I always feel a little bit dirty (and not in a good way) whenever I walk into this store. Macy's is generally an excellent department store but this location just makes my skin crawl. The customer service is spotty and good luck getting someone to help or answer your questions. I came here a few weeks ago in the middle of the day and could not find a salesperson on the entire upper floor. FAIL. I came here last week for a couple of men's dress shirts for Vegas and a very nice, helpful salesman took me around the floor and helped me choose some very nice shirts. His time and attention to detail were excellent. He was a younger middle eastern guy. Wish I could remember his name! I'd go back and take everything to him just so he'd get the commission, unlike all those people who hide on the 3rd floor. read more

So I havn't returned to Macy's in well over two years to buy ANYTHING (complete lack of Customer Service being the main issue) and going back today it looks like nothing has changed. A friend of mine wanted to buy some shirts and was wondering if they had it in a different size. Looked around and couldn't find anyone to help us. And ironically before that there was several employees all standing around chatting to each other and noone bothered making eye contact, smiling, or greeting us. It's always a good idea stop by Macy's when you have to buy so many different presents for different people! I like the idea that in just one stop you can basically find whatever you need from clothes to beauty products. This location works greatly for me, It's close to home, and the store is located exactly by the parking lot. The store could be more clean and organized, all the escalators were out of order, not a big deal to me, but I saw elder people struggling a bit, I felt bad for them. And there really isn't any customer service; unless you go to the shoe departments, but that's because they have to get the shoe for you. It's really difficult to shop here. 2 days in a row I wanted to buy a puffer jacket. The first time I was followed by security. Which I understand. But for crying out loud they should have asked if they could help me, instead of driving me out of the store. The 2nd time I went in and actually found a jacket I wanted to buy. When someone asked me if they could help I explained I would like this one in medium. Instead she shows my a totally different jacket albeit in medium. But not the one I wanted to buy. I've stopped shopping at Macy's regularly over the last few years. They have a lot of clothing and accessories here, but it often feels like a mess. There are clothes everywhere, and everything is on sale all the time, and don't forget your coupons at home. I often find myself going to the price check because I have no idea how much anything is. I tried to shop for men's clothes here and just felt awful because of how scattered everything is. That's too bad because there is a lot of decent stuff at Macy's, but it should be sorted better. read more

I love me some Macy's sales. I mean they only happen 360 days of the year, so you gotta be on top of the game to take part in such a rare occurrence. I kid b/c I care. I feel like Macy's can totally be a hit or miss experience. I shop here often enough that clearly if I "keep coming back" then obviously it's worth it. What happened to this place it use to be one of the best places to shop in tbe Bay Area. The selections and designers have fallen so bad Walmart has better selections these days. No good brand names for shoes or clothes place is dirty and never anyone to help you. God forbid if your not white or privileged you get no service when the service you get is rude and racist. I was asked if I could afford to purchase my wifes necklace one time bad but not as bad as lady in the jewelry department on purpose avoiding us then saying what I don't have time for window shoppers or the cake of it all sorry sir we don't have a layaway plan please shop where you can afford. I haven't been into a Macy's in almost a decade and after getting a glimpse of what they're all about today, I wish I'd have kept the streak going longer. The best Macy's of today is a lesser version of the worst Burlington Coat Factory 20 years ago. They're sad, dirty, and run down. Letters on their headline section signs are totally missing and the clothing is all stuff that was barely in style in 1997. I don't understand how they're still a functioning store. They need to bring the hammer down from the top down because the people in charge of the greater Macy's legacy are clearly out of touch and past their expiration date. This Macy's has really seem to go downhill. Maybe it's the economy, maybe it's the location. Who knows!!!! I've always shopped at Macy's my entire life as an adult at least. They would have up to date clothing and styles at a fair price or maybe that was then. Nowadays it seems like the company is cutting back on staff to save money? Kinda seems like a deserted big box store when I shop there now. I guess the online shopping has taken over. I like this location because it is convenient and close to me. I find my myself here to window shop and kill time and sometimes find a good deal. Don't get me wrong, I love to shop but hardly do I find myself paying full price for items, especially when I get it at a sale price or discounted. Macy's always have a couple of racks of sale items and if you have the time to search you will find some stuff. Macy's - Seriously? - Department Stores Near Me - San Mateo, California

I came here to return an item I had bought online on a brand's shop. I don't shop much, and even less in Macy's, so I thought it was totally fine to return an item I bought online in Macy's. WRONG. Not only it took more than 30 minutes to get it done, but also NOBODY explained to me that what I was receiving was NOT a refund, but a check. Funny is, this check can only be spent in Macy's, it is a mere piece of paper that could easily get lost or worn out. I actually called the brand because I hadn't received my refund in my credit card for over a week, and they told me I was not supposed to return the merchandise at Macy's, but at a brand shop. I didn't know this, and the cashier at Macy's didn't tell me anything like that, so I was clueless. And now I feel cheated because I won't get my money back in my credit card but it is not the brand's fault. I get my money back in a paper check for Macy's... the prices are lower on the brand's page than in Macy's because there are usually discount coupons. So in the end, I'm going to have to spend extra $ just to buy the same thing at Macy's, if I don't lose the paper check they wrote me by then! read more

So we came here because we were in the area and hadn't come to this mall for a while we went in and checked out the mens cologne because my husband got a cologne he didn't like. I wish I would remember the names of the ladies who helped us unfortunately I do not but next time I'll be sure to look at name tags. While in the mens cologne my husband knows about his colognes he's been studying them and the fragrances and all the other spices so he is well aware of what he is doing. He already had in mind of some he wanted to smell. The lady that helped him at first seemed Russian idk but she was pushing him to a cologne that he did not want nor care for he is more into the eau de perfume because it last longer and she kept pushing onto other ones he was set on the Armani code he has a collection. And he wanted to get one that he doesn't have the lady eventually sold him the one he wanted but she was stubborn on selling the bigger bottle but he was like no because I just have a collection. She just rolled her eyes and said ok. After the purchase he was not given samples nor a thank you nothing she just walked away after the purchase. He still stuck around to smell the other colognes. Then we had help from another lady before we left we asked if he can get samples since none was given to him. The lady then said they had none NONE really. It was unbelievable because it's the cologne section. She them went to the lady's side and got 1 sample. He spent 130 on a cologne and 1 sample. Thanks for your customer service but we will be taking elsewhere. Hone6we felt like they were racist because we are Mexican and my husband has tattoos that are visible perhaps they just saw him as a thug trying to get freebies but he has a collection and it's like a hobby to him kinda like girls with shoes but his is colognes. RALPH LAUREN/POLO SECTION SUCKS..... I needed some new shirts for a business trip. Arrived at this Macys to check out the Polo/RL clothes since that brand are the best for men in business world. Unfortunately, the Ralph Lauren clothing section was simply abysmal. Hardly any clothes on the racks. What was available was simply out of style (no Macy Shopper anymore, I suppose) but the glaring mistake was that all of the clothes was in different sections. Tommy H clothes, Calvin, etc. all hanging in the Polo section. It was impossible to shop and not a single employee on the floor to help. (They are all apparently at the perfume counters - it is the only area one can see a Macy's employee) GUYS, avoid this Macy's (and the mall since there are no men's clothiers anywhere). The City is still your best bet. Too bad. So much potential for this Macys being in the heart of the Valley and the manager has given up. read more

We just had a fantastic experience while shopping for a men's suit. Sabbagh helped us find the best fit, colors, tie and shoes for a work event we have tomorrow night. You don't get retail service like this anymore. He was kind, attentive, helpful and knowledgeable about the styles. I have to say I at first I was worried that we wouldn't get service because he was alone and helping others. However, he managed to help us and two others smoothly even checking in to see if we were ok. We really enjoyed the experience and will look for him next time we need anything in his department. read more

Sad to now christen this store "Meh-cy's." My dad used to talk about travelling to Macy's in NYC during the holidays. It was a big deal to go there, get your Christmas clothes, and experience that quintessential big-city Christmas. That good feeling about Macy's made him a life-long customer. I used to love going to Macy's, too (both in general, and this Macy's in particular). They carried all my favorite brands and offered service that was professional, but still friendly. And shopping there felt like a fun and special event (to a young kid, anyway). But now? If I have to go here, it's begrudgingly. Sure, I still do shop here, but I grit my teeth. In some departments, assistance is completely unavailable. In others, you have to wait forever just to make your purchase. And you'll almost always find things misplaced or mismarked, and get little more than a "meh, sort of sorry, I guess" as a response. (On the other hand, I guess that's preferable to the irritated responses my mom has received more than once -- Don't tell my mom "that's not my job," because it don't go over too well.) And in yet others, it's almost as though you're bothering them if you ask for help. I find this especially notable at the Clinique counter. I have really good memories of my first "real" "grown-up" make-up purchase in high school, which took place in this very store, from this very brand. And for years, I'd come here and they'd bend over backwards to help you choose your makeup (sure, it's about sales, but it's also about service). Now, it's as though you're a distraction to... whatever they're doing, even if no other customers are around. No effort to help you... and no real effort to sell you anything or make you a happy customer, either. SUCH a massive turnoff. To be fair, some parts of the store (to be specific: the "towel" section, and lingerie *if* you can find someone) are friendly and helpful. The "china" section isn't too bad, either. Otherwise, it's a gamble, so brace yourself. Dear Macy's, WAKE UP. I can walk a few yards and go to Nordstrom, where I can buy some of the same stuff *for the same price* and get MUCH friendlier service. Or, I can order things online and circumvent the entire in-store process entirely. Please, please, up your service game, or you'll go the way of the dodo. Encouraging your associates to smile and help customers costs you nothing... yet will grant you repeat business (rather than sad Yelp reviews). read more

Macy's, what happened to you? I always shopped for dress shoes at Macy's. I was there today for half an hour waiting for one of the employees to assist or even ask if I needed help, and nothing. The mens shoe dept was a mess. The shoes were sloppily displayed, lots of empty shelf space and dis-organized. It wasnt even busy. I went to Macy's to buy a duvet today for my new comforter with my best friend. It was a toss up between a plain white 600 TC Hotel Collection one for $135 or a really cute pleated one from Anthropologie for $250. Let's see- I have no job, and I shouldn't be spending my money, so naturally, my best friend says get the Hotel Collection one. OK. We go to pay for my duvet at the register right across from the Hotel Collection display. We have to wait a while, but I'm so stoked that my $200 duvet is on sale for $135, that I don't mind (even though all the while I have to take a shit- no joke). $146.13? Alright. I hand over my BofA debit card. SA swipes it and I enter my pin. SA mumbles that it didn't go through, and we go through this motion twice more before she asks me if I want to use another card. Now, I'm 100% sure that I haven't overdrawn my account and that I have enough money in my account to pay for the duvet. OK, so now I have to call my bank to figure out what's going on. If I were at Nordstrom, the SA would have been on that stat; no, no, no, I'm at Macy's where they don't have that kind of customer service. BofA operator says that there is nothing wrong with my card and there has been no fraudulent charges, it's not overdrawn and there's money in my account; if there's something wrong, it's on Macy's end. I have a pending transaction for $146.13? It went through at Macy's West in San Mateo at 5:20 PM? Oh, it went through? -- She knew this without me telling her what I was buying. The Macy's SA says there's none of the transactions could have gone through because she voided all 4 or 5 of them. Oh really? So why the $146.13 pending charge? Just imagine, I have to take a shit, I'm frustrated because apparently I've been charged $146.13 yet Macy's has no record of it, and this SA has no clue what's going on. It's now been more than 20 minutes and nothing has been resolved. I ask to see the manager and it takes nearly 10 minutes for her to come. Now I'm 30 minutes into trying to buy a duvet and things aren't getting any better. The manager, Fern C. says that she's sorry for the inconvenience. Gee, thanks. She asks to speak to the BofA operator, so I let her use my phone. I can hear them talking and Fern is acting like she knows what's up even though I don't think she really knows. She tells the BofA operator that she understand but maybe she should explain that to the customer. Isn't that her job? After everything is said and done, Fern and the SA insist that I wasn't charged anything despite BofA having record that I was charged $146.13 and the transaction is pending; I'm supposed to monitor my bank account online or by calling BofA to see if the money was subtracted and I still don't have a duvet. I wasn't offered any consolation aside from, "Oh, we'll hold it for you." The situation was poorly handled by both the SA and manager. I really wish more places had customer service like Nordstrom; it's too bad Nordstrom doesn't have cheap bedding. And in case you're wondering (this is for bryan k.), I made it home to poo, but had a really bad stomach ache that came with it. :( ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just called BofA and they confirmed that the money was withdrawn from my account. I seriously have no clue why anyone would shop at this store. You can get almost everything they carry somewhere else, and not have to look around for someone to just take your money so you can pay and leave. The merchandise looks like it's been thrown up en masse like a jump ball, and hey, wherever it lands, so be it. It's like a kid's messy room. As previous reviews said, this certain Macy's is very disorganized and filthy. Although this store carries better brands it is hard to find help. Good finds come from digging through the racks and bins. Pros: -Good selection of name brands (Sperrys) -Reasonably priced sales Cons: -Dirty store covered in scraps of trash and clothes on the floor -Where are the store associates hiding?! -Misleading coupon sales (Not even I. I refer to Macy's as the "necessary evil". They are everywhere, have pretty good selection and good sales. Service is almost always bad at any location. Some are better than others. This isn't one of them. I would say Hillsdale is far worse than union square but better than Serramonte, which is like entering a war zone. The red coupon cards I get in the mail as a thank you for being such a GREAT customer are a joke. When you read the fine print nothing is eligible. Today I tried once again to use a card as I had four of them. None of them applied to the clothing items I was buying. I tossed all of them to the clerk and asked him to just throw them away. He actually agreed that they are almost useless and gave me 10% off my whole purchase. That was nice but it's not going to happen every time. I don't know who managing this store but they need more focus on service and their employees need to at least act like they give a shit read more

It is August 2019. If you go near the escalator looking at the directory, the restroom is on the 3rd floor. I take the escalator to the 3rd floor. After asking the lady that rang my purchases, she says due to construction the restroom is in the basement. That is my complaint. Just change the directory sign. read more

LISA that works at the Clinique counter is AWESOME and VERY professional! Unlike the OPINION recently posted about her on here. Some people have to understand that during gift time, there are stipulations! You have to purchase a certain amount to receive a gift. It is frustrating for sales associates to keep explaining this to customers (i used to work in retail so I know). There is ALWAYS 2 sides to a story. A lot of times the CUSTOMER is being difficult and trying to get what they want by complaining- NOT COOL. Then they come onto platforms like this and tell a false story because they can't get what they want. I just wanted to put my 2 cents into this, and gush about Lisa because she has been an amazing sales associate for YEARS and plenty of her loyal customers will agree. read more

I normally don't write about places like this, but I had such a horrible experience at this store the other day that this in part serves as therapy. Before I go on further I have to say that I have never been very fond of Macy's. I have had many bad experiences over the year mostly related to customer service, but also feel that the store is not very well organized and much prepare spending my time and money elsewhere. I always try to give Macy's a chance, but more often than not end up disappointed. I should also say that my complaints may not so much be entirely this particular stores problem but rather an issue with the Macy's organization as a whole. The other day the hubs and I went to return some stuff we hard ordered online. That in itself was a very painful process due to a poorly designed and supported website, again not this stores problem, but as a result of it we had a lot of stuff to return. It was our first time ordering from Macy's online and let's just say we'll never do it again. We started out looking for the customer service area since at most other stores you can just take the stuff you purchased online to that department and they'll take care of all of it for you. We looked at the map posted by the entrance where we came it and it indicated that it was near women's shoes. We walked over there and it wasn't there. Then we looked for the signs they have on the ceiling. It indicated it was back where we came from. All we saw was a register so we waited and asked the lady working there if she could help us. She said she could, but she could only return the stuff that was from her department and that we'd have to go to each department to return all our things. That was inconvenient, but the worst part of it was that people kept giving us contracdicting information for which department we needed to go to for each thing. The other thing that made this process extremely unpleasant was the attitudes of the employees we met. We were being patient and cordial, but we received a lot of attitude and dirty looks from most of the employees we met. Out of the 7 different people we dealt with only three of them were helpful. We had such a bad experience here that I think I am going to unregister for all the other gifts left on our registry. I just don't want to have to deal with the hassle again. So I spent over $80 on cosmetics today and they tried to sell me a bag for 25 cents. You can't include a little paper bag with a purchase? Plus, those bags have Macy's name on the outside which makes for good advertising. There was one clerk and two people ahead of me at the Lancome counter. When she got to me and was fetching my foundation, she let another woman interrupt our transaction--one question is okay, but she held her up with multiple queries. The sales lady should have asked her to wait. Only reason I was stupid enough to go to Macy's is I got in the habit because of their Lancome bonuses. There is a bonus coming up in a little over a week, she tells me, but did she offer me a rain check with my qualifying purchase? Nope. Forget it. It's Nordstrom for me, which is an incredibly civilized store. read more

Horrible. Just horrible. I don't know why but Macy's is ALWAYS understaffed in their Accessories Department. EVERY. SINGLE. MACY'S. It's ridiculous. I can never get anyone to help me out and I always leave frustrated. On my last visit, my mom and I came in to pick up two pairs of diamond earrings we had bought but weren't able to pick up the previous night. When we arrived, it took about 15 minutes for a sales associate to free up. Now, I'm all about the elderly working. However, this sales associate in particular was soooooooo slow. It took her about 30 minutes to get our earrings from their safe. She basically painstakingly and SLOWLY withdrew EVERY. SINGLE. PACKAGE. from the safe and had to put EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. BACK. She STILL couldn't find our earrings. She then went to their NEXT safe (even though she assured us that it wouldn't be in there). And low and behold, THEY WERE THERE! We frequently suggested to her that maybe she should check with another associate to help her but she completely ignored us. It took us over an hour to pick up our earrings on what should have been a five minute maximum visit. MAX. Horrible. read more

What is with the customer service at Women's Shoes? I was there almost an hour (it was over 50 minutes), and it's not like I was trying on the whole store. I literally needed only three pairs of shoes to try on during the entire time, but I couldn't get help if someone's life depended on it. The one gentleman was really nice, but apparently new and seemed overwhelmed. The several ladies behind the counter didn't seem to care if I was being helped or not. I guess I was just supposed to stand there and wait 20 minutes at a time while the gentleman was dealing with a couple difficult transactions at the register, just because he had helped me first. Look, I get that that's protocol, but if you're in sales in some capacity, you should really at least try to pretend that you care about professionalism and customer service. I was ready to shell out cash for some nice boots, but I will take my business elsewhere. read more

I think all Macy's suck in the bay area except for Union Square. Seriously, they don't have much selection at all. Its no use sending me all these great coupon deals and you have nothing I like or in my size. I have to go Union Square which sucks for parking but that's it.
