The owner wants to do all the work so he doesn't have to pay out for waiters and waitresses so you end up waiting a really long time to get your food or a refill on your drinks or cocktails would not recommend this to anyone, especially for what they charge for the food they serve. read more

Also this restaurant needs a major insecticide tiny flying bugs possibly coming from the wall and flooring or plumbing. I was really irritated killing bugs while eating. My family and I have been coming here for a few years now. It's a special occasion type of visit, but it's always been great. Thomas is just plain fun. As you dine there a few times, he gets to know you and is a general great guy. Food: the aged steaks are great. Order them a level below what you normally want...(i.e., medium rare vs medium) The ageing process and/or the cooking style tend to increase the doneness relative to normal. Magellans is an awesome restaurant for many reasons. The porter house is delicious -that garlic butter is magic. The pasta is equally as good, the rigatoni bolognese was the right amount of cream and spice. The dessert, the brownie with the walnuts and the ice cream on top, was delicious. That being said the service is slow but it's a family run restaurant where you get to meet Magellan himself. If you want a quick meal I don't recommend this place. If you want an experience, this is the place for you. He was also very accommodating of our conversation 10 month old baby and didn't flinch with the mess she made. I'm a big fan of Magellan's. I've been coming here since they opened. I'd say without a doubt that this is the nicest restaurant in Tracy. One thing that makes this place special in my opinion is the owner. Thomas is very hands on and takes a lot of pride in his establishment. To his credit, many restating this town have come and gone yet he manages to remain and it is largely due to quality and his attention to detail. While the menu has changed slightly, with the addition of the Ahi tuna, and some other new choices, it remains consistent, which is great. My girlfriend and I shared the Ahi appetizer which was really fresh and delicious. The bread they serve is always fresh and warm too. I ordered the New York steak, which is always cooked to perfection. My gf ordered the grilled scallops and they were awesome. The sauce was great. They offer a full bar as well as a nice wine selection. If you want fine dining in Tracy, this is the place. It's small and quaint with a nice atmosphere. It's casual enough but also nice enough to dress to impress. Go see Thomas and you won't be disappointed. read more

I had been curious about this place for some time. I looked at the reviews on Yelp and they seemed to be pretty split. People seemed to either love it or hate it. I was also surprised that with almost 50 reviews, there are no user pics of the food or the inside of the restaurant. So I went in with an open mind. After my experience I would say this place really falls right in between at 3 stars. My husband and I came here for dinner on 2/13/13. The ambiance in this place is intimate -- with a lowly lit, quaint, dining room. The walls are decorated with a calm ocean theme with sailboats painted in the distance, very cute. I posted a photo of the decor in the user photos. The menu had a good amount of options, but half the menu was seafood options. There were also several spelling errors on the menu that I think should be fixed - just looks unprofessional. Our server was very friendly & checked on us frequently to make sure all was good. The only thing that bothered me about him is that had his blu-tooth on the whole time and I am not sure why. I know that's not a big deal, just a pet peeve of mine. Just doesn't really look good on someone who is supposed to be focusing on their customers. We started off with the crab cakes ($10.95) which were great. They were well seasoned, topped with a tartar sauce and had a spicy sauce on the plate that added a kick. This was our first time having crab cakes and we really liked them. We were also served complimentary bread and butter. The bread was good but the butter was still cool from the refrigerator and didn't spread at all. We ordered our entree's, I got the Atlantic Salmon ($25.95) and my husband ordered the Prawns Fettuccine ($23.95). I posted photos of these plates as well. It took almost an hour to get our food. Our server came back after about 45 minutes saying they are running behind and came back about 10 minutes after that with our food. We were pretty hungry at that point, but were let down by the food. The flavor was really lacking from both of our dishes. My husbands fettuccine had a very mild flavor. There was almost no spice/flavor in the Alfredo sauce and it was really plain. We were asked if we were interested in dessert but kindly declined since we were turned off by our entrees. For the price we paid for our dishes, they were disappointing. In the reviews I read before coming, people referred to this place as 'fine dining' in Tracy. While I will agree that this place has some elements of an upscale restaurant (ambiance, menu flexibility, price) I don't really feel that the food quite measures up to that title. I do agree that this place is the closest you will get to fine dining in this city, but it's not quite there yet. Overall, the experience was good and the food was okay. However, I don't plan on coming back because $25 for a plate of food that is just okay doesn't make sense to me. A couple of my friends and I had a get-together dinner yesterday, and we decided on this place since Tracy is about half-way for all the us. I had high expectations after having read Yelp reviews, so I was very much looking forward to this place. When we first arrived, we were informed by the owner that their kitchen exhaust had broken down and they may not be able to open (or won't be able to seat anyone inside) - but luckily, they had outdoor seating & they also had a separate business-dining area that was air-conditioned...and that's where we ended up having our dinner in the terrible heat of Tracy (loved the AC!). The service was great - they consistently checked up on us throughout the whole meal from the point we sat down until we left. They started us off with some lukewarm bread + cold butter - not the most ideal combination (and if you read my reviews, I'm VERY picky about my bread & butter/dressing), but the butter eventually melted on my bread, so it's acceptable at least. Here's what we ordered: - caprese: since our guy friend didn't like seafood at all, we ended up getting the only non-seafood appetizer to start. It was a very refreshing dish and started off our meal very well. It was also a good serving size for 3. - linguini pescatore: this was my entree and I was very disappointed...the pasta had a complete lack of flavor and texture, and while they had a lot of seafood on the plate, I wasn't all that impressed with how they tasted. The mussel shells broke so I had to be really careful and pick out all the pieces in my pasta so I wouldn't hurt my mouth when I chewed. - my other friends ordered the fettuccini & the mustard chicken: they both liked their dishes very much...maybe I'm just picky about mine!! - cheesecake & tiramisu: my friend and I shared these 2 desserts since we both wanted to try both items, ha ha! The tiramisu has a very different consistency/texture from the usual tiramisu but it was still pretty good. The cheesecake was also very delicious but came with A LOT of strawberry jam that was overly-sweet...while I love sweet things, I actually had to make sure my cheesecake came in minimal contact with the jam before I ate it...that's how sweet the jam was! For the amount of money I had to shell out for this meal in Tracy (!!), I expected a lot more out of my food...which is why this place is just average overall! read more

Tonight, I went to go eat there and when I went inside no one greeted us and we were standing there for about 5 minutes. Then a waiter came up to us and just said "we're full" and then he left. There was no "Do you have a reservation?!" Or "would you like to wait for a table?!" NOTHING!! I have never been treated so shabby in my life. I will not be going back to that damp and dingy hole in the wall wanna be fancy restaurant again in my life. I have a good mind to call the manager and let him know about my horrible experience!! Came here for an early dinner after work .. the entrance is to the right of the white gated patio. The owner greeted us and for a while we were the only customer (we came as it opened) it was nice and felt like we had the place to ourselves :) the owner waited on us and was very personable. We split a ceasar salad as an appetizer, but after the first few bites wished we ordered 2 full orders! Homemade croutons, fresh dressing and worth a whole plate. I ordered the duck and my bf ordered the rib eye. Duck was ordered medium and did not taste gamey. Very tender. Rib eye was full of flavor and not too fatty. The side of potatoes were crispy and some of the best ive had. We had to order the dessert and got bread pudim and apple pie a la mode Worth the price especially in Tracy! read more

We were greeted by the owner, who is Portuguese, and he entertained us throughout the night. He is funny and friendly and full of advice but is careful not to pick out any favorites. We ordered a few appetizers- smoked salmon and caprese- both of which were pretty good. For my entree, I had a fish off the menu, but I felt it wasn't seasoned very well and I found it a bit disappointing. However, I will say that everyone else at our table were very happy with what they ordered so it seems like I just didn't make the best choice. The restaurant itself is a bit older- almost has that musky smell- and it's a bit dark but for a cooler night in the winter it makes for a great dining option. From what I understand, good restaurants are hard to come by in Tracy and this one is a good option for a nicer dinner with a wide array of selection. read more

Deceiving menu !....you just cannot name your dishes after well known italian dishes just because you want to be chic. Calamari...fished from the... Sea of Goodyear...chewy and way to overcooked. Spaghetti alla Carbonara....all they have of spaghetti alla carbonara is...the spaghetti....the rest is a glorified Alfredo sauce (at double the price of other places) with no ingredients used to make a real carbonara. Wow! What a find! We chose Magellan's since it was exactly what we were looking for: close to home, indoor dining and an interesting menu. The dining room was comfortable with a good vibe. The food was absolutely delicious. He had the Porterhouse and I had the Alaskan Halibut; both were cooked to perfection. Service was just right; not ignoring nor hovering. First nice restaurant to open during COVID. We went here for our anniversary and enjoyed the place. Ambience was average, but won't judge because the restrictions were new so they had only just opened after moving tables around for 6 foot distancing and everything was new. The drinks were fine; no draft IPAs is a downer. My wife got seafood pasta and it was pretty good. Not the best she has had but solid. I got the T none. Massive! Lots of meat, not a super flavorful cut but enjoyed the meal and had leftovers. I don't know: we would recommend it but it's not on our list for a return in the near future. read more

The food alone would have been a 5 star but when you wait way too long for it and it arrives cold it looses something to say the least. The owner was our server. He was very accommodating and spent a lot of time moving around the restaurant visiting with the customers which is great until he asks how your dinner was. We very politely told him that the food was great but it was not hot. He blamed that on us for liking our food hotter than most. We then told him that it was not only not hot, it was barely luke warm. We had waited so long for it that we did not complain when it was finally brought out. He became quite rude. We will not go back because of him, not the food or other staff. We have friends who had an encounter with him also but chose to go anyway. Now none of us will return. read more

Been to Magellan's several times in the 17 years we've lived in Tracy. The food has always been good as well as the service. This visit was a bit different and very disappointing. We were looking forward to having a nice dinner before going to a concert at the Grand Theatre. For a restaurant that claims to be top notch having to ask for bread and butter was a little off. The portions were a joke for what the meal cost. First words out of my wife's mouth was "is this it". Waiter came by to ask how out dinner was and I said tasty but very disappointing. Have ate at Magellan's numerous times over the years. This is Tracy's best fine dining experience in Tracy. Although this is not Gary Danko or a Michael Mina dining experience, it is a good experience. Wait staff is always 1st rate. Good consistancy with the food. I habitually have the rib eye. Always cooked to the medium rare temp. that I request. Appetizers: Calamari, crab cakes, and Ahi Tuna are all good but nothing to get excited about. If you are looking for a fine dining experience, go to SF. But if you don't want to go to SF, go to Magellan's. read more

WOW we had our annual recognition lunch here today and Thomas opened the restaurant just for our team. We have been here several times over the years but today was extra special. We had a group of 19 people and everyone raved about all of the food. We started with some calamari that was fried perfectly. We also had a Tomato and Mozzarella apps. The Caesar salad was very tasty. The bread was hot and both soft and crunchy. I could have made a meal with that and the butter but I held back. The Steaks were perfect, the Salmon was the best many said they have ever had and the Bolognese was also great. Just when you think it can not get better the desert menu arrives and all choices look decadent. When they arrived they were sexier than they were described on the menu. They are so large and totally worth the price he charges for them. I would say anyone of them would be big enough to split. We wanted a nice place for dinner on our anniversary yesterday. I made reservations and we were seated quickly. We received water and told no menus, you need to look it up on our phone. There was only one other table of six in the restaurant. We waited 30 minutes, we even put our phones down hoping someone would come. The owner was in the lobby just reading something on his phone. Terrible serice and after 30 minutes we decided to leave. The owner looking at his phone while we left didn't even say a thing, they lost a customer forever!
