I saw Macu Tea opening up two locations in the South Bay recently and was immediately intrigued. I happened to be in the same plaza as their San Jose location and decided to pop in and see what they offer. The interior was clean and it was fairly empty on a Friday afternoon. I like that their menu was really clear and offered quite a few options. Above the menu, they had a tv screen displaying a rotation of their 10 most popular items and their descriptions which was immensely helpful when making a decision. I ended up picking their number 1 option: The King of Mango Smoothie, which had fixed toppings and sweetness (about $9 with tax before tip). Service was quick and efficient and both of the ladies working were really friendly. Unfortunately, I just missed their grand opening BOGO deal which would've been nice to try two different items for the price of one. The King of Mango Smoothie is categorized as a drinking dessert, and they were very right. It has a thick consistency of blended icy mango, chunks of mango and grapefruit, coconut milk, and tea jelly. Pro Tip: STIR BEFORE DRINKING. If you don't, you will end up drinking each layer individually and it will taste really weird if not slightly bitter. I will say I am not a huge fan of tea jelly because it's pretty bitter and I also wish it wasn't as icy and more creamy, but when all mixed together, it worked out a lot better. It definitely stayed very thick and I had to wait about 15 minutes for it to melt a little to make it easier to drink. Overall, I had a pleasant experience at Macu Tea and would definitely go back to try some other menu items. I know they will get more and more popular in time! read more

We got the CUTEST Snoopy marshmallow with our combo order! Macu Tea is doing a promotion this month where you can buy one of their two combo drinks and you get a free Snoopy marshmallow! :) You can choose Combo A or Combo B, which both consist of a smoothie and a black tea with small variations. My friend got the Bo-Bo Strawberry Smoothie and I got the Chi-Chi Ceylon Black Tea. The cheese foam was thick, creamy, and blended very well with the Ceylon black tea. I got 50% sweetness but I still thought it was a bit on the sweeter side. My other friend got the Mango Smoothie, which she always raves about. Macu Tea always uses fresh mango in their drinks and you can be sure of it because they stack their cases of fresh mango along the wall for you to see! The inside is super neat and clean, and the servers were really friendly! I'm excited to see if they do more of these combo deals with a mystery marshmallow each month. read more

I've been to the macu in Taiwan so I was excited to see them open in the bay. I ordered a golden leaf milk tea and my friend got an orange mango chi chi for her sister. The music is too loud here or the workers need to use a mic because the order pick up was a disaster. You can't hear what number she's calling out and she's just frantically yelling in the corner. I went up to the counter 3x thinking she called my number but was another order. Finally got my order and was shocked at how white my milk tea was. Golden leaf is a type of oolong tea and all oolong teas I've gotten have been more brown and this looked like jasmine milk tea which is weird. I got my drink at 50% and this drink was so so so sweet. It tastes like 150% and the sugar lingers on your tongue after each sip. You can taste the tea flavor which is good but the sweetness overpowers the tea flavor. The milk tea was $6+ with tax without any toppings. Toppings are also 0.75-1.25 which is annoying. They have QQ jelly but it isn't like the usual QQ noodles(like at tp tea). It basically tastes like crystal boba(agar) in a noodle form. read more

The store is super nice and clean! Plenty of chairs and tables. I came here around 6pm on a Saturday and there was no line! Although I know the parking in this plaza tends to be busier during the lunch rush. Staff were friendly and worked very quick to get out my drink. Seems like a new boba place recently opened up(opened in July)! They were offering samples of their oolong milk tea (regular sweetness) which was really good as is, something I would try next time! There were plenty of tables, great for chatting or working. It was very clean inside, a lot of white lighting and it felt quite spacious inside. There was only one cashier in the back of the store and one restroom. What I ordered! Wintermelon with Fresh milk + boba 8/10 This was creamy and satisfied my cravings for something cold after dinner. I did want to get this drink with grass jelly but they were out at the time. Instead i opted to try their boba which I would say is your standard boba that you can get at most boba places now. (Chewy, no hard center), nothing special about the boba here. Great indoor seating and great spot to hangout with friends! I like that they are open till 10pm so when the late night cravings hit, you have a reliable spot close by. I have been twice now with my brother & friend. Day seems to be relatively chill with 1 or 2 people. However, late night around 9pm it was pretty busy with people coming in & out as groups. I love this franchise. Either I've just been lucky or they're actually consistent, because my usual drink is always amazing. For it being a smoothie, the employees are surprisingly quick. Every Macu location I've been to has the same great vibe. My family's go-to is the King of Mango Smoothie, and it never disappoints. I've also tried the Chocolate Tiramisu, and that one is best when it's slightly melted. Trust me, mix in the cream topping well, be a little patient, and let the chocolate work its magic. I can't vouch for their other drinks, but my motto is why fix something that isn't broken. My usual is so good that I'll literally go out of my way for it whenever I'm craving that mango kick. read more

I've heard of Macu Tea back where I live in the 626/SGV (LA County). But I decided to try the location here in SJ since I was in the area and I really wanted something fresh fruit tasting. I went with the king of mango drink which tasted like a mango pomelo sago with some jelly. Overall it was yummy and a good level of sweetness. I would have preferred something less heavy in terms of milkiness but nevertheless it satisfied my boba cravings. I would try more drinks if I saw a location that was convenient to get to. read more

There are alot of boba spots open in this plaza (its in the same plaza as happy lemon, hue) but this spot is now my favorite! I love the golden leaf milk tea w/ pearls. This drink reminds me of light oolong tea and was super refreshing. Their pearls are really good as well, super soft/chewy. Lucky for me, Macu Tea finally opened this last weekend! I was overjoyed to learn that Macu Tea was coming to San Jose. Stepping into the new boba shop, the area is clean and there was lots of seating for customers waiting for drinks or to just hang out. The colors are modern with the white walls, fixtures, and seats. As you walk in, there are cases of fruit along the walls and front counter. To order, you approach the front counter cashier. The cashier was knowledgeable on promotions and the differences between each drink. I would've liked bigger menus around closer to the counter so that I could have a better idea of what I wanted to order before I got to the cashier. After ordering, your number is printed on a receipt. Even though it was their grand opening weekend, we only waited 15-20 min! What a feat. Although the order line is kind of slow, the drinks came out surprisingly fast. They can be picked up around the other side of the counter. During their grand opening week, they also provided these single drink holders. So cute! So far, I have tried: Chi-Chi Mango, King of Mango, Golden Leaf Tea with Chi-Chi, and the QQ Passion Fruit Tea. I think my favorite, by far, is the Chi-Chi Mango. "Chi-Chi" is the cheese foam on a drink! The Golden Leaf tea with Chi-Chi (promotion) was good, but it didn't satisfy a craving. There was a strong tea flavor and the cream was a nice compliment to make the drink creamy. The QQ Passion Fruit Tea (promotion) also confused me. I wasn't expecting so many toppings (2-3 kinds, I think) and it felt more like a snack than a drink. It overall was too sweet for me at 100% sweetness since the jelly toppings were not well-balanced with the already sweet fruitness of teh drink. I would suggest no lychee jelly. The King of Mango is a good drink, but is also very dense. There's so much to mix in order to get the full flavors. It is a little tough for the coconut taste to come through, but it is good! I'm not sure if I would get it again, just not for me. The Chi-Chi Mango is definitely my favorite! I love the complementary cheese foam to the soft-blended mango drink. It adds a creaminess to deepen the flavor of the sweet, fruit mango blend. I would definitely get it again -- every time if I could. Overall, I don't mind the ordering line since the drinks come out quickly! I would say they are most popular for fruit drinks, especially mango. Hate to be that person but I think this is one of the worst milk tea shops in San Jose (if not the Bay Area). I saw that this is a franchise from Taiwan so it was quite disappointing. I ordered a Ceylon Black Milk Tea at 50% sweet and it was DISGUSTINGLY sweet. My boyfriend could see the visible disappointment on my face. Yes, maybe I should've complained about my drink to the cashier but I didn't want to be a Karen. :/ I really don't know what happened- the first time we came here, it was pretty good. Here's what we tried: King of Mango smoothie ($8.20 w/ tax): This was apparently their most popular drink, so I was expecting a lot. The large-sized smoothie came with an array of toppings, including green tea jelly, mango chunks, coconut milk, and grapefruit. It was pretty refreshing, I love that with every sip, I get something a little different. The coconut milk definitely added a lot of flavor and creaminess to the drink. It is a relatively expensive drink so I don't think it wowed me enough. QQ Passion Fruit drink (FREE): Opting for a 30% sweetness level, we found this passion fruit drink to be just right! I especially like the topping it came with, it doesn't quite taste like boba but like a more firm & yet bouncy boba's cousin. However, it's worth noting that the drink had a significant amount of pulp, which might not appeal to those who aren't fond of orange pulp. read more

We came on their grand opening B1G1. You choose of one of three drinks and they give you the pre-selected drink of the day. I think they focus more on fruity drinks and basic milk teas. So you won't find things like taro here. King of Mango Smoothie comes as is, it wasn't terrible, but wasn't great either. The free drink they gave us was QQ Passion Fruit. The mango itself is delicious but I thought the grapefruit was a bit too overwhelming with its bitterness. The pulp is strong as well. I didn't taste any of the coconut either. I wasn't disappointed but I wouldn't get this drink again. I should've gotten the plain mango smoothie so that I could taste the purity of the mango. The employee named Tuyen was extremely rude -- she was openly cursing in Vietnamese while helping me, messed up my drink completely, and when I pointed it out, she refused to fix it or give me a refund. As crazy the mix of tastes sounds, it made a memorable drink that left me wanting to come back. The store is very spacious, but has a chill ambience. Came here after Hue and this place is a yes from me! I stopped by here with a few friends and we all just got the mango drinks from this place. It's a small store but I do love that it just primarily focuses on mango drinks as their star. Of course they have other things too. I got the King of Mango Smoothie and I can say it was refreshing and it had that strong mango flavor. It comes with green tea jelly, grapefruit pulp, and coconut milk. The overall mango in this tasted pretty fresh and ripe and it had a good amount of toppings added inside as well. Make sure you mix everything up all together so you're not just gulping just one part of the drink! Overall, a great dessert spot with real delicious fruit flavors blended inside. I really liked the layout! I like a simple minimalistic look. I like the pictures of some of their drinks on the wall that describes what's in it. It was interesting and informative! I had the cashier recommend me the Orange & Mango LiLi Tea. I got it regular sweetness and regular ice level. They informed me that they don't use fruit syrups and use the natural sweetness of the fruit which is very good to hear for those that don't like flavored syrup! The chunks of mango were mainly the soft mango which I really like because it's sweeter than hard mango. Although I liked the sweetness of the mango, I could barely taste the other ingredients in the drink. I felt like it was mainly a mango drink. It lacked in the tea flavor as well as the orange. I feel like maybe if they added more tea and maybe some orange slices then I would've given the drink a better rating, but this is where I currently stand. The service was pretty good! The cashier was very informative and very helpful when deciding on what to get! They were going as fast as they could when making and sending out the drinks, so I'm not really complaining on the wait time. I overheard the cashier saying to a customer that they're closed and it was 9PM. I think they should update their hours because on Yelp it said they closed at 10PM. I also got two other drinks. I got the Matcha tiramisu and the winter melon lemonade one for my sisters. They said they enjoyed it. Service was fast. I came on a Saturday night at 8pm and there were barely anyone there. No crowds but customers come one after the other. I'm fine with that as long as I don't waste time waiting. Both were really good - thick and creamy. I like the toppings. Service was good and wait time is reasonable. The taste has been consistent for the last 3-4 times I have been here. The mango was refreshing. You just gotta make sure to mix the coconut at the bottom with the mango on top.
