Best choice walking distance from the Madison Concourse on football weekends because this place isn't favored by drinking revelers. Good northern Indian cuisine, must be Muslim because there's Halal cow meat choices. Good poori, two kinds of dal, lots of chicken curry choices. I like their fish curry. You might not like the service if you're Gora or high caste, but I like the competent no-nonsense waitstaff. They make chai (remember, chai means tea, so it's not "chai tea" if it's authentic) to order so that will take 20 minutes as it should. Good prices, and they will make it spicy if you ask and you look South Asian. Every time I've been here there's been someone reading some Postmodernist material, so it attracts that kind of overeducated radical crowd for whatever reason. The post-colonial world is so amusing.

We went for dinner with friends from our of state. Everyone enjoyed their meals (we basically shared and tasted everything). The serving staff were efficient and friendly. We had one vegan in our party and the server was very accommodating, going so far as to exchange his roti for a new order without butter. The buttered chicken was very good. We also ordered appetizers. The restaurant overall was clean and tidy. Staff was busy cleaning up and arranging the lunch buffet area. Bathrooms were a bit dated and could maybe use some deep cleaning in 'problem' areas, but otherwise we'll stocked.

Maharani is one of my two favorite Indian restaurants in the area. I always go with the basic chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. It never disappoints. It literally always tastes the exact same and it's delicious. I ordered delivery this time but the wait is never long when I go in to the restaurant and it's always a good experience

Ordered a lamb vindaloo with raita, rice and garlic naan. Found the service a bit ordinary, especially when ordering. We felt rushed and a slight annoyance from our server. Not rude per se but just uninterested. Price wise, it was good. The meal was quite good too. Not the best vindaloo I have had but not too bad.

    Moldy lemon

Unbelievable! Serve a moldy lemon on the entree? I called and the lady could care less! Didn't apologize or offer a solution! They need an inspection! How do you plate a moldy lemon?

Their door was cracked open and their curry sauces were on the floor with no lids. That apartment is known for having roaches.

My favorite Indian restaurant! Chicken Tikka Masala and Navaratan Korma curries are the best. Great for eating in or take out.

Tip: If you pay with cash, I believe they give you a 10% discount. Service: Came around a weekday night and it fairly easy to dine in. Group dining comes with rice to share if you order the curry or tikk Onion and black pepper naan: Plenty of caramelized onions for you to get the savory flavor. Comes in about 3-4 slices of naan. Great to share with a group. Chicken Tikka Masala: Always a great staple dish to always order. Chicken was soft and the tomato creamy sauce was flavorful. *Unique dishes Garlic Cheese Naan: I was very excited to try this since they stuff the naan with Wisconsin cheese. It added a bit of a savory flavory and had the right amount of cheese. Pretty much tasted like a light mozzarella pancake. Comes in about 3-4 slices of naan. Great to share with a group. Egg Curry (spice: level 4 medium plus): Comes with 3 eggs? cooked in onion, garlic, ginger and spices. Basically just hard boiled eggs and sauce was similar to less flavorful version of Tikka Masala. A bit underwhelming since I thought they would have done something besides place a hard boil egg. Spice pretty similar to light Siracha level.

Everything we tried was outstanding. The restaurant has two floors which may lead for a tad slower service on a busy night as people go up and down the stairs. I enjoy the throwback signs of restaurants of old. Plants and artwork broke up the space, feeling both open yet cozy. We started with a few apps-bison momo, samosa, and pakoda. The samosa had an incredibly flaky crust that was stellar. The momo was next level. The accompanying sauce brought a little heat but every bite left you wanting more. For our main course, we opted for the lamb kabobs as well as the biriyani. The lamb was executed perfectly-a great char with tender meat, it was accompanied by a nice rice pilaf. The dish was substantial as was the biriyani. Flavor packed, it hit all the notes. For those new to Madison or unfamiliar to the area, Ama is set back off the road with a very small/tight parking lot. We opted for street parking vs. trying to jenga ourselves out of there. A must visit.

They have a beautiful patio with lots of flowers. Inside there is seating on the ground level and then an upstairs that overlooks the 1st floor. There's lots of natural light and the atmosphere is just really nice. I will say it was a bit toasty inside and the windows were open. Our server was very attentive and helped me figure out what could be made vegan (a lot of the menu). My table ordered samosas, which were light/tasty and almost seemed like they were baked. I ordered the tofu buff for my entree and I really enjoyed it. The portion sizes are a little small for the price, but it does come with a delicious dal and that helps. Overall really flavorful and it all tasted so fresh. I'm looking forward to my next visit!
