This isn't our first time dining here, but the service this time was quite poor. Not everyone, but especially the server with red/ black hair. We ordered three identical plates, but one of them had hardly any curry broth. The server said it was because we ordered extra vegetables. However, it doesn't make sense to pay for extra curry broth $5.39+tax when we also paid for more vegetables. Why should we have to order an extra side? I hope for a better resolution in this situation because $27 (before tax) for a pork cutlet omelet with vegetables and curry broth is very costly. The server should at least learn to explain the situation clearly when the order is placed! Additionally, the curry broth was served after we had finished eating. The server also dropped off the check before the broth arrived. What is the point of quick walking if it prevents you from listening to customers properly? Slow down and listen carefully to show respect to the guests. Attitude is something that she needs to improve for sure!

Curry was fire. Level 4 spice was perfect on both. My bf got the chicken cutlet n I got pork, I loved both and will most definitely be coming back. Thai tea kinda underwhelming, it was lw watery n not creamy Service however was great, they're super attentive and come as quick as u can press the call button. They're very helpful and made the experience more delightful. The place is clean and well decorated, I came right at opening on a Saturday 30 min later whole place was packed for lunch!

The iconic Japanese comfort food stateside. If you've had any kind of Japanese curry or even the original, then this will not disappoint taste wise for you. Word to the wise - this is located at the infamous Diamond Jamboree plaza, so if you come at peak dinner time or weekends make sure you have a full tank of gas and a bad attitude to find parking. Yelp waitlist can't save you on this one. I had the omelette chicken katsu curry and my wife had the same with the classic pork. I recommend to dine-in as the signature omelette curry is only available as such. It was delicately rich so it somehow still felt like a light meal despite the deep-fried, sauced up goodness. Immensely satisfying and addictingly seasoned with an unmistakably unique flavor profile. It took all of my willpower not to lick the plate clean in public. A top-tier takeout meal as a result. Service was fine but more akin to quick-service rather than full. Best suited for solo / couple diners because of this and the relatively smaller space. Generally intimate and quiet setting with apparent focus on minimal interaction as you order and pay with your phone. I take it as efficient but large groups looking for a more traditional restaurant experience may be disappointed in this regard. Now for the sole slight negative: this is comfort food with ironically cutthroat pricing. The taste and vibe alone make this a 5* joint, but I have to take one off for the "nickel & dime" pricing. Every single add-on possible is charged for and at rather elevated amounts. The most egregious to me as a capsaicin junkie is the scaling surcharge for spice level. I assume they just add more spice powder to achieve this but glad to be corrected if I'm wrong. Max level spice is 10 which will run you a whole extra $1 for likely fractions of a cent worth of powder. Aren't we spicelords already punishing ourselves enough? When the base price of a plate is already pushing $20 and tip is expected, this is pretty painful. Overall I do still recommend Coco Ichibanya here as it scratches a rather unique comfort food itch, but that comfort only lasts until the bill comes.

My bf and I were missing this from our trip to Japan last summer and we decided to finally try this out. I kept my expectations low because I didn't think it was going to the be the same but oh man I was wrong. This Japanese curry always hits the spot! And it definitely was nice to reminisce our trip. We got the udon and the regular chicken katsu curry.

Pork cutlet with regular rice portion

I came here with my family on a Sunday afternoon and it was about a 15 minute wait for dine-in. We were given a physical menu once we were seated, but noticed that there was a QR code at the table that we could scan to see an online version, as well as place the order through instead of waiting to order with a server. I got the pork cutlet with a regular rice portion, and regular spice level. Food came out within 10 minutes and everything was piping hot. The cutlet portion seems smaller from the menu photo (and from what I remember), but it was still delicious. The breading was crispy and the pork was thoroughly cooked and juicy. For a regular spice level, the spice barely heated up my throat; it's a bummer that it costs more to increase the spice. The restaurant itself is medium sized, with multiple booths and tables that can seat 2-4 people. Although Diamond Jamboree has a larger parking lot, it can be hard to find parking here due to the numerous eateries in this plaza.

We ordered the chicken cutlet omelette curry, chicken cutlet curry, and the chicken cutlet curry udon. The omelette curry was delicious, fluffy egg over rice with their rich Japanese curry and a crispy chicken cutlet on the side (on request). The curry udon was also really good, with thick chewy noodles and the same flavorful curry broth. Portions were solid and everything came out hot and fresh. Great spot when you're craving Japanese curry. Highly recommend.

Firstly, don't do what I did. I walked into the dine-in part of the business, because the signage with its name was prominent there. I come to find out there are two separate doors for the 2 and 1 business. There's a wall dividing the take out and dine-in business. It feels as if they are 2 different restaurants. The left side is take out. The right side is dine-in. I ordered via GrubHub. Pickup was easy once I walked through the correct door. The food was fresh and tasty. The crunchy and crispy fried chicken katsu was exactly as it should be and not greasy. The flavor of the curry regular spicy level was moderately spicy. I found the consistency more liquid-y than I would have liked. Next time I'd like to dine-in. Note, parking is hellish. This is located at the popular Diamond Jamboree (shopping center). Parking is always a chore here. Be aware.

This place has some serious nostalgia from my time in Japan for me. The menu seems to have changed a bit since the last time I visited here 5 years ago, but the flavors are still the same! I always love coming here and indulging in delicious curry accompanied with great speedy service. COCO can get packed so make sure you get in here at a good time!

Evelyn T.

There's a location closer to me but it doesn't have as much on its menu. Here I was able to order cheese naan, which I really liked and would reorder (5 stars). The chicken katsu curry (4 stars) is crispy without an oily, greasy, or burned taste. The variety of spice levels available for the curry work well when going with people whose spice tolerance, or lack thereof, differ. The level I selected cost a little less than the spicier ones. The mild curry I pchose was creamy, smooth and savory. The only reason I'm taking one star off is the rice (3 stars). It doesn't taste as good to me as store bought brands like Nishiki. Service was friendly and efficient. The restaurant was clean. In terms of parking, if you want to find a spot during peak hours, be lucky, good, or both. Diamond Jamboree is home to H-Mart, Marugame Udon, Yigah, Meet Fresh, MINISO and many other places.

I looooove coco ichibanya!! I would frequent this spot all the time when I went to UCI! The wait may take a while but it is so worth it! I have tried multiple things from the menu and everything is sooo yummy. Some of my faves are the omelette with chicken katsu and cheese. The veggie croquette and fried chicken is also super yummy!! I also love the garlic naan with cheese. This is located in diamond jamboree so parking can be a nightmare.

I'm not a huge fan of curry but if I'm going to go eat curry, I'm going to Coco Ichibanya! The curry isn't too sweet, which is something I appreciate about it and it is thick, herby and hot - perfect for a cold night! I love their chicken katsu curry with vegetables and my husband always orders the chicken katsu omurice with dumplings and corn. The two things I absolutely HATE about this place is the parking, because parking at Diamond Jamboree is a nightmare at any normal meal time or at night really, AND the wait for Coco Can be incredibly long. I came here once on a Friday night at 5:30 and waited 45 minutes to get seated. Once seated, I remember the service not being the best because the staff was so frantic over one difficult client (truly not the restaurant or wait staff's fault).

Hannah P.

The waitlist said our party only had a 10-20 minute wait but it was a lot longer than the estimate. We also had to wait a bit for a host to come by to answer any questions since they didn't have enough workers. Our party had a stroller and a toddler so we waited longer for a bigger table with a high chair (~1 hr wait for Saturday lunch) Overall the food was as good as I remember from before and the portions were large. The wait for the food wasn't that long but we did wish the appetizers (fries) came first. Service was decent not amazing. The restaurant wasn't too loud even though it was a small space and the table was nice and big to fit all of our food.

Minced beef cutlet omelet with cheese, and their new curry bao
Becky D.

Came here to have some ddinner. I love coco curry especially with cheese. I got the minced beef cutlet omelet with cheese and the quality was still the same as it ever was, which was perfect. Only issue I had was there was still about a hour wait even though the check in said 20mins.. when we were sat they told us they were short staffed.. but the service was great despite the fact it took us 2 tries to get their attention with the on-table button. They were nice. Alot of the restaurant tables were open and they were not utilizing filling all the tables, but I'm guessing that's because they're short staffed.

I had to call in my order (they are on Doordash but the prices are lower if you call). It would be nice if you could order through their website, but it's not a big deal. We got shrimp tempura, chicken katsu with a side of curry, and an Alaskan roll. The food was all delicious! My daughter could not get enough of the Alaskan roll. It's simple and classic, especially if you love salmon. The chicken katsu was really good and I enjoyed dipping it in the curry. They don't offer potatoes or carrots in their curry sauce like some other Japanese restaurants do, which was a small disappointment, but I still really liked the curry. It had that "spicy" but not spicy flavor that comes from all the flavorful spices like ginger that are in the curry, but it wasn't hot (we ordered mild). The chicken katsu was a good portion side and it came with a side of rice and angel hair shredded cabbage. Cabbage isn't the most exciting vegetable, but I'll take it. The shrimp tempura was great too. The takeout bag was packaged really nicely and the katsu came in a fancy little box, so even though we were eating at home it felt a little more upscale. But the prices were pretty on par with other sushi restaurants around here, so it's definitely affordable!

I've been to their Rodeo 39 location before and loved it, so having one at the UTC is perfect for me because of how close it is. The Irvine location is very nice with a clean dining room and good music. The employees at both locations have always been helpful and courteous. I've now tried the Chicken Katsu (on Monday) and the Pork Belly (tonight), and honestly, I still can't decide which one I like more. The chicken was incredibly juicy with the perfect crunch, and the pork belly... omg. So good. The curry was another highlight--super flavorful and tasted just like the curry I enjoyed during my time in Japan. And here's a tip: the best value is to make every plate a combo (+ miso & drink). You get more variety for the price, and it's absolutely worth it. Next time, I'm going for the beef belly plate, and I think this place will be on my rotation.

Been frequenting coco for over a decade and have dined many times at the Torrance, Irvine, and LA locations. This was my second time at this location since they opened, both visits take out. First visit service was very slow, I waited a couple minutes in the restaurant before anyone even appeared at the front stand and once she did she didn't have the friendly energy I'm used to being greeted with when dining at Coco Ichibanya. Seemed very uninterested and straight faced during our interaction which didn't enhance my experience. Second visit here was last night. My friends and I ordered all our meals with cheese added on for an extra $1.50 each. Unfortunately we were disappointed to find that there was barely a sprinkle of cheese added to each of our meals. The keema CHEESE fries was the most egregious part, there was a small sprinkle of cheese in the top left corner of the fries and then literally nowhere else. We've gotten this order so many times from other locations and it's never been served this way before. Unfortunately this was a delivery order and there wasn't much we could do to rectify the situation. Definitely impacted the overall quality of the meal, especially the Keema cheese fries as the name would suggest it's supposed to come with cheese all over it not just on a few of the fries in one corner. As far as our curry, it didn't feel fair that we spent an additional $1.50 each for the cheese add on when we got the small amount we received. If this was my first time dining at Coco I would've just assumed they skimp on the cheese at this restaurant, but having dined at Coco so many times I know that this was absolutely a mistake or an oversight by this new location. Overall the food is good but it's absolutely not on par with the other locations yet. For $155 we weren't satisfied with what we received.
