After the situation we called the manager to ask what was going on. Lindsey the manager LIED to us about our receipts having a survey to fill out. Tons of seasonal candles and clothing as well as hair accessories and jewelry. 3-4 registers going at once so the line was moving constantly. Decent amount of items on markdown in a small back room. I really enjoyed my experience at Anthropologie. I'd been into the new location a number of times to browse, and everyone has always been kind and helpful. I like how spread out the store is. The racks don't feel on top of each other, but there is still a lot of different options and inventory out. Last time I went in I was specifically looking for my bridal shower. I originally ordered some dresses online but ultimately had to return them. I called the store the day before to ask a question and spoke with Pilar. I told her my reasons for shopping and the next day when I went in she helped me pull so more dresses. She even checked the back for items not out on the floor. She was fantastic and everyone I interacted with that day was as well. I've enjoyed visiting this location and I will continue to do so! read more

Since this store moved from Boylston to Newbury St., I've been in here a few times. I pass right by it when I go to my hair salon and their usually lovely window displays often beckon me. The move into this huge, light, bright and airy store was a smart idea. The layout of the two floors here beats their former location on Boylston Street by a mile. But I have an ambivalent relationship with Anthropologie. From a marketing standpoint, they really know what they're doing. The wide variety of goods are always attractively displayed making it a compelling place to browse. You almost can't help yourself. And although I might like to look around in here from time to time, more often than not I leave vaguely disappointed and jaded. Most of the ceramics for example are churned out from China. And while some of them may be compelling or cute I know they are not going to be things I will love and value for a long time. Nor am I sure they will even hold up. Given the relatively high prices tacked onto these cheaply made wares, I can say no pretty easily. I'm doing my best not to add to things I tire of seasonly and then eventually cart off to the dump or try to "recycle" at a yard sale.. Although I've found some of the clothes attractive and interesting I feel the store is simply selling a mass-produced version (which is really oxymoronic if you think about it) of "bohemian chic" and of not so great quality to boot. These clothes too are mostly from China. This is primarily a place to admire attractively presented items in a pretty shop. It can be entertaining to walk around the store and maybe get an idea or two. Anthropologie does a good job of selling an image; it's their image of what you or your home should look like. But if you're looking for better quality things whether it be for home decor or clothing, you can probably do better elsewhere. Not necessarily less expensive things but better quality.. Get some ideas here and then find items elsewhere that better reflect your own uniqueness. That's the ticket! read more

But also because I need another eye to tell me what looks good and what looks great on. The fashion-forward ladies at Anthro have a keen sense of choosing outfits that look good on just about every body type. ANNND their honest when it doesn't look right too. Placed an online order. Received notification it was ready. Checked the store hours and arrived 20 minutes after they opened. Doors open, walk in and head to the register. I was then told they don't open till 1030. I asked how that was possible when the website says 10. They say "we're doing construction today and won't open till 1030". Okay fine, but I quickly say I just need to pick up an online order. They refuse saying they can't help me till 1030. It's 1019 for the record. read more

I have been shopping at Anthropologie for over 15 years and have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Shopping there is a splurge for me and I usually get my birthday present there. I live in a rural area three hours from the Boston store on Newbury Street, as a result I mostly shop online. However, every year near my birthday, I go into the city to see the clothes in person and pick out something nice and use my birthday discount. My birthday is at the very end of September and I've always been able to use my discount within a month of my birthday. This year, I drove three hours to shop and celebrate my birthday (two week after my actual birthday). The manager acted like I was trying to get away with something and told me in a cold way that I could not use my birthday discount because it is only valid during the month of September (even though my birthday falls at the end of the month). I had driven a long way and just said ok, and bought my things but it really felt icky. read more

Anthropologie on Boylston offers beauty for the eyes in the middle of a gray winterscape. It has some of the most interesting and beautiful window displays in the city. Within the store, clothes, accessories, and home goods are attractively arrayed on mannequins and tabletops. If nothing else, what a fantastic place to browse and window shop. My biggest problem with this Anthro location is their crowded and disorganized clearance section. They have racks in an open space for dresses, pants, and coats, but the tops and skirts are in this small back room that is very difficult to navigate, especially when the store is busy. In large part because of the cramped quarters, this room quickly gets disorganized, with items on the floor, hanging askew, and mis-filed with on the wrong racks. One of the joys of shopping at Anthro is finding a gem in the clearance, but that's so frustrating to try here. I know some people like this, but I also don't like having to give my name at the fitting room and then having the sales associate check in with me by name. I know it's intended to be a helpful service, but it makes me feel rushed at times. I wish they would ask if you'd like them to check back, or let the customer seek their assistance. Can we talk a minute about the ginormous wooden doors to this store? They're seriously huge, and stretch almost to the top of the 2.5 story structure. The doors often get stuck ajar because of their massive size and the uneven cobblestones, and then people try to squeeze through the opening instead of actually opening the doors. Traffic jam! Not that I blame them, because the doors weigh 3 million pounds. Anthro, your doors are gorgeous, but really not practical. I do appreciate that even when the sales line is long, check out moves pretty quickly. Anthro seems good about getting more staff to the check out when needed, and the sales associates I've interacted with have all been good at handling transactions (even ones involving multiple forms of payment, returns, etc.). Plus, the line winds through some of those attractive table displays so there is usually something lovely to look at while you wait. I'm basing this review on this specific Anthropologie location, NOT the Anthropologie company or chain. That said, I do want to mention some disappointing lapses in quality lately--clothing that rips or frays on the hanger in the store, missing buttons, or thin, unlined garments. For Anthro's prices, I expect a high quality product every time. read more

I am standing in line to purchase two items, not on sale. The total would be about $300. The check out line was four ladies deep. I'm number five. Another woman behind me. After waiting in line 15 minutes, the woman behind me proceeds to walk up to the counter while telling me she isn't "cutting in line-she is an employee and has to be checked out by the girl at the end of the counter.". I waited about five more minutes in Purgatory, watching paint dry and stewing. So, I left my items on the counter and walked out. Horrible service. I won't be back. read more

I think it's very wrong for the store to not offer full exchange for a something that you bought full price that is now on sale. It has been 3 weeks since I got the item. I paid a lot of money for an item and they should really offer full exchange for what you paid for. It is like being robbed. No receipt or not, it doesn't matter it's not right. Oh my god, I feel a little pukey. I just found out Anthropologie is owned by Richard Hayne, who contributed over $13,000 to Rick f*cking Santorum's campaign. All the marketing research being done has clearly worked - the clothes and housewares are all charmingly feminine but not overbearingly so. The prices are a bit silly but - the clothes fit well and last. I'm a short woman with big boobs and hips and the stuff here actually flatters and there is no muffin-top or double-boob to be found on my sillouhette when the clothes are on. I just bought a top here that consistently has women practically prostrate with admiration. But...blergh. Rick Santorum!?! It makes me want to cry to think that one penny of my money went in that direction politically. I totally bought into the aesthetic that seemed to read as liberal. I have a strange relationship with Anthropologie that I've mentioned in reviews of other locations. I love going into the store. I love going through the kitchen goodies, to the candles, to the luxurious bedding, to the beautiful dresses. But, as much as I love going through all of their items, I rarely buy anything. Everything is so expensive! And the prices can't possibly match up with their target demographic. Who can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a duvet for a college dorm? Shoot, I know people with real jobs & spouses & families & they STILL can't afford Anthro bedding lol. But it sure is nice to look at, isn't it? Anyway, I digress. This Anthropologie location is lovely. Deceptively huge - it looks like it takes up at least two store sizes, if not three. There's a lot of room to wander & peruse without being bothered. circa 1992-1996 I thought this place sucked. I thought it was full of crochet dresses, entitled moms, and drug rug vests. Either I am getting older or the inventory has changed. I needed a dress for a wedding. I had a psychic premonition that I was going to be asked to read at this wedding, so I wanted a nicey one. I had been searching everywhere's. The internets, the boutique's, I even went to the freakin' Galleria!! no dress. time is running out. Crap!! I know weddings aren't about me unless they are mine. Anthropologie is where you go if you're having a crappy day and want to treat yourself, or if you have an extra bit of cash to spend, or if you want to look a little bit hippy and a little bit Swedish milk maid. Seriously though, I like this store a lot. I don't quite love it, because their clothes and my body don't always get along (make room for boobs, people! really!), but the things I have purchased here I love. The sale section is great for finding less-intimidatingly-priced clothing that's still very cute. Anthro has my heart. When I came to Boston on a trip, one of the most important destinations what the Anthropologie store by REI on Boylston St. Urmmm.... Wait. Newbury Street?! Yeah, unfortunately Anthro moved from it's spacious loft location (the one I promised my mom I would buy her if I ever won the lottery) to a more cramped space by Timberland (how did you get there?!) on Newbury St. Yes, the high brow street of Boston, Newbury. Reviewing it now, I can't give it 5 stars because of the lack of space in the new location. I know there is no way to contain wonderful-ness but Anthro really needs a bigger space. (And c'mon, with the prices it charges, we should get a bigger space to shop in!) Needless to say, the Boston location has always has great sales and bargins found deep in the bowels of the store. Their jewelry is AH-mazing (hint, hint to any yelp friends who want to get me a gift...) and their home section is HUGE! Yes, we all love Anthropologie; the unique, funky, hip, shabby chic home-wears and peasanty clothing. Yes, the fun couches, paisley bedding, chunky glass door knobs, draped curtains, yummy smelling candles, and charmingly chipped/rusted furniture makes us wish our homes were decorated like the loft of Anthropology. However: I must play devil's advocate here. Unless you've got some serious dough to throw down, Anthropologie's prices are way past affordable. So go there, get inspired, use a little creativity and get the same look by hitting up some junk-tique shops and thrift stores, you'll be surprised at the "Anthropologie" treasures for a fraction of the price. read more

I'll admit, I followed a French couple around this store once. They admired the vintage-looking furniture and housewares, but generally passed over the clothes. I was preparing to jet off for an internship in Paris, and since I couldn't study the French in their natural habitat just yet, I studied them all over Newbury. Talk about anthropology. When I admire something on a friend or colleague, it's usually from this store. But when I come here to shop for myself, I'm overwhelmed and tend to leave empty-handed. Everything is either gorgeous, intricate, and very expensive, or plain and seemingly overpriced for how plain it is. I love the idea of the store and how well it all pulls together into one theme, but it's not quite my style. Or I should say that I'm junk at figuring out how to complement my harsh modern clean-lines style with vintage-like whimsy. However, despite the high prices, I can't seem to get enough of this store. If I'm feeling slightly depressed, down, whatever, Anthropologie is pure shopping therapy. I love looking at all the little things on all the little shelves. Many of said things are shiny and/or smell good. If asked where one could purchase me a gift, I would send them here. A woman's dream, but a boyfriends' nightmare. I couldn't stop giggling to myself when I made my way upstairs to the sales section of the store. Women were carefully examining the racks of colorful, playful clothing, while their men were occupying every cushioned surface available (and there appeared to be plenty). There are no men's clothes to peak at in this store, just adorable women. But women aren't the only eye candy here. At Anthropologie, the clothes, accessories, and decorations are pleasing to look at and touch. I love texture and color, so this place really does it for me with everything they offer from kitchenware to jewelery to dresses. The prices, however, do me less good; yet on occasion, you'll find a real gem hidden tucked within the rows of color-categorized clothes upstairs. read more

I stop in here a lot to browse, and hit the sale section. The main thing is the sale section. Everything in here is marked up to high holy hell, and there's no way I would pay full price. Am I cheap? Damn straight. The sale section currently always seems to have high end cosmetics and face/body products for cheap and I am loving it......I got some Stila eyeliner, some Paul and Joe eye shadow, and an array of Natural Girl facial cleansers and washes, that are normally $38 for $3.95. Nothing, or very little, beats scoring bargains like that. Also, they usually have funky pillows, bathroom accessories, and all sorts of glassware for very cheap also. Things I will buy at full price here: Capri candles, books, and.....that's it. The clothing is cute, but doesn't seem to be a very high quality for the price. I've gotten some tops in the past for cheap, and they are just okay, but nothing super. Go for the sale section!! read more

Anthropolgie is excellent. I remember back when it was basically a catalogue company that reached out to me in my high school days in rural Virginia - ha. Flash forward - incredible selection of clothing and housewares (some really beautiful flatware and glasses). Always stocks a good selection of jeans interspersed between the trend @ the time (cropped jackets, nautical shirts, long gauzy shirts, etc). Really fantastic jewelry in recent years as well..... Their sale section is overwhelming and often not that great - but if you are willing to dig through it I am sure you will find something you like. read more

Is there an antidote for Anthropoligie??? Okay, I'll be the first to admit it, and most of my friends will attest that, I'm a HUGE clothes junkie. But who wouldn't be if they found all the clothes they adored and ever imagined under a single roof?! Obviously, the prices are a bit "out there" for most of us, but I feel it's still consistent with the quality and character of the merchandise. Don't you really get what you pay for? Also, their clothes fit me so perfectly; it's almost as if they were tailored. (How *do* they work that black magic???) I'm sure everything I've purchased will last longer than I really need it to...and the styles are elegant and unique enough to hold their own through the years, if necessary. (I tend to go for the stuff that looks more vintage than trendy; but they have styles for every taste.) I think it's reasonable to say that my (future) grand-daughters, or somebody, will owe me......BIG TIME!!!! read more

5 stars for how it makes my mouth water when I walk in the doors, but minus one star for making my wallet cry. I came here hoping to find something I could afford. Their cutesy clothing was typically $50+ for a single tshirt, nothing I was willing to dish that much out for. Hey, I'm a TJ Maxx / Marshalls kinda gal. I need a good deal. I headed over to their kitchen accessories and found lots of things I would love to own, especially the adorable kitchen aprons. I would love to play Suzie-house-wife and own one of them... but again.. too expensive. Upstairs they actually had a sale/clearance area, but nothing was under $30. I just kind of gave up after a while. Plus everyone wondered around the store with their head held high like they were made of money and I wasn't. Oh well. This is where I go when I am in desperate need of a little retail therapy. It's probably important for me to say that I have two loves : shopping for clothes, and buying pointless knickknacks and overpriced kitchen goods. Therefore, it's safe to say this is close to my mecca. My behavior is pretty similar to a small child in a toy store. I grab everything, smell everything, try everything on. The only downside... their prices. We're all struggling a bit in these tough economic times, but I still find myself justifying buying a $12 oven mitt (It matches the $18 salt and pepper shakers I bought from here last month obviously) That's how this store works for me...I walk in, pick something up, decide I have to have it, look at the price, put it down, walk around in a circle, and then come back, pick it up and ultimately buy it. However, their clothes are beautiful. They have intricate designs, cute patterns, and a great fit. A lot of their clothes you don't find anywhere else which really helps in my justifying process. If I had to choose one store to buy clothes at for the rest of my days, I might just choose Anthropologie. It is hands down my favorite place to drop silly (but not ridiculous) amounts of cash at for the sweetest and most delectable apparel. This store is my answer to dressing like I'm in a French New Wave movie...I even bought one skirt there that I call my Anna Karina skirt, because I feel like I'm skipping down a beach, running through the Louvre, babbling existentialist nonsense in French and exchanging sultry glances with Jean Belmondo all at the same time whenever I wear it!! I have a very love/hate relationship with Anthro. For these prices, the customer service could be hugely improved upon. Also, I hate to say it, but since they first opened, they've 75% pretty seriously gone downhill. And their politics suck. But I've still been shopping here ever since their store first opened in SF---for sales, and sometimes things I just can't find elsewhere. Frinstance, last week, the first bathing suit I've ever tried on that didn't make me look like either a failed tramp or an 8 year old, or both. So you see why, even when the customer service person tells me they'll call other stores and ship it to me free, but then never call me back, and the warehouse ships me the wrong color, and they can't do an exchange in the store but instead I "have" to buy it twice, and they aren't nice about it at all, I'm still stuck. But from now on, it will *really* only be for completely irreplaceable things. read more

The girl working the dressing rooms (Jessie? Jenny?) helped my tie up the back of a sort of complicated dress I was trying and didn't make me feel retarded for asking for help. Yeahy! I am a fan of this place despite it's awkward 70s patterns and rather high prices. My strategy is to head straight upstairs to the sale clothes first and then when I've tried enough things that I don't want to change out of my clothes anymore, I give the other stuff a glance. The last two times I have come here I used this strategy and ended up wanting to buy sale items that had missing tags. Both times I waited 15-20 minutes for various pages, phone calls, and methods of SKU look-ups to occur so I could find out the amazing prices I had scored. This didn't really bother me at the time, but an improved system couldn't hurt. Sweet cups, bowls, and plates are in the $4-$6 range and I've been pining after one of their aprons since I was about 12. When I finally move out of the dorms next year, you can bet my kitchen will be stocked with some sweet (and cheap) Anthro duds. read more

Oh, Anthropologie, you are and will always be the unattainable store for me. You see, many suns and moons ago, back when the decade was called "the 90s", I learned about a funky, yet chic store in Boston. A very fun and cool girl told me about it. She worked with me back in the 90s and was like the older sister I never had, but always wanted. Anthropologie in a way is like the cool older sister, but she's too expensive. I couldn't afford to shop at Anthropologie then and I dare say I might be able to afford a trinket or two today. That's why I have to give the store the big three. I wish I was secure enough in my finances to spend my hard earned cash at your lovely store, but we're in a recession. Kinda like the opposite of the 90s. read more

You know that scene in Breakfast at Tiffany's in which Holly describes Tiffany's as the perfect place where nothing bad could ever happen to her? Anthropologie is my Tiffany's. If I were rich, I would be here every day. Since I'm not, I hit the sale section almost every day. If you never ventured up to the hidden cove of the second floor that is my personal paradise, you'd probably think this store was nothing more than overpriced hipster-prep-femme wear. But just last night I got a pair of Joe's Jeans marked down from $158 to $19.99. You can't even get jeans at Old Navy for $19.99! Ocassionally I'll peruse their housewares, books, kitchen accessories, etc. And once in a while, they'll also have amazing sales on those. Maybe I don't necessarily need a cookie jar, or an old-fashioned juice squeezer, or an apron--but little details like that make me happy (and what's the harm in a little extra happiness?). The staff here is great. Friendly when you want to interact with them, not overbearing when you don't. And they put up with my multiple trips to the dressing room. In short, sure, you first need to fit the aesthetic/style/taste of this store to enjoy it. Then, you gotta do a little sale-rack-surfing to REALLY enjoy it. But it's worth it :) read more

Wow, is this an INCREDIBLY over-priced store, or what? Not that I am not being completely sucked in by their ultimate coolness, but still. I had never heard of Anthropologie, until a friend of mine in the UK started touting all their bags and clothes and religion. So, when I came to Boston for an interview and to search for apartments, I had gotten lost walking down Boylston and I discovered this store. I only bought one thing, but I was so tempted for more. I bought a pair of large, Jackie O. type, sunglasses for $40. Very overpriced, but I adore them just the same. However, I was very disappointed that after spending that money on a pair of sunnies, they did not have any cases to give me. Overall, I would give them five stars for love, four stars because they are overpriced, and three stars because they couldn't even give me a case! Also, after a few months, I accidentally dropped them off my head, and now they are scratched and I am heart broken. :( I love this store, but paying to keep my heat on is a more important purchase this year. read more

Well, as a straight man I can't say I was a fan of this store. Here's a hint girls: Unless you are somehow trying to test a boyfriend or male friend, don't bring them here. Chances are they won't enjoy it very much. Nevertheless I amused myself by playing with silly things like hats and spelling out words with the plentiful little hooks and the like adorned with letters. Apparently the staff and clientele did not appreciate my comments on functionality and practicality of almost every item in the store, but you can't win 'em all. The pessimist in me knows it would have been so easy for anyone closing to take it for their own. Instead they saved my lovely new clothes I bought with my grandmother and set them aside for me.
