Keema naan
Sho R.

This place has dine in only during lunch hours. I was there for dinner. So I had to take out. Owner was a nice person. Take out boxes were packed very well. Chef special naan deserves a special attention. It is a cheese naan. Keema naan was good as well. Medium spice level was the right level for me. Spicy was a little bit higher than what was enjoyable. Chicken Shahjahani and butter chicken were my curries. I liked butter chicken more. Samosa and kheer was decent.

Garlic Naan and shrimp vindaloo.. amazing!!!

Garlic Naan is the best I ever had. Shrimp vindaloo also amazing. Great food, great prices.

Coming off a Yelp hiatus with a review for a restaurant that could get some more love from the Madison community! Great food and a great (family-run?) restaurant! I ordered takeout from Royal last weekend on a Saturday night. The place was absolutely dead both times when I walked in -- first to pick up the food and 30 minutes later when I realized our order was missing rice. It's a shame because my partner and I really enjoyed our meal, and to be completely honest, the food at Royal is a lot better than some of the more expensive Indian restaurants around town. We ordered butter chicken, garlic naan, chicken 65, vegetable pakora, and samosas. My favorites were the vegetable pakora and samosas (huge with lots of filling and my personal favorite - big potato chunks). My partner really liked the butter chicken and found the sauce to be a perfect combination of savory and sweet. We both agreed to skip on the garlic naan next time though - a little bland. The person at the counter was very sweet too. She was very apologetic when we told her our order was missing rice and kindly provided us with double the rice portion! Overall, the experience here was great, and I'm looking forward to frequenting this place for Indian food more often!

Decent but not great. For some reason, they use lots of food dye and many of the curry dishes are indistinguishable.

Ordered meals, both were meh, skimpy on vegetables, overcooked chicken, blah sauce. Naan partly burnt, partly undercooked. Disappointed

I've tried most of the indian places in madison and this one stands out --prices are very reasonable for such high quality food.

The items were preordered by the host - sesame chicken, naan, biriyani, plain rice, saag paneer and butter chicken. I had planned on skipping the meal because I have celiac disease and was worried about transmission of substances I couldn't eat. However I asked to speak to one of the men who'd set it up. He told me to avoid the naan and sesame chicken but that everything else was gluten free. His confidence assured me and so I was able to try the meal. The food could have used a little more spice but was delicious. There were huge chunks of paneer which I appreciated. I am so glad that the staff was knowledgeable about their menu. I have now got the confidence to visit the restaurant and try out the other gf options.

Next thing I knew I was in the parking lot and searching for Swagat. Because it was a Monday night it had only 3-4 tables of customers, so my order was ready before I was even thinking about it taking too long. The service was very friendly and personable as well. Suggestions were made while I was trying to decide what the last Indian dish I last had, and I'm relieved he suggested what he did. Vindaloo. Spicy beef and make it your top spice level. He started to caution me, but I was very intent about my capsaicin intake. Dall was me secondary items, yellow, and only at the middle point for heat. Plain naan. Very simple and direct. Upon returning home the scent was enormously delicious and inviting. The delicate long grain rice was perfectly cooked and such a subtle item to be actually a star on the dish, rather than a simple starch to take up space. Potatoes were large and delicate while firm. Beef, velvety soft and still not losing its texture. The yellow lentils were a bit different than I'd expected. I last enjoyed them ages ago and my recall was that they still held some of their form. These were cooked further down, not in an unpleasant or overly aggressive manner, just different than I was expecting. Delicious. Beautifully colorful, saffron(?) I'm unsure. Naan. Another item that deserves a starring role in a meal. This was far better than any of the recent times at either of the two nearby Indian restaurants that I've been spending more time than I now think I plan to in the coming months and years. Tonight I'm enjoying the food from last nights dinner. Should've taken some pics. But take out meals aren't artfully prepared. So they don't really matter anyway.

Tip: If you pay with cash, I believe they give you a 10% discount. Service: Came around a weekday night and it fairly easy to dine in. Group dining comes with rice to share if you order the curry or tikk Onion and black pepper naan: Plenty of caramelized onions for you to get the savory flavor. Comes in about 3-4 slices of naan. Great to share with a group. Chicken Tikka Masala: Always a great staple dish to always order. Chicken was soft and the tomato creamy sauce was flavorful. *Unique dishes Garlic Cheese Naan: I was very excited to try this since they stuff the naan with Wisconsin cheese. It added a bit of a savory flavory and had the right amount of cheese. Pretty much tasted like a light mozzarella pancake. Comes in about 3-4 slices of naan. Great to share with a group. Egg Curry (spice: level 4 medium plus): Comes with 3 eggs? cooked in onion, garlic, ginger and spices. Basically just hard boiled eggs and sauce was similar to less flavorful version of Tikka Masala. A bit underwhelming since I thought they would have done something besides place a hard boil egg. Spice pretty similar to light Siracha level.

I was shocked to see a low rating for what is a fabulous local small business serving incredibly delicious Indian/Nepali food. Our party of 9 were the only patrons at 6pm on a Tuesday evening and we were very well taken care of by the owners of the establishment. Most of the party are vegetarians, and thoroughly enjoyed the Tofu Buff with rice. The Baingan Bhartha and Paneer Masala were both extremely flavorful and so tasty! The other half of the party eats meat, and we had the Chicken Bhartha, the Chicken Mango (soooooo delicious), Chicken Tikka Masala, and Shrimp Korma. Everything was well seasoned, and I was so impressed to have such authentic food out in Madison (Los Angeles has no shortage of good Indian food, and this place easily ranks up there with them.) Love the way their Nepali roots work their way into the flavors of the dishes. We also had some mango lassi (delicious) and of course, garlic and aloo naan. No meal is complete without it!!! I loved that they bring out continuous portions of rice for free. THAT is something you never see in LA. I wish I got pictures, but I was too busy eating. Give this place a chance, it's beyond great.
