Magia Restaurant & Bar opened recently in the former Calitri's Italian Cuisine building on US 1 South in Danvers, which was one of my favorite go to Italian restaurants in the area.  Magia also serves up Italian cuisine in a redone modern upscale casual space which offers a bar/lounge area (bar seating surrounded by high top tables), dining room (white linen cloths over tables), and function room for parties/receptions. They are open for lunch (Mon-Sat) and dinner (daily).  I stopped by Magia for lunch recently and headed to the bar since I was solo. The bar area was moderately busy with the Saturday afternoon crowd. I was given a Lunch Menu to look over, which offers appetizers, sandwiches, salads, pizzes, and lunch pasta dishes. The prices are moderate, most lunch items $10-$18, dinner menu has more offerings and higher pricing. For lunch I ordered the Sausage Pizze ($12) and Linguine Alla Vongole ($16-lunch size) with the pizze coming out first. The Sausage Pizze (10") had a very firm crunchy crust, slightly charred along edge, topped with sliced Italian Sausage, Broccoli Rabe, Parmesan cheese, Pomodoro sauce, which was a bit messy. The Linguine Alla Vongole came out quickly next, which was supposed to be brought out after I finished the pizze, but this was good since I could dip the pizze crust in the linguine clam broth. The portion was just right with 7 shelled clams over al dente linguine pasta in a white wine garlic clam broth. I was also given additional parmesan cheese to sprinkle or pour onto the pasta dish. I was able to finish both items then got the check which was $29.96 with tax and before tip.  Overall, the lunch I had at the bar was pretty good and the food tasted just fine, what I expected. The service was adequate though the bartender was moderately busy making drinks and serving the customers sitting around the bar. read more

Normally visit on. Friday or Saturday night , food is normally excellent and the ambiance is real nice. Always packed and would highly recommend making a reservation. Went on Sunday night on the way to the airport. Restaurant had very few people in which was sort of expected for a Sunday evening. Only one server who was almost running around to serve everyone although there were a few people to help deliver food and drinks. Food was good as always but considering there was likely 20 or so people in the restaurant which I would guess could cater for 200 or more food took 55 minutes to come and was warm not hot. Restaurant was also very cold. This experience has dampened what were always good experiences in the past. Would likely look for an alternate restaurant next time. read more

UMMM HI. Magia is the real deal. Located right off route one (slow down you may fly by it). Amazing, genuinely nice staff and GREAT food. We have dined for lunch a few times with our almost five month old son and have had the best experiences. Never an issue with being able to leave him in his car seat while sliding him next to us in a booth. The place is HUGE and clean. We love the paninis served with a nice salad and fries, and the table bread served with dipping oil. They offer a nice wine and martini list. There seems to be something on the menu that will suit anyone. Recently saw they are running a dollar oyster special on certain days in the bar and lounge area - for all the oyster fiends (like us). We've been here a few times. Food has always been spot on. They don't mind making alterations (changing pasta types for example). Prices are good, some items pricier but in market we're in its to be expected. drinks are average on price, not over powering. I probably wouldn't have gone back after the first time we went here but some friends asked us to join them. Its only good...right? Seated promptly and got some attention. The long and the short, better than last time but service still slow (especially bar) and not always organized. Trying hard but clearly still overwhelmed. Had an issue with one of the meals which was promptly and generously corrected with a smile. While it's not the most expensive place around, and portions were all good sized, the way some of the meals were dressed and presented was not really up to standard or polished. The most notable example was the tuna app, advertised with an aioli and a sauce. Generally it would be served in a way that you could taste one of the other. Unfortunately both sauces were poured in together in a bowl and were combined by the time they got there. All you could really taste was the soy at that point. Some of the salads were heavy on balsamic glaze and could have used even a little olive oil. And I'm and on. They serve stuff on cute little artsy plates but really it's not that pretty by the time it gets to the table. Drinks were huge tho. The bar and the party down stairs was hopping. I thought everything tasted pretty good. Service was great. They took our orders right away. Brought my drink out pretty quick. But when it came to the food- my husbands pasta was little too salty, and he tasted some shell particles. And while my steak was good, it definitely wasn't the best I've ever had. The Baked Mac Lobster & Cheese was so good I ate it all. Definitely recommend it. And my drink was ok. Overall I would go back. But we'd probably try other options. The other thing that kind of bothered us, we were still eating and they were already trying to box up our meals. Was little weird considering they were not even busy & tables were empty. Stopped by for appetizers and a drink and opted for seating in the bar/lounge. Drink service was prompt Martini construction perfect and upon consideration we asked the server/bartender if we might split dishes. We were offerred the choice of sharing a single platter or as we chose, to split with separate plates. We split dinner orders of Caesar salad and Bolognese with Pappardele. The Caesar was crisp and properly dressed and one of the plates came with requested anchovie. The generous portions of Bolognese arrived hot and had a rich and meaty ragu flavor well proportioned to the al dente house made Pappardele. The experience for the evening was furthur enhanced by a talented musician entertaining the lounge crowd with a personal touch on classic rock/blues songs. Margia is the whole package. Had dinner last night with a friend. No drinks; just one bottle of still water. My first (and last) time here. I was excited when I saw Mozzarella en Carozza on the menu; I haven't had a great one since Stephanie's in East Boston closed, years ago. Rino's serves a good one but it's not on the regular menu so it's only by chance when I happen to be there when it's on special that I get to have it. I was so looking forward to it! It turned out to be a sandwich size mozzarella cheese stick, that's it. A thick slice of cheese breaded. That's it. Probably comes frozen like those you get in any sports bar. The sauce was good, but it was not even close to Mozzarella en Carozza (https://www.recipesfromitaly.com/mozzarella-in-carrozza/). I also ordered the beet and arugula salad with oranges; less than mediocre. There were enough beets, but not even a cup full of argula and I only tasted orange at the last bite. Much better beet salad at Red's, down the road. And three times the size! Entree: Haddock Francese. I think the fish was previously frozen. I could be wrong but the texture was not that of fresh fish. It was tough! When have you ever described a piece of fish as tough????? Strange. Tastless, too. Fresh haddock that has been dipped in an egg batter does not have the texture of that served at Magia, and I have had a lot of haddock Francese both at home and in restaurants. The sauce that came with the dish was very good. I enjoyed the shiitake mushrooms especially. The mashed potatoes that accompanied the fish were the best I have ever had in a restaurant. Delicious. I ordered gelato for dessert; nothing to write home about but good. The decaf cappuccino was delicious. My friend had a Ceasar salad too heavily laden with dressing; she left half of it. Her Fra Diablo was too spicy for her; she had asked for mild. Other than that, she was okay with the dish. She liked the creme brulee and cappuccino. The bill came to $177. and change!!!! I was shocked that my share (with tip) was $90 for no more than a mediocre meal. I will never go back. There are a too many other very good Italian restaurants in the area; pick another one...... read more

The menu on the website does not have prices. I can not imagine the reason for this. I will not go to this restaurant until they post the prices. It is seems like an attempt to trick people or some distorted sense of "classy." i was not sure how to rate the restaurant because i have not eaten there, so I gave them a neutral score. read more

Parking lot was quite empty when we arrived... it's was around 1245PM ... saw the place on one of the food shows ... the restaurant is quite large ... inviting ... sat in bar ... addressed as soon as we sat down ... ordered ice tea & Tonic water ... asked if we wanted bread & oil.... Bread tasted burnt ... not that great & the was far too much oil in the dish ... ordered a Caprese salad to share & we both ordered the chicken parm! Salad was delish! Chicken parm was yummy ... bright red sauce ... pounded quit thin. Breading was great. My husbands parm was a bit too hard on some edges to eat. Pasta was fresh! Overall, a nice lunch ... $75.00 for the meal not including tip! We tried it ... not sure we would go back. read more

We had a reservation for 3 for Thanksgiving @ Mangia, in Danvers. Unfortunately, our mom was sick and wasn't able to make it. The sat us in a very small table that looked like it couldn't accommodate anything more than 2 dinner plates. I asked if we could get the table we had originally made the reservation for . . . they said no. I looked around and most of the restaurant was empty. They then sat us in the corner in another room, about 2 feet away from a group of 10 or more folks who were very loud. Our view was 2 walls and the noisy party next to us; we couldn't see the rest of the restaurant or a window n felt closter phobic in the corner. Still, the majority of the restaurant was empty. I then asked if me n my hubby could be seated in the bar to which they said yes. We sat at a high-top which wasn't very comfortable. The turkey dinner . . . not good . . . the turkey wasn't hand carved, we got chunks of meat on our plates; we each got an ice-cream scoop of mashed pot and a scoop of stuffing. Cranberry and apple pie was included. We had to move the candle and the 2 glasses of water off the high-top to accommodate our plates, our drinks, and bread. I ordered a Cosmo and my husband had soda water . . . all of this for about $100. We've had their Prime-Rib Sunday special which was great. Yes, I know this is an Italian Restaurant . . . my mistake was assuming they would have served a quality Thanksgiving dinner (considering how expensive the restaurant is). We were very disappointed. Started coming here because of the dollar oysters on the recommendation of a good friend. Food is excellent, staff is very nice. I have been here many times by myself and with a friend. I returned today with a friend and sat at the bar for lunch. We ordered dollar oysters (30), a Cobb salad, steak tartar, a side of fries along with another dinner to go. The fries were not hot and a bit limp, we sent them back and it appeared like they took our fries and tossed them in the fryer to crisp them up, they were much better. My lunch size Cobb salad came out looking like a small garden salad with two pieces of bacon and a side of shrimp which I ordered after I gave my menu back to the bartender and she asked if I wanted any protein on my salad. I went for the shrimp not knowing the cost. I believe there were 5 shrimp, possibly 6. They were not a great size at all. After receiving my salad I questioned the bartender what made this garden salad a Cobb salad? (The kitchen had forgotten to put the egg and avocado on top of the salad.) The size of the salad mind you was not a large bowl at all. It was like getting a side garden salad. $12. When the bill came, the salad was listed as $26. So the shrimp cost was $14 for five or six medium shrimp. Had I known the cost of the shrimp I would not have ordered that protein, forget that they weren't even a decent size. My friend agreed that it was a rip to serve that size of shrimp at that cost. I paid the bill (after complaining to the bartender) and when I was leaving, I spoke to the woman at the podium at the entrance of the restaurant. The entire reason I'm writing this review is because of her reaction. It was like she couldn't have cared less. She told me that if I had come up to her before I paid the bill she could have done something. Kind of like an oh well attitude. I'm wondering now if she was management as she said she was. I was disappointed in my meal. The ambiance was nice, the bar area very nice as well. Staff nice as well. I can only rate what my table had. I ordered Fruti Dimare. Too much of the pasta, One half of a lobster tail, 6 very tiny calamari, 2 shrimp, 6 mussels 3 were empty, 2 little necks, one empty. I don't mind paying a little more for a meal if it had been presented without empty shells and regular size calamari.. Mine had the red sauce. My friend had the white sauce, she said no flavor to it. My other friend got pasta fragioli, he said it tasted like canned soup. We all ordered cappuccino and espresso. Even more of a disappointment, no taste of the coffee. We left dissatisfied. If they are skimping this is not good. We don't mind paying a bit more for our food but please give us what it is worth. I know it just opened but I won't be going back. I HAD TO CALL TO THE POLICE ON THIS PLACE! I have never had such experience in my life. This is actually the second time I come here and get treated very poorly. The first time I went with my entire family for Mother's Day. My mom who is very elderly required for her meat to be cooked more thoroughly. The server was unhappy about my mom's request and completely changed her energy towards my family. This caused my family to be very uncomfortable. So to make things better. I went and personaly asked the manager if we could have a change of server because it was very hostile and uncomfortable being serviced by our current one. The manager made the change possible but gave us horrible looks for it. Again the manager herself is very unprofessional and intolerable. This time, I decided to give it a second chance. I went in there with open arms and a forgiving heart. I was there with my 4 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER!! I got serviced by the same exact server who gave us a problem when we came with our family for mother's day. But I thought, to give her a fresh start and treated her with complete kindness and put the past behind us. So I thought. I asked for chili flakes for my pasta and the server never came back with it. 15 minutes passes by and still no flakes!! I had to ask the front for the chili flakes as there were no servers in sight!! I also asked kindly if they would please reheat my pasta as it's been sitting for quite some time as I waited for the flakes. No biggie. The front host asks the server, in front of me, if she can get the flakes I requested (as she comes back EMPTY HANDED) and heat up my food. She takes my food, doesn't warm it up, walks around to another table, grabs the chili flakes, completly disregards my request of heating up my food and then slaps it on my table!!! I then requested for her to warm up my plate again and she argued that "it hasn't even been that long." She began to bicker with me back and forth in front of my 4 year old over not wanting to warm up my food! I called for the manager to resolve the issue and get this absurd server away from me. But the manager escalates this and makes things much worst! She backs up watever the server says and doesn't take anything I say into consideration. Then the server proceeds to say things under her breath which turns into flat out yelling and insulting me!!! The manager then proceeds to do the same and also puts her hands on my daughter's head!!! At this point I call the POLICE on these people. I asked them if it would be a crime if I were to simply get up and not pay anything at all at this restaurant for how my daughter & I are being treated. The Police informed me that, No, it would not be a crime. I was heading out the door I told the manager I called the Police & informed them of my treatment and will not be paying. She then proceeds to touch and get in front of me and my daughter at the door. I get out and 5 different women CHARGE after me! Calling me names, hazing and tailgating my car!! They also started recording us as if I was trying to run away when I told them exactly why I was not paying & that the Police themselves gave me the consent. It was truly Mortifying!!! The police got in Contact with me & told me I did the right thing by getting out of there before things escalated further and calling them & that I did not commit a crime! And that they would also be educating the establishment about the laws. Especially for how they treated me as a customer with her 4 year old!! That's just the service, there's always something wrong with the food as well!! Please save yourself the time and do not give this restaurant a visit ever!! Years ago (maybe 50 or so) there was a restaurant by the name of Calitri's on the spot where Magia now stands. We went there for lunch today and had a wonderful meal and great service. The fried calamari and spicy peppers were a great start. Those were followed by eggplant parmigiana with penne in a tasteful tomato sauce and a Shrimp Scampi pizza. There was also a serving of artisan bread and spicy dipping oil. The waitress was personable and very helpful and knowledgeable. We will return, no doubt about that. BTW The dinner menu looks like a feast worth enjoying, Large and spacious Lounge in addition ti the dining area. read more

I came here a couple of weeks ago for my mom's birthday. Our server was super attentive and sweet but the food was subpar. I'd give our server and ambience 5 stars and the food 2 if I could. The seafood tower looked great but only the oysters were fresh; the lobster and crab tasted defrosted and frozen a few times. The dinner portions were generous yet disappointing. The best entrees weren't seafood, which were the chicken marsala and the chicken risotto. We also ordered the frutti di mare. Again, the seafood tasted old. The lobster tail was sour. The sea bass special was...just weird. The fish was cooked perfectly but the tomato sauce on it was thick and jammy. It was such a strange combo that it ruined the entire dish. The best thing I tried was the molten lava cake for dessert that was spot on. Maybe they had an off night with the seafood, but it's enough to deter me from coming back. read more

Magia is a sharp looking Italian steakhouse with some unique cocktails. The food was overall quite good and the service was outstanding. So why the low review? I bring this up in hopes the business owner sees and addresses it... the moment me and my party walked in, the place smelled like a basement that was flooded months ago, and left behind a murky, moldy smell. It was quite offensive to start. Even though we all enjoyed the food and even commented we had one of the best waitresses we ever had - when we left we all agreed we wouldn't go back simply due to the smell. Magia - please address this for the sake of your own business. This review likely would have been five stars, but it was really that bad. Almost like stinky sneakers. Stopped in for a late lunch. Appreciated they are open all afternoon. There was no host so we sat ourselves at the bar. The bartender was super nice and attentive. Very professional. We split a Caesar salad which was excellent. Also tried the eggplant parm which was good. The pasta was too "al dente" and some was even stuck together, indicating a rush or maybe too much in the pot at once? Overall a very good experience. Good bread. Top notch italian, such a great addition to Danvers. Great location, right on old route one. Always very clean and well maintained. We frequent this resturant and have never had a bad experience. I'm not sure what is going on here, but the drama amongst the staff was hilarious to watch. My wife and I flew up for a family function. The mgr, or at least the guy in the suit, was so mad at the staff; turning bright red, chasing staff, yelling at staff (trying to be discreet). Our table was cracking up just watching the drama unfold, however, it made for a very uncomfortable event. The food was ok, the function room was very cold - no ambiance whatsoever. It felt like eating in a middle school cafeteria. The staff, of course, because of the manager, were acting like robots....dropping off food, drinks - absolutely no personality at all. We actually felt uncomfortable having to have them serve us. We could not get out of there fast enough to continue our family function down the street at a more happy, lively establishment. We did walk around the upstairs to check out the dining room and we all laughed when it was empty. Of course it was empty, there is no reason to be there. We left - never to return. The whole family was thankful there was no room fee. The only thing worth viewing at this place is the drama amongst the staff - something like I have never seen before.......and scary! read more

I came here for the first time recently but, unfortunately, I didn't think the food was very good at all. I was surprised they don't offer you fresh grated cheese, they gave me a little bowl of already grated cheese which was completely flavorless, like a bowl of sawdust. I ordered the bolognese and it didn't have any of the slow cooked richness you'd expect in a high quality bolognese. It tasted like browned up hamburger in a very plain and unseasoned tomato sauce. I went at the height of lunchtime and the restaurant was completely empty. The food was just plain very poor. I also tried the chicken piccata. I got extremely thick pieces of chicken that were not pan fried but looked steamed. The sauce was wildly unbalanced. If the food was good, I would be a regular customer but, after being very disappointed with these two dishes, it's just not worth going back.4 read more

We have been looking forward to our first visit to Magia...as recommended by friends, and I have to say we were somewhat disappointed. The food without question was excellent...stuffed calamari, lobster ravioli, seafood risotto, chix picatta and shrimp fra diavolo Our waitress, lovely and sweet, seemed overwhelmed by the Saturday night crowd...it took three go-arounds to get four menus that were complete. Water service was inconsistent at best. Several dishes were delivered to our table that we had not ordered. Plates and glass ware not attended to as would be expected in a restaurant of this promoted caliber. But more noticeable was how dirty and uncared for are the outside windows and the overhead bulbs in a central chandelier. No excuses not to look up and attend to maintenance. We do wish them well and probably plan to return...but may give it a while to settle in. read more

Magia. Translated from Italian to English means "Magic." Which is exactly what this place does! They make MAGIC. Magia was phenomenal for my first time here. Reading some of this comments it seems like some people may have north end taste, with Route 1 money. One girl actually said it smelled like dirty shoes, and I believe that may have been her own smell. I digress. Let's get down to the review. The ambience is phenomenal. I went with my girlfriend the day before Easter and we didn't know what we were getting into. We were dressed like bums but wanted Italian food as we were already out and in the area. The Magia staff welcomed us in with open arms and I feel they would have if we went in with ripped clothes too. There was a small wait for the dining room and the hostess informed us the bar was open seating, if we want a high top we could take it and she would be over with a menu. We found a high top and before I put my left cheek in the chair, she magically appears with menus. The waitress was top tier. Were we on Route 1, or were we in Italy!? Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. She treated us like we were gold, from start to finish. She refused to let our water or drinks run dry. Mind you, the water tasted like it was from a triple osmosis tap and blessed by the pope. The drinks? A sober person would beat sobriety just to smell them. The bar area alone was like being in paradise. There were outlets and hooks under each spot, because they know you don't want to leave. Veronica may be calling you to come home, but you have to finish that Celtics game and stuff some gnocchis down while charging your phone. I got the Veal saltimbocca. God himself couldn't make a better one. The veal on the plate was bigger than the plate on the plate. The sauce? HEAVENLY. There was a ton of prosciutto. I bleed prosciutto and cry mushrooms. This plate had more than i could ever ask for. Calamari for an appetizer was as fresh as can be. Was it small? Sure. But who wants a giant squid for an app? It was unreal. The seats were like sitting in a La-Z-boy in the comfort of your home during a blizzard. The fire place is on and Veronica just brought you down some fresh shrimp cocktail while you're watching the Patriots hammer the Jets in MetLife stadium. At one point, a gentleman asked to switch the channel to a basketball game. Another man turned around and the two started talking. Magia worked its magic and brought two people together to be friends in a random place. Lastly, the owner went around to say hi to everyone. Did he make it to me? Nope. Why? Well I was in a sweatshirt in the corner and my girlfriend had just gone to the bathroom. He knew I was being awkward and avoiding eye contact. Did he try to make me fell more awkward? Came from out of state and wanted Italian food. Waited forever for cold bread to finally be delivered to the table. My daughters 'mac and cheese' was more like an Alfredo with the white sauce thickened and clumpy to the noodles because it came out cold on a cold plate that we were told was hot by the runner. My husband sat with an empty drink throughout our appetizers and main course as our server disappeared and was never seen again. My chicken was tough to the point I couldn't cut through it. Finally about 25 minutes after getting our appetizers and main dishes the food runner asked if it was okay, I told him it was tough and told him he could take it. He asked to make it again and I just asked if he could take it off the bill. We had a 1 year old with us who was already done being there.. had the waiter checked on us when the food got brought out I may have had them remake it, but I couldn't wait another half hour food my food again. We got the initial bill of $97 which included the meal we didn't eat after the manager said she also tried to cut into it and it was tough, my husband dropped $100 bill in the tab and left. I asked the manager for a copy of the receipt and she handed me a receipt for $60. I asked why the initial bill the waitress gave us was for $97 and she explained that the chicken parm hadn't been taken off and the waitress gave us the original bill. The manager went and grabbed the tab off the table and the original $97 receipt was mysteriously gone and all that was left was the $60 bill, meaning we left a $40+ tip for the waitress that did nothing but gave us drinks. Very good food. Very nice waitress. Very bad table. Went Christmas Eve-with reservations- and was sat in an almosy empty dining room at the end of a party of 6. At a table so small we didn't have a light because it wouldn't fit. Not nice. More tables sat empty the entire time we were there. Sorry if that's the way you take care of folks but it was not a great experience. Enjoy that empty dining room. read more
