This is my new favorite on the east side for Indian! We have been looking for something that compared to our old neighborhood place and this did and more. We tried some naans - Garlic and I believe their special naan. It was soooo good. Still thinking about the special naan. I got saag paneer and my partner got chicken Marsala. Both were delicious. First time here. Came with a friend for the lunch buffet. It's a strip mall, with a parking lot out front. It has a main dining area when you come in, and the buffet was set up in another room. Got greeted and set up with water, and a place setting. Ordered an ice tea too. There was an excellent selection at the buffet. Everything was well organized, and labeled. My friend warned me about anything that might have been too spicy. I took a small sample of most of the items, including the coconut soup. Most of the food that I tried was hot, and mildly seasoned. I especially enjoyed the Gobhi Manchurian and the Samosas. I suppose for a buffet is was good, but I would want to come back and get a fresh plate of some of the better items. Super good service throughout the entire meal. On the way out they have a mix of fennel at the front desk. Learned it's eaten as a breath freshener, and it works. Nice touch. read more

I am extremely frustrated, as I was denied entrance today and asked "What is all that?" with a gesture towards my walker and the basket of farmers market items i had resting on top of the seat as i walked. The lady who stopped me at the door said they don't allow carts inside... I had merely wanted to order takeout... and then leave, but either way i made it very clear it wasn't a cart and that it was in fact a WALKER i use to walk with, only to be denied entrance by 3 staff who all shook their heads no. I'm not sure if they thought i was homeless or what, but it definitely soured my experience. I can't help it, that i am disabled and i have no car and have to take the bus/ walk up steep hills to get to their restaurant. I should also add this violates the laws regarding Accessibility requirements: The ADA mandates that restaurants provide accessible routes, entrances, and dining areas for people with mobility devices, including walkers and wheelchairs. This involves ensuring doorways are wide enough, paths of travel within the restaurant are sufficiently wide, and seating areas are accessible. Preventing discrimination: The ADA makes it illegal to exclude, deny services, or segregate individuals with disabilities from other customers. The naan here is a spiritual experience. It came out piping hot, freshly cooked, and dripping in butter. Their masala, butter chicken, biryani, and lamb korma are probably the best in madison. I also like their vegetable pakora appetizer, masala chai tea, and ras malai dessert are also killer. Service is kind and prompt- the manager once gave me a heaping plate of ras malai because he recognized me placing the takeout order. I made a mistake in booking for my birthday party and took 11 people to this restaurant with zero notice (obviously no reservation) and they seated us immediately and waited on us with no delay, delivering meals lightning fast despite the unexpected crowd. My husband and I decided to try Swad Indian restaurant located in Monona, WI after hearing great reviews! The restaurant was small but very busy inside when we arrived for dinnertime! We were immediately greeted with a really great, friendly, and funny server! Upon checking their menu, Swad has really great solid vegetarian options such as vegetarian samosas, Sag Paneer, and Alhoo Gobhi. Swad also has a large selection of different meat curries everything from lamb, goat, chicken, beef, and seafood curries along with a large selection of different nan/baked bread! They also have some great Tandoori options such as the chicken, salmon, or mixed grill Tandoori. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Shahi Korma with a must have side of cheese nan! Both the dishes were delicious but the chicken was in Chicken Tikka Masala was slightly bland/dry. The cheese nan was hot , fresh, and had nice crisp on the outside! I was so full after eating our dinner but I hear Swad makes some amazing homemade mango ice cream dessert! Overall, their food was pretty good but not the best Indian cuisine I have tried in the local area! I have had way better Indian cuisine than Swad with way better Indian flavors with more in depth spice/richness but the food from Swad wasn't bad. I would really like to come back to try more entrees from Swad or check out their lunch buffet which is Friday - Sunday 11:15am - 2:30pm to sample more of what they offer! read more

We went here on New Year's Day. Was a bit taken back by there being a buffet being served that day, but we gave it a shot. Boy was I happy we did. The buffet was amazing. So many freshly prepared authentic Indian dish's to choose from. Everything we tried was fantastic. The service was on point and very friendly. The owner stopped by our table and chatted with us for a while. The facility is a bit misleading from the road. The inside is clean and well up kept. When it comes to Indian food in Madison, Swad has always been our favorite. We were delighted when we heard that they had finally re-opened their lunch buffet. The location is pleasant, divided into two dining rooms (with the buffet in the back room). The service has always been good. But the food is where they really excel - there are many Indian restaurants in Madison, but I think the food at Swad is the best of all of them. I particularly love their malai kofta and their coconut soup. Their buffet is large, with a good selection of dishes, and their range of chutneys is pretty comprehensive too. If you're in the mood for Indian at lunchtime, you can't beat Swad! read more

It's one of those days. I need something really tasty to distract me of recent events. So i figured, try a new restaurant. First time trying Swad and order my usual goat biriyani to evaluate their food. The place is nice and clean. Every table along the wall has a bottle of hand sanitizer and staff where wearing masks so it felt safe to eat indoor. Staff also assign guests to tales keeping an empty table between guests. It was a busy night. I counted 6 occupied tables and lots of carry outs. Good value meal. Papadum is complimentary. I like that and the three sauces were great. Onions were still crunchy and had that onion spiciness. Mint was good. Tamarind has the be right sourness. Mix all three onto the papadum for a nice be starter snack. Goat biriyani was ok. I asked for mild and it was still spicy for me. What i was disappointed with is the lack of spices. Not spicy but spices. It tasted like spicy, wet curried rice with pieces of goat meat and bone. I would have preferred a drier texture and flavorful taste. Finished my meal with a cup of hot masala tea. This was good. I enjoy the mild taste of the masala spice in the tea. read more

Little bit torn here. Food (dinner) was decent, good standard indian fare but nothing exceptional. My lamb vindaloo was moderate spicy as ordered but didn't have a great depth of flavor underneath the spice. The chicken tandoori was a little disappointing, too dry for my taste though with the sauce it would have been ok. They do appear to have a lunch buffet which is great. I did really like the special naan, really good flavors. The people were fairly nice / inviting but the service was confused and odd. They asked a couple times whether we were ready to order, when we said yes they wandered away, presumably to get a pad to write the order down, and never returned. Wasn't really bad but average service. The interior of the restaurant was pretty standard strip mall fare with some art on the walls. Overall there are better choices in the area, at least on the west side. read more

After a long day of moving our daughter in to her apt., we decided to try out our first Indian restaurant in Madison as she starts to get her bearings. This place was amazing. First, the hospitality. We were tired, we were a little unkempt, we were about twenty minutes from being hangry. We walked in thirty minutes before the posted closing time. It was chill inside - a few families were eating and chatting, no loud music or TV screens flashing. (I am grateful for this!) The man who greeted us let us know they would be closing and wanted to know if that was a problem for us. He was very apologetic. We told him we knew our order and were ready to roll. He laughed and we were in business. We ordered rajmah, shahi paneer, plain curd, and chapathi. While waiting for our order, a server brought out pappadum and chutneys. It could have been the tired talking, but we have never had a better onion chutney. I want it on everything. The coriander (or mint?) chutney was also so fresh and flavorful. Our orders came out and everything was delicious. My daughter said that it tasted like our home cooking and that, despite the 30 minute drive, she had found her "place" for food when she is missing home. That's a pretty solid compliment to the chef and the staff who provided an excellent meal with kindness and efficiency. I look forward to many meals at Swad in the coming years! read more

The only problem I had with my meal was that you do not know the recipe of kadhai chicken. I have never in my life, ever had kadhai chicken that has cauliflower, broccoli, Edamame and french beans. I'm sorry but this is absolutely preposterous. Butter chicken was nice, paneer butter masala (gravy which is same as the butter chicken) was okay but the paneer was hard as a rock. Chicken 65 is a BIG no no!!! Veggie platter was nice, really good! I ordered salted buttermilk but really it was yogurt with masala. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because we weren't checked in on during our entrees to make sure everything was good or if we needed refills on our drinks. The food and service here is very good. Their latest business practices, NOT good. In fact, I would say deceptive and dishonest. I took a party of 8 here on a Saturday night. We had an awesome time. My receipt came, and I gave them my credit card, and when the credit card receipt came back WITHOUT MY ORIGINAL RECEIPT, it was for a higher price. They had started adding a 3% charge for use of credit cards. It's not entirely uncommon these days, BUT, (a) they never mentioned it, (b) it wasn't printed on the receipt, (c) it wasn't printed in the menu, (d) there was no sign on the door. When I complained, they pointed to a tiny sign on the cash register. Very bad way to treat customers. When they learn this and adjust their practices, I might go back. But not now. read more

We have visited Swad a few times and have always had a great experience. We were SO excited to see the lunch buffet come back on Fridays! I personally love so many of their dishes so it is hard to order off the menu otherwise I end up with way too much food, so the buffet is perfect. To our surprise everything was the perfect temperature, flavor, and consistency, which I assume is not easy for a buffet. We are even using them as a caterer for a private event we have coming up next month. They were so helpful in talking through the different options and helping us get to the right amount and variety of food for our group. I had a conference in Madison, so while I was in town I met up with some family for dinner. My cousin, a certified chef, recommended this restaurant because he said the food was delicious. When I arrived with my family, we were one of the few people there. That allowed the staff to really pay attention to providing quality service. They cleared plates appropriately and kept the refills coming. We had a couple of kids and the staff was super accommodating. BUT THE FOOD. It is with no exaggeration when I say that I still think about it frequently in the weeks since my experience. Their butter chicken is to die for. 10/10. Their samosa chat was tangy and delightful. But the icing on the cake was the naan combo. There were three different flavors in a healthy portion of naan for only $12. I couldn't tell you what flavors they were, but every single flavor slapped. I was only in town for three days, and I kid you not, I placed a pick up order for me to enjoy when I got home. I'm always going to include a stop at Swad on the itinerary for my upcoming trips to Madison. Overall, 12/10 definitely worth the try. read more

I had the pleasure of introducing a fried to Indian cuisine and Swad turned out to be the best random roll of the dice decision! I was craving Aloo Saag, but was told that it cannot be made vegan. I was almost ready to leave! *insert pouty sad face* Instead, I ordered some of my other favs... SAMOSAS - You can't go wrong with these potato-filled pastries. Usually it's a standard staple appetizer for me, but somehow Swad turned water into wine with these seasoned-like-never-before pieces of fried heaven. I wanted badly to lick the dish. BHINDI MASALA - seasoned by the GAWDS! The okra, the vegetables - all cooked to perfection. Excellent dish! GOBI MANCHURIAN - I'm not a cook so it amazes me how the cauliflower can be so tender yet the breading so crisp, yet so saucy at the same time. How, Swad?!! Excelente!! POORI - my favorite bread: light, airy, fluffy, with a slight crisp. Delicious! Friend ordered the SHRIMP TANDOORI and said it was very good. The restaurant is spacious and clean. The restrooms were clean. The service was great. The warm towels that they provide for your hands after your meal is a classy touch. I refrained from the urge to put it on my face and take a nap. Despite my being a little peeved that they couldn't make a vegan Aloo Saag (their saag is pre-made with dairy), this place blew my mind. Everything I had I would order again, and again, and again. They even give you FREE pappadum and sauces to munch on while you await your meal. The sauces are a trio of tamarind, cilantro, and a tomato/onion mix. Try all 3 mixed together; it was delicious! I started a new job a couple of months ago, and the first time I forgot my lunch I asked my coworkers about places to eat nearby. Without hesitation, they told me to go to Swad. This is definitely the favorite spot to grab food for our team. I've been here twice now, and while it looks like they have a really extensive menu, I've gone with my 'go to' Indian food order both times - I don't usually have much time to peruse their offerings when I realize at the last minute that I don't have a lunch! The first time I got the baingan bartha with medium spice - I wasn't aware that they actually take the spice seriously here! I usually order medium dishes and expect them to be mild at best, but this packed some heat! It was very flavorful and delicious. AND I went with the mild the second time around! :D I only have about 30 minutes for lunch, so I'm usually in a bit of a hurry, but they've always been very fast (usually my quicker than the time they give me when I call my order in). They do appear to be open for dine in eating (although I'm not ready to brave this yet), and the staff is wearing masks. It seems like a nice place to visit, so maybe someday!
