We love going to Mackay hardware for all of our hardware, maintenance and rental needs. We rent tents, chairs, tables and power tools from them whether we are building a deck, fertilizing our lawn or buying new tools. No show for 2 days in a row for aerator rental. No calls to inform me. Just didn't show up. Never again!

I needed to rent a pipe threader. The guy at the counter said they had one available, but he suggested I go elsewhere because all the dies were dull. What kind of management allows such poor quality in their rental tools that their counter staff tells customers not to rent from them? I ended up going to Taylor Rental in Chelmsford and was completely satisfied. read more

This was always an outstanding local hardware store, but under the new management they seem to have forgotten about Customer Service. I was directed to them by Husqvarna for a warranty issue on my lawnmower and they immediately accused me of buying my lawnmower elsewhere and coming to them with the warranty issue-even though I was directed to them by Husqavana Customer Service. They said it would take "hours and hours of their time requesting a new bag and that they had made no money on me" I spoke with a rude technician and also spoke with the new owner who just didn't seem to know what to do. I left very disappointed and called Husqavana Customer Service and filed a complaint about them and they are sending me a new bag for my lawnmower as a courtesy, not sure what the big deal was here but they just lost a 30+ year customer. read more

The product selection at the store is good, all the standard items, hardware, etc. The rental part is a bonus. The main thing I love about the store is the men who work there are very knowledgeable and clearly have real life experience, so their advice is very well informed. This is hard to come by these days. Even the youngins who work there are fairly wise and helpful. I always go in there looking for something obscure, or even with just an idea of what I want to accomplish, and they are always willing to entertain my ideas and help me figure out how to do what I'm trying to do. read more

The store is fine, but I am absolutely floored by how rude and indignant the owner is. We made a non-storm related purchase Friday, 6 days after the big October snowstorm. When we got it home, we realized that we didn't need the over $50 item. So the very next day, we went into MacKay's to return it, but the owner stated that he would not take any returns on storm-related items. When I explained that it wasn't storm related, he became quite rude and a bit abusive, saying, and I quote, "There were 20 people who wanted that during the storm, and you bought it, so they couldn't. You got that for you, and now I'm in it for me. I had to tell 20 people they couldn't have one, I was here to serve the community, and now I'm in it for me. No one else is looking out for me, so I need to. I can't believe you'd even ask." When I asked him to calm down, and explained that it was in perfect resaleable condition, he got even more aggressive and kept reiterating, "I can't believe you'd even ask... No. I'm in it for me now." So, Mr. MacKay, I will never ever shop in your store again (have spent thousands there over the years), and I encourage all of your customer base to travel 2.2 miles down the road into Chelmsford and visit Aubuchon Hardware on Summer Street, where they actually appreciate their customers. Or anywhere else. Because as far as I'm concerned after your rude and abusive (and selfish!) tantrum, I hope you end up all alone in your store, with no customers or employees to bother you, and then you can be all alone and "in it for me" all you want. read more

I wanted to rent a rug shampooer. All of the other stores use the rug doctor, $25 for 24 hours, MacKay has some brand I've never heard of, you can't even find it on the net, it's probably a bissell that they bought. Their price is $34 for only 8 hours, I asked if i could pick it up the night before to have help bringing it upstairs, they said they would have to charge me for 2 days. that would be $68 vs everyone else for $25. Other than this rental issue, they are helpful and have many hardware items. read more

I have lived in Westford for over 10 years. MacKays is an institution there. It took me by great surprise that when I went to return an electric stapler my husband had purchased 2 days earlier (the safety was jammed), that I was greeted with hostility and contempt. One man accused my husband of smashing the stapler with a hammer. What? Eventually the refund was granted but as I was leaving, the same man asked where the box was. The stapler did not come in a box. It came in a plastic blister pack that clearly we did not save after opening. Who does? He looked at me, huffed and walked away disgusted.The whole situation was embarrassing, and unnecessarily demeaning. Like I spend my days trying to "trick" a small business out of money. We will not return but instead frequent the Ace Hardware on Groton Rd. A bit more of a drive but they are always pleasant and helpful. read more

So convenient to have them down the street! I always find them to be helpful right when you walk in the door. They help you find what you need, and are able to answer any questions quickly and well. A lot of times I find better stuff there than at Lowes or Home Depot, and it's great to have a local store for stuff you need NOW that you didn't realize you'd need when you started the project. You can "rent" for free the color sample book of Benjamin Moore colors. My only complaint is their hours. They are hardly ever open when I need them to be (like Sunday.) It's slightly more expensive than the big stores, but sometimes it's worth paying more for the convenience of shopping locally. read more

I saw all of the reviews here but decided to go in myself to rent a lawn mower and some other yard equipment. I was pleasantly greeted at the door by a couple of older gentlemen, one of whom helped me for over half hour explaining what tools I'd need and how to use them to get my yard in shape for the Spring. They helped me load it into my truck and made sure all was in working order before leaving the store. I returned the items 2 days later and did see the owner, who smiled and thanked me for my business. Prices aren't much more than the competition and their equipment is newer and works great. I've rented other stuff elsewhere only to have it break down in the middle of my job - NOT FUN. For the service and equipment/selection they have there, I'll certainly be back. Thank you read more

I have lived in Westford for 10 years, and I am happy to support local business. That being said, I will drive 20 minutes out of my way to avoid this store. I rented a machine, and although there were half a dozen people "working" at the time, I was not helped. I didn't say anything about my 25 minute wait, but when it was finally my turn to get loaded up, the employee made a comment under his breathe to me. Then he continued to complain about how I was in a rush (which I was only because I was renting their machine by the hour), and then continued to gripe even as I left the store. When I came back, he called me a jerk! I asked to speak with the owner, and he said that since I was in a rush, I essentially deserved a comment like that. The store is aging, the employees are cranky old men, and their prices are ridilculous. Even with gas close to $3 per gallon, I still think its cheaper to drive to Home Depot or O'Connors Hardware than pay their inflated prices. The sad part is I live right around the corner from them, and I will never set foot in that shady store again. Trust me - go somewhere else. read more
