Holy crap!!! So freaking good. Very low key looking but don't miss it when you're driving in Tucson. I get their bacon breakfast burrito which is a great post drinking meal or even just a filling breakfast for someone whose hungry. It is so authentic, the people are so nice, and the food is absolutely amazing. The outside isn't perfectly trendy and cute, but it's the perfect spot for great Mexican flavors and prices. Although I live walking distance from Maico and have been by it a zillion times, I didn't actually get in to try it until today. It was about 1 pm on a Sunday afternoon, and I ordered the green chile burrito from the whiteboard of daily specials. The guy working (who I think is the owner) said they didn't have any, but that the red chile would be ready in another 10 minutes. I instead opted for a chicken burrito (my second choice), which came in at $4.97 after tax. I thought the price was reasonable for what I received, a plain no-frills chicken burrito (just chicken inside, no rice or beans). The food was good, although I did think it was a bit bland and was wishing they had a "wet" option with the entire thing slathered in tomatillo sauce or something, The owner was extremely friendly, and I will definitely be going back just for the service itself! read more

Four of us we're driving through town on our way to Los Angeles from Galveston Tx. We heard about this place from an episode of "Bazaar Foods". The food was very good especially the ceviche tostada. The staff is friendly and the wait is short. Maico is hidden in an area that I typically try to avoid, but makes a point to have an individual reconsider any spot that lacks a flashy facade. The set up is nice, but may not be too practical on a hot sunny day due to the lack of indoor seating. Even so, you can certainly buy a refreshing Mexican Coke at this joint to freshen up. Nothing completes a fulfilling dining experience more than a great view of the traffic on 22nd Street... Yep, I am naturally projecting a bit facetiousness upon you about the "ambiance" of Maico. All kidding aside for just a second, the dining experience at Maico is decidedly unsophisticated. Indeed, I was quite drawn to the rustic feel of the place: there is no indoor dining per se. One reviewer characterized this situation thusly: "Maico: eat with flies." They do, however, have plenty of tables and chairs in a patio area. And when I say patio, I mean the patio of a former home. So on top of having to eat al fresco, you literally have to order at what used to be a window. Seriously, take a second from being enraptured by this review to look at the nearest window on your home, apartment, or other dwelling and imagine it without any sort of glass. Then look around your living space and kitchen and imagine it converted to one big cooking area devoted to making Mexican food. Finally, picture that food being produced being pretty damn good. Now snap back to reality and continue with my review. Like you, I'm sure, when I first heard of Maico, I was like "WTF, what the hell is Maico?" I had passed by the place several times with interest barely registering. Then I heard that the dude from Travel Channel's Bizarre Food paid a visit to the place a while back. He apparently sampled the birria, or goat stew. A few weeks ago, I happened to drive by the place on my way to a friend's. I was hungry and decided to make a spontaneous stop. In all honesty, I've only been here once and ordered just three tacos. Like any good, self-respecting taqueria, the carne asada was seasoned well, cooked properly, had fresh condiments including salsa with a nice bite, and tasty flour tortillas. I also had one aforementioned birria taco. That, too, was made properly. You could tell that it took hours to cook, as the goat was very tender and effused with spices and chili. The three tacos were washed down with the required Mexican soda. I caught glimpses of dishes from other patrons, and it all appeared tasty, so I will make plans in the future to try some non-taco items. The food there undoubtedly was good. Judging from my wise-cracking comments earlier about the ambiance of Maico, I truly don't have a problem with eating outdoors. In fact, I would say that the majority of places in town that serve the best tacos don't have indoor seating. In fact, tacos in Mexico are quintessentially a street food made and eaten on the street with the flies and whatnot. Though I don't think many streets in Mexico matches the beauty, character or liveliness of our little 22nd Street. read more

I've been eating at Maico just about once a week for years now. We started when we were remodeling our kitchen and had no stove for 4 months and now its just habit. My husband has never been able to say the name of the place, so he calls it "Taco Guy" - where we go to get good tacos. Carne Asada is very good and always plentiful. Veggie burro doesn't feel like a pile of rice in a dry burrito but is full of sour cream and guac and other goodies. I highly recommend the potato tacos, too (I get them with extra beans, inside - yum!) and the chile relleno burrito. Service is always friendly, go at lunch and you'll always get to chat with the owner. He still asks me if my kitchen turned out good. We always get our meal to go, but the outdoor eating area is clean if not private and quiet. Come on - this is the way Mexican fast food is meant to be - quick, loud and GOOD! read more

Hands down the worst pollo Asado ever, and I've had it in backwater Iowa. Small bits of hard as rock, dried up chicken. At first I thought my order was wrong and mistook it for a bacon burrito. Nope just same color texture size and flavor as chopped up bacon. I hate to admit, but I'm a bit of an extreme Mexican Food snob. You tend to get that way married to a Mexican wife that cooks authentic Mexican meals every night. Maico is hands down, by far, the best street-style, order and go Mexican food in Arizona PERIOD. I've had over 10 different items off the menu just so I could dampen my enthusiasm for their food but every time I stuff my face, I leave feeling ecstasy in my stomach. This is a better alternative to Filibertos or Nico's. Not much more than that, but it has its own necessary place in the culinary spectrum. The menu is essentially identical to either of the restaurants named above, and the prices comparable too, but you do get the feeling a bit more care is put into the food here. The people working here are very nice. The burrito I had was delicious. What more do I have to say, really? You should try this place if you like this sort of thing. The salsa was a good solid salsa and matched their food well. I would have preferred a little more salsa variety, but I wasnt disappointed. The ambiance is...uhm...ok there's no ambiance. They try though! There are tablecloths on the tables...bungee tied to the tables. Theres a small vegetable garden and well-groomed shrubs in fanciful shapes around the property...which do absolutely nothing to distract you from the fact that you're on 22nd street and could be shot at any moment. The music playing in the background only contributes to your feeling of maybe being shot soon...but HEY! They try, right? They try hard, and its noticed and somewhat appreciated. It's been around for years. And finally got to try it the other night. Great customer service, decent prices as well as good food!

The food here is pretty good. Better than viva or filibertos anyway. The reason for the low score is they consistently over charge you. Every single time. They have a 50cent charge for using a card, but there is no sign or mention of any kind they're going to do that. Even without that fifty cents, the subtotal is always too high. I ordered a burro listed at $7.95. They charged 9.40 + 50cent surcharge. That would make the "tax" $1.45 which is over 18%! Tax here in Tucson is 8.7%. The seventy five cents I was over charged isn't going to break the bank, but I won't support a business that is consistently this unethical. read more
