I'm honestly so torn writing this because the food at Ferrara Bakery & Cafe was actually great, but what I witnessed in their Little Italy shop was beyond revolting and I can't stay quiet about it. A kid at the table right next to us started violently vomiting all over the booth and the table. It wasn't just a one-time thing either; it kept happening. The worst part was the staff--they just stood there at the line watching like they were paralyzed. Since they didn't even have napkins on the tables, we had to watch the poor dad literally soak up puddles of puke with the little girl's own winter coat. It was heartbreaking and gross all at the same time. Pretty soon, this thick, sour stench just took over the whole section. It was the kind of smell that hits the back of your throat and stays there. People were literally flagging down their servers to pay their tabs early just so they could escape the smell, and only then did the staff finally decide to acknowledge what was happening.But here's the absolute kicker: once the family left, they did a pathetic two-second 'wipe down' and sat a brand new group of people in that same booth less than two minutes later. I was sitting there in total shock. I could literally see chunks of vomit still dripping down the side of the seat cushions and onto the floor while this new family was sitting there, totally clueless, opening up their menus. It was so dishonest and honestly dangerous from a health standpoint. I definitely won't be back. It's a shame because the kitchen clearly knows what they're doing, but the management and cleaning standards are nonexistent read more

Very much a tourist trap in nyc lol but still an experience. My friend and I stopped in after a day of shopping in Chinatown and we got two coffees and an Italian cheesecake. Somehow that equaled 40 dollars. Now I live in north Jersey with access to a ton of great Italian bakeries and maybe that spoils me but this was a very mid experience. The coffee was alright, nothing that took my breath away. The Italian cheesecake was just ok. Service was good, nothing over the top. The place itself is beautiful. It's a good spot to just sit and relax for a while during a busy day in the city but it definitely comes at a cost! read more

Still going strong with great quality pastries. Took a quick walk from my office to get some steps in and got 1/4 of rainbow cookies and 2 connolis to nibble the next couple of days with my husband. So good, flavors don't change, what did increase was the cost of course. It was 8.00 for 5 very small rainbow cookies :/ but I was ok with it since it was a treat. The bakery is pretty, nice size for NYC, clean and always great service. Since it was mid day it was not crowded. read more

Curbside service was not the friendliest, but fast; I was just picking up some pizza next door and felt a craving for a cannoli. I had no idea what I stumbled upon!!! How had I grown up in this lovely city and not had a Ferrara's cannoli?? This was the best cannoli I've had in a long while... granted I've left the city for years and was just visiting... but the last time I had a cannoli, I was in Boston's North End when a friend brought me a "famous" cannoli and it was yuck... NOT a good cannoli!!! Ferrara's IS an amazing cannoli. My dad, the quintessential NY'er loves this cannoli. Crispy and light yet strong enough to withstand the yummy filling without crumbling. Tucked away in Little Italy this cute little space is a great place for afterndinner drinks and dessert. Stopped into Ferrara Bakery with a friend after an afternoon exploring Chinatown and Little Italy. It's a large, bustling space where you can grab pastries, and a variety of other desserts to go or sit down in the café. There's lots of seating and the atmosphere feels lively and classic. We had already eaten, so we just picked up a hand-dipped, chocolate-covered cannoli to go. There was a bit of a line but moved very quickly, and the service was efficient. I ate the cannoli when I got home, it was fresh, delicious, and my first time trying one dipped in chocolate. Definitely worth it! Located in the heart of "Little Italy" Ferrari's has been in business for 130 years. They were one of the first bakery's in New York. You can get almost any Italian deserts you've ever heard of here. They offer gelato, all kinds of pastries, breakfast pizza and French toast on their brunch menus. They will ship nationwide and will cater to your every need. I stopped by for some gelato. They are a little pricey although you get to enjoy all the tourists in the rates. I would recommend them for at least a one time experience read more

OMG! What happened to Ferrara's? I haven been there for many years but you used to always be able to trust them for a good cannoli. Yesterday I bout 2 plain, 2 chocolate covered for much too much money. It would have been ok had they been edible. The plain one has a hard crust and was stuffed with something that tasted mildly of chemicals. Certainly not traditional cannoli filling. The chocolate one was completely inedible. Four of us tasted one and spit it out. I can't even describe what they did to make it taste that bad but it was awful. It's sad when another tradition bites the dust. read more

My husband and I stopped here on our walk in Little Italy to try a cannoli and some coffees. The cappuccino was delicious and the cannoli so good we ordered a second one. Service was slow, but it was nice to take a break from our walking and gaze at the beautiful baked goods on display. What a neat place, family-owned for 5 generations! Lobster tail or else!!!! TRUST! The lobster tail was one of the best patries I've EVER had! And that distinction includes the likes of pastries from cities like Paris, Copenhagen, Lisbon, and Barcelona! Ferrara you rock!!!! My only regret was not buying more from here. The lobster tail is a long, cone-shaped pastry that is soft on the inside and beautifully crispy on the outside. Inside this behemoth is a wealth of delicious, robust cream. The lobster tail is a showstopper. As I stood on the street savoring my first bite, someone from a neighboring business yelled out, "Whoooooaaa, what is THAT?!". After breaking down the situation, as cream oozed off the side of my face (hard pause), the guy exclaimed, "Oh, I'm definitely getting one of those!" We also had some delicious pignoli cookies, that we also wish we had gotten more of. We decided to pop in right before we left NYC to grab some of their Honey Almond Pistachio nougat....dear Lord...as Busta Rhymes would say, "GET YOU SOME!". Get some for friends too because they'll love it. We unfortunately didn't get a chance to try their gelato, but I certainly will the next time. The only thing that I would say is, be careful if you're gluten free or have Celiac's disease. The pignoli cookies are made in- house, along with the other glutenous pastries, but are supposedly gluten free. When I was asking questions to see if I'd buy some pignoli's for a gluten sensitive friend, the person behind the counter didn't know what Celiac's was. As I was attempting to inquire about cross-contamination, the associate just continued to assert they were gluten free. In this case, I decided not to take the chance, as I didn't want them getting sick. Overall, I can't wait to get back. I just hope they're accurately describing their gluten free products. This Italian bakery was recommended to us by the front desk at NobleDen Hotel, where we stayed. When they said their pastries were INCREDIBLE, they weren't exaggerating! The bakery was filled with Italian goodies: pastries, Italian nougats, gelato, espresso, and even Italian limoncello. It had a touristy vibe, with a gelato case at the storefront and a plethora of trinkets for sale upon entering. The morning of our departure, we quickly grabbed a sfogliatelle, which is a flaky pastry resembling a lobster tail, but half the size. It was filled with ricotta cheese and candied citrus peels. Very yummy and not at all oily. The pastry was so crispy and flaky with just a hint of sweetness from the ricotta filling. Truly delicate and a delight to eat. It reminds me of one of the bakeries I went to in Sicily. Everything is great there. You can't go wrong with whatever you order, it will taste good and be authentic. As for the rainbow cookies, I love them from here. They are right at the top along side my favorite bakeries for rainbow cookies. They are moist, not too sweet, and have a strong almond flavor. Third time's a charm! After major letdowns in two other Little Italy caffes, we decided to give Ferrara's a final try and while not the best cannoli we ever had, it was way better than the other two Little Italy caffes and I wouldn't have minded spending $8 for this one. Ferrara's shell had a nice color to it, it wasn't hard and overcooked and it gently cracked when you bit into it. The cream was nice and thick, but still a little too sweet, but that might have been because of a little too much powdered sugar. I think these caffes could all benfit from going back to their roots and returning to pure, good quality ingredients like grandma used, and maybe get some imported flour from Italy to make these, because they are just not as good as they used to be. read more

If there was a 3.5, that would be my vote! Overall, this boils down to the fact that while were pastries that I really liked, there were also some that I didn't, but that's totally just my personal preference. Initially the service wasn't very friendly so that could have also tainted my experience. The interior was quite vibrant & elegant with clear displays of all the Italian pastries & confections. Here's what I tried as a baker and blogger (@sowmthingsweet on IG): - Lobster tail: Generously filled, with not too sweet custard & the exterior was flakey. - Almond Milk Mocha (w/dairy whip): SO decadent. The cocoa was clearly high quality & tones of coffee were present without being dominant. - Tiramisu: Flavor on point but the texture of the ladyfingers was a bit chewy & too soaked for my taste. - NY Cheesecake: Solid cheesecake, not too sweet and a good level of tang. - Cannolis: Classic Italian fried shell filled w/ a light ricotta filling. The original was solid, but not a fan of the chocolate chip. - Rainbow Italian Cookies: Beautiful tri-color treat, but the flavor was not for me. - Sfogliatella: The filling was nearly identical to the lobster tail, so I wouldn't get both. If you prefer a very crispy exterior, then go with this one although this did taste a bit dry for me. - Mille Fueille: Didn't like this one mainly because of the icing that was poured on top which tasted artificial & had a goopy texture. Ferrara has always been one of my favorite bakeries for Italian pastries. The moment you walk in, you're greeted with the sweet aroma of freshly baked cookies, cannoli, and espresso... it's an experience that instantly brings you into the heart of Little Italy. I always make it a point to stop by during the holidays season when the place feels extra magical. The lights, decorations, and festive crowd make it a special spot to enjoy the holidays. My absolute favorite is their rainbow cookies -- soft, flavorful, and layered perfectly with just the right amount of chocolate and a slight taste of toasted almond from the almond paste. They taste exactly like the classic Italian ones I grew up with in Bensonhurst, which makes it all the more nostalgic. I've tried plenty of other pastries too, from the tiramisu to the lobster tails, and they've all been consistently excellent. Note that the lobster tail is huge! It does get very packed during the holidays, so seating can be tricky at times. Still, I've been there several times after 8 p.m. and was usually able to sit and enjoy everything without the big crowds. On our 3rd day in NYC, we had breakfast at Ferrara, a cafe/bakery in Little Italy which has been in business since 1892. Both hubby and I chose a breakfast plate that has a side of zucchini fries. Omg, those were to sooo delicious! The breakfast sandwich was really tasty as well. We were the first sit in customers as we didn't realize they didn't open until 9am. Our server Carmelo (who spoke Italian) was such a gentleman. This place surely reminded me of Italy in many ways, including the ambiance. Bathroom was upstairs and was pretty pleasant. Later in the day, we came back with friends for snacks/dessert and coffee. Their gelato and cakes are awesome! The sfogiatella was a bit disappointing as it was stale. I still give them 5 stars but it's really more like 4.75. read more

Still a must stop when in New York City for a little touch of Italy! Unfortunately, the challenge here is the pricing that has gotten really off the charts expensive with a reduced selection of inventory. Good service, friendly people, and always feels like home. Stop in for table service, to go orders, or even order online if you don't live in the area. In business for over 100 years, this little bakery offers some nostalgia in what is left of the little Italy area in lower Manhattan. The interior is still warm with finished woods and brass that gives it a cozy feel. If you stop in at this bakery, you can easily walk to Chinatown and have a multicultural experience. read more
