This is a 21st century version of a mid 20th century bakery. As you walk in, the baked goods are to the left. There is a wonderful selection of breads, loaves, pastries. I really liked the olive bread. The chocolate babka is in the rack on the right hand side. To buy and enjoy this babka is a must. If you look at other reviews, nearly everybody(!) raves about it. And it deserves all the praise it receives. The baked goods are flavorful and not too sweet. In back is a selection of smoked salmon, hummus, labneh and other great selections for breakfast. They all come with several slices of their sourdough bread. There are about 10 tables toward the back and several outside where you can sit and enjoy the creations. The vibe here is friendly. Mmm... I could live in this bakery I think. The decor is sparse but the employees are all welcoming. Upon entering, I was offered a free sample of soft, old world style chocolate cake. Very chocolately without being rich, dense, nor buttery. The kind of softness like a lovely supportive bed, not too airy nor squishy. Exactly what cake should be. I wanted to try everything but bought just one chocolate rugelach. I walked down the street, taking a bite of the crispy exterior. Very chocolately, sweet without being saccharine, and moist without being heavy, each ingredient complimented each other without just devolving into sugary butter. My friend and I stopped here on a Thursday morning around 8 a.m. before work and it was such a great vibe. So many people were there just catching up over a cup of coffee or grabbing breakfast before starting their day. We got iced caramel lattes and a tea, and everything was great. I always come here to pick up a chocolate babka when I am nearby in the city. Today I went to go pick one up and saw that they have a new one, a red bean one! Because of this, I had to get both especially since they had a 2 for $32 and they let me mix and match! The chocolate one is always a staple but the red bean one was soo good too. The red bean flavor is super strong and my only slight complaint is that it is a little too sweet. But this is not a big deal because I feel like it will go so well with tea. Valentine's Day is big business. Special heart shaped pastries and breads are prepared and then priced astronomically. I had come here for the Roselach, marzipan filled rugelach. Priced at $3.50 each it is pricey but so is marzipan. I bought two. The heart shaped hazelnut shortbread cookies looked tempting but at $14.95 a packet I placed them back on the shelf. Large heart shaped baguettes were also lined up on the bread shelf. Many customers were here but they were buying mostly what they usually buy. Gifted these tasty treats in the mail: Received hamentashen: date, poppy, chocolate and black sesame and their famous, "award winning" chocolate babka. New York magazine called it "the best babka in NYC". Delicious hamentaschen cookies! Flew across the country and still tasted freshly baked. Tasty dough with lots of filling. Been here a couple of times and everything is amazing. These are my favorite: #1 chocolate cake which is in the shape of a pound cake #2 Granola Cookies #3 sourdough bread, sliced #4 regular and the chocolate croissant I also tried the chocolate rugala and though it's more moist than the one I've tried from a Costco as well as from a Trader Joe's, I think that type of bakery item is just not my thing. The service is pretty quick and they are very polite behind the counter. Will definitely be back. There's not a lot of places to sit inside, maybe for a small tables and one taller table that each have between two to four chairs each. The espresso is really good as well! read more

I scarfed a couple, day-old, on the flight home yesterday and they were still magnificent! I recently dropped in here for a cup of coffee after brunch. Lord did I have to exhibit some self control to not purchase everything in the bakery. I had never been to Breads before but have heard rave rave reviews. They specialize in babka, rugelach, baguettes, challah, croissants, a wide variety of loaf cakes, and cookies. I need to come back here for a special occasion or the holidays. But we just came for the coffee. Which was totally fine and a-okay. They have a selection of pour your own milks off to the side. They also had a cold section of smoked salmon and deli sandwiches which was interesting. Everything is a bit pricey. Their babka runs at almost $20. Minus the coffee and drink selections were super affordable. But have to definitely check out if their babka is award winning. Stopped by after wandering the Farmer's Market at Union Square. I always grab a loaf of their chocolate babka to take home with me. This time we also tried their chocolate almond croissant which was super flaky and buttery. Half of the filling was almond, chewy and sweet and the other half was a rich dark chocolate. Together, it was heavenly and to top it all off, it was sprinkled with sliced almonds and powdered sugar. Still dreaming of this pastry. We got their famous chocolate babka $17.50, and we split this among four people. I also got their super fruit iced tea (and was generally very impressed by the selection of cold teas that were available)! Note that the seating is very limited on the weekends, so we had to stand while trying the babka. I was visiting the Center for Jewish History in Manhattan and afterwords went with a group of friends to Breads Bakery to pickup some lunch. There are two sections to this bakery: a front section with bakery items and a section in the back with pre-made sandwiches, salads and some drinks. I got a mozzarella sandwich, which I ate on my way back. The bread was the best part - as it should be at a bakery. The mozzarella cheese, basil and tomatoes (one was a bit hard) were all very fresh and went will with a tasty balsamic dressing. A big party I was with ordered at once, but the worker was helpful in making sure he could move us along in a quick fashion. I did not get anything from the bakery, but I passed by a lot of the offerings including baguettes, brioche rolls and challah breads. They even had a loaf of bread on display brandishing the Philadelphia Eagles word mark to prepare for Super Bowl LIX - there are plenty of Eagles fans in NYC! Overall I can see why this place is popular, but I didn't think it stood out from other bakeries I've tried. It's not a place I'd seek out. Strawberry brioche: this one was almost cold when I got it, and it tasted better when I warmed it up a bit. It reminded me of a cheese danish, it was good but nothing special. The almond croissant had a good amount of almond filling, but it just tasted like sugar. I didn't really get much almond flavoring. The croissant itself however was flaky and paired well with the soft filling. So personally, it did not fit my preferences but if you like a lot of almond filling in your croissants then this is for you! Chocolate rugelach was like just a soft chocolate roll, again nothing special. It didn't help that the total was ~$19 for these 3 things (strawberry brioche was the most expensive, and most disappointing) If you just want pastries you can order in the front, otherwise there's a separate line in the back to order from the kitchen. The best bread bakery I've visited. I've been before and they donate bread to homeless shelters in midtown area( details on volunteering below). I visited with a friend to share challah bread and au choc croissants. The au choc was brilliant, I will return for a bigger order as it's petite. The challah bread reminded me of a roll.
