This is a cozy, smaller spot in Irvine that hits the mark for both speed and flavor. The food comes out quickly without compromising on quality. I love that they offer a salad and meat option if you're looking for something lighter than a full plate of rice. The portion size was perfect for me, but if you have a larger appetite, I'd definitely recommend adding a few sides. Highly recommended for a satisfying, fuss-free lunch or dinner!
Curry Sauce: Good Chicken Cutlet: Good Cheese Sauce: Pass I've never heard of Maji Curry in name, but with a descriptor of Award Winning Japanese Curry, you kinda get the feel that you gotta give em a try if that's their specialty. The interior is small with limited capacity under 25 or so people. They have bar and table seats to accommodate medium sized groups, but our group of 3 was able to be seated with little wait. I've had my fair share of curry, but not very often do I experience it with a cheese sauce. I decided to be a lil adventurous and jump on that cheesy bandwagon. While aesthetically pleasing and fun to pour on top, the sauce itself was very grainy. Once cooled, it was kinda gross if you dip your cutlet in it since it had a clumpy mouthfeel. Not ideal.. Got standard spice level and regular rice size, but if you customize you can choose larger rice portions or spicier levels. Overall for me, the curry flavor wasn't super memorable as I don't find myself craving it again. I'd rather make it myself from the curry cubes or go elsewhere lol. If I had to return, I'd pass on the cheese sauce.
Small but clean restaurant. Service was friendly and prompt. We got the hamburger curry, beef curry, and the chicken katsu curry. Everything was delicious. Curry is slightly leaning towards sweeter side. Hamburg was good but very small. The beef curry was a little chewy. Not the melt in your mouth beef im used to from curry house. The chicken katsu was the best. Perfectly fried.
I'm a huge fan of the curry sauce here. It's a small store but the service is still relatively quick. I usually get Level 5 spice paired with a lot of the sweet/tangy pickled veggies in the jar. And.. by a lot, I mean I devour the whole jar and would want to ask for more. The rice is sometimes unevenly cooked. The meat is as expected, really... it's a curry shop, not a katsu bar -- so i'm there for the flavor and carbs .
I tried the Pork Cutlet with Cheese, and it did not disappoint. The cutlet was crispy, perfectly portioned, and not oily at all -- just the way it should be. The curry itself was a perfect balance of sweet and spice (we went with the standard level ) -- not overpowering, just comforting and flavorful. The curry sauce is more on the sweet side, compared to Coco Ichibanya, which has a more salty profile. Therefore, this might be a hit or miss depending on your preference. Loved that you can customize your rice & sauce size: * Small: 220g rice / 180g sauce * Medium: 300g rice / 250g sauce * Large: 450g rice / 350g sauce A hearty, satisfying meal that hits all the right notes.
Maji Curry is the kind of place that sounds impressive just from the name. I heard it won awards in Japan and was even called a national curry champion. I came with high expectations, hoping to taste authentic and rich Japanese curry. The restaurant is small but cozy and the moment I walked in I could smell the strong curry aroma, which made me hungry right away. I ordered their signature beef hamburger omelette curry. The food came out quickly and looked appealing. The omelette had a golden color and the curry sauce was thick and glossy. The beef hamburger looked solid on the side. The first bite was promising and I could tell the curry sauce was homemade and not from instant curry mix. The spice balance was good, and the sweetness of onions and vegetables blended nicely. The aroma was rich but not overwhelming. A spoonful of curry with the soft omelette rice was impressive at first. However, the problem became obvious quickly. Aside from the sauce, there was almost nothing with any real presence. The omelette was thin and the rice a bit dry. After a few bites it felt like all that was left in the bowl was the curry flavor. The hamburger, though it looked thick, was a bit crumbly and lacked juiciness. It did not have the firm texture you expect from beef. The exterior was a little dry and biting into it did not give that satisfying release of juices. Halfway through, the bowl felt like curry soup poured over plain rice. The flavor was strong and comforting, but the overall experience felt empty. The curry sauce is excellent and full of depth. You can tell it was made with time and care. Unfortunately, the rest of the dish did not match the sauce. The beef hamburger barely stood out and the omelette rice was dry, so toward the end it felt like the curry was the only thing keeping the dish together. The portion size is small and the price is not cheap. For what you pay, the overall satisfaction is not very high. If you are just looking to try the award-winning curry sauce, it is worth a visit. If you want a filling, satisfying meal, you might be disappointed. The service and atmosphere are good. The staff are polite and the food comes out quickly. The restaurant is clean and cozy. The tables are close together and it can get a little noisy when crowded, but the overall vibe is relaxed. After finishing the meal, I still remembered the aroma of the curry. It is truly delicious and distinctive. The problem is that the dish feels like something is missing. The sauce is the soul of Maji Curry, but the rest of the dish does not match it. If the omelette rice were softer and the hamburger patty more substantial, this curry would feel much closer to championship quality.
What I Ordered: Hamburger Steak Curry with Cheese ($17.80) Chicken Cutlet Curry ($14.50) Omlet Curry with Pork Cutlet + Fried Prawn + Beef ($26.25) Extra Curry ($3.25) Chicken and Fries ($4.95) Cream Pasta with Corn Soup Set ($11.25) Food: I was so excited to try this curry spot because they won the Japanese Curry Championship Competition multiple times. I tried the curry with multiple toppings, but I NEED to talk specifically about the curry sauce. The curry had a consistency that was thicker and a flavor that was much bolder than other Japanese curries. The level 2 spicy level had a small kick of spice but was honestly the perfect level of spiciness when mixed in and eaten with the rice. As for the toppings, my two favorites were the Pork Cutlet and the Beef. The pork cutlet was thick and full of meaty flavor, and I loved that it did not have any bad meat smell that is often found in bad quality meat. The breading was also incredible, which added the perfect amount of crunch with each bite. The beef was cooked perfectly, proven by its soft and tender texture. I ty[pically do not get beef as my curry topping, but this is the one place I would choose the beef (assuming that my fried gets the pork cutlet and we can share!) It was my first time experiencing such high quality toppings from a curry specialty restaurant. The Hamburger Steak, Chicken Cutlet, and Fried Prawn were good as well, but they weren't as memorable as the Pork Cutlet or Beef. The Cream Pasta with Corn Soup Set was surprisingly pretty good! I would say the pasta is a good dish to order if you don't like curry and your friends forced you to come here. The Corn Soup was quite decent too, a well balanced combination of sweet and savory. The Chicken and Fries came with their chicken karage and fries. A decent choice if you like chicken karage. Staff: The staff members were all nice and friendly. They checked in with me multiple times throughout my meal, making sure I was taken care of! Ambiance: Mainly inside seating with a few seats outside. There is a table top with a good number of seats and 4 tables across the restaurant.
I've come here twice with friends and can say that this is a pretty solid curry spot, especially when more popular places (like the one in DJ) are bound to be filled up in the evenings. It's also pleasantly nostalgic for me personally, as there used to be a Curry House on this block. The first time, I had the karaage curry. The second time, I again had the karaage curry but with the omelet add-on. Both times the portion amounts were just right (albeit a little bit more food than I can handle), and the flavor was pretty rich and delicious. One note is that I really recommend getting the standard spiciness if you're sensitive to spice (I find hot Cheetos spicy), and even then I could definitely feel the spice building over time. Overall, a nice and standard curry place with comparable prices - I wouldn't say it's my first choice just because I'm a Japanese curry enjoyer, but the servers are super nice and personable, and the restaurant also has nice dessert options nearby (Wanderlust creamery and Omomo), which makes this a good place to hangout with your friends too.
I very much enjoyed the Large Pork Cutlet Curry spice level 2. Next time I go I will get the next level up in spice since level 2 was relatively mild for my palate. The plate is pretty simple - scrambled eggs laid on top of a bed of rice with chopped deep fried pork cutlet on top surrounded by curry. I really liked this dish and like I said earlier would want an even more kick in spice level. Great job in service as well as our needs were catered to very well!
It was a quick in and out! Fast and considerate service- I don't know if they usually do this but we said we were going to share a XL pork cutlet and omelet curry between us two and server gave us a small extra curry sauce bowl on the side! Who doesn't like more curry sauce?! Loved the flavor! Only downside is that the pork cutlet was on the drier side which the extra sauce covered it up so you can barely tell. The place is very small so the ambience can be very quiet so if you're looking for that quick and quiet meal- go here!
incredible japanese curry!!!! you can customize add-ins. the base is super warm, eathy, and welcoming. i loved the eggplant added in. portion was v big, lasted 2 meals. lots of seating inside but it was also very busy. i would def recommend. casual sit down vibes inside read more

MAJI Curry has been on my radar since it opened up and I was also so curious to see how it is compared to Coco. Luckily my boyfriend and I were able to give MAJI Curry a shot since there were no lines. Upon entering the restaurant, I did notice that is a bit small so, it's def hard to cater to big groups in there. My boyfriend and I both ordered the Omelet Curry with Pork Cutlet. I also ordered cheese on the side. The pork cutlet was so good, juicy, tender. It was cooked to perfection and wasn't dry at all. Comparing to Coco, I do like how they cook their meat here better. The curry was also flavorful, but I wish it was a bit thicker. It was separating so it didn't look as good as it tasted. The cheese was just alright, I would skip it. Overall, my boyfriend did like MAJI curry over Cocos and I would say it's a pretty strong contender against it. The service was great. The servers were very attentive and made sure we were doing alright or if we needed anything throughout our time there. The food was amazing and I def will be coming back. read more

My friends and I arrived around noon on a Sunday. It was busy but was still early enough to where we only had to wait around 15 mins to be seated, which wasn't bad. Because of the limited seating, it is pretty cramped inside. I enjoyed the eggplant curry I got. Eggplant was cooked well. Good portion of rice. Curry was not as heavy as other curry places and wasn't as rich in flavor. Was more just savory. I tried some of the cheese sauce from one of my friends and it adds a nice salty bite! read more

There are plenty of parking spaces. They have limited indoor seating, so sometimes you'd have to wait for a spot to open. I ordered the Pork Cutlet with Cheese and Fried Chicken Karage. You can select your option of spiciness, toppings, and whether you want extra rice or curry. The Pork Cutlet with Cheese was okay, the cheese honestly didn't make a difference whether to have it or not. The curry was good, slightly spicy even if it was mild. The pork cutlet was okay, it was a bit dry and bland, but you'd definitely need the curry as a sauce for the pork and rice. The Fried Chicken Karage wasn't crispy and didn't taste as good. I really love Japanese curry. In the area, Coco Ichibanya is my favorite, even though they are so hyped. I wanted to love Maji Curry because it's incredibly close to where I live, and right next to my favorite boba shop. However, I just wasn't wow'd by their food. Since I had my dogs with me, my friends and I ordered take out and ate at the seats right outside. So, to clarify, despite my photo being in a to go container, I did eat my meal right away so there should be no concern that my review is of a meal that was eaten long after it was prepared. I had heard of this restaurant winning rewards, so to be fair, my expectations were extremely high. In my opinion, the curry itself tasted different from what I am used to. It didn't taste very Japanese to me -- perhaps a hybrid between Indian and Japanese. Note that I have been to Japan twice and have eaten Japanese curry all over Japan. It just wasn't what I was expecting. Additionally, the spiciness level seems to greatly impact the flavor of the dish -- not just the spiciness. I tried my friend's spice level 10 curry and it tasted very different from my spice level 2 dish. Also, spice level 10 was not spicy (very weak in comparison to this spice level at Coco Ichibanya). In my opinion, the flavor of the spice level 2 curry was better than the flavor of the spice level 10 curry. I will say however that all the proteins were cooked very well and the rice was cooked perfectly. The meal was not bad, but personally I would rather go elsewhere the next time the Japanese curry craving hits. I actually enjoy the flavor of the Golden Curry blocks better than the curry here. Perhaps someone else's tastebuds will prefer the curry at Maji Curry, but unfortunately, mine have different preferences. read more

So I was out in Irvine with my partner over the weekend and found this spot to try! There was no wait when we arrived and I decided to get the Pork Cutlet with Omelet Large. I am glad I got the Large since the portion size wasn't that big for the price in my opinion. The Cutlet and the curry had great flavors and since I chose Lvl 1, it was definitely not spicy. I see this place all the time since my family loves the ice cream place next door, so I figured I would stop by for lunch while I was back in the area. First impression, service was...uncomfortable. I went to open the door and I guess it was stuck but felt like it was locked. While I was reading their holiday hours, somebody inside opened the door for me and kind of made me feel like I did something wrong by not pulling the door hard enough. It was a very awkward interaction. I ordered my food, then was told to wait outside and she would bring my food out to me. Inside was empty, so I'm not sure why I was told to wait outside but ok. After about a 10 min wait my food was brought out. It was fresh and hot and the pork cutlet was very crispy. The meat was a bit tough/not tender. The curry itself has a great flavor but is more spicy than I am used to from Japanese curry; if you like the Golden Curry product, this has a tiny bit more heat than the mild one. I know my child won't eat this so I wish there was a "not spicy" option that might be kid friendly. I might be back to try something else, maybe the omelet curry or something. I just hope for friendlier service because I kind of felt unwelcome when I arrived. read more
Finally got to try this place after hearing that it was the best curry in town. I don't have a sharp palate for Japanese Curry but I do enjoy a good one. I came on a Friday night around 6:30pm and the establishment was not full yet. I would say after 7pm, lines started to form. While the food was tasty, I wasn't super amazed with it either given all the hype. I would come back again when I'm craving curry again but not if there's a long wait. || L O C A T I O N / P A R K I N G || -Located in the plaza as Wanderlust Creamery, Stacked, Jamba Juice, Trader Joes and more. -Cross Streets are Culver Dr. and Walnut Ave. -Plenty of parking around 6:30pm on Friday night, you could always park near the bank to avoid a lot of in and out traffic within the plaza || F O O D || Fried Chicken Karaage ($4.45) - Not the best karaage I've had but certainly not the worst. As it is under $5.00, expect the portion size to be smaller than at other establishments. I shared one with my friend and there were probably only 4-5 pieces on the plate. I'm indifferent about this and would rather spend my money on extra protein on my curry instead. Pork Cutlet Curry with Cheese (R: $15.04, L: $16.79, XL: $20.04) - Different portion sizes only apply for the rice and sauce, not the protein! You'll have to order an extra side of protein if you want more. Personally, the regular size was more than enough for me. The addition of cheese sauce to the curry makes it a lot more decadent and creamy. With the portion of cheese given, it doesn't take away from the strong curry flavor. For the spice level, I went with standard (0) but I still felt like there was a bit of spice, so beware! Overall, I enjoyed the dish and would recommend this to first timers at Maji Curry. read more

Been seeing a lot of hype about this new "Award winning" Japanese curry restaurant that had opened not too long ago. Curious to try it out since its been passing through my feeds for awhile. We happen to be in Irvine on Sunday afternoon , arrived at 4:30 p.m. so it wasn't peak hours . The place is quite small , so expect to be waitlisted if you are going during for dinner. First of , I like how they have different portion sizes to chose from (Regular , Large , XLarge ) We got the pork katsu curry with omelette & beef curry. The curry itself was packed with spices , very flavorful however it was a little too sweet imo. I prefer curry to be more on the savory side , other than that the pork katsu is tender & crisp on the outside . Omelette was very well cooked too . The beef curry was okay , but their pork is definitely the must try. read more

Stopped by here for the first time because we were craving some curry. It's located at the Walnut Village Center, has okay parking depending on the day/time (can get really crowded) We ordered: - Pork Cutlet Curry with Cheese & Egg XL (~$23) we got spice level 2. This place was honestly so upsetting as the food came out cold. The chicken wasn't crunchy, the rice was a bit stale, and the spice wasn't there. It honestly felt like we got someone's old order that was never picked up. We waited about 20-30 min for the food. We ordered to-go because we wanted to sit at a different store that was a 1-2 min walk from Maji Curry. On top of that, they forgot to include the cheese we paid extra for, so we had to return to the store to request it. When we asked, the employee seemed quite annoyed, despite it being clearly indicated on our receipt. She then only filled the second cup halfway, which felt a bit stingy even though we paid extra for it (I included a picture). With that service, I don't think I would ever come back here as there are plenty of curry places that would serve us better :/ read more
Came to this place because it was highly recommended. Ordered the chicken omelet. But after almost finishing my food, found some parts that weren't cooked all the way. It was dark pink/reddish. The manager was rude and when we asked her to take it off the bill, she got upset and gave attitude. She said that she would only take it off this time when the food was not cooked all the way. I would like to start by saying that the curry sauce itself was amazing. It is packed with flavors, and it is slightly on the sweeter side. The overall portion is huge too! The service was good. It was not anything extraordinary, but it's not bad. Basically standard. The place is pretty small, and I heard it can be crowded in the weekend. I went on a weekday dinner, so I did not have any wait. There are plenty of parking spaces too in the plaza so parking is definitely not a problem. However, the reason why I decided to give a 4 instead of a 5 is that the amount of protein is a little bit on the less side to my preference. It may look huge, but it was batter + pocket of air + pork. In addition, my spiciness level was level 5 (+ $1), but it was not at all spicy. read more

We've been lucky and both times we went, the wait was not long. My husband loves the curry here! You can see why it's won awards in Japan. The curry has a really deep flavor and has a kick to it, so I like mine with the pourable cheese sauce to balance it out and make it a little less spicy. Their katsu has a great texture. Their eggplant or other veggies are a great side to go with the curry. The only thing that has been difficult is that the two times we have been there, no high chairs have been available. They only have 2 and they've both been in use when we go. During their soft opening, they were not allowing takeout orders, but now that they are, that might be an easier option for us with a toddler. read more
My 2nd try was little bit disappointing comparing to the first experience. Their curry and pork katsu are delicious and I love the gentle spiceness of the level 5. However, I wish I didn't get the cheese sauce like last time.... it's just flavorless and the texture felt like if it's the vegan cheese. It doesn't have that full thickness of real cheese? And all the servers are friendly and nice just as last time, but they forgot to give us spoons And they moved my name to back on the waitlist; I understand that it happens because of the party size but the other group didn't even show up. So I was wondering why not just sit us now? They also do not support Yelp's virtual waitlist anymore FYI. read more

The curry was good but the katsu was better. Granted, I am not a huge fan of curry, but I just don't understand waiting 30 minutes for curry over rice. I got the pork cutlet with cheese and thought it was tasty but not markedly better than other curry houses. The cheese was more like a cheese flavored roux and didn't add much to my dish, but the katsu was juicy and fried perfectly. The level 5 spicy was just enough to give it a kick without affecting the flavor of the curry. But if you enjoy spicy foods like me, you'll be left wanting a bit more. Maji is definitely one of my favorite curries. Unlike traditional Japanese curry, Maji has a unique twist with a slightly sweet flavor alongside the savory, almost like a hint of apple. I love coming here because the service is really fast, and you can be in and out within 30 minutes. The ambiance is cozy and casual, making it a comfortable spot to enjoy a quick meal. Seating is limited, but from the handful of times I've visited, I haven't had any trouble finding a spot. read more
Food: we ordered the pork cutlet omelet curry and the chicken curry. Both level 2 (barely spicy). The curry at Coco Ichibanya is way better. The food here was just okay. The curry was not flavorful and the meats were fatty. Service: this was the main reason for my 1 review. The server was rude & pushy. He offered us free chicken karaage with a Yelp review. I said I would write one after dinner. After we paid the check, he asked us again to write a review. I told him I'd have to write it when I got home, but he stood at the door so we could not leave until I wrote it. I told him it was going to be 1 and he said then I shouldn't write it. I was appalled that they were trying to force me into writing a positive review for them. Ambience: clean, bright, casual. Styled to look like an Indian restaurant when it's a Japanese curry place. Seemed odd. There was a box on the table with forks and spoons plus 2 napkins. No knives which was unfortunate since their fatty meat was hard to cut. Also strange is that there are no chopsticks at an Asian restaurant. Such a hidden gem of a curry restaurant!! I've heard about this place for a while now from friends and finally got the chance to try them out on a weekday night. First off, the dining area is very cozy so don't be surprised if you have to wait a bit, with that being said, it adds to the aesthetic and is super cute (hence why I used the term cozy and not small lol) When you walk in you are immediately met with the aroma of curry and it's enough to make your mouth water. Once seated they bring you water and a jar of pickled vegetables to be eaten with your dish (admittedly I must have eaten the equivalence of their pickled veggies to my actual meal lol) I wanted to substitute my rice for veggies however they let me knew they weren't able to do that, no worries, I opted for a pork Katsu salad with a side of their level 10 curry and was very satisfied with my meal! Best part... it came out to less than $10! Their salad (which was under $8) is such a great deal for both the quality and quantity of what you're getting. And their side of curry is under $2 and for someone like myself who is looking to avoid the carbs with rice, such a good alternate option! The Katsu was perfectly fried, crisp and the meat was juicy and not dry. Their curry was delicious, and spicy yet not "level 10" spicy in my opinion (I do handle spice very well so take that review with a grain of salt lol) Again the picked veggies were such a nice pairing, we asked for 2 refills of the jar and they happily provided more! THEIR KATSU IS AMAZING. They replaced Curry House, but I have to say I was very pleased with their quality. The katsu was not overdone and it was crispy and delicious. Their level 2 was on the milder side but I fairly enjoyed it. The ambiance was not too big but I ordered togo. It still tasted good for takeout :) Service was also great since the worker asked me if everything looked correct on the ticket. Will be coming back!! read more
Came here close to opening time and luckily didn't have too long of a wait! The restaurant is definitely really small so I would recommend coming early to secure your spot on the waitlist. I almost felt pressured to eat quickly because I felt bad taking up a spot lol. I tried the chicken cutlet curry with cheese. There are only three spice levels, so I went with the standard and it already had a veryyyy slight kick to it. The cheese comes as a sauce in a separate container to pour on top. I feel like it didn't really add much flavor to be honest, and would skip on it next time to save the extra buck. The curry itself wasn't my favorite. It was on the sweeter side, which isn't my preference. Overall, not bad, but not good enough for me to come back. I would much rather go to Coco Ichibanya, as I find myself craving their food but haven't found myself wanting Maji since I came. read more
Portions are small and curry is too sweet. No flavor except sweet and the added chili. The beef patty was actually pretty good and was the right consistency for Japanese steak. It was however, super super small I really wanted to like maji Curry in Irvine since it was such a hit having tried it coming back from Japan. However the consistency of sauce and the mismatched flavor made the curry pretty awful to eat. I couldn't finish the curry. Maybe with some time, they'll figure it all out but for now I'll be avoiding here read more

Food: What I ordered is the large double pork cutlet with a level 5 spice. The fried pork cutlet was light and CRISPY!!!! The crunch when you bite into it can audibly be heard in the restaurant! The curry on the other hand was also super good. Just like any other curry, the curry was served hot and full of flavor. The taste of the curry can be described as salty, savory with a lot of curry spices in the mix. -Comparison: If I had to choose between Coco Ichibanya Curry or MAJI Curry, I'd personally choose Coco Ichibanya PURELY because the curry was sweeter and it was tailored to my taste pallet. THIS DOES NOT MEAN IT'S BAD! I LOVED both currys! Service: It might have been because I dined in during a downtime but there was no one else in the restaurant. Even though I say that, the service here was great. My server/cashier answered my questions very well and concisely without over or under performing. Ambiance: The setting of the restaurant is nice, small, cozy and simple. While I say this, it is also clean and well kept. The restaurant is located in a nice plaza with lots of other eateries in the area. Overall, I am very VERY happy with my visit here and would HIGHLY recommend anyone that loves Japanese curry to come check this out out. read more

A solid spot for some killer Japanese curry! All the attention surrounding MAJI Curry is definitely well deserved. We dropped by during a slower period (gauging from other reviews, this is extremely rare) and waited ~15 minutes before being seated. I went with their Chicken Cutlet Curry and added on the Omelet topping. The cutlet was crispy with tender cuts of meat, the omelet was beyond fluffy, and the curry was warm and rich with flavors. I will note that their curry is on the sweeter side, but I personally found that enjoyable! Helped combat the spice a bit. If the wait is not too long and you plan your visit strategically, would definitely recommend giving this spot a try! read more

The inside of this place is very small, there are only a handful of tables and some bar seating against the window. You put your name on the tablet outside and when I went there wasn't a way to join the waitlist thru the Yelp app. I got the omelet curry with pork katsu with the level 2 and my boyfriend got level 5. The spice definitely has a slow burn to it, but they are both not spicy. The curry was a little on the sweeter side. I loved how crispy my katsu was and the portion size of the rice is pretty big. I prefer the table side pickled vegetables at Coco Curry than the ones here, which was the one big drawback of this place. read more
Fairly new joint with a lot of buzz so had to stop by to check it out. Came on a weekend but during an off hour (~3 p.m.) so not terribly busy. Although I have seen lines out the door during peak hours. This place serves their award-winning Japanese curry, with the standard options of katsu curry, hamburger curry, and even salads. We ordered the katsu omelet and hamburger curry with a side of beef (promotional item). Each of the items also comes in different sizes with the XL equating to a large with an extra small bowl of curry on the side. Hamburger Curry - the beef had a slightly firm exterior but overall juicy and flavorful. This dish included cheese, which apparently is in liquid form instead of being melted on top of the dish. Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but the cheese did not add much depth to the dish so I recommend foregoing it. The curry itself was flavorful and definitely better than many but whether it is better than Curry House when it was still around (which was in the same plaza on Walnut and Culver), it is up for debate. The side order of beef was flavorful but a bit chewy. Katsu Omelet Curry - I'd get Katsu any day of the week and this was definitely a higher quality than most. The omelet was very thin and a good compliment but like the cheese with the Hamburger Curry, it didn't add much to the overall dish. Nevertheless, it was very enjoyable. Service - Great. Prompt and responsive. Definitely no complaints. Location - This restaurant is located in the Trader Joes / Smart & Final plaza at Walnut Avenue and Culver Drive in Irvine. Parking can be a challenge but overall should be manageable since it has a pretty large lot shared with many other shops. read more
My friend and I decided to try this place out since it seemed like it won a lot of awards! I got the Tonkatsu/Omelette Dish and added the Cheese Sauce 7/10 It wasn't anything special. The curry consistency was more on the watery side and it seemed less of a Japanese Curry and more of an Indian Curry. The curry was sweet and flavorful, however the Cheese cream was flavorless and didn't really taste like much. We've been on a hunt to find the best curry in the area and Maji Curry caught our eye especially as they've won awards in Japan for their curries. I got the regular sized curry with level 5 spice level. Note that the difference between regular, large and extra large is just for the proportion of rice and curry sauce, not meat. I thought the regular was a decent size and I felt full from that meal. The level 5 was a very tolerable spice level. You're still able to enjoy the curry with a good kick. I would say that the curry itself was good and flavorful but i thought the meats were mid. We ordered the hamburger, pork katsu and chicken katsu. The hamburger was juicy but I thought there was nothing too special. The pork katsu and chicken katsu were definitely lacking in crunchiness. The pork katsu i thought was a bit dry. Overall, good curry sauce but I wish they can improve on the texture of their katsu. read more

Finally got to try MAJI Curry after eyeing it for a while. The chain is from Japan so my expectations were high. It's more of a sit-down restaurant vs fast food and their menu ranges from cutlets to other variations like tempura, karaage, and veggies. I got their pork katsu curry with cheese. I went for just the regular size and turns out, it's already huge and very filling and their level 2 of spice is also already spicy for me. The curry was delicious and textbook perfect but the cutlet could be more tender. The biggest disappointment was the cheese as it didn't taste like anything. I wish they could use another type of cheese instead of this. Overall, at $15, I would say it's worth it for the price. The restaurant itself is spacious and well-lit, though not the biggest space, and they have plenty of parking available in the whole plaza. read more

Came here on a Sunday afternoon and put my name on the waitlist, which showed a 49-64min wait. It was about a 55min wait (we waited in the shopping center). After getting a text, we showed the staff the confirmation and were seated promptly. We were given a menu, but if you've waited that long already, you've already looked at pictures online. I went for the omelet curry with pork cutlet (regular size, which is 220g of rice and 180g of curry). I added cheese sauce on the side for $2.50. I opted to get an appetizer of chicken karaage as well ($4.45). Looking around, if I remember correctly, there were three tables, one bar seating (where we were sat) with 6ish seats, and a table for one in the corner. Since they do not do to-go orders and there are so few tables/people inside, our order came in 5 minutes. (I timed it because we were semi in a rush and wanted to see how long it'd take). For the curry, I really do enjoy the fact that there's enough curry for the amount of rice that you get. The pork cutlet was fried well and well-sized. The curry is sweet and has just a tick of heat for me - I surmise I could go for level 2 next time just to see how that goes. The cheese sauce however was forgettable for me - felt watered down and of no substance. It neither added nor detracted to the dish, but if I'm paying $2.50, it should add something of substance. Forgettable, I'd probably skip the cheese sauce. Karaage was done fine, one piece was a bit drier but the others were fine. Come here with the mindset of it being a quick service restaurant, as they want you in and out and be efficient. We were trying to catch a movie so this was fine with us and did its job but others may not be in the same situation as I. Dined here with a party of 5 for dinner on a Friday night. The wait was about 30-40 minutes. It's quite a small restaurant and can probably seat 20ish people at most, which explains the long wait times. The service was quick and friendly. I ordered the Omurice (Japanese-style omelet on top of a bed of white rice) with Tonkatsu. The curry was okay, nothing special to note. It had a semi-thick consistency but didn't have a lot of flavor compared to other Japanese curries I've had. All in all, I don't think it's really worth the hype especially considering the wait time. read more
This place was great! I arrived 15 minutes before open and we were 2nd in line. For the omelet, the egg was creamy and perfectly seasoned. The pork cutlet was crispy and juicy. For the chicken, the cutlet was good. The cheese sauce cut the kick in the curry. The curry was solid, it had a bit of spiciness. For the actual curry, I honestly don't know how quality differs in curries. Long story short, I ate it with rice and it was delicious. The large size is pretty big, so we had to take half of it home. The waiters were very attentive. There's only like 5 tables so... Yeah. Maji is solid curry with good customizations, so even though it's hard to get a table, I'm definitely I'm coming back. read more
MAJI Curry is a casual spot for Japanese curry, located in the shopping center with Stacks and Omomo. The store is pretty small with two rows of tables, so not great for groups. When I went for a weekday lunch, I was immediately seated. I tried the pork cutlet omelette curry with their cheese sauce at the standard level of spicy. Overall, the dish was ok. The pork katsu was nicely fried and tender, but the curry itself was bland compared to other spots' curry such as Coco Ichibanya or Misasa. The cheese sauce costs an extra $2.50 and tasted kinda creamy. I wouldn't say it was particularly cheesy nor did it have that gooey texture that melted cheese has. I'd definitely skip on the sauce in the future. Service is quick so it could be a good spot for takeout when in a rush. read more
