Makkee (麥記牛奶) specializes in "freshly-made sugar water" (鲜作糖水), which means Hong Kong-style milk desserts. The lid literally says "natural sweet" (自然甜), and my wife and her friend would agree that's accurate. The desserts aren't overly sugary, which I really appreciated to avoid diabetes risk. The staff were quiet and the seating arrangement requires some creativity and first come first serve atmoshshere. We tried three bowls: Makkee Deluxe: Grass jelly with red beans and peach gum in oat milk. The grass jelly was smooth, the peach gum was chewy, and the milk was creamy but lightly sweet. This was my favorite. Plus the lotus seeds tasted fresh and taro balls were chewy. Taro Ball Grass Jelly: This is a surprise with its Red beans that gives you a good bite, sweet potato/ taro balls, and grass jelly in milk. This bowl had lots of texture, and each bite was a little different. Both my wife and her friend loved this one. We ordered at a self-serve kiosk (English available), then grab our food at the pickup counter when your number shows on the screen. It was busy with a line outside when we came, but it moved fast. The place is clean and cozy with warm lighting, and it had an A grade in the window. Portions are generous, and prices felt fair. Tips: 1) Great late-night dessert stop. Goes well with binging tv-shows or gaming with friends over LoL. 2) Try anything with grass jelly. I would Most definitely come back!
Quite disappointed with the service here. We arrived around 7 PM on a Saturday and went to order at the register, but were dismissively told to use the kiosk instead. When we simply asked why we couldn't order at the register, Andy responded with an eye roll and made us feel like we were asking an unreasonable question. The store is already very small, and forcing everyone to order at the kiosk created an unnecessary crowd by the entrance, making it difficult for people to enter, leave, or even sit down. I understand having certain ordering procedures, but there's no reason to be dismissive toward customers for simply asking a question. Absolutely uncalled for.
Enjoyed my dessert here - the Makkee deluxe and the generous helping of milk on the side! It just takes a while to order on the 1 iPad. They have cute to go packaging too.
Solid, trendy dessert spot to visit for anyone who prefers desserts that lean toward balanced sweetness rather than sugar overload. What makes the shop particularly interesting is the way it bridges traditional Chinese dessert culture with the modern Asian dessert scene. The desserts are especially appealing for their contrast in textures - creamy, chewy, soft, juicy, and crunchy elements often come together in a single bowl. Rather than relying solely on sweetness, Makkee builds its desserts around the interplay of ingredients and textures. Watermelon Coconut Qing Bu Liang is one of the most refreshing menu options. It is a refreshing, fruit-forward dessert. The watermelon gives it a juicy, clean sweetness, while the coconut milk makes it creamy and tropical. The taro balls and mini rice balls add that satisfying mochi-like chew, and the red beans give it a slightly earthy sweetness. I enjoyed the added crunch from the coconut chips. Makkee Deluxe, another recommended menu option, combines many of Makkee's favorite toppings in one dessert. It tastes creamy, lightly sweet, chewy, and refreshing all at once. The fresh milk gives it a creamy base, while the grass jelly contributes a subtle herbal flavor and the red beans add sweetness and a slightly earthy taste. What I particularly enjoyed was how the dessert never became cloying. While the desserts are enjoyable, the portion sizes feel somewhat small relative to the prices. If you dine in, the dessert will be served in a bowl, whereas the dessert will be served in a cup for takeout orders. The dessert cup was filled to the brim, leaving no room to mix the dessert.
Wanted to try this place since I've always seen it in Rowland Heights. Small dessert shop in the plaza with Chicha, Mian, etc. We ordered a Makkee Deluxe, which comes with alot of healthy asian ingredients! I do like how the desserts generally taste pretty healthy. I like how it also had this clear jelly (not sure what it's called), but it was pretty floral tasting. The taro mochi balls (?) were also nice and chewy. Everything was pretty fresh. It didn't take too long for our order to be prepared. Although, for the price of this, I feel like it's kinda pricey for what it is. Compared to Meet Fresh, I think you get a lot more from Meet Fresh, but this one tastes a little healthier.
I have been noticing this place a month ago even before it opened. Luckily, I happened to find out where they finally opened. They had soft opening last weekend where they had BOGO 2nd one 50% off. There wasn't too long of a line but there's a wait to get the food. I think I ended up trying 5-6 items. Out of the ones I tried, I like the watermelon quian bu long. It's refreshing, not too sweet and taste different from the makkee deluxe. I also enjoyed the purple rice a lot and I got one on the side. The mango dessert with little tapioca balls are good. The mango is not in season so it's a bit sour. Otherwise, the makkee deluxe, peach gum with milk tastes similar. Unfortunately, you order at kiosk and you pick up your own dessert after. The place is small but looks modern.
I love traditional Chinese desserts. This is one of those herbal dessert place. It's a healthier option when you are craving sweets compared to other desserts. Not saying it is absolutely healthy, but you feel less guilty eating this than say ice cream. Service was good. This spot is new so it's pretty clean. There's a few tables here so it's not too big of a space. I definitely enjoyed trying out different toppings. All of them were enjoyable and similar as it's a combination of different toppings. If you're not familiar with toopings like lotus seed and peach gum resin, I recommend the taro coconut sago.
Really disappointing experience. I ordered a dessert that was $14.74 before tax, which is already pretty expensive for a dessert dish. When ordering, I specifically asked if I could replace the tapioca with grass jelly. The cashier told me they couldn't substitute it, so I said that's fine -- please remove the tapioca then add grass jelly instead. He then told me I couldn't do that either, which was confusing because it does have toppings mix and match in their menu. I had to ask again "why I can't just pay extra to add grass jelly?" before he finally told me yes. So I paid extra for the grass jelly and specifically asked for NO tapioca. I got the order to go, brought it all the way home, opened it... and there was still tapioca in it. It's not even about the extra charge. If you're charging $14.74 before tax for one dessert, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the staff to pay attention to a very simple request, especially when I went through the trouble of explaining it multiple times. The whole ordering process was unnecessarily confusing, and after all that, the order was still made incorrectly. Very frustrating.
Taste 10/10. Representation 10/10. My friend who is the grass jelly expert complimented the grass jelly there. Definitely recommend to everyone about this place
Best Cantonese dessert place in SGV. Will try the whole menu. Same as the Makkee in Rowland Heights. Limited seating inside. Service is quick and kind. Large free underground parking
I went to their grand opening weekend, and of course there was a line and a bit of a bit wait. I've been to their Rowland heights location and fell in love with their desserts. I got the makkee deluxe, my go to order. Their ingredients seem like good quality and very refreshing, not too sweet. I like to add extra ice since I like my dessert cold cold. So excited they have a second location!
Great getting a branch of Makkee in the West San Gabriel Valley after their first two US branches in Rowland Heights and NorCal. Their soft opening focuses in the dessert side, with their milk teas to come later.
Black sticky rice mango (5/5). The rice is perfectly cooked and mixes well with the ice and mango. So glad they have a location in 626 so I don't have to drive to Rowland just for authentic Chinese desserts. Will be back to try their seasonal menu. Highly recommend!

So glad they opened in SGV. This branch is a bit smaller but you could actually get a seat here easier than their bigger branch. Their ice snow series is a must try. Got the taro black sticky rice today but will definitely get their mango one next time knowing that they use Philippine mangoes read more

This is such an amazing dessert spot! We've been huge fans of their Rowland Heights location, so we were really excited to try this one as well. This time, we tried something new--the tapioca pearls with coconut milk. It was completely new to me, and I loved it! It wasn't too sweet, tasted light and refreshing, and the texture of the tapioca pearls was so satisfying. The Peach Gum Lotus Seed dessert is one of our favorites and something we order almost every time. It's light, delicious, and a great option when you want something that feels a little healthier without sacrificing flavor. I'm also glad to see that this location offers some different options, which gives us even more things to try next time. So happy to have another location to visit! Congratulations on the grand opening! We'll definitely be back! read more

This tastes better than other desserts spots in the SGV area. Not too sweet. I could taste every flavor. I especially liked the purple rice which added a nice chewy texture to the dessert. The mango was pretty sweet, though I have had places that are sweeter. The shaved ice and ice cream was creamy and the vanilla flavor was smooth read more
