My husband wanted Chinese food and we always spend too much time looking online for a place to go, as we haven't been to any Chinese restaurant, in our area, that we can rave about. We ended up ordering take out from the China Inn, after a nine-year absence. This establishment has not been my favorite place to order Chinese food, in years past, but I obliged my husband's request, as I didn't want it taking an hour to decide where to eat. I ordered my usual, chicken with snow peas, which also included bamboo shoots, carrots and celery. It comes with a darker sauce now, when years ago it came with a white sauce. I told my husband to ask if they could substitute the dark sauce, for white sauce, and to my surprise they honored my request. My husband ordered the Four seasons with shrimp, chicken, beef, roasted pork and broccoli. He ordered it extra spicy. The meal came with white rice. We also ordered pork eggs rolls, cream cheese rangoons and pork fried rice. I was pleasantly pleased with my dish, although the celery could have been stir-fried a bit longer, as it was very crunchy. The chicken was tender and moist and the peas, carrots and bamboo shoots were stir fried perfectly. My husband wasn't super thrilled with his dish as he ordered it extra spicy, but he stated it was bland, and it was lacking in shrimp. Now, knowing when my husband states food is not spicy, and I taste it, my mouth is burning, so who knows if it was spicy or not. I wasn't going to take a chance tasting his meal. The eggs rolls and crab rangoons were crispy and not greasy. The pork fried rice was also very good and much better tasting than years ago. I can't comment on the interior, as I didn't pick up the take out. I was very happy there was no issue with substituting the sauce that I wanted in my dish. I order Chinese take out frequently, so I have a lot of thoughts and opinions on what I order. I still have yet to find the best Chinese take out delivery in Madison. The pro's of China Inn were: 1. that people recommend it as really delish for East Madison. 2. The combo plate options that come with additional egg roll. Allows you affordability and to get what you'd most likely want to already order. 3. Affordable and relatively tasty. 4. The pork egg rolls! So good. My dislikes were: 1. Not a fan of their Fried Wontons - the Wonton wrapper just wasn't what I usually like, but the meat filling was good. 2. The Shrimp Eggroll - it was SUPER greasy and did not sit well with me. 3. Not a big fan of the pork fried rice. I liked the fried rice, but wasn't a fan of the pork. Likely I won't order again because Fried Wontons are the #1 in my takeout request. read more

So I always choose China Inn. One it's close, and two is good good, Order my usual. 4 seasons something, orange chicken for the wife and hot and sour soup. The 4 seasons sometime... has chicken, pork,beef and shrimp. Some sauce and some vegetables. Nice and warm. Tasted great... however.. the pork had a different flavor this time around. Was edible, just wasn't expecting that. Not a big fan of orange chicken so didn't try it. My wife thought it was good. So it's good. The hot and sour soup... this time around I was a little disappointed. Seemed off and lacked flavor. It was missing the sour and the heat. In the past it's always been excellent. The service was great. Go in pick it up. I placed the order in at work. Drove 10 minutes and it was ready.... nice. The place is a little rundown I side. But I liked it. Not pleased with the food here. My chicken fried rice was disappointing to say the least. The chicken looked gray and of poor quality. The rice even looked like it had been scraped from the bottom of the rice cooker. The teriyaki sticks were huge, but kind of breaded in a way. Flavor was OK. The veggie egg roll only had cabbage inside. No other veggies. My hubby liked his general Tso's ok. My fortune cookie was an omen-opened it first....to NO FORTUNE. :( will not try again. read more

Somehow I missed the fact that despite having eaten their food five times in the last ten months I have never reviewed the China Inn. When we first moved here last August this became our go-to Chinese restaurant for delivery. It was close, the food was decent, the prices good, and they delivered. Also if you ordered $30 you got a free General Tsos meal. A good deal. We have tried many different dishes - shrimp (spicy/ mushrooms), chicken (cashew/ spicy) and pork dishes. All were solid. I would have given them four stars for the first three meals we ordered from them through December. Then came the pandemic.... they were closed for the first part but then reopened. No longer do they deliver but you can pick-up. They have an interesting system for sorta no contact that works OK but if someone gets in line before you and their food is not ready it will hold up the whole drive-thru line. I won't fault them too much for that. The bigger problem is the food quality- it seems to have fallen off from what I remembered last fall and thus the three star rating. We will start our search for another nearby place for Chinese take-out. read more

China Inn's food is made fresh to order and is delicious and authentic Chinese fare. The wait for walk-ins to order/receive their food isn't any longer than you'd expect at your local Culver's. They have a huge menu and offer carry-out, delivery, or dine-in. The dining room is a bit lack luster, but the majority of their business is take away, so this isn't a big deal. read more

We have ordered from here for years. However the last year has been slower and slower service. Tonight was the last straw. We ordered, online at 5:44 and at 6:47pm and I called the restaurant to ask where the food was. They said he had left. They did call me back and told me the driver was two min away. But I am disappointed that this is happening too often. They charge a delivery fee along with our tip and it is literally 7 min from our house. Very good food. My first experience with their food was Dash. Fed a group of 8 adults and 7 children a wide variety of offerings. All good No issues or complaints. Covens is that they offered high quality ingredients nicely prepared. I visited the restaurant with a friend. Also very good lunch special Sesame Chicken, fried rice, Rangoons. I moved in the neighborhood a couple years ago and just recently discovered it. What a find! Let's see. They are fast, the portions are generous, there is a ton of flavor in their dishes, and they do not skimp on the ingredients. I just tried their Chinese sausage Lo Mein, and there's as much meat as there are noodles! It takes me 5 minutes by car to get there, and the food is always done when I pick it up, and it is piping hot! There isn't inside dining just yet, but I'm sure by summer it will be open. I have given this place multiple tries now and finally have decided to give it a proper review. General Tso's is my go to dish for Chinese take out, an this place failed miserably on that! Nothing but over cooked chicken with a lot of sauce and breading and yucky skin. Yuck. The lo mien was also horrible. There was just no flavor what so ever and nothing but noodles and what looked to be whatever mysterious vegetable they had lying around. If I wanted to order leftover's I would order leftover's! There saving grace is their hot sour soup. Very tasty. But...... I had one bad experience with it where I ordered a large to go and instead of telling me they only had enough for a small container, they put the left over/bottom of the pot in and filled it up only 3/4 of the way. Talk about shady service! I even watched them do it from behind the counter. Trying to pull a fast one on me. I think NOT! I'm still giving it a solid 2 stars because their egg rolls and ragoon were at least tasty too (other than the tasty soup, that is when they have it available). But in all honestly, nothing special. I can go to any Chinese take out joint and get the same thing any day of the week. So yeah.....If you want good Chinese. this is not the place I recommend. If you want quick Chinese just because your craving it....well maybe rethink it or just settle for the China Inn. read more

Run of the mill Americanized Chinese food. Friendly family run joint that pumps out a lightening lunch. They have a tiny lunch buffet if you want to try various menu choices and you can even pay by the pound and take it to go. Lemme tell ya something. Just because a Chinese restaurant has Mapo Tofu on the menu, doesn't mean they actually HAVE Mapo Tofu. Yuck. This is really only a half-revue, because I never ended up eating here due to the following: I got their menu in the mail and it looked good, so I went to see the place. The building exterior should have been a big red warning, it was grungy. Walking up to the front door you notice the absolutely filthy windows that are so dirty and smeared you cant really see through them. I went in and noticed all of the pealing wall paper and filthy floor corners and table feet, then there was the terrible smell permeating the place of rancid fishy frying grease, it almost made me sick--I had to leave. This place is dirty! I have worked in food long enough to know that if the front of the house is this bad then the kitchen is going to be ten times worse. These people clearly have scraped this place together to try and make a buck and nothing else. I find it mind blowing that this "restaurant" can even get a passing score from the Dane Co. We tried China Inn randomly for delivery and it was decent run of the mill Chinese food- much better than Chang Jiang, which I always find so greasy and has upset my stomach. Delivery time was pretty fast, around 35 minutes. Don't expect a gourmet meal, but if this is what you're in the mood for, it's a safe bet. read more
