Have ate at Magellan's numerous times over the years. This is Tracy's best fine dining experience in Tracy. Although this is not Gary Danko or a Michael Mina dining experience, it is a good experience. Wait staff is always 1st rate. Good consistancy with the food. I habitually have the rib eye. Always cooked to the medium rare temp. that I request. Appetizers: Calamari, crab cakes, and Ahi Tuna are all good but nothing to get excited about. If you are looking for a fine dining experience, go to SF. But if you don't want to go to SF, go to Magellan's. read more

WOW we had our annual recognition lunch here today and Thomas opened the restaurant just for our team. We have been here several times over the years but today was extra special. We had a group of 19 people and everyone raved about all of the food. We started with some calamari that was fried perfectly. We also had a Tomato and Mozzarella apps. The Caesar salad was very tasty. The bread was hot and both soft and crunchy. I could have made a meal with that and the butter but I held back. The Steaks were perfect, the Salmon was the best many said they have ever had and the Bolognese was also great. Just when you think it can not get better the desert menu arrives and all choices look decadent. When they arrived they were sexier than they were described on the menu. They are so large and totally worth the price he charges for them. I would say anyone of them would be big enough to split. Thomas is a great host and made serving all of us at the same time look easy. read more

My boyfriend & I hit this place up on a whim for something new/different in Tracy. What an impressive surprise this little nook was & a hidden gem! By far one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to. First off the restaurant is tiny and we came with three and a baby and they put us at a two person table. Inside was extremely cold with the ac blowing nonstop the whole time. We asked many times if we could be moved to a larger table or outside but even though tables kept opening up they never once offered and gave multiple 4 person tables to parties of two. Our waiter recommended several dishes so we ordered three appetizers, calamari scallops and crab cakes. Each one was very bland and not impressive at all. Then I specifically asked the waiter if they covered their stakes in a sauce and he said no way that's crazy when people do that. So we ordered filet minion and yep covered in a post roast sauce. Asked the waiter and he said "oh no that's only the T-bone we don't cover in sauce then looked at me like I was stupid fir asking. The pasta is bland and basically boxed food. Overall horrible food!!! The owner- wow what a special kind of grumpy full of himself guy. Talks to a few tables he feels are important and won't even look at the rest. Our baby was nearly perfect the whole time, even though we had to wait over an our for a side of steamed broccoli so she got fussy one time for a total of 5 seconds and the owner walks by our table and makes a comment to another table about our baby making a tiny fuss. At this point I am so over this place. So we ask for the fifth time "can we please get a bigger table or any one table outside that is open"? They reluctantly let us move to one of the many open tables outside. Then the owner comes out and makes it a point to not look at us, pulls out a wad of cash and starts counting in front of the costumers. Can you get anymore unprofessional. Our first outing since the pandemic and it was very pleasant. Family business that does not cut corners on quality!

Dined there last night which happened to be a concert night. This was a special occasion and we had made reservation several days in advance. As a table of 5, we were seated right next to a door that goes out to their patio dining. During the entire evening servers were going in and out of the door and leaving it open, especially the owner. It was warm and also very loud out side which made it hard for us to converse. The owner was very rude and arrogant from the time we sat down. We had to ask to order and for bread. The staff was inexperienced for a restaurant of that caliper. I will not go back and probably any one in our party. Sadly, the food was delicious. read more

We wanted a nice place for dinner on our anniversary yesterday. I made reservations and we were seated quickly. We received water and told no menus, you need to look it up on our phone. There was only one other table of six in the restaurant. We waited 30 minutes, we even put our phones down hoping someone would come. The owner was in the lobby just reading something on his phone. Terrible serice and after 30 minutes we decided to leave. The owner looking at his phone while we left didn't even say a thing, they lost a customer forever! This place has been in the same location for many years. We do not actually like it that much, but since we were meeting friends there, we decided to keep our opinions to ourselves. At more than $30 a plate, (without appetizer, salad, soup, or bread) it is quite pricey. An average meal with wine can easily be over $100 for two people. The ribeye was just average and was overcooked. The salmon was dry and flavorless. There are very few choices for fine dining in Tracy. We will not be returning. read more

We just moved out to Tracy and learning about the food scene. We found Magellan's and had lunch a week ago, enjoyed it so much we needed to try the dinner menu. It didn't disappoint. I find this more European style dining where you never feel rushed and your just enjoying a meal in an old friends home. Meal was amazing, service was highly personable, and the evening was exactly what I expected. I know there's other places in Tracy that are doing food right, I'm excited about exploring all of them, for now Magellan's is in my once a month if not more frequent places to visit. read more

A friend and I tried this place out the other night I was looking for a good place since I recently moved to Tracy and am still getting acclimated and what a surprise!! I had the scallop appetizer and the porterhouse medium done to perfection I might add my friend had an appetizer as well(can't remember what ) but it was almost as good as my scallops and the New York also perfect ambiance was nice sir super crowded (it was a week night) cocktails were superb all for about $150.00 so super good AND affordable with a $20 tip for excellent service and I was a happy camper Magellans you have a new customer for life thanks again!! read more

Spotted this place while looking for restaurants along our route. It was such a great choice! I had the NY steak and my hubby the rack of lamb- both were cooked and seasoned perfectly. My husband and I just went there for the first time last night. Being from Europe I LOVED the way the waiter attended to us. I am not used to all the overly nice, always checking in while eating, drinking, chatting type of waiters. Yes, it took some time till we got everything, but I loved just sitting and talking without feeling rushed through a dinner. The Wine/beer choices were okay for the fancy food they served. The food was AMAZING! I love that they have a little bit of everything there, and especially that they have duck on the menu. Almost never find that anywhere. One star is lost because I thought the food was overpriced for the area. we had pasta dishes and both were 22$, which in my opinion is too much. Steak prices seem fair, so does the seafood/duck price. We both liked it, and we'll definitely go back! read more

Love Magellan's! Thomas is great and runs a really nice place. We've been coming here for over 10 years and it never fails us. Menu is always the same, which we enjoy because we have our favorites and NEED our crab cakes, scallops and RibEye! This is a small town, if you want cheap prices and loads of mediocre food, go over the hill! The food is always consistent, really great wine list and his fresh made tiramisu is always delish! This the first time in a LONG time that I've felt insulted by a restaurant. Here's what went down last night. We were looking for a nice dinner for two, and decided on Magellan's because we'd heard it was nice and cozy, if not a bit overpriced. We decided to try it anyway. We walked in, and waited by a vacant check-in desk for what seemed like 5-10 minutes. This while what seemed to be their only waitress, walked by several times within a few steps of us -- without so much as acknowledging our presence. We felt stupid, and unwanted. I finally managed to flag down what seemed like a bus boy, who came over and said... "we'll be with you in a few moments." to which I responded, "it's already been a few moments..." he apologized and prepared a table... in the back, next to the kitchen. (really?). We seated ourselves (still no waitress), and proceeded to wait... and wait... and wait... all while the same waitress never acknowledged our presence, apologized, or anything. She walked past us at least more 3 times. On the fourth time, we left. We will NEVER go back to Magellan's, and honestly I hope they shut down soon and are replaced with an establishment that actually knows how to treat its customers. A simple "sorry for the wait, I'll be right with you. Here's some bread." would have diffused this whole thing, and made for a much more pleasurable evening. But as it stands, avoid this place unless you have a penchant for culinary masochism. read more

This is a hard one to review. Please understand that when reviewing a restaurant customer service and food good hand and hand with the whole dining experience. My fiance and I arrived toward the end of the evening. Just the day before we got engaged and wanted to celebrate with a nice dinner. We are not from Tracy or anywhere in the area but were in town for several weeks on business. The atmosphere is lovely. Very romantic with dim lighting. My fiance ordered the Carbonara . I had the Lamb Shank (I am quite fond of lamb and order it quite frequently. ) The service was good throughout. When our food was brought out, the Carbonara, was simply excellent. The pancetta was nice, thick salty goodness. My lamb, however was another story. I cut off two bites and notice the meat was cold. As I cut a third bite, I notice that that bite was extremely cold and not eatable. I didn't want to be disappointed, not tonight!! I cut down to the bone to find out what the problem was and the bone was FROZEN!! When I say frozen I mean if I kept my finger on it any longer my finger would start to hurt. (Note* Food Should NEVER hurt, unless its Whiskey) We called the waiter over who was very psychically upset. He apologized over and over again and mentioned how he warned the cook earlier to warm everything longer. He asked several times if he could "fix" it and was very sympathetic. At the end of the night he didn't charge us for the horrible lamb and gave us a slice of Pumpkin Cheese Cake right in time for the Fall season. The cake was amazing! All in all, this restaurant will get our business again. The food was excellent (less the lamb of course) The service was great! read more

I wanted so much to write a nice review. Never been so insulted in my life. We waited outside a waiting area for about 10 minutes. No one came out until we started to turn around and walk. Then a young lady came to the door, grabbed two menus and then said two for dinner? Yes, as she turned to take us in she looked back and said, "do you have reservations?" "No", I replied. (thinking this is Tracy CA, not Pleasanton how busy could you be). She then said, "I'm sorry we are all booked for the evening." Stopped and nothing ... "I'm sorry", she says. I saw a couple of open tables and there were people walking in still. A family of 4 was still stilling in the lobby waiting for a table. They didn't flinch I am pretty sure they didn't have reservation either. But we excused ourselves and went to a better choice, Tracy Thai, and had an much better experience. They took us in right way. They were full and made a table available I'm sure those who had "reservations", thought it was 'Good service. Nice intimate atmosphere. Good food " made from scratch. " OR "and were astounded by the quality, intimacy, and quaintness of this tiny restaurant." blah, blah, blah... will disagree. But, if there are empty tables, fill them. ANY, I mean ANY restaurant owner would have said, can you wait 15 minutes or 30 minutes (which I would have to get a good steak in my own home town) we are full right now. But no, not this place. So, for me NO THANKS. NOT THIS PLACE. I'll drive to Livermore, Pleasanton or go to someplace else ..... Oh wait, I DID! No thanks Magellan's! read more

Tomas (not Thomas as per Johnny QT's moronic review) is from Portugal and a fine host. The food is reasonably priced and a good value. The dishes are contemporary and consistent. I've never had a bad meal and we dine here once a week if not more. Wait staff of Heather and Karen are wonderful and attentive. For lunch, try the ceasar with the calamari or blackened salmon. For dinner, the filet is excellent. Whatever the meal, try the soup of the day. Fresh, velvet textures with little or no cream. Didn't see what you wanted on the wine list? A tasty surprise in an unexpected location. And no, I don't just mean Tracy. I was driving up with my family to Tahoe over the Holiday and decided to stop off on the way to go to dinner. While there were plenty of fast food and diner options, finding something a bit nicer seemed to be quite a challenge. However, after looking through several reviews I came across this place. Like many of the other reviewers have mentioned-- the location and exterior may throw you for a loop. The interior also is a bit strange. There are several tables and a bar situated in the lobby of the building, and it extends in to a main dining area to the side. As far as the food goes-- their food is great. Selection was varied (everything from Seafood-Wild Boar in the winter), the appetizers were phenomenal, and the wine list was fairly extensive. The waiter himself was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. And while he was dressed nicely and the surroundings were nice, the atmosphere was entirely unpretentious. . My only complaint? That it is out in Tracy and a bit far to go on any sort of regular basis. read more

The restaurant definitely lived up to it's reviews, and I'm sorry to have waited so long (years! sob) to try it. The appetizers were sizeable and beautifully prepared (calamari and mussels). In addition to the romantic and quietly tasteful decor, the tables are beautifully set, and the service quietly attentive and very courteous. Would also recommend the filet mignon. The rack of lamb was a little disappointing, as it wasn't as tender as it should have been, but flavor were good anyway. Spinach and shrimp salad was nicely done. Also had an excellent creme brulee and tiramisu. A particular joy for Tracy!! read more

Magellan's....the official fancy restaurant of Tracy. We go here a few times a year for birthdays and our anniversary, and everytime we go we get great service and a delicious meal. The lamb is my favorite, but Ive had their wild boar and the porterhouse and they were quite good as well. My hubby is a fan of the duck. They have a full bar and a pretty notable selection, including some smaller or higher end brands that you dont often see locally. We have always been happy with our visits there and hope they will be around for many years to come. read more

My husband and I went to Magellan for our Valentine's Day celebration - NOT ON VALENTINE'S, of course! We enjoyed everything we had and the service was outstanding. The place is very small, but intimate and romantic. Great place to go on a date. We had the crab cakes appetizer and we couldn't get enough. I had the curry scallops and they were perfect. My husband had the fish of the day and it was also perfect. The wine we ordered was from New Zealand and very good. But I would like to see them offer more local wines. We came in pretty late around 9 pm with our extended family total of 9 people. The restaurant was slow as it was only a young couple dining then left not long after we sat down. It was only our group until the restaurant closed at 9.30 pm. The server an older gentleman could have been more attentive to our table. Our empty plates for appetizers were not taken away when he served our main entrees. He poured water only once and never refilled my empty glass. The gratuity total around $ 50 that was added automatically to our check because the total number in our party was not worth it in my opinion. read more

I just moved to Tracy from the North Bay and needless to say I have been a little disappointed in the restaurant selection. I don't know how half the homes can cost more than $500,000 and there not be any fine dining. This restaurant seams to be the one exception. The ambiance is a little strange, and the wait staff is not the greatest, but the food and the wine are excellent. I had the Penne with sausage meal, while my wife had the boar special. Both had great flavor and the boar was cooked perfectly. The $20-30 price on the entrees seemed reasonable. I've been to quite a few bad $30 entree restaurants in the central valley (Modesto, Sacramento, Woodland) and this is not one of them. While the wine list was not epic, the prices were very reasonable and there were definitely a couple of gems on the list from small well respected producers. Overall I would say the experience was very enjoyable and I plan to take my friends to the restaurant when they come to town. read more

Wow, what a find! This small restaurant is tucked in between a bunch of other stores, down from a neighborhood pub. While it's easily overlooked, the service, wine, and especially food were truly incredible for a little town like Tracy. I had their filet mignon, which was one of the best steaks I've had in years (and I've eaten at virtually every major steak chain). Way better than any expensive steakhouse, and about 1/2 the price. The texture and slightly smokey flavor was balanced excellently with the not overpowering peppercorn sauce. Truly a must-try delight! Aside from that, the house-made apple pie was excellent. For a special treat, we splurged on a glass of 40-year old port wine with desert. It's rare to find such an old, tawny port, and the price was incredible. Rich, nutty, smooth, and "caramelly," this port was really a special treat. If you're looking for a great special meal in Tracy, don't overlook this place! read more

Boy, talk about being pleasantly surprised! I attended a lunch with colleagues this week and had never heard of or been to this particular restaurant. A little hidden in the back area of Tracy's downtown, this place has a succulent menu ranging from fine appetizers, unique salads, and fulfilling entrees such as steak, smoked pork, fish, and pasta. The ambience is dimly romantic, but relaxed if you are going casually to dinner. Best crabs cakes I've ever tasted! Found myself in Tracy the other night and needed to grab a nice dinner. Magellan's is the 'best' restaurant in town (consensus) so I had dinner there. Overall it is a quaint business, not a fine-dining establishment. The service was familiar and forgetful. The decor/ambiance was non-descript. The food though was really good though. I had the lamb (New Zealand) that was very good and my friend had the Duck. Both dishes were good perfectly and the accompaniments were also delicious and well-executed. The prices weren't low. They were similar to SF pricing. The food lived up to the billing, everything else did not. If you are in Tracy and are looking for great food this is your place. Just don't consider this fine dining, because it just simply lacks many of the elements that you might expect with the term, 'fine dining.' read more
