like a sashimi salad. My wife's bento was pretty bad. In it, she also got a side of plain overcooked ramen noodle which was not edible. Salmon was bland. The ramen seems to be the only thing that is still okay. My boys ate it up fine. The servers are nice, but pretty clueless about the menu that they can't even articulate what's what. They really need to dial-in the menu and go back to a winning formula with basic offerings that they can stand behind. Mako Ramen is conveniently located right between two military bases -- it's also right near the 405 exit making it a terrific spot to grab quick lunch or dinner if you work in the area. The service is always prompt and friendly. There's no snarks, attitudes, negotiating for a bigger table, etc. The menu is actually rather extensive. It offers both ramen, sushi, bento boxes, and appetizers. I just wish their gyozas aren't deep fried. The ramen itself is delicious. The aburi chashu gets seared fresh right before serving and not ice cold like the ones from Tsukemen Tao. They won't dump some slabs of fridge meat in your soup I promise. The soup is not very salty and actually rather light even if you get something typically heavier like tonkotsu based soup. I attribute that to where the owner is from. Makoto is from the Western region of Japan and their soup stocks tend not to be overly salty, sweet, or heavy. It reminded me of what my relatives from the Western side of the island prefers. I appreciate that very much given how salty and oily the soup can be elsewhere. Parking is also free and the restaurant offers military discounts as well. I see myself going back when it's convenient, but I won't go out of my way to come here. Umami seafood ramen: I think the pictures from Yelp gave me the impression that it was going to be a thick broth, but I was sad to discover that it wasn't. Nonetheless, it's a good bowl of ramen that does not have the porky taste that seafood enjoyers avoided when ordering this type of ramen. The broth had a salt base that kept the umami without the fatty feel, and it was nice to enjoy on its own. It had a fair amount of seafood, and the noodle portions were good. Chicken Karaage: I liked it a lot. A light battered juicy chicken karaage sounds easy to do, but many ramen shops overthink and mess up. The choice of serving it with Japanese mayo and a sour sesame sauce on the side was interesting since restaurants tend to only do one sauce per dish. I appreciated the choice offered, and I still think the Japanese mayo is hard to beat. The salad was fine, and I wish the chicken pieces were bigger. Pork Gyoza: This one is a bit disappointing. It tasted like package gyoza bought from a supermarket. Deep frying the dumpling also did not help the texture. The thick peanut based sauce was okay, but I don't see myself getting this again. Service: It's good. I went during a non-busy hour so the staff didn't have a lot in their hands, but they made sure I had water, and were proactive. Ambiance: A nice shop that seats just under 50. Picked up food for my daughter. She ordered Spicy Miso Tonkontsu. I have one big issue with this business, so I asked to talk to the manager and the employee said she doesn't work Sunday. Her name is Monica and I need her to respond this review. Although the food was great, they charged me double tax. Basically, I paid 18.50% tax! The employee told me, he had no idea why that was, but it happens on all orders. This is not legal and must be addressed. Spicy garlic edamame was good compared to others. Got half a sushi roll. Which for the most part their rolls are their typical ones you find at other places. I was really excited to finally try Mako Ramen, but the entire experience was a total drab. I visited at a time when the restaurant was completely empty, yet the customer service was still horrible. The waitress was so preoccupied talking to her coworkers that I was essentially ignored; my drink sat empty for most of the meal, and she had a nasty attitude as if my presence was a waste of her time. As for the food, the fried gyoza tasted like nothing but fried batter with no meat, and the beef brisket ramen was so sour that I could hardly taste any of the other ingredients. I've had my fair share of ramen across the country and even internationally, so I have a pretty high standard for what a good bowl should be, and this just didn't hit the mark. Classic Tonkotsu ramen had smooth, flavorful broth without being too salty. It came with chashu, woodear mushrooms, red ginger, green onions, egg, and bean sprouts. Spicy Sweet Cold Ramen was excellent. This was a great dish to have on a hot day like today. It's dry, chilled ramen with slightly spicy sesame/soy based sauce, served with chashu, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, shiitake mushrooms, bean sprouts, red radishes, egg, bamboo shoots, and spring mix. It's basically a ramen salad. The noodles were very al dente, which is how I like it, although may be little too firm for some. Portion was good on both. Came with my wife and daughter and we could barely finish our dishes. We ordered some appetizers (Karaage and Glazed Brussels Sprouts) but ended up taking those home because it was too much food for us. For a casual, semi-service restaurant, the service was really good. Staff members were friendly, enthusiastic, and attentive. Food: Fried rice - half size is a great portion and can be easily shared - it was flavored and delicious. Gyoza were fried and partially open on the bottom side. They were hot and fresh and crunchy. Shoyu ramen. The broth was extremely flavorful and it came with lots of toppings (meat, green onions, bamboo, half egg)that made it richer and plentiful. Big deep bowls of noodles. Miso ramen - has ground meat in it and mushrooms and various topics. The miso broth was great. Noodles were plentiful. Tonkatsu with wavy noodles - broth was thick and rich. Lots of noodles and excellent toppings. Red kimchi - SO GOOD. Comes in little to go tubs. Service needs to tighten up but they are new and getting their feet under them. We were missing a dish that never came out and it showed up on the bill still - they removed it with no issue. One of the five bowls of ramen came out with watery diluted broth - they switched that very quickly. We left there stuffed and happy. We will return. I'll start by saying the service here is fantastic, and the table set up/ambiance is similar to the place before. When we walked in we didn't realize it was a sit down where someone comes at takes your order. The food was just ok. The gyoza was pretty good and we liked the dipping sauce it came with. The noodle dish my husband got was really basic and the broth tastes like chicken broth and that's it , and the pork was not good; we were expecting a bit more. The Katsu was decent, but the rice was cold and the salad dressing tastes more like vinegar and less of ginger. We'd be willing to try this again and order different ramen to see if the flavors are there. Two tables after us received their food and were eating before I received my food. Mind you, I'm 6 months pregnant and just ordered ramen. I was getting a lot of mixed messages from the other Yelp reviews. Some customers thought the broth was too bland, while others thought it was too salty. So the great mystery was revealed when I tried my ramen. My son thought it was fine, but my broth definitely lacked the richness and the flavor that I normally expect in ramen. It was not too salty, but the degree of saltiness was not the issue. True, it may not have MSG, but it's missing a whole lot of other things too. What was also surprising was the copious amount of ginger strands in the bowl. I never expected to find ginger bits in my ramen, so I viewed it as a rogue ingredient. What I did like about my ramen order was the seared pork. It was perfectly prepared and I like the cut of the meat--not too fatty nor too lean. Service was pretty awesome. There was only one server that I could tell for all the tables, but he was efficient and seemed to be able to be everywhere at the same time. The indoor dining area was comfortable, but the multiple fans blowing from the ceiling made some tables too cold for me. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the ramen here was, given that it was located in an area with not so much authentic Asian food around. It's definitely my new go to spot when I'm looking for a quick ramen fix in my area. I've had the regular and spicy tonkotsu and shoyu. I'd recommend either of the tonkotsu though, because the shoyu broth was way too salty and greasy for me. The spicy tonkotsu is actually pretty spicy. The noodles tasted handmade, and I loved that they were thin! What also sets this place apart from others is that they actually char their chashu pork, which I love since it adds a smoky flavor to the ramen. Overall, it's not the best you can find in the OC but it's pretty good so def worth a try if you're in the area! read more
