Stopped in for the first time a few weeks ago for lunch. A range of offerings on their menu-from appetizers to South Indian faves, Indochinese rice, and dosas. I opted for the Kathu Parrota Chicken, medium spice. Even at that level, Thalaivas brought the heat. My dish- South Indian street food made from shredded flatbread (parotta) that is stir-fried with minced chicken, eggs, and a spicy tomato-based gravy was perfectly balanced and flavorful. Service was speedy and efficient and got me out the door in no time. Definitely recommend it for anyone in the neighborhood. read more

I would give 5 stars based on the quality of the food alone, but there were a few things combined that took away a star for me. The first is how little naan comes with each order. In my picture we got both the sweet naan and the garlic naan - over $4 each for only 4 small pieces per order. The second is that they took away our water vase and never came back with another one. This is just a review for the takeout - but the interior is very cute and has sort of an upper and lower level. We got our usual chicken Tikka masala which was not your typical takeout - there were some actual veggies in there (red pepper and onions) and it had a really lovely smoky flavor to it. We also had the milagai podi idli as an appetizer which are basically little rice balls in a tomatoey spice mix and they were very tasty! We finally had the chicken chettinad which is another curry that was less cream-based than the other and we also ordered it a bit spicier as well. Thalaivas Indian N Chinese Kitchen just opened its doors last week. We saw the signs and just randomly stopped by. We tried the onion pakora, and wow, it's amazing! It's even better with that tasty green sauce. We all agree that they have one of the best chicken biryanis in town! You absolutely have to try the Malai Kofta, vegetable dumplings in creamy spiced gravy is just perfection. I didn't know what else to order and asked for advice, the server recommended the Mango Chicken Curry! It's this awesome blend of sweet and savory, with a mango-infused sauce and chicken that's so tender it practically melts in your mouth. Oh, and I can't forget to mention the Ghee Masala Dosa! It's crispy, buttery, and stuffed with a delicious potato filling. The staff were so attentive and caring, and the place is super cute. Such a cute place! I ordered the Mango Chicken Curry with garlic naan, and both were delicious. The curry was creamy, flavorful, and had the perfect balance of sweetness and spice, while the naan was soft, warm, and the perfect companion to soak up every bit of sauce. The food itself was excellent, but I was a little surprised by the cost--especially for lunch. The portion sizes were smaller than expected, and the prices have recently gone up with a $1 upcharge on everything on the menu. I had a lovely solo dinner at Thalaivas in Middleton. I don't get to the west side often and heard good things about their eggplant curry in a reddit thread. It's a new place and not too busy, even on a Friday night. The food was absolutely divine. I adore eggplant and it was served in such an interesting format - quartered with stems attached and then stewed in a rich curry. Incredible food, wide variety of flavors and the staff is so friendly! The staff is also really great about answering any questions too! The spice has been easily altered as needed, but the thing I love is that it's typically spicy food, not too mild! We have dined in and had their food delivered multiple times and both methods have always been wonderful! They do tend to go a little less spicy when NOT dining in, but that makes perfect sense. read more

As an Indian, I don't usually go out for Indian food (my mom's cooking is better), but I decided to give this place a try because I was craving South Indian food (that my mom can't make). I can't speak to their North Indian cuisine, but I absolutely loved the plain dosa, chutneys, and sambar! I also had the Madras coffee, which was delicious as well. Delicious! I spent a lot of time searching for the top Indian food in Madison and this kept popping up. It did not disappoint. The highlights were the mango curry, garlic naan and lollipop chicken. I've been eyeing this place for a few months now and finally had the occasion to visit with family in town. We all enjoyed our food and the portions were a good size. We went over the lunch hour so it wasn't too busy. Service was fast and staff were friendly. The garlic naan was one of our favorite things. This was also my first time trying parotta and I was very pleased! It was buttery and flaky. This is also probably the best chana masala I've had. Wow! what a great food. Authentic taste, Tamilnadu (South Indian) style food. All fresh cooking with fresh and inhouse made ingredients. Ordered Aatu kaal soup, parotta with paya, kizhi parotta, chicken milagu rasam, ambur chicken biryani, thalapakattu goat biryani, chicken lollypop appetizer, carrot halwa, elachi chai. Haven't experienced this kind of authentic taste in a long while. Medium spice level was just perfect. The south indian parotta was not the frozen kind that you normally get. This was fresh made, very flaky and absolutely delicious. Kizhi parotta is cooked in banana leaf and soaked with chicken and salna. The parotta soaks the flavor really well due to the method of cooking. I hope they keep up with the quality in the long haul. read more

This was the worst Indian food I have ever had. Every restaurant I have been always serves basmati rice, not here, cheap bland white rice. It was by far the greasiest Indian food I have ever had. The Naans were dripping, my hands were covered in grease. The dal tadka and the palak paneer were like eating a bowl of greasy, oily soup. The only redeeming factor with those two were the spice profiles. The lamb chops were just ok, but certainly not worth the cost. 70$ plus tip was outrageous for this grease fest.
