We'd just finished an absolutely amazing dinner at Dante and were wandering around before our Village Vanguard show. We happened upon this location of Magnolia Bakery, so popping in was basically not an option. Obviously I knew I wanted their Banana Pudding, but they also had on offer a Banana Pudding Cookie, so we just had to get both. And yeah, they're both phenomenal. I found the cookie maybe a bit too sweet but the flavors were delicious. But that pudding remains an incredible, delicious concoction. Apparently Magnolia Bakery is coming to Canada. It's been over 17 years since my first Yelp review of Magnolia Bakery. Unlike other foodie lemmings at the time, I wasn't caught up in the cupcake craze started by this iconic shop. Remember when this was one of Carrie's hangouts on "Sex & the City"? That exposure triggered nearly 70 locations worldwide. Jamie W and I were back in the neighborhood after a tipple at Julius'. I have to admit I never understood the appeal of the cupcakes. However, I had never tried their banana pudding before, and I liked how you can grab a readymade carton from the fridge and pay for it right away. Meanwhile, a lot of self-absorbed women were crowded around the cupcake display waiting for their little boxes. We took our stash across the street to the mostly deserted playground.. Ah, so the pudding was the draw all along. We grabbed two, the $6.25 Chocolate Peanut Butter (Photo 5) and the $5.75 Classic Banana (Photo 4). They both have lighter-than-expected whipped cream and sliced bananas. Of course the classic layers Nilla vanilla wafers, while the other applies Oreo cookie crumbles and chocolate chunks. No complaints about either, though the classic still wins. FOOD - 4 stars..indulgent treats, aren't they? I finally had a chance to try the famous banana pudding! They have a fridge inside with all the banana puddings, and I purchased a small which was a good size for one person, though you could definitely share it between two people if you just want a little sweet treat. The pudding was super soft and fluffy with a strong banana flavor. It was pretty sweet for me, and I would've preferred it a little less sweet, but it was still delicious. I loved how it was creamy, light, and cohesive. It was a small shop for grab and go, and it was early in the day, so there was no wait. Staff were friendly. What I Ordered via Uber Eats: - Classic Mini Cupcake Assortment: usually I do one cupcake, but tried the assortment as planned to share with coworkers. Decent flavor, but I think I like the full size cupcakes as a better texture and frosting ratio in my opinion. I've heard SO MUCH about Magnolia Bakery's banana pudding from ever since I first moved to NYC, and I'm glad that I got to try it recently. This shop in West Village is very small and there's no seating. On a sunny day, you can expect it to be cramped. Nonetheless, we were able to grab one of their small banana pudding from the fridge and pay for it fairly quickly (even if it was chaotic in the store). The banana pudding was amazing. Personally, I'm not big on banana flavored desserts (it just remains solo for me, not mixed in desserts), so I skipped it.
