I heard that Frenchette Bakery had a great seasonal hot chocolate, so I went in on a Saturday morning. The location is interesting, like the inside of a building with a cafe window but they have made the most out of the unconventional layout. The place was full of children and puppies, so it was a very cute start to the day. The hot chocolate was exactly what I wanted, and it reminded me of one I had in Paris earlier this year! I asked for the marshmallow on the side and they were so kind and accommodating! The pastries were very well done. First impressions: a cute little shop hidden inside one of the buildings downtown. I almost missed it. Inside there's cute little tables with benches that was really fun to sit at. Baristas were really very nice and didn't laugh at my pronunciation of "kween-ammans" The Noms: hot chocolate was good, rich and thick and the perfect balance of sweet and bitter... maybe just a tad too bitter than I prefer, but still good. The toasted marshmallow was the highlight.... Probably second only to the toasted marshmallow that I had at Rigor Hill Market (still my favorite cup of hot chocolate)... I wish the marshmallow was a bit meltier, but it could be because the hot chocolate was warm and not hot. I still enjoyed it. The kouign-amman was delicious... flakey on the outside and buttery and soft on the inside, perfect caramelization. In Conclusion: would def recommend this spot for hot chocolate. Finally tried their viral hot chocolate and would say that it's my second favorite hot chocolate so far. The hot chocolate drink part would definitely rival caffe panna and the marshmallow adds a very interesting flavor. However I would say together it was too sweet for me. This bakery is inside a large structure, the entrance to which wasn't obvious as it looks like you are walking into an office building (which I assume you are). There is a window inside that offers pastries and loaves, and a few somewhat impromptu seats. I found a vegan option which was partially coconut based and had some pearled sugar and chocolate chips; this sort of bakery doesn't tend to offer a ton of vegan goods in my experience, so I tried it and was impressed. This is where local Tribecans get their coffee, pastries and breads in the morning. The pastries are excellent with a good selection of savory and sweet pastries. Thanks to Yelp, I discovered Frenchette Bakery existed inside the hallway of an office building. My doctor is around the corner where I usually have morning appointments.... Already 8mo pregnant and 15+ appointments in, I am mourning all the croissants I could've eaten if I had done my research sooner. Lots of fun pastries, small pizzas, freshly baked bread, and fresh coffee. There's also unique seating nooks all the way down the hall of the building where you can sit and enjoy your food. A hidden little gem located in the randomest building but thank GOODNESS for Yelp and always helping us find the local gems. It's the cutest little most unassuming bakery with a pretty cool setup meant for you to just enjoy the little moments more on the go and in a casual way. From incredible boulangerie to pain au chocolat (exactly what I ordered) to not-so-plain croissant made with wildflower honey to twice baked pistachio croissant. The delights are plenty-ful! What amazed me about the pain au chocolat is how it was finally the right ratio with chocolate and croissant. Usually a lot of french bakeries will have a larger croissant and super tiny little strip of chocolate. Call me crazy but the quality of the chocolate here was on another level, it tasked very noir and rich. My husband ordered the canelé, which, at first glance seemed some kind of chocolate something with rum. I think he ordered it for the rum part if you asked me. HOWEVER, this bite was like nothing we've ever experienced. The darkness was from the crisp and brown (buttered?) outter part while the inside was so soft, fluff and airy. While you bit into it you got a loud crisp and crunch that sunk between your teeth but when you made it to the center you were pleasantly surprised at the pillowy feel. The rum sure too was there but as a delicacy and exquisite touch. Highly pricey (to be expected for the high quality and also being in NY) but totally worth it. So many locals come here just to get their daily bread. They come grab a coffee with their dog or grab a quick snack post workout. Perfect little spot and a true gem! read more

I was in the neighborhood for a work convening at the law school and decided to stop in to pick up a quick bite for breakfast. Nestled in the Merchant Square building, you're instantly greeted with the smell of butter, butter baked things, and coffee. They seemed to have mostly regulars there when I arrived around 9am. Frenchette's Galette des Rois is LEGIT. Combining pistachio and Bergamot orange frangipane, Frenchette gave this festive golden pie a new life. The caramelized top completed the buttery deliciousness. It would have been perfect if they reheated the slice for me. But never mind the puff pastry was surprisingly still very flaky with crackling crunchy sound. Compared to their Twice Baked Pistachio Croissant, this Pistachio Galette des Rois was less oily and less sweet. Part of its appeal of course is its semi-hidden location inside the lobby of a 1920s office building in Tribeca. I stopped here for a quick meeting on a Friday afternoon and had a chance to try the pizzette that they serve at lunch time. The cornmeal-crusted dough itself was lovely, although the tomato sauce and mozzarella toppings were not especially memorable. Twice Baked Pistachio Croissant: I am IN LOVE with this croissant. The Croissant is buttery and flaky. The sicilian pistachio crunches on top is heavenly! It's toasted to perfection, great crunch with a strong pistachio flavour. The pistachio filling inside is not overly sweet, it has a more subtle pistachio flavour but the purpose of it is mainly to add some sweetness to the croissant, to elevate the nuttiness from the pistachio crunches. Unfortunately I was never able to try Arcade Bakery, but Frenchette which took over the space in 2020 has been absolutely delightful. It's a small space hidden inside an office building on Church St but there is enough seating and always a steady stream of patrons. I absolutely love their viennoiserie-- everything is flaky, buttery sheer perfection. I always come for their pain au chocolat ($6.50) and egg savories ($9) but they have a variety of breads and pizzettes available as well. Their pain au chocolat is made with manjari crème which makes the chocolate oddly acidic and fruity. It's interesting and keeps the pastry from being overly heavy as it is PERFUMED with quality French butter. If one exists I probably don't want to know about it because this one is outstanding (and it is priced accordingly!). This pistachio twice baked is the prettiest croissant I've ever laid eyes on. Frenchette Bakery is hidden in an office building, which was the home of Arcade Bakery, one of my favorite pastry spots and I was so upset when they closed. It's a new bakery from the Frenchette team. The options were limited but it's good that it didn't take us too long to make up our decisions. We had their Twice Baked Pistachio Croissant, Kougin Amann, Blueberry Scone and Iced & hot Latte for our first try. Our favorite was the Croissant. In these days of Covid, the absence of office workers is deafening, as I walked to this bakery, located in Tribeca, mere steps away from the Foley Square courthouses and City Government buildings. What is truly gratifying is that Frenchette Bakery continues to exist. Located in the lobby of an office building next to Worth Street, Frenchette marches on in the tradition of Arch Bakery that preceded it. The baked goods are not only of a very high quality, but the offerings are very innovative. If you are looking for something different, this is the right place. I had the savory egg and market green, (only a vague idea of what I was getting). It was a tiny egg with a deep rich orange yolk. It was salty, but not crumbly as a a hard boiled chicken egg would be. It had almost a creamy velvety texture. I could hardly spot much egg white. It sat on a bed of what I would guess is kale leaves in a flake pastry. Nice. What took me off guard was the Canelle. It looked like chocolate, but did not taste like it. It was hard and brittle, cracking when I bit into it. It had a custardy, like a bread pudding, filling inside. Interesting. What is good to know, they now have weekend hours too. read more
