Jean shopping is a grueling quest, so I've held off for years (sticking to my skinny jeans like a true elder millennial...). I stopped by Madewell and the gals at the denim bar there helped me tremendously. Not only did they swap sizes and make sizing suggestions, but they played temporary therapist while I asked "does this look weird?" Over and over again. The customer service at this location is on point. The staff were so helpful and polite! One girl checked my item to see if it was on sale. Another stopped foldings clothes and opened up another cash register, so I didn't have to wait! There are 2 floors, the sale items are usually on the upper floor. Make sure you sign up for their insider program, and you will be able to get your bag monogrammed for free! They do monograms upstairs. It was a great shopping experience! read more

This was my first experiencing going in and purchasing clothes from Madewell. I was a little intimidated going in, but the customer service was on point. I was helped by Amanda was was extremely courteous and helpful without being pushy. She gave me her honest opinion about which jeans fit best with my frame and was diligent about checking up on me in the fitting room and bringing me additional washes and sizes. I'd heard about Madewell over and over again in Lucky magazine, particularly about their scarves. I had absolutely no idea where it was and just kind of happened to run into it on a walk down Newbury Street. Love it! The clothes are casual but stylish and still work appropriate if you're outside the corporate world (as I am). It's definitely a bit younger and more on-trend than its parent company, J. Crew. The price point is similarly high, though, but the quality seems at or close to the same level. I left with a beautifully gauzy cobalt blue pocket tee and a ruffled slate grey one-shoulder top, both of which I love. The scarves really are beautiful, but a little more than I was willing to spend on a scarf. Now, the staff...very friendly and helpful, but a little too much so. I was asked if I needed help at least seven or eight times and it got a bit tiring after a while. I was only buying a couple shirts and had no intention of trying them on. No, really. Yes, I'm sure. Man rating: tolerable. To be clear, my experience with Madewell was that of tending a woman and her sister as they marveled at this boutique offshoot of J. Crew. Downstairs, staff acknowledged my presence then kindly left me alone as I waited for the browsing to finish. After a half hour, I was directed upstairs to a couch, where the husbands and boyfriends of other shoppers had congregated, blipping away on smartphones. I joined them, as Pinocchio did at Pleasure Island. I hear the clothes are pretty good too. Overall, killing time at Madewell was a reasonable experience, thanks to that couch. Other Newbury Street boutiques should take notice. read more

The neat thing about having a Madewell in town is that the pricing in-store for sale items is often much lower than online, even with free shipping. I've managed to get a dress more than half off the original price (online, it's still original price). (Although this might backfire for them -- now that I know this, my consumption of online purchases is going to decrease.) Compared to J. Crew Copley, the sale section is less appealing, but is often less picked through -- as a reviewer stated below, hit or miss. In general, Madewell folks are generally very good about welcoming you throughout the store, and are willing to take time to offer guidance on what styles to buy. That said, my most recent experiences here have been...meh. I was shopping with a friend, and she ended up needing to try a range of sizes for a particular item. It took about ten minutes to get one of the sizes, and the delay was so long that we ended up getting them ourselves. This is especially not cool if one of you has a pretty bad limp at the time. Second, I was told that the return period for the stuff I purchased last time was shorter than what it said on the website -- would be good to be more consistent on this information. read more

I was lured here recently by offers of free hot chocolate from a quaint little cart on Newbury St. The newest outpost of J. Crew's little sister didn't disappoint, either. They're stocked full of jeans, tees, various sweaters and some spiffy accessories like Frye-style boots, large leather totes and some beautiful scarves. Their sales staff are really upbeat, very helpful and focused on moving this brand into the scene. That aside, I didn't find anything particularly compelling or different from the current offerings of J. Crew, Abercrombie or the Gap. Madewell's styles seem to lean towards a younger, casual feel, so I'd make a stop here if you possess a student ID and have a need for a breezy tunic and (some rather nice-looking) bleach-splattered white skinny jeans. read more

I love this store and finally made it to one of their Denim After Dark Events. The event features: -a DJ -sweets (cupcakes, soda, water) -20% off all Denim -free hemming and for this event, all the sale items were an additional 50% off! The sale staff were friendly and they helped me find sizes/colors of jeans I was looking for. Their jeans are comfortable and the style of clothing is laid back, fun and sweet but not girly if that makes any sense. The Newbury street Madewell is the best Madewell location I have visited. I will admit more than half my wardrobe is from this company. The newbury street location has a lot of assortment to choose from and a decent size sale section. Their leather bags and shoes are some of my favorite because of the price is cheaper than designer stores but still has a great quality. I use to wear madewell jeans but for 100 dollars a pair they rip way too easily at the crotch. All the employees are happy to help you and if they see you carrying many things to try on they start you a fitting room. All of them always tell me about special deals or sales going on. I think it's funny they have a security guard who stands at the front of the door because this store doesn't have an extensive amount of foot traffic or highly marked products. Definitely a go to store for me when I am shopping in back bay! read more

It would be 5 stars but you can't have 'Madewell' as your name and make subpar products. I have been working in the retail and the customer service industry for fourteen years. With my experiences from mid, luxury and couture I look through every lens of the customer experiences and the associate's. Bad personal days, poor management, lack of proper pay etc. may have impacts. So whenever consistent - accommadable customer service is given we should all make sure to give those responsible an extra sign of gratitude. Personally I have a hard time finding sunglass frames that accentuate my face but thanks to Madewell a perfect pair was found. Unfortunately the frames came apart last year and had to be replaced. Recently the same problem occurred and when presenting my receipt I was notified that a long duration had passed and the return was out of policy. The associate, Amy remembered me from the last time and replaced the frames despite that. Even though the store was busy, the phones were ringing and I didn't make my presence known, Amy still greeted me from afar and gave my order attention in an efficient manner. Honestly with her consistent professionalism and great fashion sense Amy represents herself and the company very well, hopefully the higher-ups at Madewell are aware of this and she is kept happy. -WGS read more

Madewell is a laid-back J. Crew adjuvant... The brand is accredited to a New Bedford textile assembler of the same name and opened its doors in 2006... This particular location on Newbury brings Madewell's trig selection to Boston... I happened to be out with a vendor who imparted most of this information to me in the short span it took us to get inside... she was equal parts astonished and thrilled the store was open and insisted we head inside... as she had covered my lunch at Stephanie's I was more than happy to oblige... I had figured to pay dutiful attention to whatever fineries she happened to point out then herd her back toward the door after an appropriate amount of time had elapsed and move on with my life, but instead I found myself wandering off to imagine how my own lady would look in one piece of girly attire or another... I grabbed a gift for a future anniversary and was inspired to track down proxies by several other pieces... fine quality apparel... all suitably modish with a surprising backbone of classic, unobtrusive lines... Madewell has hectic but helpful staff, is a touch overcrowded and is best hit on sale days if you balk at 100$ jeans - the sales are customarily staggering though, and should positively be looked at no matter your budget... I got a hello only when I was upstairs, where the sale section is. I found things to be unappealingly expensive for being on sale. The same sales associate who greeted me asked if I was finding everything ok and said goodbye to me when I descended the stairs. Sales can be hit or miss, but in the past, I've used my student ID on top of the sales price for an additional 10 or 15% off, can't remember which. read more

Unfortunately, there is no Madewell where I live so when I was here on a recent trip, I had to check it out and try on some things I'd been eyeing online. You can often find coupons and free shipping deals online, but I've heard their sales are better in-store. Return shipping costs are deducted from your refunds so off I traipsed. I went on a Monday morning so things were quiet. They had one employee on the bottom floor and one on the top. Both greeted me with sales info. The first floor had their full priced merchandise, including silk blouses, denim, and chambray shirts. The second floor had shoes, handbags, scarves, and sale section. Their prints are really fun and scarves are so soft. I'm glad I tried stuff on because they have so many chambray shirt styles with different fits and those leopard-print calf-hair sidewalk skimmers may have to be sized up. I was impressed with the quality of the flats. In-store, they don't carry XXS or skimmers in any size smaller than 6 so I may have to chance the online purchases. read more

VERY friendly staff: I purchased a sweater here in Burlington Mall and I called and had the nicest person speak to me. I thought I was allergic to the wool and with tags OFF and worn for 1 day he said I could bring it in, granted it was "sell-able" and return it. He was so nice and kind, I figured hey--I'll give the sweater one more day to see if I am truly allergic and will try it with an under shirt. It fits great and I LOVED it so I am so glad I tried again and it is not itchy. Their stuff is expensive (98 for a sweater) but super cute for either work/and or for going out on weekends. Given my background, typically I don't like shopping chains but given my present and future career choice, I've learned to get over chains and learn that there are some that are good and some that are necessary evils (Zara). I came in fully prepared not to like Madewell but I left pretty impressed. I was greeted nicely by a genuinely happy employee. The space was smaller than I expected but nicely laid out and folded (even on a busy Saturday on Newbury). I chose a few items to try on and left with a couple of nice sale items. Some of the tops I grabbed seemed a bit thin if you bought them at full price, but I got them on sale so no biggie. I enjoyed my experience and will definitely be back. read more

I absolutely adore the customer service at this store because all of the girls and managers at this location are AMAZING! I've had beyond terrible experiences at the Garden State Plaza location (where I would never go back) with who I think is a manager, but I was fortunate enough to have been introduced to Madewell via this location. This is a beautiful store. I browsed here the the other day and the fine quality and tailoring of the clothing (including the jackets/coats), the beautiful craftsmanship of the shoes and handbags was obvious. The clothes are very stylish but not too trendy. They are very tasteful and "chic", feminine and modern. I love it! If I had not already shopped so much I would be spending money here :-) There was a beautiful blue leather bag, gorgeous boots and a pink biker jacket that I thought was gorgeous. I have to applaud this location and all of the employees. After a very negative first experience, I was reluctant to return, but this was the closest location. I am happy I did. The staff is very helpful and even informed me that I was able to come in and apply a student discount off of an online purchase. They have been very accommodating in helping me find items that may not have been on the floor yet as well as asking to start me rooms, etc. read more

Quality is on par with J.Crew as they are sister stores and I'm sure use similar, if not the same, manufactures. Don't forget them show them your student IDs for 15% off. An under-appreciated gem on a powerhouse block of Newbury St. This store is J.Crew's "little funkier sister." What I love: - Tees! Tons of basics in every flavor - layering tanks, v-neck short sleeves, boyfriend fit. Their tees are amazing and their cotton and cotton blends are to-die-for soft. - Scarves! So many funky and colorful scarves to mix and match with your outfits. They also always have a great selection of scarves regardless of season. - Leggings - substantial weight/material (aka they aren't just tights!), lots of colors and styles to choose from, pretty affordable as compared to some other companies. - Jewelry - great statement necklaces and layering bracelets. - Their staff - the girls are so helpful and fashionable, checking in and offering styling advice. I do wish a few of the items were more affordable (e.g., scarves go for ~$50), but if you shop their sales you can do quite well... read more

Probably half my closet is from Madewell; however, I buy most of my cloths online and just come by this store sometimes to see items in person before deciding. BUT! Today, I had an incredible experience buying jeans. I probably have not purchased a pair of jeans in almost ten years and I'm basically afraid of jeans. I've been trying to talk myself into getting a pair and finally made it down to Madewell to try some on. I wasn't expecting to find anything and was really just trying to "get my feet wet" in the world of jeans, but the staff were SO unbelievably helpful and kind, I left with a couple pairs of jeans that I really like. I came in knowing exactly what I did NOT want and was afraid that once I started to tell the girl helping me (I wish I remembered her name- but THANK YOU!) she might feel I was being too picky, but the opposite happened. She enthusiastically made suggestions as she listened to what I didn't like and even when I shot down the first couple pairs she presented me with, she returned as positive and helpful with a few more for me to try on. I'm generally a fan of Madewell's clothes, though some are a little too hip for me. This particular location, however, continually surpasses my expectations. There's usually a great sale section upstairs, and the staff is (as other reviews have noted) more than happy to help. For the sometimes fashion-challenged, take advantage of the store's personal shopping services. I stopped in on a Wednesday afternoon to try on a dress I'd been eyeing online. One of the sales associates asked what I was shopping for, and I mentioned that I was leaving for vacation in a week. That was all it took to get up to three employees at a time bringing me item upon item and styling me for the better part of 2 hours. (Thanks Julie and Dana!) Stopped in here last night for their grand opening, enticed by offers of free food and beverages and a free tote bag with any purchase. The selection is very much as the previous reviewer said in the J. Crew/ Banana Republic style. These people know how to work a scarf. I was disappointed to find that the free "treats" were all gone by the time we arrived, the free beverages were some highly caloric sodas (no diet) and the free tote bag was really nothing to write home about. I was contemplating buying some accessories so as to be able to avail myself of the free bag offer. While I LOVED the selection of their scarves, I was pretty put off by the price tag. A simple pashima style scarf was going for $38 and others for $32. The cheapest scarf I could find was $28. I normally buy my scarves at H&M for about $6 or $7 or from street vendors or little boutiques for $10 or $15 so this wasn't quite doing it for me even with a free tote bag. So, I came, I saw, I liked the scarves, and then I left, a bit disappointed with my first introduction to Madewell. I will definitely be back if they are having a sale. Maybe I can score a scarf at 50-60% off??? Also, note that they have a student discount, 15% off with your student ID. read more

Excellent customer service; nice and friendly, very accommodating: I needed a pair of cold weather boots for a short visit to Boston and found a pair (on sale, too!); the clerks helped identity the brand I was looking for and gave sizing tips. I really like this Madewell store! I came in the other day while I was wandering around Newbury St. The store is large, and the sale section is on the second floor, so make sure not to miss it. They usually have good sales at Madewell, and when I came they had an additional 30% of sale items plus an extra 20% off for students and teachers. I found a shirt that I really liked but wanted to get an opinion on how it looked and whether or not it was work appropriate. I asked Chris, and he was great. He recommended wearing a cardigan to make it look more business casual and grabbed one for me to try on. A+ for friendly and helpful staff here! read more

Madewell, a slightly more relaxed-chic version of J-Crew, is quickly becoming one of my favorite stores. Like another reviewer mentioned, it's basically a slightly preppier version of Urban Outfitters with a more limited selection, but higher quality. The prices are pretty similar to Urban Outfitters, perhaps a bit more expensive but it isn't hard to find stuff for sale if you go at the right times (between seasons, perhaps). As a student on a budget I really have to pick and choose my purchases but they are always worth it. Their jeans are pretty nice - not really flattering on my body shape - but what I really like are their super-soft T-shirts, unusual outerwear, shoes (Bensimon sneakers = love) and scarves. My biggest success story is the other day I found a flannel shirt on sale from $78.00 to $49.00, but when the saleswoman rang it up, I ended up paying $24.00 because it was marked down even further, I guess (I didn't really ask - just got the heck out of there in case a mistake had been made :D) The shirt is really, really nice and flattering. The salespeople are nice, helpful and pretty much leave you alone unless you ask for help, which I appreciate. The only drawbacks, as I mentioned before, are the prices ($60-$70 for a nice shirt or cardigan) and the limited selection. This is nowhere near in proportion, however to the amazing clothing, nice salespeople, and clean, bright atmosphere of the store, and will not prevent me from coming back as soon as I get my next paycheck. read more

I joined Yelp just to write a review about Madewell! Love this store. Went in for the first time last night and had such a great experience. The sales people were nice and genuine, NOT snotty like so many other stores on Newbury St. They gave me honest opinions and were not trying to sell me at all. The best part... they have jeans that fit my short legs! I have finally found a store with reasonably priced jeans ($90) that I don't have to hem! It's a beautiful store and the manager was great but one extremely moody employee made both me and my friend very uncomfortable our whole time in the store. She kept shooting us nasty glances and openly being rude to us- we walked in an hour before closing time. Maybe not ideal but...didn't merit her behavior at all. Picked up a gorgeous 70's-esque shirt and some great accessories. I'm travelling from out-of-country and I had an impossible time with my credit card. The staff was so great about the inconvenience. Love, love, love this store!! It is two stories full of great clothes on Newbury Street. The type of clothing that they sell is preppy and bright. They have the basics of T-shirts, tank tops, jackets, and shoes (the basics are more expensive then they should be though). Yet, they also sell trendy styles of dresses and tops. To sum up the style it is a mixture of trendy chic meets preppy school girl. Their prices are not very cheap however. You will not find things at low end prices like you could at Forever 21, but I think it is worth it because their clothes last for a long time and can be worn for multiple seasons. read more

yeah, it's a bit overpriced and yeah, the salespeople are kinda pushy (but they're nice and i've worked in corporate retail too, and it sucks, so whatever, it's not their fault) but they are like the only store ever to have jeans that are nice and skinny without being RIDICULOUSLY LONG on me. i'm not that short! i'm 5'5! i have long-ish legs for my height! but ALL jeans either bunch up like crazy around the ankles or have to be cuffed up like 5 inches. They have these cropped jeans there (cropped for...very tall girls) that fit me PERFECTLY in every way. hit right at the ankle, tight through the whole leg, make my butt look gooood, etc. I bought them in two washes (too bad they don't come in more washes, they have some ridiculous and awesome choices with some of the other styles of pants) and i wear them like every day and i love them. also, the student discount is pretty rad. read more
