Sadly I had a sad experience at this shop. The sales ladies were pleasant and my fault is not with them I bought a pretty jacket from a manufacturer named Kamana. Wanted to read about the company so I went online and discovered that the retail price for my jacket was. 85.00 I purchased the identical jacket from Barcelona for 195.00! So I returned it only to discover that they charge a 20 percent restocking fee which I had not been warned about! It was in tiny print on the sales receipt. My husband and I have loved Barcelino for years but mostly shopped the SF store. We recently needed a very special shirt and tie for "Father of the Bride" for our daughter's wedding. We decided to go to the Barcelino store in Hillsdale Mall rather than all the way into the City . . . it was the best decision we could have made! Garo and Monty gave us their undivided attention and showed us selections we might have overlooked. The service at Barcelino store in SF, especially Eric, our salesman, was excellent. What Eric promised was delivered. This San Mateo store was not as good. When we requested merchandise, we had to go to SF to get it. The shirts, sweaters and t-shirts were unique and of excellent quality. The leather jackets were outstanding and one of a kind. read more

Short review: Barcelino (and Sarrtori in San Carlos) have the coolest men's clothing on the Peninsula. The best shopping experience, period. Go to Macy's next door first, then go to Barcelino, and it is night and day. I don't shop for clothes very often, but when I do, I am dismayed by the dearth of any menswear that catches my eye in the usual mall stores. Macy's, Nordie's, Bloomie's: everything is so banal, pedestrian. There are some nice ties, and an occasional basic shirt. And not cheap. The Seven jeans look and feel nice, but are they $200 more pleasant than the ones at Marshall's, et. al? I have a pair of Sevens and a pair that have a Guess label I got for $30 at Marshall's and they look and feel pretty darn similar. Thank heavens I can basically live in shorts and tees. I had bought most of my nice things at Nordie's about ten years ago; I also only dress specially for special occasions. Duh. Back then, Nordstrom carried Jahne Barnes, who is my favorite designer; alas, no more, pushed out by having to aim low even in a 'high-end' store. My 'nice stuff'' was all stolen last year and I went looking for some new things for dates and job interviews. And I am not fond of wearing ties, so if I am going to bother with buttons, I'd like to have some visual interest as a benefit. I do like Gran Sasso tees, which have subtle patterning in plain, solid-color shirts and feel really nice. Barcelino is a breath of fresh air. They have Jahne Barnes, they have Haupt, they have elegant men's clothes and accessories. I got a couple of shirts, two pairs of very trippy socks, and a beautifull ostrich belt. The manager and all of the rest of the staff are very friendly and helpful. For a little more money you can get goods that are in a different league aesthetically and of superior quality than the mall store merchandise. And if you are like me and only need a couple pairs of slacks and four or five shirts that you expect to keep a long time, it is worth a few extra bucks to get something you'll be happy with (and will last) for years. As someone who has a difficult time shopping for the menfolk in my life, Barcelino is a godsend when I'm looking for that "special something" - mostly because everything in that store is a special something. The father's day tie is no longer a depressing standby, since there are roughly eleventy zillion unique patterns and styles to chose from - from sedate to swarovski crystal-embellished (I kid you not). Shoes, sweaters, shirts, sports jackets - this place pretty much has it all. Don't have it? They'll order it. Don't have a size handy? Gift certificates ahoy! I hesitate to give Barcelino a $$$$ rating, because where brands overlap with Nordstrom, the price pretty much on par, but everything is high-end, so you aren't going to find any $20 shirts. The staff there is friendly and knowledgeable and new management has the store looking better than ever. Highly recommend! read more

I had a horrible experience at Barcelino's located at Hillsdale, San Mateo. The sales people screwed up a simple exchange. I brought back a shirt and in turn bought a beautiful leather jacket and two pairs of pants. After the sale, they notified me that there was a discrepancy in the transaction and it would be discussed when I picked up the pants (yes, they charge additional to have already expensive pants hemmed). I picked up the pants, no discrepancy was discussed and I walked away thinking I was done. I was shocked to see that Barcelino staff (without my approval or authorization) went ahead a charged my credit card. I went to the store to ask them what they were doing, this was not ethical or a good business practice. They told me that I owed the money and it was within their rights to charge me the additional fees. My credit card company and I know different!! YOU CAN'T CHARGE WITHOUT APPROVAL, GOT IT! To add insult to injury, the staff looked and called me a thief, stating that the money was owed and what was I looking for "a tie"...it was rude and uncalled for. I just got through dumping a wad at their establishment. I will not spend another penny at this store. You can find similar merchandise at other stores within the mall. Send the message, you can't conduct business like that and expect people to accept it. read more

After coming to NorCal in August for apartment hunting for a pending move from SoCal, I decided to maybe buy a shirt to wear for my wedding, which would be coming up in a few days. I stopped by Barcelino in hopes of finding something fancy to fit the occasion. I communicated to the staff that I needed a shirt for my wedding, and they helped me select a shirt. Upon trying it on, I discovered the shoulders and chest fit well, but the midsectuon area was Too baggy. They told me they could have their tailor finish alterations the next day, given that I would be flying back to LA then. The tailor came in and pinned the shirt to show me what he would do. When moving around in the pinned shirt, I felt comfortable, including when making a hugging motion. When I arrived the following day, I discovered the shirt was way too small in the armpit area. I felt the shirt may burst when making a hugging motion. When I told Garo, he said that I should wear it for my wedding and then bring it back to have it fixed. I was under the impression that the tailoring could be reversed as Monty had explained the process to consist of excess fabric being hidden to make the midsection narrower and that this fabric could later be released in case I gained weight, for example. Arriving back in LA, I felt the shirt was still too uncomfortable and did not stretch. I took it to a tailor I trust. He told me that he believed the Barcelino tailor had cut out fabric, resulting in a smaller armhole. As that fabric was now lost, nothing could be done to increase the armhole. He noted that removing excess fabric that was hidden away would affect only the midsection and do virtually nothing to allow more room in the armpit area, due to the armhole reduction. He also told me that the tailoring work had been poorly done with misaligned stitching and the use of a darker color stitch. I immediately called Barcelino to explain the situation. Aaryon told me not to worry and made a personal promise to me that I would get a full refund when I returned the shirt in September after my honeymoon and subsequent move to NorCal. He told me not to wear the shirt because I would be returning it for a refund and that they could repurpose the shirt for sale. This gave me some relief. Yet a few days later, I received two voicemails from Barcelino staff telling me to call them (this was the day before my wedding). When I did so, Monty explained that they could offer me only store credit, saying they could not resell the shirt. When I told him about Aaryon's promise of a refund to me, he said that he should not have done so because the president had not approved. Though Monty explained that this was a rush job, no one ever told me that this may cause poor work product. Had they done so, I would not have taken that risk. Further, Monty said I had walked out of the store saying I could wear the shirt. It upset me that he said this considering I had left the store after having been told by Garo that given the wedding coming in just a few days I could wear it just for that day and then get it fixed for long term wear. Given that (1) the primary purpose of the shirt was for my wedding (and this had been communicated to the staff that was helping me that day), (2) their tailor had failed to alter the shirt as represented during the pinning process (and did a poor quality job of stitching), and (3) they reneged on a promise made to me in clear terms of a refund, I am very disappointed in how Barcelino handed this situation. read more

This is my favorite place to shop when I am looking for a unique and special, gift or for myself (usually myself). My first experience was a few years ago when they carried a small collection for women. I was looking for something special, one of a kind and found a very elegant shrug to compliment my strapless dresses. I was assisted by a very knowledgeable associate named Susana. She was very sensitive and tactful regarding my budget and was able to find the perfect shrug within my budget. In addition, she shared some information about the brand and it's designers. More recently, I was looking for something for my father-in-law. I thought I would get him a nice fedora. Once again, Susana was there to assist me. Susana showed me a few different styles and selected a hat that was suitable for my father-in-law. All of this was accomplished with a little conversation and my willingness to allow this professional to do her thing. She knows her stuff! If you are looking for quality and great service, this is the place to be. One should expect to spend a nice penny and it is worth it. Susana is great and a pleasure to work with! read more

Great fashionable clothes!!! Not inexpensive, but you have not Wilkes Bashford ridiculous. They do have decent sales. Sales staff tells you everything looks great on you and always trying to sell you. Don't expect to get a real opinion on anything from them as their goal is sell you as much as they can. read more

Just purchased a beautiful suit for my husband for our son's wedding. Aaryon our salesman was great with the fitting and suggesting shoes, shirt and tie to complete the outfit. After being a customer at this establishment for over 12 years now, it sadens me to write this. But after my last few exerpiences, over the last couple of years; all I can say is this place has gone down hill faster than Whitney Houston. The window displays have always been and will always continue to be stellar. The sales staff not so much. The last few sales people to go through that place really don't understand their customer base. Repeatedly, they come off as a bit unpolished, sleazy, they don't listen to their customers and constantly try the hard sell. In the day their merchandise commanded their prices but lately have the stuff they have that are so-called fine Italian clothing are made in China, I was really pissed to learn a few weeks ago after doing a bit of research that some of their products (i.e shoes, accessories are 2 or more seasons old). As I said it saddens me to write this about a place that at one time you knew you were getting your money's worth. Don't get me wrong I have bought a few items there over the years, however these days it's clear they haven't changed with the market and the quality is well a bit 2nd-tier. The sales staff, well perhaps they'd do better at a flea market. A good example was that there was a time you could walk in the store and staff took fantastic care of you including bringing you a glass of champagne while you shopped. A few times I've been in their looking for ties and there may be one on display and when I asked to see it, neither the salesperson or manager would be willing to take it off the display unless I was willing to buy it. I can appreciate it's a differnent market. But these clowns really need to step up their game. Ah yes I almost forgot about the very stand-offish, very older lady that works there - will try and hard sell you anything but couldn't help you to save her life.
