I purchased 2 mini sizes and the specialty pudding which was apple crumble. I normally do not care for apples BUT.... This was incredible. The apples were not caramelized and over cooked but rather crisp and cold while still cooked. It gave the texted of biting into a pear. I love Magnolia's Bakery, it is devastating they closed the DC location during Covid so this is always my favorite stop before I get on the train. The service is fast and even when there is a line, they move quick. The store runs out of the bread pudding often so if you are holding out on the visit until your train ride then you might not get to try the different flavors of bread pudding. read more

Since I had a few minutes before my train track was even going to be assigned, I went searching for Magnolia Bakery upon my arrival at Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station. It wasn't in the Food Hall. Turns out it is its own little shop (not a stall), located just kiddy corner to the Amtrak counter within the glass roofed hall! By the time I entered, the other customers had already been served. If I remember correctly, the medium was more than twice the portion of the small for less than double the price, so I ordered a medium portion of their specialty banana pudding to go - strawberry shortcake banana pudding. I can't believe I have never written a review for Magnolia Bakery. I have been buying cake slices for my train trips here for at least 5 years now. My go to is the chocolate cake with white icing. the slices I get have always been good. I am creature of habit and get the same things. They have a great set up for plasticware, and napkins. Which is great because that saves me a trip somewhere in the station to get a fork or walk to the dining car to get a fork on the train. Customer service can be a hit or miss. Generally I have felt a little rushed when I am there, and because of that I never really have had a moment to really see what they offer. Always pick up some banana pudding when in nyc. This place was great because of its location inside the station and there were no lines.

I got a banana pudding cookie and a blondie here and was sadly underwhelmed by both. They weren't soft or chewy, so they didn't feel fresh. The banana pudding cookie definitely tasted like banana, but wasn't mind-blowing in flavor. The blondie had chocolate chips in it and there is no sign indicating this. Very disappointing for those of us who choose blondies specifically because we don't like the chocolate-y-ness of brownies. Maybe I could give this place one more shot and try the banana pudding they are known for, but I definitely wouldn't get any of their baked goods again. read more

And by the time we dug into it on the train, we wished it were colder (as opposed to room temperature). However, it was (as any Asian parent would compliment a dessert) "not too sweet." But I had been out with some New Jersey friends who needed to go back home via Penn Station, and we had stopped in Moynihan for a bit before that. The cashier I had was very nice and friendly and the pudding was very enjoyable (ate it when I was back in Brooklyn). Fantastic baked goods! Stopped by the Columbus Circle location and Penn Station location. The hummingbird cake and carrot cake were good, but the confetti cake was my favorite. Not a fan of banana pudding but they have so many other goodies. Every time I come to New York, I always have to stop at this particular location because they have these delicious blueberry crumbles. I usually buy their entire stock (which is usually about 4-5...I'm not that greedy lol).
