I came on a weekday to purchase some bakery items and drinks. They have seating indoors and outdoors, which is nice. There was a small line of 6 people, including myself and a few employees working to fulfill orders and another making drinks. They had pastries on cooling racks but since the doors were open, there were many flies in the restaurant. I did end up picking up croissants, a lemon meringue tart, and a coco passion dessert after inspecting them and did not see any flies landing on said products. I ordered an iced soy chai and an iced soy matcha latte. Both had great flavor and were not too sweet. The croissants were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. So sad because I left highly disappointed. I've been wanting to try their award winning croissants but unfortunately they were already sold out (around 11:15am) which I specifically came in for. I am a huge pastry person so I had to give their croissant a try since it was voted SF 2025 Best Croissant winner. I got to say, it is definitely one of the best croissants I have had. It's perfectly golden-brown flaky exterior with a light, airy honeycomb interior of decadent layers. It was delicious. Only reason for not giing 5 stars is the service was not as warm/welcoming as I would have hoped and was a bit disorganized. I ordered the homemade chai which was good but a bit lukewarm and took a while to be made. We stopped by on a drizzly late morning and the line was out the door. It was our first time. It moved quickly though. We ordered the pain au chocolat, almond pain au chocolat, and smoked salmon tartine. I really enjoyed the buttery, well laminated layers of the chocolate croissant. The almond chocolate one was flat with crispy edges which my wife also enjoyed. The smoked salmon tartine needed to be heated which I think they do upon request, but we didn't realize that until after we left. It would have been nice if staff offered it. We came here after hearing about their victory at the SF Best Croissant competition. We've previously tried last year's winner Junipers and so were excited to try Maison Benoit. We had the Classic croissant, Parisian sandwich, a canele, apple tart, and the spinach quiche. The standouts were the croissant and the Parisian. The croissant was crispy and buttery without feeling heavy/greasy. The baguette for the Parisian was crunchy on the outside with a fantastic chew on the inside, one of the best Parisian sandwiches I have had in a long time. The price was also very reasonable as well. Service was a bit slow on a Tuesday morning. Big line despite it being a weekday, I can only imagine how much busier this place can be on the weekends. The hold up from what I can tell was at the ordering counter. I think the huge selection gives pause to just about everyone, so it takes some time to get orders in. Arrived on a Saturday morning at 10:30am and waited ~35 min. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating - extended menu of pastries, bread, sandwiches and drinks! Sadly only plain croissants available at the time. The plain croissant had nice layers and good flavor, i appreciated how all the pastries here are not overly buttery and greasy like most places. The texture is however not crunchy but soft and pillowy. The garlic bread was subpar, bread needed some toast and more flavor. The pecan cookie was delightful. The choquettes were eggy and nice even without filling - pairs well with coffee. The country loaf was nicely baked and had fluffy interior. They just won the best SF croissant, but before you become silly and take extraordinary efforts to come, let me save you. Their croissants are softer, less hefty. While crispy, it is not earth-shatteringly so. When bitten into, it gives off fragile flakes rather than crunchy shards. It has way less flavor development than that from the tops players. There are plenty of croissants I love over these. But they are cheaply priced @$3.75. I usually love cream puffs, so I am surprised that I am not into their Marquise given the raves. The pastry cream is thicker and less flavorful than I am used to. The worst thing I had here was the $14 Ham and Cheese Croissant (warmed). Even if it is priced normally @$7, I would prefer most sandwiches and Banh Mi over this... and Arsicault's Ham and Cheese Croissant is way better at half-price. The best thing I had here was the Almond Pain au chocolat (Almond Chocolate Croissant). The almond paste is not too sweet, nice and ooey. But do I like it enough to come again? No. I much prefer B. Patisserie's crave-worthy Chocolate Banana Croissant. I like that one completely cooled when the chocolate re-solidifies, so you are biting into the crunch of chocolate against oozing banana. Oh boy, this place is busy. It's also a 30 minute drive from my place but I will have to say it was worth it. I'm on a mission to find the best chocolate croissants in the Bay Area and these are a top contender so far. At least it's way better than the ones I got from forma 2 weeks ago. I was afraid of things selling out so I placed an order the night before. The website is super easy to navigate. When I got there around 11am there was a big line out the door. I walked in and asked someone where I could pick up and they brought me to a register where a nice young man got me my prepacked boxes of croissants. I got home and warmed it up just a touch and yum - it's flakey and soft without feeling too bready, just the way I like them. I love croissants, especially the ones that have quality butter as the star ingredient. Maison Benoit does not disappoint. Their Kouign-amann is also some of the best I've had. My only qualm is the small size for the price, but otherwise it is balanced in flakeyness, sweetness, and butteryness. The service is always friendly and the decor is beautiful. It is a lovely space to grab some coffee with friends or catch up on some work with your laptop. There had been plenty of street parking when I went on early morning weekdays. I knocked off one star because I've only tried four items, their shaken espresso (delicious), kouign-amann (delicious), Cobb salad (not good), and croissant (soo delicious). So I quickly ordered 1 to go before heading to my brunch date! The person who helped me seemed a bit pushy and kept asking "anything else? That's it!" The outside of the croissant had lots of chocolate chips and inside had lots of almond paste! I've never seen a croissant that's so loaded with ingredients! The outside of the croissant is very crispy. You can tell it's very fresh! But when I tasted the inside, I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't taste any almond flavor!! I thought it was because the chocolate was overpowering . so I tried to just taste the almond paste without the chocolate chip. But still, the paste had no strong almond flavor. I'm a chocolate lover but I still love my almond croissant to have almond flavor. So I was a bit disappointed and wish that the almond taste would be stronger than what they had. $7.50 for the croissant was a bit steep for me since I was not totally satisfied. I think they just celebrated their 1 year anniversary! This is actually my first time here in 2025! I was out sick. A few important updates: New menu items! (Go visit and be surprised) Service / checkout has improved! Remember the long lines? Well there is still a bit of a long line because of its popularity, but checkout experience got faster. No cash (unless you want to leave a cash tip). I recommend trying some of the imported cheese, pâté, meat cuts in the fridges. lastly and probably more importantly the workers are much more knowledgeable about their business ops and pastries. Most people that come here are locals in the tri-valley area... which in my experience we have a curiosity and debate how French this place really is. Well you can chat with the workers here. And most of them speak or are learning French. They even have an Asian guy that speaks perfect French. Maison Benoit is a lovely French bakery that you can smell from streets away in the mornings - it really makes you want a bite! Upon walking closer, you're treated to a fun view through the glass windows and partially open kitchen where you can watch many pastry chefs doing their craft, rolling out dough, measuring eggs and flour, and creating the beautiful and precise selection of baked goods available for purchase. The selection of pastries is extensive and displayed prettily in the glass containers as you come to the counter (sometimes there's a wait in line, more so because it takes customers time to decide than because the staff are slow). Cute croissants, eclairs, fruit tartes, slices of cake, quiche slices, classic French sandwiches and the like greet you and you let the staff know which and how many you'd like, which they can put in a to-go box or on nice platters for dine-in. Beware that inventory does run out later in the day so morning is the best time to go if there are specific items you'd really like! Items are also priced kind of like a fancy brunch place such as $9 for a little lemon meringue tarte or around $7 for a chocolate almond croissant a la carte. Loaves of bread are also available. We got the Breakfast Board ($12.50 - a croissant, chocolate croissant, half baguette served with honey, jam, and butter) for a sampler of the classics and passed on the coffee/tea drinks available this time. Water and utensils are self-serve, and a good amount of varied indoor and outdoor seating options were available. We noticed extra Yule Log cakes available on discount after the holidays as we made our way outside to sit in the pleasant sun. Of the Breakfast Board, our favorite was the chocolate croissant. The chocolate bars in it had good depth of flavor, so cocoa-y and not too sweet. Best of all, the edge of the croissant was so incredibly flaky and crispy, making for a wonderful bite through all the layers of pastry. Our second favorite was the baguette, which we opted to enjoy with just butter (taking the cute jam and honey jars home!) It was really good whipped butter, which when generously spread on the chewy fresh bread made for yummy bites. The exterior of the loaf was crispy crust, and the inside softer and chewier - if anything we'd prefer the baguette just a tad softer overall but perhaps that's also because it was room temperature and not warm when we ate it. Finally, the croissant was fine but did not stand out as exceptional to us. It wasn't as crispy-flaky as the chocolate croissant, but it was impressively airy and easily gobbled up. It still did leave crumbs all over. I would have preferred it to have a bit more buttery or salt flavor. Overall, a fun and authentic-seeming bakery option in Downtown Danville with lots of fans! We thought that overall it was good but not exceptional - wouldn't mind coming back, especially as a place to enjoy a coffee and pastry with a friend, but also wouldn't be craving this place or driving from far out of town just to visit. read more
